The Lyric Hybrid is the first hybrid mattress from American furniture and homeware company Burrow, building on their flagship all-foam Lyric Mattress. Both the Lyric and Lyric Hybrid share the same comfort and transitional layers, but they have significant differences in other aspects of their constructions, as well as their price-points. This makes each mattress a good fit for different types of sleepers.

We’ll take a closer look at the Lyric Hybrid’s performance across important categories like pressure relief and temperature neutrality, as well as how it suits sleepers with different body types and preferred sleep positions. Read on to learn whether the Lyric Hybrid is the best mattress for you.

Side Sleepers

The Lyric Hybrid’s firm feel and responsive comfort layer make it most appropriate for side sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds, although it may also appeal to those who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds.

The best mattresses for side sleepers have adequate pressure relief to avoid tightness or soreness at points that push into the mattress, such as at the shoulders and hips. When sleepers weighing above 130 pounds lie on the Lyric Hybrid, the foam comfort layers and pocketed steel coils compress enough to provide cushioning around these pressure points. The bed’s firmness also offers enough support to encourage neutral spine alignment.

Side sleepers weighing under 130 pounds don’t compress the mattress as much, which leads to a firmer feel that provides significantly less pressure relief. These sleepers would do better with a mattress that has a softer feel or a firm mattress with more contouring pressure relief.

Back Sleepers

Of all body types, back sleepers are likely to appreciate the Lyric Hybrid’s balance between support and pressure relief. This is particularly true for back sleepers who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds.

For a bed to offer back sleepers the most comfortable sleep, it must be supportive and adequately firm while still providing enough pressure relief to prevent tension through the shoulders and hips. Back sleepers weighing between 130 and 230 pounds are likely to feel cradled by the Lyric Hybrid without experiencing too much sinkage.

Some sleepers under 130 pounds may find the Lyric Hybrid slightly too firm, and some above 230 pounds may find it not firm enough. Overall, however, the Lyric Hybrid will likely appeal to most back sleepers.

Stomach Sleepers

The Lyric Hybrid is best suited to stomach sleepers over 130 pounds, but those below that range may still find it comfortable and supportive. The best mattresses for heavy sleepers tend to be on the firm side.

Sleeping on your stomach can place pressure on the spine and hips, so people who prefer this position need a bed that cushions their joints while still preventing their midsection from sinking too deeply into the mattress. The Lyric Hybrid achieves this balance for people weighing between 130 and 230 pounds, though an appropriate pillow is still necessary to avoid neck or upper back pain.

Stomach sleepers who weigh below or above this range may still sleep well on the Lyric Hybrid but should keep a few additional things in mind. People who weigh less than 130 pounds may experience tension or pain in their joints due to the firmness level of this mattress, particularly if they sleep with their torso or hips twisted. Those weighing above 230 pounds should make sure the Lyric Hybrid is supportive enough through the midsection and hips.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

6.5 / 10

The Lyric Hybrid has similar motion isolation to many other hybrid mattresses. Light sleepers may notice when their partner changes positions. However, our testers found that the combination of polyfoam comfort and support layers generally provided enough motion isolation.

Motion isolation tends to be most important for couples, as it rates how well a mattress prevents movement from causing disturbances. Very light sleepers searching for excellent motion isolation may prefer an all-foam mattress or a hybrid mattress with thicker polyfoam or memory foam comfort layers.

Pressure Relief

6.5 / 10

The Lyric Hybrid has a 1.5-inch transitional memory foam layer that provides good pressure relief. While memory foam can sometimes allow too much sink, our testers found that the Lyric Hybrid’s comfort layer provides a balanced, buoyant feel without the characteristic sink of memory foam.

Side sleepers who weigh over 130 pounds are likely to find that the Lyric Hybrid conforms to their body and prevents pressure points and stiffness. Back and stomach sleepers are also likely to enjoy good pressure relief. However, side sleepers under 130 pounds may find the bed too firm.

Temperature Control

6.5 / 10

Hybrid mattresses usually sleep cooler than all-foam beds due to airflow through the coils, and the Lyric Hybrid is no exception. The bed has several temperature regulation features, including a perforated cover to improve breathability. The comfort layer is also gel-infused, a process designed to prevent heat from accumulating.

However, those who sleep very hot may find that the Lyric Hybrid doesn’t sleep cool enough for comfort. Polyfoam and memory foam restrict airflow, particularly if a sleeper sinks in deeply enough to block airflow around their body. Sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds may feel warmer on this mattress due to increased contouring around their body.

Edge Support

7 / 10

The Lyric Hybrid has above-average edge support, meaning that most people can sleep close to the bed’s perimeter without a loss in support or the feeling that they might roll off the side. Good edge support also makes it easier to sit on the side of the bed without the mattress sagging excessively.

While it doesn’t have perimeter reinforcement, the Lyric Hybrid still performs well in this category, thanks to its pocketed coil support core and polyfoam base. However, people who weigh over 230 pounds may notice less support at the edges due to compression in the comfort layers.

Ease of Movement

6 / 10

Our testers found that the Lyric Hybrid’s design makes it easy to move around without experiencing the restrictive sinking sensation that sometimes comes with a memory foam mattress.

However, body type can affect ease of movement. For example, people who weigh more tend to sink further into their mattress. The Lyric Hybrid should still perform very well for most people above 230 pounds, but those with mobility concerns or who dislike feeling cradled by their mattress may prefer a firmer comfort system.

Off-Gassing

6.5 / 10

The Lyric Hybrid has a mild odor when it is first unpacked, but the smell should dissipate completely within 12 to 48 hours. People who are very sensitive to odors might be able to shorten this process by using fans or open windows to create more airflow through the bedroom.

This kind of smell occurs because of off-gassing, part of the manufacturing process in which volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, break down. While the smell can be off-putting, VOCs are generally considered harmless. Mattresses that use more foam are likely to produce more off-gassing.

Lyric Hybrid Mattress Review Breakdown

The Lyric Hybrid is wrapped in a non-removable polyester, rayon, and nylon cover with perforations designed to improve airflow. Built-in handles are tucked into the cover on each side, making the mattress easier to move without causing visible bumps beneath a fitted sheet.

The Lyric Hybrid’s comfort layer is made from 2.5 inches of gel-infused polyfoam designed to provide a buoyant feel with limited contouring. While not as pressure-relieving as a memory foam comfort system, this construction keeps sleepers from sinking too deeply into the mattress.

The 1.5-inch transitional layer is made of memory foam, but its position beneath the comfort layer allows it to provide pressure relief while still holding sleepers above the support core.

A 6-inch support core made from pocketed steel coils provides the Lyric Hybrid with balanced support. Since pocketed coils can compress individually, the support core also increases the mattress’ pressure relief.

Finally, a 1-inch layer of polyfoam beneath the support core adds to the bed’s stability.

Trial, Warranty, and Shipping Policies

Availability

Burrow’s products, including the Lyric Hybrid Mattresses, are only available to shoppers in the contiguous U.S. The company sells through its official website and has a brick-and-mortar showroom in New York City. They do not operate in other physical locations or sell through third-party sites like Amazon.

Shipping

All Burrow orders qualify for free shipping. The Lyric Hybrid usually ships within 5 to 10 business days, though the length of time before it is delivered depends on its final destination.

The Lyric Hybrid is vacuum-sealed in plastic and placed in a box for delivery, which is done through UPS ground shipping. It will take 3 hours for the bed to expand after unwrapping, though it can take up to 36 hours before it reaches its final firmness level.

Additional Services

Burrow does not offer White Glove delivery. Old mattress pickup is only available in California.

Sleep Trial

Lyric Hybrid customers qualify for a 100-night sleep trial. While Burrow suggests that shoppers wait 30 days before making a decision, returns are available from the moment the mattress arrives.

The process to return a mattress begins with reaching out to an agent through email. Returns are free unless the mattress is in poor condition, in which case the owner will be charged a $100 fee for pickup.

Warranty

Burrow’s mattresses are covered by a limited, non-transferable, 3-year warranty that covers all defects and damage not caused by the owner. Taking advantage of the warranty requires the initial order confirmation email and the law tag on the mattress, which is located at the top of the bed near the zipper.

Customers can also choose to purchase a 3- or 5-year extended warranty for the mattress. The extended warranty covers most stains, rips, broken components, minor burns, and product defects after the initial warranty expires. Warranty claims must be filed within 30 days of the problem.
