Founded by a fourth-generation mattress maker, Spindle launched in 2013. This direct-to-consumer consumer company focuses on one main item: the Spindle Mattress. It also produces foundations and additional 3-inch layers of latex to use with the mattress.
The Spindle Mattress has three layers of natural Dunlop latex, a layer of wool batting, and an organic cotton cover. The layers of the mattress can be repositioned to adjust between medium and firm feels.
Our Spindle Mattress review covers its construction, performance, pricing, customer reviews, and company policies. We’ll also highlight performance differences between the two potential firmness levels to help you decide which option may be best for your sleep style.

1Testing Team Takeaways
To test the Spindle Mattress, we had three people on our testing team take the bed home with them and test it for one week. Here are their initial observations.

Mary Fenton
Head of Product Content
Combination
150 pounds
Sleeps with a noise machine
“I think the Spindle has a really cool ethos and design. It took me some time to figure out which layer arrangement I liked best, but once I got it dialed in, I was very happy with the support level.”

Logan Foley
Editorial Director
Side
140 pounds
Has too many dogs in the bed
“I felt comfy and supported on the Spindle, but it was just too bouncy for my taste. Three layers of latex is really responsive, which is a great feature for some, but not ideal for me.”

Brad Nehring
Senior Product Analyst
Side
215 pounds
Sleeps with a weighted blanket
“The Spindle feels just as buoyant and resilient as I’d expect from a bed this latex-heavy. That said, I think I’m right on the edge of its ideal weight range. I sank into the layers a bit, even on the firm option.”
Sleeping Style and Body Weight
Side Sleepers
The Spindle’s quilted cover cushions the surface of the bed, and its latex layers cradle the sleeper’s body, redistributing body weight to take pressure off of a side sleeper’s hips and shoulders.
Our testers report that side sleepers under 230 pounds should get an exceptional blend of pressure-relieving contouring and spinal support from the Medium option. Testers above 230 pounds had a harder time getting a supportive surface on either the Firm or Medium configurations, saying their hips compressed the latex layers too deeply to keep their spines from curving.
Back Sleepers
Back sleeping usually keeps the spine relatively well aligned, so most back sleepers need a mattress that will support their natural alignment. Sagging near the hips is one of the most common problems for back sleepers, usually a result of sleeping on a mattress that’s too soft.
During our testing, the Firm option proved to be a better fit than the Medium for our back sleeping team members. While testing the Firm configuration, we found distinct performance differences between our body weight groups. Our testers between 130 and 230 pounds reported its blend of contouring and resilience ideal, while those above and below this weight range didn’t get the support levels they needed.
The Medium feel was too soft to prevent back sleepers from sinking into the mattress’ layers, regardless of their body weight.
Stomach Sleepers
Stomach sleepers’ midsections and hips often pull their bodies too deeply into a bed if the mattress is too soft. The stomach sleepers on our team reported that the Medium mattress allowed them to sink and they didn’t feel enough back support.
The Firm version’s added structure created a more even sleep surface that was particularly comfortable for stomach sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds. Testers under 130 pounds found the Firm too hard to be comfortable long-term, and those above 230 pounds noted the opposite problem, saying the bed was too soft.
Performance Ratings
In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.
Spindle Mattress Review Breakdown
The Spindle Mattress comes in one construction that lets you adjust between medium and firm feels. The Medium option is a true medium, rating at a 5 on the 10-point firmness scale, while the Firm option is a 7 out of 10.
The mattress has a breathable knit cover made of organic cotton. This cover has enough stretch to move with the latex layers. A 1-inch layer of wool is quilted into the cover to help regulate body temperature while cushioning the sleep surface.
The body of the mattress uses three 3-inch layers of Dunlop latex with different firmness and density ratings. To adjust your bed’s firmness level, you can arrange the three latex layers according to Spindle’s guidelines or find the combination that works best for you. The company also gives you the option to buy additional latex layers so you can further fine-tune your bed’s feel.
Dunlop latex is popular for its durability, bounce, and breathability. It doesn’t compress directly under weight like standard memory foam or polyfoam. Instead, it distributes weight over more of the mattress. Sleepers often liken the feel to sleeping “on” rather than “in” the mattress.

Sleep Trial
When purchased directly through Spindle, the mattress has a 365-night sleep trial. Spindle asks that customers try the mattress for 30 to 60 days. If they don’t adjust to their new mattress, Spindle will work with the customer to find ways to make it more comfortable.
Customers who still aren’t satisfied can return the mattress for a full refund. This gives customers the option of refurbishing or adjusting the firmness of their mattress without replacing it.
This does not apply to purchases through third-party websites, including Amazon.
