The Zenhaven is a 10-inch, flippable mattress featuring a different firmness level on each side. It is built with eco-friendly, certified organic materials including latex, cotton, and wool. Saatva, a well-known American mattress company, manufactures the Zenhaven. Saatva stands out by offering valuable perks like a 365-night sleep trial, a limited lifetime warranty, and free White Glove delivery and setup.

In our Test Lab, we analyzed all aspects of the Zenhaven, including its design and materials. We also assessed its performance for sleepers who have different body weights, sleeping positions, and firmness preferences.

We’ll review the findings from our testing team and cover the essential details about the Zenhaven that can help you make a decision about whether it’s well-suited to your needs.

Testing Team Takeaways

To test the Zenhaven Mattress, we had three people on our testing team each take the bed home with them for one week. Here are their initial observations.

Back sleeper

165 pounds

Dunks head in ice water to wake up

The firmness difference between the two sides is significant, and I only liked the Gentle Firm side. It kept my lower back supported when sleeping on my back, and I also liked the latex’s balance of cushioning and bounce.

Side sleeper

215 pounds

Sleeps with a weighted blanket

For my sleep needs, I found each side of the Zenhaven to be good enough but not great. The Luxury Plush side caused my hips and shoulders to sink in a bit more than I’d like, but the Gentle Firm side wasn’t quite gentle enough to be ideal for me. That said, I loved that the mattress stayed cool throughout the night.

Side sleeper

140 pounds

Has too many dogs in the bed

I found the Luxury Plush side to be a better fit when lying on my side. For me, the Gentle Firm side felt a bit harsh around my shoulders. Like Brad, I appreciated that the mattress stayed cool, but I was a bit bothered by motion transfer from the bouncy materials.

Side Sleepers

The Zenhaven provides solid support when lying on your side, enabling the mattress to promote spinal alignment. That said, each side of the mattress appeals to different side sleepers based on their body weight.

The medium soft (4) Luxury Plush side is best for side sleepers who weigh under 130 pounds. Its softer surface can better accommodate the hips and shoulders of people with a lighter body weight. On the other end of the spectrum, the firm (7) Gentle Firm side is far better for side sleepers over 230 pounds because of its ability to resist excess sink.

For those between 130 and 230 pounds, both sides provided roughly average support. Among these sleepers, a more mid-range firmness would offer better comfort and cushioning.

Back Sleepers

The firm (7) side of the Zenhaven is a good match for back sleepers and provides particularly strong results for those over 130 pounds.

The responsive latex keeps back sleepers supported, and the lumbar quilting adds a touch of cushioning for the lower back. Some back sleepers under 130 pounds find the firm (7) side to be a bit harder than they would prefer, but it still contributes to their spinal alignment.

In contrast, the medium soft (4) side of this mattress lacks firmness for the vast majority of back sleepers.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers require a firmer surface to keep their midsection from sinking out of line with the rest of their body. In our testing, the Zenhaven’s firm (7) side was up to the task, providing a flat base of support to stomach sleepers regardless of body weight.

However, the medium soft (4) side was not well received by the stomach sleepers during our tests. They found it to be too soft to be able to keep their body properly aligned.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

6 / 10

Zenhaven – Luxury Plush side: / 5

Zenhaven – Gentle Firm side: / 5

“You’ll definitely notice when there’s movement on another part of the Zenhaven. Whether it’s a partner rolling over or a dog jumping into bed, there’s a ripple effect that comes from the springiness of the latex.” – Logan

Motion isolation is one of the weakest elements of the Zenhaven Mattress.

Latex is a naturally bouncy material, which means that vibrations travel across the mattress surface when there’s movement on the other side of the bed. Of the two sides of the Zenhaven, there’s a bit less motion transfer on the Luxury Plush side.

Light vibrations shouldn’t be a major problem for most couples and bed partners. But very sensitive sleepers who share a mattress and are easily awoken may not be the best match for the Zenhaven.

Pressure Relief

7.5 / 10

Zenhaven – Luxury Plush side: / 5

Zenhaven – Gentle Firm side: / 5

“Latex doesn’t have the best reputation for pressure relief, but the Zenhaven did a surprisingly good job of helping me sleep with a neutral spine. The materials are high-quality, creating a dependable combo of cushioning and support.” – Danny

In our testing, the combination of latex, wool, and cotton effectively relieved pressure for most sleepers. Some people felt that the mattress was either a little too hard or too soft depending on which side was being used, but the zoned materials helped reduce impact around major pressure points.

Most sleepers found that the softer side, which has more give, was better for pressure relief. However, stomach and back sleepers gave higher marks to the firmer side.

Temperature Control

8 / 10

Zenhaven – Luxury Plush side: / 5

Zenhaven – Gentle Firm side: / 5

“This is a top-tier pick for hot sleepers. I didn’t feel any heat buildup, and the Gentle Firm side was impressively cool to the touch.” – Brad

Hot sleepers should have no problem sleeping on either side of the Zenhaven.

Dunlop latex is naturally resistant to heat retention, and the holes added to increase airflow make it easier for heat to escape. The breathable cotton cover and moisture-wicking wool layer also help draw heat away from the body.

Edge Support

7 / 10

Zenhaven – Luxury Plush side: / 5

Zenhaven – Gentle Firm side: / 5

“The pushback from the latex really contributes to a sense of stability around the edge of the Zenhaven, especially on the Gentle Firm side. Even when you feel the latex compress on the Luxury Plush side, the edge still feels stable.” – Brad

The Zenhaven doesn’t have reinforced edges, but the latex holds up well when pressure is applied to the perimeter. This is especially true of the firm side, which only allows minimal compression.

You can detect more sinkage when sitting on the outside of the medium soft (4) side. However, most people shouldn’t have any trouble sleeping near the edge of the bed.

Ease of Movement

7.5 / 10

Zenhaven – Luxury Plush side: / 5

Zenhaven – Gentle Firm side: / 5

“The responsive latex makes it a breeze to move around on the Zenhaven, especially on the Gentle Firm side.” – Danny

Natural latex is extremely responsive, which gives it considerable bounce. This almost makes it feel like the mattress is helping you move when you want to adjust your sleeping position.

With less sink, the Gentle Firm side of the Zenhanen is particularly well-suited to movement. But either side is great for anyone who wants to be able to easily adjust their body’s position on the mattress.

Off-Gassing

7.5 / 10

Zenhaven – Luxury Plush side: / 5

Zenhaven – Gentle Firm side: / 5

“There was definitely a latexy smell in the bedroom for a day, but it was far from overpowering. Personally, I found it to be less bothersome than the chemical smell that comes from many foam mattresses.” – Logan

With its natural materials, the Zenhaven doesn’t have the off-gassing issues that affect mattresses with foam and other synthetic materials.

Nevertheless, you may notice a faint rubbery smell when the mattress arrives. That odor should disappear within two days and may dissipate even more quickly if your bedroom has good ventilation.

Zenhaven Mattress Review Breakdown

An organic cotton cover provides a soft and breathable surface for the Zenhaven mattress. The cover has extra quilting that is strategically placed to cushion the lumbar spine. Within the cover, the mattress has five layers, all of which are made with natural materials.

Each side of the mattress contains comfort layers made with organic New Zealand wool and organic latex. Together, these layers gently cushion the body while retaining pushback to keep you from sinking too far into the mattress.

Zoned latex in the comfort sections is designed to give added support to key parts of the body, such as the midsection and shoulders. Small holes in the latex enhance airflow and temperature regulation.

In the center of the mattress, the support core is a layer of natural latex that has met the standards of the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS). This Dunlop latex is heavy and dense, and it gives the mattress significant stability and bounce.

On one side, the firmness level is medium soft (4), which the company calls Luxury Plush. The other side, labeled as Gentle Firm, rates as firm (7). You can flip the mattress over to switch between these two firmness options.

Mattress Prices and Sizing

The Zenhaven is competitively priced for an all-latex mattress made with organic materials

While latex mattresses may not fit in everyone’s budget, they can be a worthwhile investment. Natural latex is expensive to produce, but it usually outlasts other mattress types. The Zenhaven also has extra features like organic cotton and wool, a flippable design, and free White Glove delivery.

The mattress is available in all of the standard mattress sizes as well as in split king and upper-flex king options. The upper-flex model is separated only at the head of the bed and is designed to be used with an adjustable bed frame.

Availability

The Zenhaven only ships to addresses in the contiguous 48 U.S. states.

The mattress can be purchased from the Zenhaven website. It is also on display and available for purchase in Saatva Viewing Rooms in more than a dozen U.S. cities.

Shipping

The Zenhaven mattress is shipped with free White Glove delivery. In most cases, you’ll receive the mattress within three weeks after placing an order.

After the mattress is manufactured, a local service provider will contact you to schedule the White Glove service. The Zenhaven is never compressed to fit inside a box. On the scheduled day, the delivery team will set up the mattress inside your home, which is a major benefit because of the weight of the mattress.

Saatva does not currently ship mattresses directly to Hawaii, Alaska, Canada, or other countries. That being said, they may be able to help you coordinate delivery to those locations through a third-party freight forwarding company that would charge a fee.

Additional Services

White Glove delivery service is included with all Zenhaven mattress orders. Old mattress removal is available at no extra charge if you select this option at checkout.

Sleep Trial

The Zenhaven mattress comes with a 365-night sleep trial. Should you decide to return the mattress during this time, you will receive a full refund minus a $99 processing fee, plus tax.

Warranty

The Zenhaven Mattress has a lifetime warranty. During the first two years that you own the mattress, your mattress will be replaced with a new one for free if there is a defect. In the subsequent years, there will be a $149 processing fee for warranty service, and the warranty will cover repair and re-covering.

The warranty covers uncommon problems with the materials, but it does not cover normal wear and tear or accidental damage.

In addition to the warranty, Saatva offers a Fairness Replacement Program. After the first two years, you can keep your existing Zenhaven Mattress and purchase a new one at a discount that ranges from 20% to 50% of your original purchase price.
