Our team at Sleep Foundation conducts extensive hands-on tests for each mattress to provide you with the most reliable, data-driven recommendations and reviews. Below are key guidelines that inform our testing methodology:
Our testers lie on the surface of each mattress to evaluate factors such as contouring and support. We also use specialized tools to measure performance criteria like pressure relief, heat retention, and motion isolation.
We test each mattress using various sleep positions to observe whether a mattress is better suited for side, back, or stomach sleeping. We roll around the surface and sit on the edges to gauge ease of movement and perimeter support.
We have tested hundreds of mattresses and bring years of experience in the mattress industry to the test lab. Our testing team covers a wide range of sleep preferences, sleep positions, and body types. This helps us represent as many sleeper types as possible in our reviews.
The US Mattress Renew Mattress is designed as an affordable hybrid option with memory foam and a coil support core to provide a balance of cushioning and support. It caters to a wide range of sleepers, especially side and back sleepers, offering moderate pressure relief and motion isolation.

US Mattress is a Michigan-based retailer that sells a large variety of mattresses, bedding, and furniture products online and at brick-and-mortar locations in the Detroit metro area. Within the Renew lineup, US Mattress offers variations called Restored, Replenish, Invigorate, and Pleasant, providing shoppers with several choices of firmness levels, price-points, and profiles.
We’ll take an in-depth look at the Renew Restored line, exploring their materials, performance, and value. We’ll also share how each bed scored during our sleep lab testing so that you can determine which is the best mattress fit for you.

Side Sleepers
The best mattress for a given individual depends largely on their body type and preferred sleeping position. Side sleepers are more prone to pressure points than any other sleeper type. The majority of their body weight rests on their hips and shoulders when they sleep. This can cause soreness and pressure points for sleepers who use a mattress without enough cushioning. The Renew Restored Mattress has a foam comfort system that successfully addresses these issues, making it an excellent choice for side sleepers.
The medium soft and medium firmness levels of the pillow-top and standard versions have a comfortable blend of contouring and support that is robust enough for people who weigh up to 230 pounds. People who weigh more than 230 pounds generally need stronger support to ensure they don’t sink into the mattress’ support core.
The standard model is the best bet for most side sleepers, since it provides deep compression that alleviates pressure-point discomfort but doesn’t lack support. However, side sleepers under 130 pounds who like a very plush surface may want to consider the pillow-top model.
Back Sleepers
Back sleepers generally need a mattress that balances spinal support and pressure relief. A mattress that excels at one but not the other can be uncomfortable and unsupportive. The Renew Restored is a worthwhile choice for back sleepers weighing up to 230 pounds, especially for those who choose the standard model.
During our in-house tests, the pillow-top’s medium soft feel was a bit too plush for most back sleepers, who found that their midsections sank into the mattress. Testers who weigh under 130 pounds reported that the standard model is extremely comfortable, and those between 130 and 230 pounds also enjoyed its feel. Back sleepers on our testing team who weigh over 230 pounds found that this model did not keep their spine evenly aligned.
Stomach Sleepers
Stomach sleepers need strong support to prevent aches and pains. A mattress that doesn’t have enough support can create a U-shape in their spines. The Renew Restored Mattress isn’t firm enough to prevent this from occurring in stomach sleepers who weigh more than 130 pounds, though during our sleep trials testers under 130 pounds reported that they felt adequately supported.
Mattress Performance
In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.
Motion Isolation
7
/ 10
The Renew by US Mattress Restored has a thick foam comfort system that isolates motion well. The individually wrapped coils move independently rather than as a unit, decreasing bounce.
This model is a great fit for those who co-sleep with kids or couples who frequently wake each other up. Though both models are very good at isolating motion, the pillow-top’s extra 1.25 inches of cushioning gives it a slight edge over the standard model.
Pressure Relief
7.5
/ 10
This model has plenty of memory foam — one of the best available materials for relieving pressure. Memory foam contours to the exact shape of your body, evenly dispersing your weight and absorbing impact.
Pressure relief is especially important for side sleepers. When side sleepers lie down, their weight rests largely in their shoulders and hips, which can get sore without adequate cushioning. The Renew Restored’s foam comfort system cradles these areas, preventing pressure points from developing and alleviating existing discomfort.
Pressure relief is also helpful for people with joint pain, as the foam contours to sensitive areas instead of pushing back against them.
Temperature Control
6.5
/ 10
Pillow-top: 6 / 10
Standard: 7.5 / 10
Hybrid models tend to have above-average temperature control, and the Renew Restored Mattress is no exception. Air moves easily around the support core’s coils, keeping the mattress from absorbing too much heat. The mattress cover helps, too, as its fabric has a cool-to-the-touch design.
Memory foam retains more heat than most other mattress materials. However, the memory foam in the Renew Restored has gel infusions designed to keep you cool. The standard model is a better option for sleepers who run hot or individuals living in warm climates because it has less foam than the pillow-top version.
Edge Support
6.5
/ 10
This model’s pocketed coil support core has enough structure to keep it from sagging at the edges. The foam encasement around the perimeter also helps the mattress maintain edge support.
However, people who sleep at the edge of the mattress might notice that they don’t get even support across the bed’s entire surface. Individuals who have a hard time getting in and out of bed may benefit from a mattress with more robust edge support.
Ease of Movement
6
/ 10
The Renew Restored’s combination of pocketed coils and foam allow for good responsiveness that many sleepers enjoy, though it doesn’t have the bounce or resilient qualities that some innerspring and latex models provide.
Because the comfort system isolates motion so well, it also slightly inhibits it. Shoppers should consider whether they prefer a responsive or contouring feel. While both versions of the Renew Restored allow for fairly easy movement, the extra cushioning of the pillow-top model makes movement slightly more difficult.
Off-Gassing
6.5
/ 10
During the foam manufacturing process, chemical byproducts release in a process called off-gassing. By the time the mattress reaches your home, most of these chemicals have already dissipated. However, trace amounts still exist, and while they aren’t harmful, they may have an unpleasant odor.
The Renew Restored contains a significant amount of foam that has a noticeable smell once the mattress is unwrapped. After setting up the mattress, leave it for several hours to let it off-gas. People with respiratory problems and individuals who are sensitive to smell should unwrap their mattress in a well-ventilated area.
The Renew by US Mattress Restored comes in two profiles, both of which are quite thick. The 16.5-inch model has a pillow-top in addition to three comfort layers, while the 15.25-inch version omits the pillow-top in favor of a firmer surface. The pillow-top option has a medium soft (4) feel, while the standard Renew Restored has a medium (5) firmness level.
The comfort systems of both models begin with 1 inch of Pillow Renew Foam, a proprietary polyfoam material that offers plenty of cushioning. Next is a 2-inch layer of gel-infused memory foam that contours your body to offer deep pressure relief without retaining too much heat. The pillow-top model completes the comfort system with a 4-inch layer of patented Cool Gel Renew Foam that further targets joint pain and pressure point discomfort.
Instead of using the same final comfort layer, the standard Renew model has a 1-inch layer of Medium Renew Foam and only 2 inches of Cool Gel Renew Foam. This combination creates a firmer surface that’s better suited to people over 130 pounds and those who prefer a less conforming feel.
Both models have the same pocketed coil support core that features 15.5-gauge coils. Each coil has its own fabric casing, which decreases motion transfer. The coils have foam reinforcement that wraps the perimeter to heighten edge support. A proprietary CoolTemp Fabric cover protects the mattress and is designed to promote temperature control.
