If you’re in the market for a hybrid mattress, the Tuft & Needle Hybrid is likely to check all of your boxes. Founded in 2014, Tuft & Needle is one of the most well-known mattress in a box retailers. Along with the Hybrid, the company makes two other mattress models: the Tuft & Needle Original Mattress and the Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress. The Original Mattress is a versatile and budget-friendly all-foam mattress while the Mint Mattress is a thicker, more cooling foam model.

The Tuft & Needle Hybrid combines the qualities of all-foam and spring coil construction into a single mattress that still fits in a box. With a pocketed coil support core and a comfort system composed of both adaptive foam and micro-coils, this mattress achieves a balance between resilient bounce and responsive contouring with a rating of 5 on the 1-10 firmness scale.

We’ll break down the key elements of this mattress, including construction, performance, pricing, and more so you can determine if it’s the right model for you.

Side Sleepers

The unique comfort layer composition of the Tuft & Needle Hybrid makes this mattress well suited to side sleeping. Its comfort system’s top layer of adaptive foam provides moderate pressure relief while hugging the hips and shoulders, key points of pressure for side sleepers.

The Tuft & Needle Hybrid also contains a layer of micro-coils inserted between the top and the transitional layer of foam in its comfort system. Overall, this comfort system provides a soft yet resilient sleep surface that supports the sleeper’s hips and shoulders and prevents them from sinking too deeply into the surface of the mattress.

As a result, this mattress is rated a medium on the firmness scale and provides excellent comfort for side sleepers who weigh under 230 pounds.

Back Sleepers

Back sleepers typically place a greater amount of pressure on the lumbar area of the back. To properly cushion and support the lower back and midsection, back sleepers tend to prefer medium to medium firm mattresses. If a mattress is too firm, it will lack cushioning and can create painful pressure points in the lumbar area. But if a mattress is too soft, it will allow the sleeper’s midsection to sink into the sleep surface, preventing proper spinal alignment.

With a medium firmness rating, the Tuft & Needle Hybrid is ideal for back sleepers who weigh under 230 pounds and enjoy a mattress on the softer end of their normal comfort range. However, back sleepers over 230 pounds typically require a more firm sleep surface to achieve a balance between support and contouring and may not prefer the feel of the Tuft & Needle Hybrid.

Stomach Sleepers

Similar to back sleepers, stomach sleepers also require a balance between support and contouring. A mattress that is too soft will allow the sleeper’s midsection to sink too deeply, pushing the body into a U shape, especially if they are using a pillow under their head and neck. For this reason, stomach sleepers tend to prefer slightly firmer mattresses that can support their midsections while still providing a moderate level of cushioning for common pressure points such as the shoulders.

The Tuft & Needle Hybrid is on the softer end of what most stomach sleepers would typically prefer. However, the mattress’s combination of coiled and foam comfort layers provide enough support and responsiveness that sleepers under 230 pounds will find this mattress quite comfortable, especially if they prefer a softer feel. On the other hand, stomach sleepers over 230 pounds will likely need a mattress that provides more support.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

7.5 / 10

TUFT_NEEDLE_HYBRID_MOTIONISO
TUFT_NEEDLE_HYBRID_MOTIONISO

The Tuft & Needle Hybrid offers a moderate level of motion isolation. Hybrid mattresses are typically constructed with a coil-based support core and foam- or latex-based comfort system. This allows sleepers to take advantage of the benefits of each material while minimizing the drawbacks.

Due to the resilient bounce that is characteristic of coil-based support cores, hybrid mattresses tend to have higher levels of motion transfer than their all-foam counterparts. As a result, it’s easier to feel when someone else moves on the mattress.

Like many hybrid mattresses, the Tuft & Needle Hybrid receives an average score for motion isolation. This means sleepers will experience a small amount of motion transfer. Many sleepers will find this works for them, but couples who are extra sensitive to movement during the night may be happier with an all-foam mattress.

Pressure Relief

8 / 10

TUFT_NEEDLE_HYBRID_PRESSURE_SIDE
TUFT_NEEDLE_HYBRID_PRESSURE_SIDE

The Tuft & Needle Hybrid receives an average score for pressure relief. Pressure relief refers to the ability of a mattress to conform and hug the curves of your body. This helps relieve pain that can arise when too much pressure is placed on certain areas like the hips and shoulders, particularly when sleeping on a hard surface.

The comfort system of the Tuft & Needle Hybrid combines a layer of micro-coils inserted between two layers of responsive foam. The foam layers—especially the top layer of Tuft & Needle’s proprietary adaptive foam—provide contouring that relieves a moderate amount of pressure and offers comfort for a wide range of sleep preferences.

Temperature Control

7 / 10

TUFT_NEEDLE_HYBRID_HEATGUN
TUFT_NEEDLE_HYBRID_HEATGUN

A sleeper’s temperature can be affected by several factors including the bedroom temperature, clothing, and the number of sheets or blankets used. However, the type of mattress can also have an impact. Certain mattress materials affect temperature control by absorbing and retaining a sleeper’s body heat or stymying air flow.

All-foam mattresses tend to sleep hotter for these reasons while hybrid mattresses are typically better for controlling temperature effectively throughout the night.

The Tuft & Needle Hybrid is no exception as it sleeps relatively cool. Several design features promote the excellent temperature control of the Tuft & Needle Hybrid. The top layer of foam in the comfort system is infused with cooling gel and heat-dissipating graphite. The coiled spring layers in the comfort system and support also promote air flow.

Edge Support

8 / 10

TUFT_NEEDLE_HYBRID_EDGESIT
TUFT_NEEDLE_HYBRID_EDGESIT

The Tuft & Needle Hybrid contains reinforced springs that provide excellent edge support. This means you’ll feel supported when sitting on the edge of the bed as well as getting out of bed. Additionally, reinforced mattress edges ensure that your sleep surface won’t sag at the edges, reducing the durability and usable surface area of the mattress over time.

Ease of Movement

6.5 / 10

The Tuft & Needle Hybrid Mattress offers excellent ease of movement and scores above average in this category in comparison to most hybrid mattresses.

The comfort system of this mattress contains a layer of micro-coils inserted between two layers of foam. Its support core is made up of pocketed coils. The coils give the Tuft & Needle Hybrid a great deal of resilience which translates to a slight bounce. This allows for greater ease of movement. Sleepers who have reduced mobility will have an easier time moving around and getting up from this mattress.

Off-Gassing

7 / 10

New products can sometimes emit chemical smells after being removed from the packaging. In the case of mattresses, the manufacturing process sometimes produces volatile organic compounds (VOCs). While these compounds are generally not considered harmful, they can result in an unpleasant odor. Mattresses that are sealed and compressed for easier shipping are more likely to retain these compounds. When the mattress is unsealed and allowed to decompress, it can off-gas VOCs.

The Tuft & Needle Hybrid has been tested and certified by CertiPUR-US and GREENGUARD. This means the mattress meets certain chemical emission standards. With low VOC emissions, the Tuft & Needle Hybrid is unlikely to undergo significant off-gassing when compared to other hybrid mattresses.

Tuft & Needle Hybrid Mattress Review Breakdown

This is a 12-inch hybrid mattress with a medium firmness rating of 5 on the 10-point firmness scale. The Tuft & Needle Hybrid is constructed with a three-part comfort layer. The upper layer of the comfort system is polyfoam containing Tuft & Needle’s proprietary adaptive foam as well as graphite and a cooling gel infusion, both of which help wick away heat from the sleeper. Next comes a layer of micro-coils and then a layer of transitional polyfoam. The combination of foam and coil layers provides the soft, contouring comfort of an all-foam mattress with the improved airflow of coiled springs.

Below the comfort layer sits the support core consisting of pocketed coils made from tempered steel. The support core stabilizes the sleeping surface, preventing the sleeper from sinking too far into the mattress. The coils offer resilient support—sleepers may notice a soft bounce—while providing durability.

The Tuft & Needle Hybrid also comes with a reinforced, soft-knit cover made from a micro polyamide and polyester blend. The cover was not intended to be removed. However, its sturdy construction is durable and the cover can be spot cleaned as needed.

This mattress also has several optional add-ons that can be included in your purchase when buying from the Tuft & Needle website. This includes Tuft & Needle’s adjustable bed frame that allows you to modify your sleep position via remote control. Customers can also choose to add-on a Tuft & Needle mattress protector. This removable and machine-washable mattress cover contains a waterproof protective film that is designed to mimic the soft feel of the company’s mattresses.
