Tempur-Pedic is a well-known brand that pioneered bringing memory foam mattresses to the masses. The TEMPUR-ActiveBreeze Smart Bed Mattress is one of the company’s most advanced models, combining a breathable, medium (5) hybrid mattress with an adjustable base engineered for cooling.

In addition to the TEMPUR-ActiveBreeze Smart Bed, Tempur-Pedic produces several other pressure-relieving mattress models, including the TEMPUR-Cloud, TEMPUR-Adapt, the TEMPUR-ProAdapt, and the TEMPUR-Breeze. The main thing that differentiates the TEMPUR-ActiveBreeze Smart Bed Mattress is its cooling system, which also increases the price-point. Additionally, while most Tempur-Pedic models have both all-foam and hybrid options, the TEMPUR-ActiveBreeze Smart Bed only comes in a hybrid design.

We’ll explain the TEMPUR-ActiveBreeze Smart Bed’s unique design and highlight how this construction affects its performance. Additionally, we will share how it held up in our tests, which team members found it most comfortable, and the policies that might affect your purchasing decision.

Testing Team Takeaways

To test the TEMPUR-ActiveBreeze Smart Bed, we had three people on our testing team each take the bed home with them for one week. Here are their initial observations.

Back sleeper

165 pounds

Dunks head in ice water to wake up

I was blown away at how cool this mattress sleeps. Normally there’d be heat retention from the foam layers, but the active temperature controls let you customize the surface to your liking — and your partner can do the same.

Talks in sleep (like a lot)

Like Danny, I was really amazed at the ActiveBreeze’s temperature-regulating abilities. This mattress is very advanced, even compared to other smart beds we’ve tested.

Side and back sleeper

Always sleeps with a weighted blanket

This mattress was a mixed bag for me. On one hand, the temperature controls are outstanding. However, I’m a bigger guy and the surface felt too soft beneath my weight.

Side Sleepers

Like most Tempur-Pedic models, the TEMPUR-ActiveBreeze Smart Bed Mattress is especially great for side sleeping. Two memory foam comfort layers mold closely around a side sleeper’s hips and shoulders, spreading out their weight so that pressure doesn’t accumulate. At the same time, the material provides significant postural support.

The TEMPUR-ActiveBreeze Smart Bed Mattress earned high marks from all of our testers who sleep on their sides. However, our pressure mapping showed that the surface limited pressure buildup most successfully for those between 130 and 230 pounds.

Back Sleepers

Many back sleepers get the support and conforming they need from the TEMPUR-ActiveBreeze Smart Bed Mattress. Its memory foam comfort system lets their hips sink in while cradling their lower backs, supporting spinal alignment.

Team members under 230 pounds reported that they could maintain good posture while lying on their backs. However, the hips of a few testers over 230 pounds sank in slightly more deeply than they felt was ideal, putting some pressure on their lower backs.

Stomach Sleepers

A close-conforming sleep surface usually doesn’t provide stomach sleepers with the support they need, but the TEMPUR-ActiveBreeze Smart Bed Mattress performs well for some who favor the position. Its memory foam layers feel plush against the front of their bodies, while the base’s adjustable lumbar support promotes better posture.

Our testers under 230 pounds rested comfortably on their stomachs. However, those over 230 pounds felt their midsections dipped in too deeply, forcing their lower backs into a U shape. While the adjustable lumbar support helped mitigate the issue, some team members still felt they’d benefit from more support.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

8 / 10

“The ActiveBreeze absorbs most movements, so you’ll notice little to no motion transfer when your partner moves in bed, and vice versa. This is an added bonus for couples who sleep hot.” – Jackson

The TEMPUR-ActiveBreeze Smart Bed Mattress significantly reduces the spread of vibrations that could otherwise interrupt sleep. This common characteristic of memory foam models makes them some of the best mattresses for couples.

With two layers of motion-absorbing memory foam, many vibrations never reach the TEMPUR-ActiveBreeze Smart Bed’s coil core. Those that do reach the core often don’t travel because the pocketed coils can compress independently of each other.

We analyzed the motion isolation with a vibration sensor, detecting minimal movement when we dropped a kettlebell on the opposite side of the bed. Team members also reported noticing little to no vibration when a testing partner changed positions on the mattress.

Pressure Relief

8.5 / 10

“Pressure relief is one of the ActiveBreeze’s main draws, especially if you’re a side sleeper or you weigh less than 130 pounds. The foam layers form a close cradle to soothe your sore spots and prevent new pressure points from forming.” – Danny

As is standard for the best memory foam mattresses, pressure relief is among the top strengths of the TEMPUR-ActiveBreeze Smart Bed. Its two layers of memory foam contour to a sleeper’s body, spreading out weight for more even pressure distribution. The pocketed coil core adds to the effect by dynamically adjusting to the sleeper’s body shape.

Additionally, the bed includes an adjustable base that allows more customized lumbar support and position options to further enhance pressure relief and postural support.

Our pressure mapping showed that the TEMPUR-ActiveBreeze Smart Bed redistributed pressure fairly evenly across our testers’ bodies. This resulted in subjective tester reports of little to no notable pressure accumulation, including when lying on their sides.

Temperature Control

7 / 10

“Temperature control is the ActiveBreeze’s defining strength. The state-of-the-art heating and cooling technology does wonders, even though you may notice a bit of heat buildup in the foam from time to time.” – Brad

The TEMPUR-ActiveBreeze Smart Bed Mattress is designed as a cooling mattress. Its features intended to improve temperature regulation give it superior temperature control to many memory foam models we look at.

The mattress itself starts out with a cover engineered to wick away heat. Next, both layers of memory foam are ventilated to let air circulate. Air also flows through the pocketed coil core, allowing heat to dissipate.

To further enhance the temperature regulation, the bed comes with an adjustable base with built-in fans. Three levels of temperature control are available, and partners can select separate levels for a more personalized experience.

Team members noted that they remained at a neutral temperature on the TEMPUR-ActiveBreeze Smart Bed Mattress. However, we recorded mild lingering heat retention with our laser thermometer and thermal camera.

Edge Support

7 / 10

“The coils provide some pushback, but the ActiveBreeze does buckle a bit when you sleep or sit along its edges. Feelings of roll-off may occur as a result.” – Danny

The TEMPUR-ActiveBreeze Smart Bed Mattress’ level of edge support is on par with many hybrid models. While it doesn’t have dedicated edge reinforcement, the coils in the core move independently to provide full-surface support. With a stable edge, sleepers can often use more of the mattress surface comfortably and sit along the perimeter more securely.

While our testers over 230 pounds noted a bit more edge compression, all of our team members were able to lie and sit along the perimeter of the bed without feeling like they might slide off.

Ease of Movement

6.5 / 10

“I didn’t struggle too much moving on the ActiveBreeze – there’s some nice pushback from the coils – but noticed some sinkage when changing sleep positions. This problem may be compounded for people who weigh more than 230 pounds.” – Jackson

Ease of movement isn’t the TEMPUR-ActiveBreeze Smart Bed Mattress’ strongest area, but it outshines many competing models that use memory foam. Since memory foam hugs closely and regains its shape fairly slowly, body impressions may linger and impede movement. However, the TEMPUR-ActiveBreeze Smart Bed’s pocketed coil core is sufficiently responsive and supportive to prevent the “trapped in the bed” sensation sometimes associated with memory foam.

All of our testers changed positions relatively easily on the mattress, but those over 230 pounds needed to put in slightly more effort since they sank in more deeply.

Off-Gassing

7 / 10

“Off-gassing odor for the ActiveBreeze was strongest for the first few hours after we unboxed the mattress. The smells linger a bit, but should completely clear out within two days.” – Brad

Like any mattress with synthetic foam, the TEMPUR-ActiveBreeze Smart Bed may have an initial odor left over from manufacturing. Off-gassing occurs when volatile organic compounds (VOCs) created during foam production linger in the material. You may experience this as a “new mattress” smell.

While VOCs aren’t typically seen as harmful, some sleepers dislike their odor. Ventilating the bedroom can help dissipate the smell more quickly.

Our team members noticed a mild to moderate initial odor when the TEMPUR-ActiveBreeze Smart Bed arrived in our sleep lab, but they observed little to no odor the next day.

Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-ActiveBreeze Mattress Review Breakdown

The TEMPUR-ActiveBreeze Smart Bed Mattress is a medium (5) hybrid model measuring 13 inches thick. It also comes with an adjustable base.

The mattress itself starts with a cover designed for cooling. Its material incorporates fibers engineered to transfer heat away from the body, giving it a cool-to-the-touch feel. The cover is also removable and machine-washable so you can freshen up the surface more easily.

Next, two layers of memory foam provide the trademark hug that Tempur-Pedic mattresses are known for. These two comfort layers adapt to the sleeper’s unique shape, molding to their body to ease pressure while supporting the spine. At the same time, both of these layers are ventilated with small holes so that heat can escape and the base can effectively circulate air through the mattress.

The final layer of the mattress uses individually pocketed coils, which add responsiveness and support while enhancing the contouring.

In addition to the mattress itself, the TEMPUR-ActiveBreeze Smart Bed comes with the TEMPUR-Ergo ProSmart Air Base. This adjustable base includes head and foot lifts, giving you more sleep position options. It also has built-in fans with three settings for more control over the temperature. Each partner can choose a separate setting for their side of the bed. Additionally, the base has a unique adjustable lumbar support feature that lifts up to six inches to promote better posture based on individual needs.

When used in conjunction with the associated app, the TEMPUR-Ergo ProSmart Air Base also has sleep tracking capabilities. It can share insights into your sleep quality, provide coaching to help you sleep better, automatically raise your head if it detects snoring, and provide soothing sounds or massage designed to help you fall asleep.
