ReST (short for Responsive Surface Technology) is a mattress and sleep product brand that launched in 2015. The flagship ReST Bed is an airbed that offers customizable firmness settings. The mattress has a memory foam comfort layer and a smart sensor layer for pressure relief. It pairs with a smartphone app, which lets users adjust the mattress with manual or automatic settings.

The mattress has a support core of air chambers, five on each side, that users can adjust individually. This makes it an ideal choice for couples. The app settings control the five zones of the mattress, supporting the head, shoulders, lumbar region, hips, and legs. The ReST Bed operates with a closed WiFi system. The customization options for the ReST Bed make it stand out as a smart airbed.

We’ll break down the construction and firmness settings of the ReST Bed in this comprehensive review. This guide includes pricing and sizing information for the ReST Bed, along with our recommendations based on sleeping position and body type. We’ll also cover the company’s policies, including shipping fees, returns, and warranty coverage. Read on to find out if the ReST is the best mattress for you.

Please note: at this time, ReST is not accepting new mattress orders.

The ReST Bed offers comfort and support for every body type and sleeping position. Since the firmness of the mattress can be customized, how well-suited it is for each sleep position depends on the firmness chosen. We’ll break down special considerations for each sleeping position here.

Side Sleepers

The best mattresses for side sleepers are softer mattress that conform to the shape of their bodies, as this prevents pressure from building at the shoulders and hips. The contouring memory foam and customization options of the ReST Bed make it an excellent choice for side sleepers of all weights.

The soft comfort system conforms closely to relieve pressure and cushion pressure points. Sleepers can see how much pressure is applied at their shoulders and hips with the sensor map on the app, and adjust the firmness of the mattress accordingly. Side sleepers will want to ensure that the mattress is soft enough at the shoulders and hips, while also being firm enough in the lumbar region to keep the spine aligned.

Back Sleepers

Back sleepers need lumbar support for spinal alignment and to alleviate pressure on the lower back. The ReST Bed includes a lumbar zone that users can set to their preferred firmness. A medium firm to firm setting can keep the lower back from sinking into the mattress excessively. This keeps the spine aligned and prevents lower back pain.

Additionally, the memory foam layer of the ReST Bed conforms closely to the shape of the body. This fills any gap between the lower back and the mattress. The additional pressure relief and contouring are beneficial for back sleepers in each weight category.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers need additional firmness at the abdomen and hips to keep these areas from sinking in. If the mattress is too soft, these areas press into the mattress and put undue pressure on the lower back. The ReST Bed has a soft memory foam comfort layer that usually would not appeal to stomach sleepers.

However, since the firmness of the bed can be customized, users can set the mattress to be firm at the hips for additional support. A softer setting at the shoulders cushions the chest and shoulders for additional comfort. Stomach sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds can use softer settings on the mattress, but those who weigh more than 130 pounds will benefit from firmer settings for proper support. The best mattresses for heavy sleepers tend to be on the firmer side, so you can customize your ReST accordingly.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

8 / 10

Memory foam isolates motion exceptionally well, as it responds to pressure and returns to its original shape slowly. The ReST Bed uses four inches of memory foam in its comfort system. This thick layer absorbs movements and prevents them from transferring across the bed.

There is minimal bounce to the ReST Bed. In addition to memory foam in the comfort system, the ReST Bed has separate chambers on each side of the bed. This helps minimize movements rippling from one area of the bed to another. This results in better motion isolation than the average airbed and is beneficial for couples.

Most users will not be disturbed by their partner’s movements throughout the night. This includes shifting positions or getting in and out of bed. That said, it should be noted that the sensor layer does not absorb motion. This can result in some motion transfer, but it is minimal.

The adjustable firmness of the ReST Bed does not impact motion isolation to a significant degree, as the memory foam comfort layer is responsible for most of the motion isolation.

Pressure Relief

8 / 10

The sensor map in the ReST Bed detects and adjusts to pressure when the bed is set in the auto-position or automatic modes. Five zones in the support core correspond to areas in the body where pressure could develop, including the shoulders, lower back, and hips. Users can set the mattress to provide customized pressure relief based on their sleeping positions and personal preferences. This allows the ReST Bed to relieve pressure better than the average mattress.

In addition to pressure-mapping and customizable firmness settings, the ReST Bed has four inches of memory foam in its comfort system. Memory foam responds to pressure and conforms closely to the shape of the body. This ensures pressure points are cushioned regardless of the bed’s firmness settings.

Users can view the bed’s pressure map on the smartphone app and adjust settings accordingly. The firmness of each zone includes a sliding scale from soft (3) to firm (8). Softer settings help cushion areas like the shoulders and hips, while firmer settings offer more support to help keep the spine aligned.

Temperature Control

6.5 / 10

As the ReST Bed has a memory foam comfort layer that conforms closely, there is the possibility of some heat retention. However, the memory foam is infused with gel to draw heat away from the body and dissipate it. The performance fabric cover is moisture-wicking and cooling to offset heat retention. The mattress also has ample airflow throughout to maintain a temperature neutral feel.

Softer settings on the ReST Bed allow users to sink more deeply into the memory foam. This can restrict airflow around the body, so hot sleepers may be more comfortable with firmer settings.

ReST also offers an add-on climate comfort system option for the ReST Bed. This system circulates air to adjust the temperature of the mattress and is available for an additional charge.

Edge Support

6.5 / 10

The ReST Bed has interlocking edge support around the perimeter of the bed. This high-density foam perimeter prevents sagging. Overall, the mattress has an average amount of edge support for an airbed.

Users can sleep comfortably near the edge of the bed without feeling like they may roll off the bed. Those who sit on the edge of the bed should also feel supported.

The memory foam comfort layer compresses, but not significantly. The sturdy perimeter keeps users from sinking in excessively. The amount of edge support is consistent, whether the mattress settings are soft or firm.

Ease of Movement

5 / 10

Soft memory foam in the ReST Bed is highly responsive and compresses under pressure. That said, the memory foam springs back to its original shape relatively quickly. This allows for somewhat better ease of movement than a traditional memory foam mattress.

When the ReST Bed is configured with softer settings, sleepers sink into the mattress more. This can make it more difficult to change positions as needed. Combination sleepers may want to set the mattress to firmer levels for better ease of movement.

Since the ReST Bed has a support core of air chambers, there is minimal bounce. Some combination sleepers and couples may find they prefer the bounce of a hybrid mattress with an innerspring support core.

Off-Gassing

6.5 / 10

There is an initial odor when the ReST Bed is first set up. This is due to the memory foam comfort system, which is prone to off-gassing. The smell is not considered harmful, and is to be expected from any mattress that incorporates synthetic foam in its construction.

Any off-gassing of the ReST Bed dissipates within a few days. Keeping the bedroom well-ventilated will help to expedite this process and ensure ample airflow.

ReST Bed Mattress Review Breakdown

The ReST Bed is an airbed mattress with adjustable firmness settings. It has a higher profile than the average mattress, standing at 13 inches tall. This includes a thick memory foam comfort system, pressure-mapping sensor layer, and zoned air chamber support.

The cover of the mattress is made with performance fabric. This “Sleep Skin” cover helps regulate temperature with a cooling feel. It can be unzipped and removed from the mattress for cleaning. The cover is machine-washable.

Beneath the smart performance cover of the ReST Bed is four inches of gel-infused memory foam. This layer relieves pressure points by closely conforming to the shape of the body. The gel in this layer is conductive and it draws heat away from the body. Though it is a thick comfort layer, users can still feel the support of the air chambers below as they adjust the mattress to their preferred firmness settings.

The second layer of the ReST Bed is a smart sensor layer. This antimicrobial knit blend layer incorporates 1,000 data points on a grid. This layer monitors pressure for the app and air pumps to make adjustments as needed.

The support core of the ReST Bed is made of medical-grade polyurethane air chambers. This core includes five air chambers on each side of the bed, for a total of ten chambers that customize the amount of support at the head, shoulders, lumbar, hips, and legs. Users can adjust each zone on both sides of the bed individually. The air chambers in the ReST Bed have welded seams to prevent leaks. A pump with hoses for each chamber sits underneath the bed.

The ReST Bed pairs with a smartphone app for full customization. There are three modes available: manual, auto-position, and automatic. The manual setting offers complete customization for users. They can set the five zones separately and lock in these settings. This means the bed will not change its firmness levels throughout the night.

The auto-position option includes settings for back and side sleeping. The sensors in the ReST Bed detect when sleepers change between these two positions and adjust to the preset levels.

The automatic setting has users set their preferred level of support, and the bed automatically adjusts as users shift positions throughout the night. This allows it to maintain pressure relief and firmness regardless of sleeping position.

While the ReST Bed is silent once manual mode is set, sleepers may notice some noise on the auto-position and automatic settings. This is due to the air pumps adjusting the bed for the sleeper throughout the night.
