Our team at Sleep Foundation conducts extensive hands-on tests for each mattress to provide you with the most reliable, data-driven recommendations and reviews. Below are key guidelines that inform our testing methodology:
Our testers lie on the surface of each mattress to evaluate factors such as contouring and support. We also use specialized tools to measure performance criteria like pressure relief, heat retention, and motion isolation.
We test each mattress using various sleep positions to observe whether a mattress is better suited for side, back, or stomach sleeping. We roll around the surface and sit on the edges to gauge ease of movement and perimeter support.
We have tested hundreds of mattresses and bring years of experience in the mattress industry to the test lab. Our testing team covers a wide range of sleep preferences, sleep positions, and body types. This helps us represent as many sleeper types as possible in our reviews.
Solid support for back and stomach sleepers over 130 pounds
Sleeps very cool
Good motion isolation for those who share a bed
Cons
May be too firm for side sleepers under 130 pounds
Priced slightly higher than the average hybrid
Doesn’t provide as much pressure relief as a typical memory foam mattress
Purple is a Utah-based brand that has carved a niche in the mattress industry by incorporating its unique GelFlex Grid into each of its designs. The GelFlex Grid is a layer of gel columns made from a hyperelastic polymer. It’s engineered to balance support, pressure relief, and motion isolation.
There are three collections of Purple mattresses. The Essential Collection includes four foam models, each topped with GelFlex Grid technology. The Premium Collection comprises three hybrid mattresses with added thickness and responsiveness. The brand’s Luxe Collection contains three high-profile mattresses, each with unique features that account for their luxury price-points.
The base model in Purple’s Premium Collection, the Purple Restore Mattress, has a hybrid design that layers the GelFlex Grid atop dense polyfoam and a support core of pocketed coils. The airy design of the GelFlex buckling column gel helps regulate temperature on the bed’s surface, making the Restore an excellent choice for hot sleepers.

Side Sleepers
People who prefer sleeping on their side usually benefit from plusher surfaces that contour to the hips and shoulders. A mattress that is too firm can push the spine out of alignment and cause pressure to build up.
While side sleepers on our testing team weighing more than 130 pounds found that the GelFlex Grid offers adequate pressure relief, lighter individuals felt too much pushback in the shoulders and hips, causing pressure points to form. These sleepers felt they received better pressure relief from the Purple Rejuvenate, which has a medium (5) firmness level.
Back Sleepers
Back sleepers often need a mid-range firmness to keep their spine aligned. However, the optimal firmness level also varies based on body weight, with heavier people generally requiring firmer beds.
Unsurprisingly, back sleepers over 130 pounds gave this firm (7) mattress very good comfort ratings, while testers under that weight level were less enthusiastic, noting that they prefer the more balanced feel of the all-foam Purple Plus.
Stomach Sleepers
Stomach sleepers generally benefit from the firmest mattresses of any sleep position. This position needs extra support to keep the midsection from sinking and creating an unnatural arch in the lower back.
Stomach sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds gave the Purple Restore the highest marks of anyone on our testing team, noting that it offers an ideal balance of strong support and subtle contouring. Testers over 230 pounds were also pleased, though some said they wished the mattress were a tick firmer. Those under 130 pounds reported that the medium firm (6) feel of the flagship Purple Mattress is more their style.
Mattress Performance
In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.
Motion Isolation
7
/ 10
Hybrid beds can be a mixed bag when it comes to motion isolation, but the Purple Restore Mattress stands out for its impressive performance in this category.
Our testing team found that the GelFlex Grid limits the transfer of motion across the mattress surface. Meanwhile, the mattress’ support core uses individually pocketed coils that resist the transfer of motion better than traditional innerspring designs.
Pressure Relief
7
/ 10
The buckling column gel in the GelFlex Grid supports weight when it is broadly distributed and compresses under the concentrated weight of heavier parts of the body that need deeper cushioning, like the hips and shoulders.
While the Restore should provide sufficient pressure relief for most sleepers, side sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds may prefer a softer mattress with deeply contouring foam.
Temperature Control
9
/ 10
The Purple Restore offers some of the best temperature control we’ve seen in a cooling mattress, making it ideal for those who sleep hot.
The pocketed coil support core allows air to flow through the mattress from edge to edge. Meanwhile, the GelFlex Grid is ventilated with air channels in each column that further encourage airflow through the comfort layer.
Edge Support
7.5
/ 10
The Purple Restore’s buckling column gel is designed to sink when weight is concentrated in a particular area. While this would typically be a problem when sitting on the edge of the bed, Purple surrounds the GelFlex Grid with a perimeter of dense polyfoam for added edge support.
Ease of Movement
6.5
/ 10
Ease of movement is generally facilitated when a mattress has some springiness that pushes back against the body’s movements. Firmer mattresses naturally offer a bit more pushback to aid in easier movement.
The firm (7) feel and hybrid construction of the Purple Restore offers very good ease of movement thanks to its responsive core of pocketed coils.
Off-Gassing
7
/ 10
Mattresses that use foams in their construction are subject to some level of off-gassing when they are newly unpackaged. These materials release volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are tiny particles that give off a noticeable new mattress smell.
We found the Purple Restore Mattress has a moderate amount of off-gassing when it is brand new, similar to most hybrid mattresses. Unboxing it in a well-ventilated room should help expedite the off-gassing process.
The Purple Restore is an 11.5-inch hybrid mattress wrapped in a cover composed of a blend of polyester, rayon, and elastic. Its comfort system begins with 2 inches of Purple’s signature GelFlex Grid. Made from a hyperelastic polymer known as buckling column gel, it has a repeating geometric pattern that offers a unique blend of comfort and support. The grid is encased in polyfoam around its perimeter to provide added edge support.
Under the GelFlex Grid is a transitional layer of polyfoam that adds support and separates the buckling column gel from the underlying support core. The Purple Restore has a support core made of individually pocketed, 8-inch metal coils that run from edge to edge. This design helps enable airflow, which boosts temperature regulation.

Mattress Prices and Sizing
The Purple Restore Mattress is part of the brand’s Premium Collection, with features that elevate it above the less expensive all-foam models in the Essential Collection. Hybrids often cost more than a traditional innerspring mattress or memory foam mattress because of the materials used and the more complex construction. That said, we consider the Restore to be a mid-range hybrid, only slightly more expensive than the average hybrid mattress.
This model comes in five of the six standard mattress sizes, as well as split king. It is not sold in twin size.
