Our team at Sleep Foundation conducts extensive hands-on tests for each mattress to provide you with the most reliable, data-driven recommendations and reviews. Below are key guidelines that inform our testing methodology:
Our testers lie on the surface of each mattress to evaluate factors such as contouring and support. We also use specialized tools to measure performance criteria like pressure relief, heat retention, and motion isolation.
We test each mattress using various sleep positions to observe whether a mattress is better suited for side, back, or stomach sleeping. We roll around the surface and sit on the edges to gauge ease of movement and perimeter support.
We have tested hundreds of mattresses and bring years of experience in the mattress industry to the test lab. Our testing team covers a wide range of sleep preferences, sleep positions, and body types. This helps us represent as many sleeper types as possible in our reviews.
The Purple Rejuvenate mattress expands on Purple’s product line by combining their Purple Grid technology with multiple layers of foam and a strong coil core. The result is a medium firmness bed with balanced performance and strong cushioning for side and back sleepers.

Purple has been a major player in the online mattress industry since launching in 2015. The company’s mattresses are best known for the GelFlex Grid, a proprietary comfort layer that offers the same contouring as foam without absorbing and trapping much heat. The Rejuvenate hybrid mattress — one of the most recent additions to Purple’s mattress lineup — pairs the GelFlex Grid with a robust pocketed coil system for a design that’s both adaptive and supportive.
There are two other mattresses in the Rejuvenate line, the RejuvenatePlus and RejuvenatePremier, which are thicker and softer than the standard model. This is Purple’s luxury hybrid line, so sticker prices are above average. Additional offerings include the flagship Purple Mattress, Purple Hybrid, and Purple Plus. All of these mattresses feature the GelFlex Grid.
We’ll focus on the standard Purple Rejuvenate and discuss how the mattress performed during our hands-on tests. We’ll also cover materials and construction, prices, available sizes, and Purple’s shipping, return, and warranty policies.

Side Sleepers
During our tests, the Purple Rejuvenate earned its most favorable ratings from side sleepers weighing up to 230 pounds. These testers were especially impressed with the mattress for its deep, even contouring. The GelFlex Grid provides plush cushioning without the hug of memory foam, and the zoned coils help ensure proper support for the shoulders and hips — two common areas of pressure buildup for people who use this position.
Most of our side sleepers over 230 pounds sank to an uncomfortable degree on the Rejuvenate. Despite extra coil pushback around the midsection, they did not receive enough support from the mattress. Our tests have shown side sleepers in this weight range need some cushioning to promote even alignment and alleviate pressure along the spine, but also extra reinforcement to prevent their bodies from compressing the mattress too deeply.
Back Sleepers
As with our side sleepers, the best ratings from back sleepers during testing came from those who weigh 230 pounds or less — but within this group, reactions were more mixed. Some appreciated the deep cushioning and extra support beneath the torso and hips, while others found the mattress too soft. We’ve ultimately given the mattress a good rating for back sleepers in this weight range, with the caveat that some may find the mattress more comfortable than others.
We don’t recommend the Rejuvenate for back sleepers over 230 pounds. Generally speaking, these sleepers need a mattress with a rating of medium firm (6) or higher to ensure even support and minimal sinkage around the midsection. All of our testers in these weight and position groups agreed the Rejuvenate was too soft to meet their needs.
Stomach Sleepers
Stomach sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds gave the Rejuvenate positive ratings. While some found the surface too plush, the majority received a good balance of cushioning and support from the mattress. These testers also appreciated the extra pushback around their midsections. Our stomach sleepers weighing more than 130 pounds differed in their opinion of the mattress. For most, the Rejuvenate did not provide adequate reinforcement and some noted pressure buildup in the lower back — a common indicator of insufficient support.
Stomach sleepers are prone to more discomfort than those who use other sleep positions. This is because people tend to carry more weight in the front of their bodies, and lying face-down can cause them to sink into their mattress. For this reason, we typically recommend firmer mattresses for stomach sleeping.
Mattress Performance
In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.
Motion Isolation
8
/ 10
The Purple Rejuvenate is fairly soft, and the GelFlex Grid — while somewhat responsive — absorbs movement well. Most of our testers noticed little to no motion transfer when lying side by side on the mattress. We expect the same for couples and co-sleepers who use the Rejuvenate. Our team’s kettlebell tests also yielded above-average results.
Motion isolation is key for anyone who shares their mattress with a partner. If your sleep surface feels responsive or springy, you’re likely to notice ripples of motion transfer when the other person changes sleep positions or gets up during the night. Mattresses like the Rejuvenate that absorb movement and isolate transfer to one side of the bed shouldn’t cause significant sleep disruptions.
Pressure Relief
8.5
/ 10
Pressure relief is another testing area in which the Rejuvenate performed better than the average hybrid. The GelFlex Grid contours closely without the hug of solid memory foam, and the underlying polyfoam layers provide additional cushioning to alleviate sore spots. The support core also plays a role in reducing pressure, since thicker coils rest beneath your midsection and help maintain an even surface for your body.
Softer mattresses with adaptive comfort layers generally alleviate pressure more than firmer models. That said, your body type and sleep position also come into play. Our tests show the Purple Rejuvenate provides the best pressure relief for side sleepers weighing up to 230 pounds and back sleepers under 130 pounds. Heavier individuals who use these positions as well as stomach sleepers may need a more supportive mattress to reduce their pressure points.
Temperature Control
7
/ 10
Purple mattresses have historically excelled during our temperature control tests, and the Rejuvenate is no exception. This can largely be attributed to the GelFlex Grid. Unlike solid foam, the grid is designed with pockets that allow air to circulate across the surface. Our thermal mapping sensors detected very little heat buildup, and none of our testers felt excessively warm when lying on the mattress.
Hybrids tend to sleep cool because their coil layers circulate air throughout the interior and promote a comfortable temperature for the entire mattress. The Rejuvenate and other Purple models take temperature control a step further with their breathable comfort layers. If you’re a hot sleeper, we highly recommend the Rejuvenate.
Edge Support
7
/ 10
The Rejuvenate’s coil system is encased in dense foam. This is intended to bolster the perimeter and prevent the edges from compressing too much when you sleep or sit along the edges of the mattress. However, our tests show the perimeter still sinks to a noticeable degree. This is largely due to the soft comfort layers and the absence of reinforced perimeter coils, which we’ve found more effective for edge support than foam encasements.
Mattresses with strong edge support enable you to get in and out of bed with relative ease. A sturdy perimeter also allows you to use your entire sleep surface, rather than feeling confined to the middle. Most of our testers under 130 pounds felt secure sitting on the Rejuvenate’s edges, but heavier individuals reported moderate to significant compression. This means the Rejuvenate performs below average for a hybrid in terms of edge support.
Ease of Movement
6.5
/ 10
The Rejuvenate’s GelFlex Grid is more responsive than traditional polyfoam or memory foam, but the mattress’ relatively soft feel means you’re more likely to sink when moving across the surface or changing positions. This can be problematic if you’re a combination sleeper, prone to tossing and turning, or likely to get up during the night. Sinkage during movement can also negatively impact sex.
The coils deliver a bit of springiness to make the Rejuvenate easier for movement than Purple’s all-foam models. At the same time, most hybrids we’ve tested feel stable when we evaluate them for ease of movement. You may not have trouble moving on the Rejuvenate if you weigh less than 130 pounds, but those who weigh more should expect at least some resistance.
Off-Gassing
7
/ 10
The GelFlex Grid does not emit as much initial off-gassing as traditional mattress foam, but you’ll likely notice some odor for a day or two after unboxing. These smells come from volatile organic compounds (VOC) released by synthetic foam. VOCs are relatively harmless, but they carry a chemical smell many people find unpleasant.
We recommend airing out the Rejuvenate in a well-ventilated room for at least 24 hours before sleeping on it. This allows time for the odor to dissipate.
The Purple Rejuvenate is a hybrid mattress available in one firmness level, medium, which corresponds to a 5 on our 10-point firmness scale. Measuring 15.5 inches thick, the mattress is considered a high-profile model. Keep this height in mind when choosing bedding, as you may need a set with a deep-pocket fitted sheet.
The comfort system consists of Purple’s proprietary GelFlex Grid sandwiched between polyfoam layers. The topmost foam layer is fairly adaptive, so you’ll notice some plush cushioning when you get into bed, and the GelFlex Grid also has contouring properties, but the bottom foam layer is denser to form a buffer between the comfort layers and the support core. GelFlex Grid is composed of hyperelastic polymer material molded into a grid shape. This allows air to circulate more freely and helps the mattress stay cool.
The Rejuvenate’s support core contains pocketed coils arranged into three zones based on gauge, or coil thickness. Stronger low-gauge coils support the area between your shoulders and hips, where most people carry the majority of their weight, so you’ll feel more pushback in the midsection and gentler cradling elsewhere. The mattress cover is made from a soft, stretchy blend of polyester, viscose, and Lycra spandex.
