Mattresses with foam layers typically produce some off-gassing due to the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from manufacturing. These compounds are generally harmless but can have an unpleasant chemical smell. Because it is a hybrid model with a breathable core, the Plank Firm Luxe should air out relatively quickly. If you’re sensitive to smells, plan to give your mattress between 24 to 72 hours for the odor to dissipate.

Brooklyn Bedding is one of the pioneers of the mattress in a box concept, with over 25 years in the industry. The company offers a variety of sleep accessories, including pillows, sheets, blankets, and foundations, and a robust mattress line with models to accommodate virtually any sleep style, position preference, and weight group.
The Plank Mattress is an all-foam model designed to be exceptionally even and supportive. The Plank Firm Luxe — previously known as the Plank Hybrid — is similar, but it uses a coil core to provide extra bounce. This flippable model has a firm side (7) and an extra firm side (9). Each side includes a quilted top layer and polyfoam comfort system for deep compression support with minimal loft. A 6-inch core of individually wrapped coils supports both sides of the bed. The mattress measures 13.25 inches thick.
Because of its firm and extra firm options, the Plank Firm Luxe is particularly suitable for sleepers who like to sleep on top of their mattress as opposed to sinking into it. This firmness offers top-notch ease of movement and edge support, helping sleepers adjust positions and utilize the entire surface of the mattress. Additionally, an optional cooling panel can be sewn into both sides for an additional charge. This panel is made of phase change material designed to feel cool to the touch and maintain a consistent temperature.
We’ll analyze the Plank Firm Luxe Mattress’ construction, performance, and policies to help you decide if this model is the right option for you.

Brooklyn Bedding Plank Firm Luxe Video Review
Watch the video below to see how the Brooklyn Bedding Plank Firm Luxe performed when put to the test in our lab.
Sleeping Style and Body Weight
Side Sleepers
Side sleepers are typically most comfortable on a mattress that relieves pressure by contouring to the body. The Plank Firm Luxe includes a firm and an extra firm side, which may not be suitable for side sleeping due to limited cradling.
Side sleepers under 230 pounds may find that the Plank Firm Luxe does not have enough give to relieve pressure and promote spinal alignment. Those who weigh over 230 pounds might sleep comfortably on the firm side because their hips and shoulders should sink slightly into the quilting and two layers of polyfoam without sagging.
Back Sleepers
Back sleepers traditionally need an even sleep surface that conforms to the body to support the hips and lumbar region.
The firm side of the Plank Firm Luxe should provide a good balance of contouring and support for back sleepers over 130 pounds. Those in this weight group who prefer a sturdier feel may also like the extra firm side. However, back sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds will likely find both the firm and extra firm sides too rigid, which could lead to lower back discomfort.
Stomach Sleepers
Stomach sleepers often experience a sore neck and/or back when sleeping on a mattress with inadequate support. Because of the potential for strain, it’s important to find a mattress that is firm enough to prevent midsection sinkage while still offering enough cushioning for comfort.
The firm side of the Plank Firm Luxe performs exceptionally well for stomach sleepers over 130 pounds, and the extra firm side also earns high marks from stomach sleepers over 230 pounds. The sturdy construction limits sinkage, while the quilting provides subtle cushioning. For stomach sleepers under 130 pounds, the firm side of the Plank Firm Luxe offers even support, but the extra firm side may be too firm.
Mattress Performance
In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.
Plank Firm Luxe Mattress Review Breakdown
The firm (7) side of the Plank Firm Luxe starts with a 1.5-inch quilted cotton-microfiber blend layer over 1 inch of responsive polyfoam and 2 inches of high-density support polyfoam. These layers offer some give with little to no hug, enhancing the ease of movement. Because sleepers don’t sink into this mattress much, getting in and out of bed and changing positions should be easy.
While the extra firm (9) side has a similar construction, its comfort system is thinner. It starts with a .75-inch quilted cotton-microfiber top and 2 inches of high-density support foam. With fewer foam layers and a thinner quilted top, the extra firm side is denser and less flexible. For sleepers who prefer to sleep on top of a mattress, the extra firm side provides little body contouring and excellent edge support. This side of the Plank Firm Luxe allows sleepers to occupy every part of the mattress without feeling the need to lay in the center to avoid the edges.
The core of the mattress is 6 inches of individually wrapped coils, which gives the Plank Firm Luxe a responsive feel. Both sides offer an optional phase change material cooling panel that can be sewn in. This is intended to enhance temperature regulation.
