Founded in 2019, Off-Road Bedding specializes in sleep products for home and travel. The Arizona-based company offers standard and RV mattresses, gel toppers, sheets, pillows, and mattress protectors.

ORB sells a mix of hybrid and memory foam mattresses. For shoppers on a budget, the company offers an all-foam and a hybrid option: the ORB Premium Signature Memory Foam Mattress and the 10″ ORB Luxe Hybrid Mattress.

The manufacturer also features two higher-end hybrid mattresses: the 13″ ORB Luxury Cooling Mattress and the 14″ ORB Luxury Cooling Pillowtop Mattress. Both are constructed with layers of memory foam and polyfoam over a pocketed coil core.

We’ll focus on the 13″ ORB Performance Hybrid Mattress. The model is notable for its cooling fabric cover that incorporates far infrared rays (FIR), a technology engineered to speed up muscle recovery. The mattress comes in three firmness levels and in both standard and RV sizes.

The ORB Performance Hybrid is available in three firmness levels that the company calls Soft, Medium, and Firm. These correspond to medium soft (4), medium firm (6), and firm (7) on our 10-point firmness scale. Body weight, sleep position, and personal preference affect a sleeper’s ideal level of mattress firmness. Read on to learn which is the best mattress for you.

  • Choose Medium Soft if… you’re a side sleeper under 230 pounds or a back sleeper under 130 pounds. People in need of extra pressure relief may benefit from the comfort system’s deeper cradling.
  • Choose Medium Firm if… you like even contouring with a moderate amount of pushback. This versatile firmness level is ideal for combination sleepers since it accommodates each sleep position almost equally well. We found the balance of cradling and support especially fitting for sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds.
  • Choose Firm if… you’re a stomach sleeper or you weigh over 230 pounds. Minimal contouring prevents heavier body areas from sinking excessively, and sleepers who frequently adjust positions can benefit from the mattress’ responsive surface. We also found it sleeps slightly cooler than the softer models since it permits the least amount of sinkage.

Side Sleepers

On the whole, the ORB Performance Hybrid reinforced good sleep posture for our side sleepers. Plush memory foam cradles the hips and shoulders, while adaptive polyfoam promotes even weight distribution. The pocketed coil core helps keep the hips from sinking below the shoulders so the spine stays level.

Side sleepers who regularly alternate sides appreciated the higher responsiveness on the medium firm and firm mattresses. Testers over 230 pounds felt particularly supported on the firmer models while still getting enough pressure relief. Our side sleepers under 130 pounds were somewhat critical of the firm option, as they would have liked more sink below the hips and shoulders.

Back Sleepers

Reviews were generally favorable from our back sleepers across weight brackets. Some comfort systems overly conform to the lower back, moving the spine out of alignment. The ORB Performance Hybrid didn’t present this issue since it uses foams with high elasticity that quickly recover shape. The pocketed coil core minimizes sinkage below the lumbar region, while transitional memory foam buffers the shoulders and legs.

We found that each weight group of back sleepers on our team found exceptional support on a different level of firmness. The best mattresses for heavy sleepers tend to be quite firm, whereas lighter sleepers prefer soft. Our back sleepers under 130 pounds raved about the medium soft model, while those between 130 and 230 pounds appreciated the balanced contouring of the medium firm model. Testers over 230 pounds found that the firm model offered the right level of support.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers need a fairly supportive mattress to maintain neutral spine alignment. Our stomach sleepers were most impressed with the medium firm and firm models. These mattresses offer minimal to moderate contouring, so they’re better equipped to reinforce the midsection.

We can’t recommend the medium soft option for stomach sleepers over 130 pounds, as these testers experienced deep sinkage below the torso area. This resulted in an unnatural curve to the spine, which can strain the lower back.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

7.5 / 10

Medium Soft: 8 / 10

Medium Firm: 6 / 10

Firm: 6 / 10

We found that the Performance Hybrid isolates motion well, so excess movement shouldn’t ripple across its surface. The thick foam comfort system limits surface vibrations, while pocketed coils reduce motion transfer. The high-density polyfoam base acts as a shock absorber for the bouncy coil core.

Our testers noticed the least amount of motion transfer on the medium soft model since it offers deeper contouring. The medium firm and firm mattresses are more responsive, but motion transfer is still minimal for a hybrid mattress.

Pressure Relief

8.5 / 10

Medium Soft: 8 / 10

Medium Firm: 6 / 10

Firm: 4 / 10

The Performance Hybrid uses adaptive polyfoam to distribute body weight, while plusher memory foam cradles sleepers. Our testers found that this combination relieved tension, but pressure relief varies depending on the firmness level.

We gave the medium soft model the highest rating since it provides the most cushioning. This is especially true for side sleepers and people under 230 pounds. The medium firm mattress eased pressure buildup for testers of all sleep positions, thanks to its balanced contouring.

In general, pressure relief was the least notable on the firm mattress since it permits minimal sinkage. The sturdier surface felt a little stiff for our testers under 130 pounds, but it promoted spine alignment for most of our stomach and back sleepers.

Temperature Control

7 / 10

Medium Soft: 6 / 10

Medium Firm: 6 / 10

Firm: 8 / 10

Many so-called cooling mattresses don’t actually live up to their marketing hype, but this wasn’t the case with the ORB Performance Hybrid.

Our testers found that the Smart Fabric cover was cool to the touch, as it’s engineered to draw heat away from the surface. Copper and gel infusions are added to the foam comfort layers to improve breathability. The pocketed coils have a porous structure conducive to airflow.

The firm option sleeps somewhat cooler than the softer models since it doesn’t hug the body quite as much.

Edge Support

7.5 / 10

Medium Soft: 4 / 10

Medium Firm: 6 / 10

Firm: 8 / 10

Edge support on the Performance Hybrid increases relative to firmness.

Couples or people who like sleeping near the sides of a bed may want to opt for one of the firmer models since they compress less. The firm mattress has the sturdiest edges, so this model is the best fit for those who prioritize edge support.

Ease of Movement

6.5 / 10

Medium Soft: 4 / 10

Medium Firm: 6 / 10

Firm: 8 / 10

Ease of movement on a mattress is inversely related to its degree of contouring. Soft, close-conforming mattresses can sometimes feel restrictive, especially if you’re a combination sleeper who frequently changes positions.

While the medium soft mattress isn’t excessively plush, it does have a fairly close contour that may feel stifling for some sleepers. This wasn’t an issue for testers under 130 pounds since they don’t sink as much.

The medium firm and firm styles have a little more rebound, making movement easier. They’re also prone to greater motion transfer, so sleepers should consider their priorities when choosing a firmness level.

Off-Gassing

7 / 10

The ORB Performance Hybrid contains multiple types of foam, so you may notice some off-gassing odors when it’s new. The smell comes from volatile organic compounds (VOCs), a byproduct of foam manufacturing.

Off-Road Bedding uses CertiPUR-US certified foams, meaning independent testing shows they meet high standards for indoor VOC emissions. Odors should dissipate within 48 hours of unboxing the mattress.

ORB Performance Hybrid Mattress Review Breakdown

The ORB Performance Hybrid has a fabric cover and five distinct layers totaling 13 inches thick. Its Smart Fabric cover includes far infrared rays (FIR) technology. The thermally conductive material is engineered to convert body heat into energy. Proponents claim the process aids muscle recovery by increasing circulation.

A top 1.5-inch layer of Energex polyfoam is designed to alleviate pressure like memory foam while being springy like latex. Copper and gel infusions are intended to remove excess heat. Next is 2 inches of TitanFlex, a responsive polyfoam that evenly molds to the body. A 1-inch layer of transitional memory foam provides deeper cradling to ease tension. Similar to the top comfort layer, a gel-swirl infusion is added for its purported cooling benefits.

The 8-inch pocketed coil core adds bounce while stabilizing the comfort layers. Each fabric-encased coil moves on its own, so movement is less likely to transfer from one side to the other. Space between coils also boosts airflow throughout the support core. A base layer of high-density polyfoam reinforces the entire mattress to prevent premature sagging.

The mattress comes in Soft, Medium, and Firm models. We rate these as medium soft (4), medium firm (6), and firm (7) on our 10-point firmness scale.

Mattress Prices and Sizing

The ORB Performance Hybrid is priced on par with other luxury hybrids on the market today. A fairly complex design factors into its cost. While shoppers can find more economical hybrids, not every mattress has free shipping or such reliable all-around performance.

In addition to the six standard mattress sizes, the ORB Performance Hybrid comes in RV queen, RV king, and RV short king sizes. The 13-inch height is just a little taller than average, so sheets with deep pockets shouldn’t be needed. Depending on the size, the mattress weighs anywhere from 70 to 145 pounds.
