Novaform specializes in memory foam mattresses sold at affordable prices, and the ComfortGrande Mattress is one of their most popular models.

Standing at 14 inches tall, this all-foam mattress has a firmness level of medium firm (6). Its comfort system includes 3 inches of gel-infused memory foam to ensure great joint support, motion isolation, and overall comfort.

Our testing team wanted a closer look at this mattress, so we brought it into our Test Lab for an in-depth evaluation.

We review the Novaform ComfortGrande, including its construction, pricing, and performance ratings during our in-house testing.

Testing Team Takeaways

To test the Novaform Mattress, we had three people on our testing team each take the bed home with them for one week. Here are their initial observations.

Back sleeper

165 lbs.

Dunks head in ice water to wake up

As a back sleeper, I found that the ComfortGrande provided just enough back support, but it’s definitely not my ideal mattress. It’s a bit soft and has more contouring than I prefer, but it did help reduce pressure around my hips and lower back.

Side sleeper

Talks in sleep (like a lot)

The thick memory foam layer felt great for side sleeping. It sounds cliché, but the pressure in my hips and shoulders just melted away, letting me sleep comfortably through the night.

Side sleeper

Sleeps with a weighted blanket

For a memory foam mattress, I was pleasantly surprised by its temperature control. Like Colin, I appreciated the pressure relief for my hips and shoulders, but I think people with a higher body weight will probably find the ComfortGrande sinks too much.

Side Sleepers

We found that the Novaform ComfortGrande works well for side sleepers under 230 pounds with particularly good results for those who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds.

For side sleeping, it’s important to have dependable pressure relief around the hips and shoulders, and the ComfortGrande meets that need with its 3-inch layer of memory foam.

During our tests, side sleepers over 230 pounds felt that there was too much sinkage around their joints, which limited their ability to stay in a neutral spinal position.

Back Sleepers

Our testing showed the ComfortGrande is best for back sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds, although it offers adequate support to those who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds.

For back sleepers with a lighter body weight, the ComfortGrande nicely cushioned the natural curve in the lumbar zone. However, people with a higher weight found themselves sinking too deeply into the foam layers, which put their spines out of alignment.

Stomach Sleepers

None of the stomach sleepers in our testing gave high ratings to the Novaform ComfortGrande. In this sleeping position, it’s essential to have a flat and stable sleep surface, and the conforming memory foam can feel too plush. For stomach sleepers, this can cause the abdomen to sag into the foam and prevent them from sleeping with their body in an even plane.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

7.5 / 10

“Some other memory foam formulations provide better motion isolation, but the ComfortGrande absorbs enough vibration to make it a good pick for most couples.” – Danny

Our testing found that the ComfortGrande was able to limit vibrations from spreading across the mattress surface. Memory foam is known for its motion isolation, which is a result of the way the material contours to the body.

While you can feel some light vibrations when there’s movement on the other side of the bed, the motion isolation on this mattress is good enough for the vast majority of couples.

Pressure Relief

8 / 10

“The foam layers were great at cushioning my hips and shoulders without excessive contouring. The pressure relief may not be as good for back and stomach sleepers, though.” – Colin

Like most memory foam mattresses, the Novaform ComfortGrande offers high-level pressure relief.

The top layer of memory foam contours to the body to provide extra cushioning where it’s most needed. A second 3-inch layer of foam adds additional support and comfort.

Our testing found that pressure relief ratings were highest among side sleepers under 230 pounds who raved about how the mattress prevented impact around the hips and shoulders.

Temperature Control

7 / 10

“I wouldn’t say that this mattress sleeps cool, but it avoided major overheating, which is more than you usually expect from a memory foam model.” – Brad

Memory foam has a tendency to retain heat, but our team found that the ComfortGrande kept a relatively neutral temperature through the night.

The memory foam layer is infused with a gel material designed to combat heat buildup, and the other polyfoam layer in the comfort system has air channels to improve ventilation.

Overall, this mattress may be too warm for people who naturally run very hot, but it should be able to resist overheating for most other sleepers.

Edge Support

6.5 / 10

“As you might expect from an all-foam mattress with this design, the ComfortGrande can feel a bit iffy around the perimeter. I didn’t feel unstable per se, but there’s a lot of foam compression at the edge.” – Colin

Edge support is one of the weakest performance categories for the Novaform ComfortGrande. When you lie down or sit down on the perimeter, you can feel more sinkage than when you’re in the middle of the mattress.

Most of our testing team felt that the edges were weak but not unstable. However, some testers with a higher body weight said that there was enough foam compression to occasionally make the edges feel unstable.

Ease of Movement

6.5 / 10

“This memory foam bounces back a bit faster than the memory foam you find in some other mattresses, but at the end of the day, its conforming properties can still create resistance when you want to move on the bed.” – Brad

Our team rated ease of movement on the Novaform ComfortGrande as a bit below average. While people didn’t feel totally stuck in place or trapped in quicksand, they did at times feel like they were fighting against the mattress when they wanted to switch their body’s positioning.

The main reason for this resistance is the memory foam top layer. It cradles the body and is relatively slow to retake its shape, and this can hinder movement when you try to adjust your sleep posture.

Off-Gassing

6 / 10

“There are 14 inches of foam in this mattress, and they give off a pretty strong odor. Thankfully, though, the smell went away within a few days after I got some more ventilation in the room.” – Danny

After the Novaform Mattress is made, it is quickly compressed and sealed in plastic. The plastic holds in volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that get released when you remove the packaging. The VOCs aren’t a health risk, but they do have a noticeable odor that can last for a handful of days.

Novaform Mattress Review Breakdown

The Novaform ComfortGrande has a straightforward design. It is a memory foam mattress that is 14 inches tall and feels medium firm, or a 6 on the firmness scale of 1 to 10.

The cover is made with a quilted fabric that has a touch of softness and stretchiness. On the inside, there are three different layers.

The top layer is 3 inches of memory foam infused with a phase-change gel material engineered to maintain a balanced temperature. The memory foam layer cradles the body to minimize pressure buildup, especially around the joints.

The next layer is 3 inches of polyfoam that has a unique structure intended to create channels where air can flow through and help dissipate heat. This foam has less contouring, so it helps protect against excess sinkage.

The bottom layer is the support core, and it is made with 8 inches of high-density polyfoam. This helps give the mattress its tall profile while also providing a sturdy base.

Trial, Warranty, and Shipping Policies

Availability

Novaform exclusively sells the ComfortGrande through Costco. It can be purchased in Costco warehouses and on the Costco website.

Shipping is available to all 50 states, but Costco generally requires that you live within 50 miles of a warehouse to be eligible for shipping.

Shipping

When purchasing from Costco, shipping is free to the contiguous United States. Shipping to Alaska or Hawaii costs extra. Shipping may not be available if there is no Costco warehouse in your region.

The mattress gets compressed and sealed in plastic so that it can be delivered in a box to your front door. To set up the mattress, you have to take it out of the box, unroll it, and gently remove the plastic. The mattress will immediately begin to decompress, although it can take up to two days for it to reach its full size.

Additional Services

There are no White Glove installation services available from Novaform or Costco. In some areas, Costco may offer a service to haul away an old mattress.

Sleep Trial

When purchased from Costco, the ComfortGrande qualifies for Costco’s general return policy. Under this flexible policy, you can return the mattress for a full refund if you are not happy with it.

If you buy the mattress from a physical warehouse, you can return it to that Costco location. If you buy online through Costco’s website, you can coordinate your return with Costco’s online support team.

Warranty

All Novaform mattresses purchased through an authorized retailer come with a 20-year limited warranty.

Novaform will replace or repair any mattress with defective manufacturing or materials. The warranty does not cover typical wear and tear, such as natural softening of the foams over time.
