Our team at Sleep Foundation conducts extensive hands-on tests for each mattress to provide you with the most reliable, data-driven recommendations and reviews. Below are key guidelines that inform our testing methodology:
Our testers lie on the surface of each mattress to evaluate factors such as contouring and support. We also use specialized tools to measure performance criteria like pressure relief, heat retention, and motion isolation.
We test each mattress using various sleep positions to observe whether a mattress is better suited for side, back, or stomach sleeping. We roll around the surface and sit on the edges to gauge ease of movement and perimeter support.
We have tested hundreds of mattresses and bring years of experience in the mattress industry to the test lab. Our testing team covers a wide range of sleep preferences, sleep positions, and body types. This helps us represent as many sleeper types as possible in our reviews.

Japanese brand airweave produces a range of sleep products featuring airfiber, a proprietary interwoven resin fiber. The company started making mattress toppers in 2007 and has since expanded its line to include pillows, cushions, a dog bed, a duvet, and two mattress models. Airweave mattresses use proprietary designs, so they don’t fall into traditional classifications, like hybrid, latex, or memory foam.
To accommodate a wide range of sleepers, the New airweave Mattress Advanced Mattress uses the same airfiber technology as the brand’s flagship New airweave Mattress, but the core consists of three flippable blocks with a different firmness on each side. Airweave labels the firmness levels as 1, 2, and 3, where 1 is the softest and 3 is the firmest. Two blocks can be used as a level 1 or 2, and one block can be used as a level 2 or 3.
Airweave’s five suggested configurations include 1-2-1, 1-2-2, 1-3-2, 2-2-2, and 2-3-2. The 1-2-1 and 1-2-2 configurations equate to a medium (5) feel, the 1-3-2 has a medium firm (6) feel, the 2-2-2 is firm (7), and the 2-3-2 is firm (8).
We’ll explain this model’s unique construction, review how it performed in our in-house tests, and highlight which sleepers might benefit from each standard configuration option.

Airweave recommends five standard arrangements for the support core blocks. Each of these variations accommodates different types of sleepers.
Choose 1-2-1 if…
You sleep on your side or weigh less than 130 pounds. Sleepers looking to sink in more deeply benefit from this configuration’s softer feel, but their midsections still receive ample support to promote good posture. This variation’s stronger motion isolation may also appeal to couples.
Choose 1-2-2 if…
You sleep on your side, weigh over 130 pounds, and have broader shoulders. This configuration lets a side sleeper’s shoulder sink in a bit more than the rest of their body while providing extra support to their lower back and legs. The 1-2-2 option also isolates motion and relieves pressure better than some of the firmer variations.
Choose 1-3-2 if…
You experience back pain, especially if you sleep on your stomach and weigh 130 to 230 pounds. With especially firm support around the middle of the bed, a sleeper’s midsection does not sink in much, limiting spinal strain for many back and stomach sleepers.
Choose 2-2-2 if…
You’re a back or stomach sleeper who likes even, consistent support. This configuration provides uniform support, facilitating movement and allowing sleepers to use the full surface area.
Choose 2-3-2 if…
You’re a stomach sleeper over 130 pounds. With a sturdy support block in the center of the bed, most stomach sleepers of all weights don’t sink in deeply enough to put pressure on the lumbar region.

Side Sleepers
The softer configurations of the New airweave Mattress Advanced are appropriate for many side sleepers. Across weight groups, most side sleepers enjoy enough contouring on the 1-2-1 to relieve pressure around their hips and shoulders without sagging. Those over 130 pounds may also find the 1-2-2 comfortable, and those over 230 pounds often appreciate the extra midsection support of the 1-3-2. The 2-2-2 and the 2-3-2 are too firm for most side sleepers, which could contribute to discomfort in the hips and shoulders.
While the flippable core blocks vary in firmness, the airfiber material feels somewhat stiff across all versions. In addition, the comfort system consists of two polyester layers within the pillow-top that cushion the surface with minimal conforming. Side sleepers who value support are likely to enjoy the New airweave Mattress Advanced’s unique design and sturdy feel. However, those seeking a close-conforming hug may prefer a mattress with a more pliable core material.
Back Sleepers
Because back sleepers typically benefit from stable support with minimal to moderate contouring, several configurations of the New airweave Mattress Advanced are an excellent fit. The polyester comfort layers help cushion the lower back, while the airfiber core prevents the hips from sinking in deeply.
The 2-2-2 configuration satisfies most back sleepers thanks to its consistent, even support. The 2-3-2 also performs well for those over 130 pounds. Additionally, many back sleepers of all weights find the 1-3-2 acceptable, which might make it a good compromise for combination sleepers or those who share their bed with a partner. The 1-2-1 and the 1-2-2 offer enough support for most back sleepers under 230 pounds, though heavier individuals may experience lower back discomfort.
Stomach Sleepers
Support is key for stomach sleepers, so it’s no surprise that the firmer configurations of the New airweave Mattress Advanced performed better in our stomach sleeping tests. While the polyester comfort layers add a bit of plushness so the surface doesn’t feel hard, the stiff airfiber support blocks facilitate good posture.
The 2-2-2 is a good option for stomach sleepers of all weights. Because of its firmer center, the 1-3-2 also accommodates stomach sleepers of all weights, particularly those between 130 and 230 pounds. The 2-3-2 excels for those over 130 pounds, while the 1-2-1 and 1-2-2 configurations offer sufficient support for most stomach sleepers under 130 pounds.
Mattress Performance
In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.
Motion Isolation
5
/ 10
1-2-1: 4 / 10
1-2-2: 4 / 10
1-3-2: 2 / 10
2-2-2: 2 / 10
2-3-2: 2 / 10
The softer configurations of the New airweave Mattress Advanced absorb some movement, though sleepers who share their bed with a partner may notice occasional motion transfer.
Disturbances are more likely with the firmer options, as most sleepers will feel the bed move when their partner changes positions or gets up during the night.
Though airweave uses proprietary materials that can make it difficult to compare directly to other models, we did detect more vibrations traveling across the surface than we have for most innerspring, latex, hybrid, and foam beds.
Pressure Relief
6.5
/ 10
1-2-1: 6 / 10
1-2-2: 6 / 10
1-3-2: 4 / 10
2-2-2: 4 / 10
2-3-2: 4 / 10
The Advanced’s two softest configurations redistribute a sleeper’s weight to a greater extent, so sleepers can sink in more deeply. The firmer options offer a bit of contouring coupled with subtle cushioning from the two polyester comfort layers.
Sleepers with sharp pressure-induced aches may prefer a model that molds more closely to their bodies. However, many back and stomach sleepers benefit from the mattress’ more subtle conforming.
Temperature Control
8
/ 10
Thanks to its breathable construction, our testers found that the New airweave Mattress Advanced remains a relatively neutral temperature. Hot sleepers and those who live in warm climates may appreciate this model’s strong temperature regulation.
The polyester cover is designed for airflow so that heat can escape the interior components. Meanwhile, the proprietary airfiber material uses an interwoven design that lets air circulate freely, effectively cooling the surface of the mattress.
Edge Support
8
/ 10
1-2-1: 8 / 10
1-2-2: 8 / 10
1-3-2: 8 / 10
2-2-2: 10 / 10
2-3-2: 10 / 10
The New airweave Mattress Advanced’s modular core blocks are sturdy from edge to edge. Since the perimeter doesn’t compress much when weight is applied, most individuals can sit or sleep along the sides of the bed without noticeable instability.
While the two firmest configurations feel most secure along their perimeters, the softer options also have enough edge support for most sleepers.
Ease of Movement
8
/ 10
1-2-1: 8 / 10
1-2-2: 8 / 10
1-3-2: 8 / 10
2-2-2: 10 / 10
2-3-2: 10 / 10
Because of its supportive build, the New airweave Mattress Advanced was easy to move on for most of our testers. The pillow-top provides cushioning without closely hugging the sleeper’s body, and the airfiber core limits sinkage.
The three softer configurations have more give, so changing positions may not be quite as simple. However, most sleepers won’t struggle to move on any of the common configuration options.
Off-Gassing
8
/ 10
The New airweave Mattress Advanced has less pronounced off-gassing smells than most models because it does not ship compressed.
Many new mattresses have an initial odor caused by volatile organic compounds (VOCs) left over from manufacturing that become trapped when the mattress is compressed. Since the New airweave Mattress Advanced isn’t compressed, any lingering odors have some time to air out before the bed reaches your home. There may still be a slight smell when you first unpack the mattress, but it should dissipate within a couple of days.
New airweave Mattress Advanced Mattress Review Breakdown
The New airweave Mattress Advanced is an 11-inch thick model that uses an adjustable design, allowing sleepers to customize the firmness to medium (5), medium firm (6), firm (7), and firm (8).
A polyester outer cover encases the mattress, and a rayon and glass fiber inner cover protects the interior components. Underneath the cover, two layers of polyester cushioning add surface-level plushness. These layers are detachable for greater customizability.
The bulk of the mattress consists of the 7.8-inch airfiber support core. Airfiber consists of interwoven polyethylene fiber, making the mattress breathable and responsive. The core uses a modular design with three support blocks, each with two firmness options built in. Airweave labels the firmness levels as 1, 2, and 3, where 1 is the softest option. Two blocks contain a level 1 side and a level 2 side, while one block has a level 2 side and a level 3 side.
Sleepers can rearrange and flip these blocks to adjust the feel of the bed based on airweave’s five suggested configurations: 1-2-1, 1-2-2, 1-3-2, 2-2-2, or 2-3-2.
