Our team at Sleep Foundation conducts extensive hands-on tests for each mattress to provide you with the most reliable, data-driven recommendations and reviews. Below are key guidelines that inform our testing methodology:
Our testers lie on the surface of each mattress to evaluate factors such as contouring and support. We also use specialized tools to measure performance criteria like pressure relief, heat retention, and motion isolation.
We test each mattress using various sleep positions to observe whether a mattress is better suited for side, back, or stomach sleeping. We roll around the surface and sit on the edges to gauge ease of movement and perimeter support.
We have tested hundreds of mattresses and bring years of experience in the mattress industry to the test lab. Our testing team covers a wide range of sleep preferences, sleep positions, and body types. This helps us represent as many sleeper types as possible in our reviews.

Founded in 2011, Nest Bedding was one of the first companies to ship mattresses directly to consumers. Since then, it has expanded its product line to include bedding and furniture. The mattress line has also grown significantly, with the Nest Bedding Owl Mattress as one of the company’s more recent additions.
The Owl Mattress is a latex hybrid mattress that comes in three firmnesses: soft (3), medium (5), and firm (7). Additionally, the top comfort layer can be swapped out to change the firmness or refresh the feel. This model comes at a mid-range price-point compared to Nest’s other models. The design is unique, incorporating polyfoam, natural latex, and pocketed coils.
We’ll summarize how the Nest Bedding Owl Mattress performed in our tests, analyze its construction, and break down its pricing and sizing. We’ll also explain key company policies.
The Nest Bedding Owl Mattress comes in three firmness options to suit different sleep needs and preferences.
Choose Plush if… you’re a side sleeper who weighs under 130 pounds. The softer latex layer lets side sleepers in this weight group sink in more deeply for greater pressure relief. It also isolates motion better than the firmer versions.
Choose Medium if… you are a combination sleeper under 130 pounds. This option performs well across sleep positions for individuals in this weight group, but the medium (5) firmness is especially well-suited to back and side sleeping.
Choose Firm if… you sleep with a partner or are prone to overheating. The firm (7) performs well for virtually all sleep positions and weight groups, though side sleepers under 130 pounds may experience pressure points. Thanks to the mattress’ sturdy edge support, couples can use its full surface. The limited sinkage also reduces heat retention, keeping hot sleepers cooler.

Side Sleepers
Thanks to the cushioning of the pillow-top cover and the gentle contouring of the Talalay latex comfort layer, each firmness of the Owl Mattress accommodates some side sleepers.
The Medium is by far the most versatile option. It is best-suited to side sleepers under 130 pounds, although heavier individuals also enjoy a comfortable balance of cradling and support. The Plush is appropriate for side sleepers under 130 pounds. However, those who weigh more are likely to sink in deeply around their hips and shoulders, which may lead to spinal misalignment. Side sleepers over 230 pounds generally prefer the Firm, as do some between 130 and 230 pounds.
Back Sleepers
Back sleepers typically need moderate contouring and even support, which the Owl Mattress delivers. The Firm is the best option for most back sleepers. Those between 130 and 230 pounds enjoy ample support with enough contouring to promote good posture. Individuals under 130 pounds and over 230 pounds are also likely to find the mattress comfortable, though the balance might not be as ideal.
The Medium is better suited to back sleepers under 230 pounds, but especially those under 130 pounds. Because of the Plush’s soft (3) feel, most back sleepers sink in too deeply, jeopardizing their spinal alignment.
Stomach Sleepers
Stomach sleepers typically need consistent support that doesn’t let their midsections sink. The Firm version of the Owl Mattress can do this for stomach sleepers of all weights, thanks to its firm, highly supportive Talalay latex comfort layer. If the latex wears down over time, stomach sleepers can replace it to restore even support. This firmness level performs particularly well for stomach sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds.
Individuals under 130 pounds may find the Medium comfortable for stomach sleeping thanks to its added contouring combined with stable support. We don’t recommend the Plush for stomach sleepers since most are likely to sink in too deeply to maintain good sleep posture.
Mattress Performance
In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.
Motion Isolation
7
/ 10
Plush: 6 / 10
Medium: 4 / 10
Firm: 4 / 10
While the Plush version of the Owl offers moderate motion isolation, our tests showed that more vibrations travel across the Medium and Firm surfaces. This is largely due to the natural springiness of the Talalay latex comfort system. The bouncy coil core could also contribute slightly, though the coils are individually wrapped to limit most motion transfer.
Sleepers who awaken easily and share their bed with a partner may feel the movement of their partner on any version of the Owl Mattress. However, it’s more pronounced on the Medium and Firm options.
Pressure Relief
7.5
/ 10
Plush: 6 / 10
Medium: 4 / 10
Firm: 4 / 10
The Owl Mattress doesn’t offer the close contouring or deep hug common in hybrid models, so its pressure relief is more limited.
The Plush model’s softer latex layer allows a sleeper to sink in more deeply while redistributing their weight to limit pressure buildup.
The Medium and Firm options subtly contour to the sleeper’s shape, but pressure may still accumulate around heavier regions.
Temperature Control
8.5
/ 10
Plush: 6 / 10
Medium: 6 / 10
Firm: 8 / 10
The Owl’s temperature control varies depending on the firmness level. Because the Firm model does not conform closely to the sleeper’s body, it retains very little heat. The Medium and Plush options sleep a bit warmer because sleepers sink in more, but they should still be comfortable for most hot sleepers.
A number of temperature-regulating materials work in the Owl’s favor. The cover contains breathable cotton and moisture-wicking wool. The natural Talalay latex comfort system and the pocketed coil core also allow significant air circulation so that heat can dissipate.
Edge Support
8
/ 10
Plush: 4 / 10
Medium: 6 / 10
Firm: 8 / 10
While all three of the Owl Mattress’ firmness options have reinforced perimeters within their coil cores, the level of edge support varies significantly.
The Firm version has the sturdiest edge support because its Talalay latex comfort system does not compress as easily. Almost all sleepers should be able to use the full mattress surface and sit along the edge without feeling unstable.
Since the Medium model has moderate edge support, most sleepers can use the entire mattress, though some individuals over 230 pounds might find themselves gravitating towards the center of the bed to avoid the sensation that they might roll off.
Our testers found that the Plush option’s Talalay latex comfort system compresses significantly under pressure, so sitting or sleeping near the edge of the mattress may feel unsteady. This could make the sleep surface seem smaller to couples or complicate getting in and out of bed.
Ease of Movement
8.5
/ 10
Plush: 6 / 10
Medium: 8 / 10
Firm: 8 / 10
The Owl Mattress’ ease of movement is on par with other hybrid models. The Talalay latex comfort system regained its shape quickly as our testers moved around. Combined with the bounce of the coil core, the Owl Mattress has a responsive feel that’s generally easy to move on.
That said, the Plush version is slightly more motion-restricting because sleepers sink in more deeply. Since sleepers stay higher on the surface of the Medium and Firm options, changing positions should be easy for most individuals.
Off-Gassing
8.5
/ 10
Off-gassing occurs when a mattress emits volatile organic compounds (VOCs). VOCs are byproducts of manufacturing that often become trapped in a compressed mattress, releasing once the mattress is unpacked.
Because the Owl Mattress contains some synthetic foam, new owners may notice an initial off-gassing odor. This is to be expected and should dissipate almost entirely within a few days.

The Nest Bedding Owl is a pillow-top mattress with a hybrid design. This 12-inch thick model comes in soft (3), medium (5), and firm (7), which Nest refers to as Plush, Medium, and Firm, respectively. While it isn’t a fully organic mattress, it does use some natural components.
The cover contains a blend of cotton and wool for breathability. A 1.5-inch layer of polyfoam is quilted into the cover to cushion the sleep surface. Underneath that, the 3-inch natural Talalay latex comfort layer adds responsive contouring. The cover can be unzipped to access the comfort layer, allowing owners to rotate it for more even wear. This also enables sleepers to change the Talalay latex layer if it wears out or their firmness preferences change. Nest Bedding includes one comfort layer exchange for each Owl Mattress. Extra layers are also available for purchase.
Next, a 1-inch polyfoam transition layer helps redistribute the sleeper’s weight while acting as a barrier between the comfort layer and the core. The mattress core uses 6 inches of pocketed coils with a reinforced perimeter for notable bounce and consistent support across the entire mattress surface. Finally, another 1-inch polyfoam layer serves as a base for the coils to compress against.

The Nest Bedding Owl Mattress carries a premium price tag due to its materials and design. Latex tends to be one of the more expensive materials used in the mattress industry, and hybrid beds usually cost extra because of their complex construction techniques. The Owl also has a couple of unique features that increase the cost and add to the value, including a replaceable comfort layer and split firmness option for certain sizes.
Many sleepers replace their mattress when the comfort system wears out or their firmness preference changes. However, the Owl’s innovative design allows you to switch the comfort layer instead, which can save you money over time.
Additionally, the Owl is one of the few hybrid models on the market with the option of selecting a different firmness on each side of the bed for king and California king size mattresses. If you and your sleeping partner have different firmness preferences, the Owl may be worth the extra expense to avoid compromising.
