Testing Team Takeaways

To test the Nectar Ultra, we had three people on our testing team take the bed home and sleep on it for one week. Here are their initial observations.

“The Ultra has the signature memory foam ‘hug’ that I enjoyed, especially around my shoulders and hips. The memory foam provided just the right of pressure relief for side sleeping.”

“For a memory foam mattress, the edge support was better than I expected — I didn’t feel like I was going to slide off the edge. Plus, the cooling cover and phase-change material helped keep me from overheating, which has been an issue for me with other foam mattresses.”

“While I loved the contouring and pressure relief, I did find the mattress a little too soft for my liking. It cradled me well, but as a combination sleeper, I sometimes felt like I had to put in extra effort to switch positions.”

Side Sleepers

In our testing, the Nectar Ultra was a hit among side sleepers, thanks to the 4-inch layer of memory foam that contours the hips and shoulders, reducing impact and pressure points. The Nectar Ultra earned near-perfect ratings from side sleepers under 130 pounds and provided excellent support to those weighing between 130 and 230 pounds. Side sleepers over 230 pounds got decent support, but many felt that the medium (5) firmness allowed a bit too much sinkage.

Back Sleepers

We found that the Nectar Ultra offered solid support to back sleepers who weigh under 230 pounds. For most back sleepers in our testing, the mattress held the body in a neutral spinal position, while the memory foam’s gentle hug reduced pressure around the lumbar spine. That said, some back sleepers, particularly those over 230 pounds, felt that the mattress was too soft to provide optimal support.

Stomach Sleepers

Based on our testing, the Nectar Ultra delivers quality support to stomach sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds. Stomach sleepers typically need a mattress that is relatively firm so that their midsection doesn’t sink down and pull the body into a U-shape. The Nectar Ultra was able to promote healthy spinal alignment for stomach sleepers with a lighter body weight, but most people above 130 pounds found the mattress to be a touch too plush.

Performance Ratings

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

8.5 / 10

Nectar Ultra – Memory Foam: 9.5 / 10

Nectar Ultra – Hybrid: 8.5 / 10

“I was really impressed with how well the Nectar Ultra absorbed movement — whenever my partner shifted or got out of bed, I barely felt a thing. If you’re a light sleeper who shares a bed, this is definitely a solid option.” – Brad

In this category, the Nectar Ultra outpaces the vast majority of other mattresses on the market, thanks to its 4-inch layer of memory foam. We found that both Nectar Ultra models excelled at motion isolation, but the all-foam model was particularly impressive.

Pressure Relief

9 / 10

Nectar Ultra – Memory Foam: 9 / 10

Nectar Ultra – Hybrid: 9 / 10

“I felt cradled without sinking too deep. The thick memory foam layers really conformed to my body, providing the right amount of cushioning to prevent pressure points.” – Jeremy

Our testing team praised the Nectar Ultra for its ability to minimize pressure buildup, especially around the joints and other pain hot spots. Memory foam is widely recognized as one of the best materials for pressure relief, and the Nectar Ultra features 4 inches of high-end memory foam.

The design of the mattress allows it to conform to the body’s weight, ensuring that sharp pressure points get the cushioning that they need. As a result, the Nectar Ultra outperforms most other all-foam and hybrid mattresses in this category.

Temperature Control

7.5 / 10

Nectar Ultra – Memory Foam: 7 / 10

Nectar Ultra – Hybrid: 7.5 / 10

“The cooling cover and phase-change material helped minimize heat buildup, though I did notice a bit of warmth after a while. If you’re especially prone to overheating, the hybrid version might be a better choice, since the coils add extra airflow.” – Mary

During our tests, the Nectar Ultra was rated as roughly average for temperature control. It did a better job of resisting heat buildup than most other mattresses made with memory foam, thanks to the cooling fibers in the cover and a phase-change material, which help dissipate heat. We found that the hybrid model sleeps slightly cooler thanks to airflow that moves through the coils for extra ventilation.

Edge Support

8 / 10

Nectar Ultra – Memory Foam: 7.5 / 10

Nectar Ultra – Hybrid: 8 / 10

“I was surprised by how well the Nectar Ultra held up around the edges—there was some compression when sitting, but I never felt like I was going to roll off. The hybrid version felt a bit more stable thanks to the reinforced coils, while the all-foam model had a softer perimeter.” – Colin

Our team was pleasantly surprised by the edge support of the Nectar Ultra. Although our testers could feel the foam compress when sitting or sleeping near the perimeter, they didn’t feel unstable. The hybrid model has reinforced coils around the outside, which gives it a touch more edge support than the all-foam model. Overall, the Nectar Ultra doesn’t have the firmest perimeter, but the edge support is sufficient for using the entire surface of the mattress.

Ease of Movement

7 / 10

Nectar Ultra – Memory Foam: 6.5 / 10

Nectar Ultra – Hybrid: 7 / 10

“I loved how the Nectar Ultra hugged my body, but I did notice it took a little extra effort to switch positions. The hybrid model felt a bit easier to move on, so if you prefer more responsiveness, that might be the better option.” – Mary

One drawback of memory foam is that it can make it harder to move on the mattress because of the way that memory foam cradles the body. Some of our testers felt that they had to push against the hug of the memory foam in order to change their sleeping position. The hybrid model scored slightly higher in this category during our testing, offering light bounce from the coils. We also found that problems with ease of movement were more common among sleepers over 230 pounds.

Off-Gassing

7.5 / 10

Nectar Ultra – Memory Foam: 7 / 10

Nectar Ultra – Hybrid: 7.5 / 10

“There was a slight ‘new mattress smell’ when I first unboxed the Ultra, but that’s pretty typical. It wasn’t overpowering, and after a couple of days with a fan on and a window open, the odor faded. If you’re sensitive to smells, just give it some time to air out before sleeping on it.” – Colin

This slight odor comes from the thick foam layers, which emit tiny particles called volatile organic compounds (VOCs) created during the manufacturing process. This is known as off-gassing. It doesn’t pose any health risks, but the smell may be annoying or off-putting until it fades. If you can open a window or turn on a fan, the smell should dissipate more quickly.

Nectar Ultra Mattress Review Breakdown

The Nectar Ultra Mattress comes in two versions. One is made entirely of foam, and the other is a hybrid mattress featuring a support core of pocketed coils. Both are 15 inches tall and have a firmness level of medium, or about a 5 on our firmness scale of 1 to 10.

The cover of the Nectar Ultra is made with a polyester blend that feels soft and smooth and is made with specialty fibers designed to feel cool to the touch. The bottom of the mattress has a textured finish to keep the mattress from moving on your bed frame.

The comfort system is the same in the all-foam and hybrid versions of the Nectar Ultra. The top layer is made with 4 inches of memory foam. This material hugs the body, cradling the joints to minimize pressure buildup. The top part of the foam includes a phase-change material that’s engineered to reduce heat retention.

The second layer is made with 3 inches of polyfoam. This material does not have the same degree of contouring as memory foam, but it’s formulated to have more pushback in certain areas that support more of the body’s weight.

In the all-foam model, the support core is made with 8 inches of dense polyfoam. This thick layer limits sinkage and contributes to stronger edges and overall sturdiness.

In the hybrid, the support core includes an 8-inch layer of pocketed coils on top of a 1-inch layer of polyfoam. Pocketed coils are constructed to allow each spring to move independently, allowing for more tailored support and reduced motion transfer. The coils are also reinforced around the perimeter to increase edge support. The polyfoam base absorbs excess vibration and noise.

Availability

The Nectar Ultra Mattress is available for purchase directly from the Nectar website. It’s also sold on Amazon and in thousands of Nectar’s brick-and-mortar retail partners in the U.S.

Shipping

Nectar provides free shipping for the Ultra Mattress to the contiguous United States. For an extra charge, they will ship the mattress to Alaska and Hawaii.

The mattress typically ships within one to two business days and is delivered to your front door several days after that. The mattress is rolled, compressed, and tightly sealed in plastic so that it can be shipped in a cardboard box.

To set up the mattress, you will need to bring the box to your bedroom, remove the sealed mattress, and place it on your preferred bed frame. Then, after carefully cutting away the plastic packaging, the mattress will start to expand. You can sleep on the mattress right away, but it may not reach its full size for up to 72 hours.

Additional Services

White Glove delivery, which includes setup of the Nectar Ultra and removal of your old mattress, is available for an additional charge. If you select this option, you will be contacted by a service provider to schedule a delivery date. It usually takes a few days longer to receive your mattress if you request White Glove delivery.

White Glove delivery may not be offered in all areas. Confirm availability and pricing during checkout.

Nectar offers a 365-night sleep trial for the Ultra Mattress. The company asks that you try the mattress for a 30-night adjustment period before deciding whether you want to keep it. If you choose to return the mattress, Nectar will arrange for it to be picked up and issue a full refund.

Warranty

The Nectar Ultra Mattress comes with a lifetime limited warranty that covers defects in materials and manufacturing. It does not cover damage from negligence, accidents, or normal wear and tear.

For the first 10 years that you own the mattress, Nectar will replace a mattress at no charge if it is confirmed to be defective. Starting in year 11, the company will repair or replace a mattress that is found to be defective, but you may be required to pay some shipping costs.
