A family-run business, My Green Mattress was founded with the goal of creating a mattress produced without chemicals that could be harmful to people or the environment. Today, the company offers four mattresses built with certified organic materials and free of chemical adhesives.

The Natural Escape is an 11-inch hybrid option, and it is complemented in the My Green Mattress product line by three other beds:

  • The Hope Latex mattress is 8 inches tall and has all of its interior layers made with natural, organic latex.
  • The Kiwi is a hybrid offered in two models, one of which is reversible, allowing you to sleep on either side. This mattress is especially popular for children and teenagers, and a specific version is available for bunk beds.
  • The Pure Echo mattress is an innerspring model that is nearly 10 inches tall and is the firmest of the My Green Mattress products.

The Natural Escape, which combines a thick latex layer, an innerspring support core, and layers of organic wool and cotton, is the company’s luxury mattress, although it’s available at a competitive price point. It has considerable bounce, making it easy to move on the bed, and lightly hugs the body for pressure relief. Its hybrid design contributes to excellent temperature regulation and edge support as well.

With its environmentally friendly design, robust hybrid features, and accessible price, the Natural Escape from My Green Mattress is a compelling option for shoppers who value organic products.

All My Green Mattress products are certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and/or the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS).

Mattress needs vary from person to person, and two factors that play a big part in finding the right mattress match are an individual’s sleeping position and body weight.

Side Sleepers

People who sleep on their sides are inclined to prefer a mattress that falls in the range of medium soft (4) to medium firm (6) with moderate to significant conforming. The reason for this is based mostly on anatomy. The widest parts of the body, the shoulders and hips, are prone to press sharply against a mattress when sleeping on your side. If a bed is too firm, it will create an uncomfortable impact in those pressure points, but if it’s too soft, those areas will sag into the bed and out of line with the neck and spine.

With its medium firm feel, the Natural Escape works well for most side sleepers and is best suited to those between 130 and 230 pounds. Some side sleepers over 230 pounds may find it to be a bit too soft, and some under 130 pounds will find it to be too hard. Those who want a softer feel may opt for the My Green Mattress plush mattress topper.

Back Sleepers

For people who sleep on their backs, a mattress typically needs a firmer feel that is between medium (5) and firm (7). The lower back is the main problem area for people in this sleeping position. Most people carry more weight around the abdomen, and a mattress that is too soft will allow the midsection to sag into a U-shape that strains the spine. However, a mattress that is too firm won’t accommodate the slight natural curve in the lumbar spine and can lead to an achy night’s sleep.

The Natural Escape strikes a great balance for most back sleepers with just enough cushioning and firmness. Some back sleepers over 230 pounds, though, may find it to be a little too soft.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleeping is the least common position, and without the right type of mattress, it can be fraught with discomfort. The optimal firmness for people in this position tends to be medium firm (6) to firm (8) and with lighter conforming to avoid feeling stuck face-down in the bed. A firmer feel keeps the stomach from pushing deeply into the bed and putting torque on the lower back. For this reason, the Natural Escape, which has thicker coils under the lumbar area, is a viable option for many stomach sleepers, although it is the best fit for those who weigh under 130 pounds.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

6 / 10

The Natural Escape mattress provides average motion isolation. Even though latex can inhibit some motion transfer, the modest level of hug combined with the bed’s bounciness makes it more likely that you’ll notice when your bed partner moves around or gets in or out of bed.

For most couples, though, this motion transfer isn’t enough to cause problems. It’s mainly an issue if one bed partner is easily awoken during the night.

Pressure Relief

7 / 10

The Natural Escape ranks as slightly above-average in this category, although the perception of pressure relief will depend a great deal on the individual sleeper.

People who want more modest cushioning of pressure points love the way that the latex cradles their joints without causing them to sink deeply into the bed. On the flip side, sleepers who like deep contouring can find the Natural Escape to feel a bit too rigid and lacking in its ability to accommodate their pressure points.

Temperature Control

8 / 10

Temperature control is well above-average on the Natural Escape mattress. All of the materials used in the mattress either promote breathability or are less prone to heat retention than most other mattress materials (such as memory foam).

The cotton in the cover and the wool in the comfort system are both naturally moisture-wicking, which means they pull sweat away from the body so that it can evaporate and help your body cool itself down. Latex does not collect much heat, and the tall layer of coils enables significant airflow to keep warmth from building up in the mattress overnight.

Taken together, these components make the Natural Escape a great choice for hot sleepers.

Edge Support

7 / 10

Above-average edge support helps make the Natural Escape an appealing mattress for people who like to sleep or sit near the edge of their bed.

The bed’s dependable edge support starts in the innerspring layer where a thicker wire is used for the coils that go around the perimeter. Dunlop latex does not compress as deeply as materials like memory foam, which also helps retain a sense of stability around the edge. The hand-tufted construction holds the materials securely in place, keeping them from bunching in the middle or near the perimeter.

Ease of Movement

8 / 10

Ease of movement is a standout feature of this mattress.

Latex is widely known to have a springy feel because of how rapidly it retakes its full shape once weight is removed from it. The way that the coils compress and rebound further enhances the ease of movement, including around the edge of the mattress. The soft, inviting feel of the wool and cotton reduces friction when adjusting sleeping positions.

All of these elements work to make the Natural Escape a top pick for combination sleepers and others who want to smoothly move around in bed.

Off-Gassing

8 / 10

A major selling point of the Natural Escape is that it is made without chemicals that are normally found as part of the foams or adhesives used in other mattresses. This reduction in chemicals means very few smelly volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are released when you unpack the Natural Escape. While you may notice a light “new mattress smell” that some customers describe as earthy, the smell shouldn’t last more than a few hours and is generally subtle and not bothersome.

My Green Mattress Natural Escape Mattress Review Breakdown

The Natural Escape mattress from My Green Mattress is a hybrid that has three internal layers and has a total height of 11 inches. Each mattress is made-to-order in the company’s factory in Illinois. Button-tufting is used to prevent bunching and hold the layers together without the need for chemical adhesives.

The top two layers combine to form the comfort system. The first of those layers is wool that has been certified to meet the standards of the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). For a material to receive GOTS certification, it must meet demanding standards in its production from start-to-finish. In addition to being organic, this wool layer contributes light softness, breathability, and natural temperature regulation.

The next part of the comfort system is a three-inch layer of natural latex that is certified organic by the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS), a similar program as GOTS but for latex materials. The latex in this layer is made using the Dunlop process and has above-average density, making it noticeably bouncy with light contouring.

The support core is eight inches of pocketed innerspring coils. The coils are thicker around the perimeter to boost edge support, and two thicknesses are used in the interior to provide zones that best accommodate the heavier parts of the body.

The cover of the Natural Escape is made of GOTS-certified organic cotton that gives the mattress exterior a smooth feel and additional moisture-wicking to go along with that provided by the wool.

The comfort feel is medium firm (6), and because latex does not compress as much as most foams, some customers may perceive this mattress to be firmer. My Green Mattress also offers a two-inch plush latex mattress topper for people who want a chemical-free bed with a softer feel.

Warranty

My Green Mattress backs the Natural Escape with a 20-year warranty that provides coverage for defects in materials and manufacturing. During the first 10 years, the company will repair or replace a mattress with a defect at no cost. In year 11, the company will replace the mattress at a discount of 50% of the current retail price, and that discount decreases by 5% per year until the warranty expires in year 20. The customer is required to pay warranty-related transportation costs and to provide proof of the donation or disposal of the defective mattress.
