Testing Team Takeaways

To test the My Green Mattress Kiwi Organic Mattress, we had three people on our testing team each take the bed home with them for one week. Here are their initial observations.

Jackson Lindeke

Side sleeper

Showers before bed

The Kiwi Organic doesn’t have the deepest contouring, but the latex comfort layer nicely cushioned my joints, including my hips and shoulders. It also kept a cool temperature throughout the night.

Back sleeper

Dunks head in ice water to wake up

While I normally love the feel of latex hybrids for back sleeping, the Kiwi Organic is a little too plush for my taste. I still got adequate support, but I think most stomach and back sleepers would prefer something firmer.

I agree with Jackson about support for side sleeping and temperature regulation. Those are both strengths of this mattress. But couples should be aware that the bounciness of the materials can cause motion to spread from one side of the bed to the other.

Side Sleepers

Evaluation in our Test Lab showed that the Kiwi Organic Mattress is best suited for side sleepers under 230 pounds, and it got the highest support scores from people who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds.

For these sleepers, the Kiwi Organic was able to limit pressure buildup around the shoulders and hips. This helped hold those joints in line with the rest of the body, promoting pain-free spinal alignment.

Side sleepers over 230 pounds felt that the mattress lacked firmness and could have benefitted from a thicker latex comfort layer. Some sleepers under 130 pounds said they would have preferred a slightly plusher or more contouring surface.

Back Sleepers

During our tests, back sleepers who weigh under 130 pounds gave the Kiwi Organic solid ratings for overall support. Those between 130 and 230 pounds said it provided sufficient but not outstanding support.

These back sleepers found that the latex layer gently cushioned the lumbar area, but they had concerns about the medium (5) firmness level. This is less firm than most back sleepers prefer because it can permit excess compression of the comfort layers, leading to the midsection sinking out of line with the rest of the body.

Back sleepers over 230 pounds were more definitive in saying that this mattress was too soft to deliver enough support.

Stomach Sleepers

None of the stomach sleepers in our testing said that the Kiwi Organic was their ideal type of mattress. Stomach sleepers typically need a mattress that is firmer than the Kiwi Organic in order to keep their stomach from sagging into the top layers, which can pull the spine into a U-shape.

Among the stomach sleepers in our testing, the highest scores came from those under 130 pounds who said the Kiwi Organic offered just adequate support.

Mattress Performance

Motion Isolation

6 / 10

“While coils and latex are high-performance materials, motion transfer is their main drawback. When testing this mattress, it was really easy to feel vibrations when there was movement on the other half of the bed.” – Jackson

Our motion isolation testing found subpar results for the Kiwi Organic Mattress. In large part, this was to be expected given its construction with latex and innerspring coils.

These bouncy materials allow vibrations to reverberate across the mattress surface. In practice, this means that you notice when a bed partner moves on the mattress or gets into or out of bed. Although most people aren’t bothered by some motion transfer, it can be disruptive to anyone who wakes up easily.

Pressure Relief

7 / 10

“For me as a back sleeper, the Kiwi Organic was too soft to provide optimal pressure relief. It’s better at supporting sleepers who want more mid-range firmness and moderate contouring.” – Danny

The Kiwi Organic delivers pressure relief that is roughly average. It has enough cushioning to prevent painful impact with the mattress surface, but it doesn’t mold to the body in the way that some mattresses can.

Based on our testing, the Kiwi Organic offers the best pressure relief to side sleepers under 230 pounds and back sleepers under 130 pounds. It’s less supportive for people over 230 pounds and anyone who wants a mattress with deep contouring.

Temperature Control

8 / 10

“I could rest easy on the Kiwi Organic without waking up in a sweat. Breathable and heat-resisting materials make it a solid pick for hot sleepers.” – Jeremy

We found that the Kiwi Organic provides standout temperature control, especially for a mattress that has a medium (5) firmness level.

Our testing team could sleep on this mattress with virtually no heat buildup. Each layer in the mattress design plays a role in this temperature control.

Cotton and wool are breathable and moisture-wicking. Latex is naturally resistant to heat retention. And the coils have plenty of room for ventilation so that heat can flow out of the mattress.

Edge Support

7.5 / 10

“You can feel the latex compress lightly when you are near the edge of the bed, but the perimeter still feels stable. I didn’t have any issues using the full mattress surface.” – Jackson

Above-average edge support provides a degree of stability across the entire surface of the Kiwi Organic.

The sturdy coils are reinforced around the perimeter, which protects against deep sinkage. The responsiveness of latex also helps prevent any sense that you are going to accidentally roll out of bed.

Ease of Movement

8 / 10

“The springy feel of the Kiwi Organic makes it a great choice for combination sleepers. I found it really easy to modify my body’s position on this mattress.” – Danny

People on our testing team who switch between different sleeping positions praised the ease of movement on the Kiwi Organic.

The buoyant latex and bouncy coils facilitate smooth and resistance-free movement on the mattress surface. This makes the Kiwi Organic appealing to anyone who changes positions to get comfortable.

Off-Gassing

8 / 10

“Thanks to its natural materials, I didn’t notice anything more than a very light and temporary smell from the latex.” – Jeremy

We didn’t experience any off-gassing from the Kiwi Organic. Its construction has no foam, which is the material that causes most off-gassing. On top of that, the natural and organic materials are produced without the chemicals that can create bothersome odors.

We did detect a very faint “new mattress smell,” but it faded away within a day after unboxing the mattress.

My Green Mattress Kiwi Organic Mattress Review Breakdown

The My Green Mattress Kiwi Organic Mattress is a 10-inch hybrid that has a firmness level of medium (5). Its construction features a number of organic and high-quality materials.

The mattress cover is made with breathable organic cotton that is certified by the well-regarded Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) organization. Quilted into this cover is 1 inch of organic wool that also has GOTS certification.

The next layer is 2 inches of organic latex that is certified by the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS). The latex has a responsive feel and helps combat heat buildup.

The support core is made of an 8-inch layer of pocketed coils that provide a base for the mattress while also contributing significant bounce. Firmer coils around the perimeter help reinforce the edges, expanding the usable surface area of the mattress.

To avoid the use of chemical adhesives, a series of hand-crafted button tufts hold the layers together. The Kiwi Organic Mattress holds MADE SAFE and GREENGUARD Gold certifications, verifying it meets certain environmental and health-based standards.
