Founded in 2018, Molecule is a mattress brand that focuses on sleepers living an active lifestyle. Molecule’s mattress designs aimed to meet the needs of athletes looking to improve their recovery and performance.

In 2021, the company introduced its newest line of mattresses, the Molecule Copperwell Collection. The Molecule Copperwell line is available exclusively through the online retailer Mattress Firm. The name comes from the company’s blend of copper-infused memory foam incorporated into the Copperwell’s comfort system.

The Molecule Copperwell Collection features two models. The Molecule Copperwell Memory Foam Mattress is a 12-inch bed with all-foam construction. The Molecule Copperwell Hybrid Mattress comes at a higher price-point and offers a thicker, foam-based comfort system and a pocketed coil support core.

If you’d like to know how the Molecule Copperwell Collection performs, we’ll evaluate each mattress model in terms of price, key performance metrics, comfort for different types of sleepers, and customer service policies.

The Molecule Copperwell Mattress line consists of two distinct models, an all-foam version and a hybrid version, with several important differences. Read on to learn which is the best mattress for you.

Side Sleepers

The features of the Molecule Copperwell Mattress are exceptionally well-suited to the needs of side sleepers. Side sleeping tends to concentrate all of your body weight onto one side of your hips and shoulders. Without proper cushioning in your mattress, you may develop painful pressure points and spend the night tossing and turning. As a result, side sleepers typically sleep best on a mattress like the Molecule Copperwell with medium firmness and above average contouring.

Both the Molecule Copperwell Memory Foam and Hybrid models contain a comfort layer made of contouring memory foam and a secondary layer of zoned foam. The combination offers ample contouring to cushion the hips and shoulders of side sleepers while targeting support where it’s needed most. And at a medium firmness level, the Molecule Copperwell Mattress provides a comfortable sleep surface for side sleepers regardless of bodyweight.

Back Sleepers

The design of the Molecule Copperwell Collection is also well-suited to the needs of back sleepers. Sleeping on your back places more pressure on your lower back or lumbar region. To prevent lower back pain, back sleepers usually prefer a mattress with a balance between support and cushioning for the lumbar area.

For the most part, the Molecule Copperwell Mattress strikes a good balance and provides a comfortable sleep surface for back sleepers. The memory foam comfort layer featured in both the Molecule Copperwell Memory Foam and Hybrid Mattresses offers ample contouring to cushion the back. A higher density and zoned polyfoam layer also prevents the lower back from sinking too deeply into the surface of the mattress.

Most sleepers who weigh under 130 pounds and up to 230 pounds found both the Molecule Copperwell Memory Foam and Hybrid Mattress comfortable. However, sleepers who weigh above 230 pounds may find that the thicker comfort system of the Molecule Copperwell Hybrid provides better support. The best mattresses for heavy sleepers tend to be firm and supportive.

Stomach Sleepers

Some stomach sleepers may find the Molecule Copperwell lacking in support, but overall the mattress performs fairly well for this category of sleeper. When sleeping on your stomach, your mattress must provide enough support to prevent your midsection from sinking into the sleep surface and disrupting spinal alignment. However, stomach sleepers still require a moderate amount of contouring to cushion the hips.

The memory foam design and medium firmness of the Molecule Copperwell series isn’t ideally suited to stomach sleepers who often prefer a firm sleep surface with only moderate contouring. However, the bed manages to provide enough support and a good level of pressure relief for sleepers under 130 pounds up to 230 pounds. Stomach sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds are likely to appreciate a mattress with more support than the Molecule Copperwell Collection provides.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

9 / 10

Memory Foam: 10 / 10

Hybrid: 8 / 10

The Molecule Copperwell features a foam based comfort system with a top layer of highly contouring memory foam. Memory foam typically provides excellent motion isolation. Motion isolation refers to how well a mattress prevents movement from transferring across its surface. This is an important metric for couples sharing a bed.

The Molecule Copperwell Memory Foam Mattress dampens nearly all movement. Keep in mind that the Molecule Copperwell Memory Foam model received higher marks in this category due to its all-foam construction. The Molecule Copperwell Hybrid offers very good motion isolation, but the slight bounce of the pocketed coil support core doesn’t isolate motion quite as well as the all-foam version.

Pressure Relief

8 / 10

The two beds in the Molecule Copperwell Mattress Collection feature an uppermost layer of memory foam. Memory foam is well-known for its ability to mold to the shape of your body and relieve potentially painful pressure points. The Molecule Copperwell’s comfort system is no exception. The Molecule Copperwell Memory Foam and Hybrid Mattress each offer substantial body-hugging and very good pressure relief.

Temperature Control

6.5 / 10

Memory Foam: 6 / 10

Hybrid: 8 / 10

The Molecule Copperwell incorporates several design features to counteract the poor temperature control of traditional memory foam. Temperature control measures how well a mattress prevents heat build up as you sleep.

Memory foam which is highly contouring has a tendency to reduce air circulation and absorb body heat. However, the memory foam comfort layer of both the Molecule Copperwell Memory Foam and Hybrid Mattresses contain a copper and gel infusion designed to quickly dissipate body heat and keep your sleep surface cool. As a result, the Molecule Copperwell Memory Foam Mattress provides good temperature regulation for an all-foam mattress, but the Molecule Copperwell Hybrid scores slightly higher in this category.

Edge Support

6.5 / 10

Edge support refers to how well a bed can support your bodyweight at its perimeter. Strong edge support makes it easier to sit at the edge of your bed and also increases the usable surface area of your mattress, an important consideration for couples sharing a mattress.

Both models of the Molecule Copperwell Collection feature top layers of memory foam. The foam comfort layer does tend to cause some sagging when sitting on the edge of both the Molecule Copperwell Memory Foam and Hybrid. Neither bed performs as well as mattresses with firmer materials or a reinforced perimeter. However, each bed contains a sturdy support core that offers relatively good edge support.

Ease of Movement

6.5 / 10

Mattresses that are bouncier and more responsive make for easier movement on the sleep surface. Ease of movement may not be a high priority for all sleepers. However, those with reduced mobility may want a bed that makes it easier to change sleep positions and get in and out of.

The Molecule Copperwell Mattresses provides a good balance between ease of movement and motion isolation. While the contouring, foam-based comfort layers aren’t particularly bouncy, they provide enough resilience for good ease of movement.

Off-Gassing

6.5 / 10

Each model of the Molecule Copperwell Mattress Collection contains substantial foam layers and are prone to moderate off-gassing. The mattress manufacturing process creates byproducts known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs). While VOCs aren’t harmful, they cause a noticeable odor.

Off-gassing odor generally occurs when you unpackage and decompress a new foam-based mattress for the first time. The Molecule Copperwell Memory Foam and Hybrid Mattress each give off an odor after unpacking, but the smell dissipates within a few hours.

Molecule Copperwell Mattress Review Breakdown

The Molecule Copperwell Mattress line contains two mattresses, the Molecule Copperwell Memory Foam Mattress and the Molecule Copperwell Hybrid Mattress. Both models offer a medium (5) feel on the 1-10 firmness scale. However, each model differs in its construction and materials.

The Molecule Copperwell Memory Foam Mattress is a 12-inch, all-foam bed. The comfort layer is composed of 2 inches of copper and gel infused memory foam and an additional 2 inches of polyfoam. The uppermost layer of memory foam is what gives this bed its unique feel. The memory foam layer provides ample contouring and pressure relief while the copper and gel infused formulation is intended to keep the sleep surface relatively cool.

The second polyfoam layer is zoned to provide additional support and cushioning in key areas like the hips and shoulders. An 8-inch layer of dense polyfoam acts as the support core to create a stable, durable foundation to the mattress. The Molecule Copperwell Memory Foam Mattress also features a quilted top cover with an antimicrobial treatment.

The Molecule Copperwell Hybrid Mattress is a 13-inch bed with a memory foam and polyfoam comfort system atop a pocketed coil support core. The Copperwell Hybrid’s comfort system consists of 1.5 inches of copper and gel infused memory foam, 1.5 inches of open-cell memory foam, and 2 inches of zoned polyfoam. The result is a sleep surface that’s designed to hug the curves of your body while staying cool and providing ample support.

The Copperwell Hybrid’s support core consists of 6 inches of foam-encased metal coils and a final 1-inch base layer of polyfoam. The coils give this bed a slight resilient bounce and durability. The Molecule Copperwell Hybrid Mattress also features a quilted, antimicrobial top cover.

Mattress Prices and Sizing

Mattress prices can vary widely depending on their quality and construction, however, the average mattress price for a mid-range queen mattress is approximately $1,000. This places the Molecule Copperwell Memory Foam and Hybrid Mattress above the average price for a typical mattress.

Mattress materials can have a significant impact on price. Hybrid mattresses feature complex construction and more durable materials, making this style of bed more expensive. The Molecule Copperwell Hybrid Mattress is only slightly above average when compared to other hybrid mattresses.

The Molecule Copperwell Memory Foam Mattress is also above average for a typical all-foam mattress, but the price reflects the high quality of the memory foam and polyfoam formulations used in the bed’s construction. Both models are available in all six standard mattress sizes from twin to California king.
