Based in Michigan, Joybed specializes in producing affordable luxury sleep products using natural materials. Its product line includes pillows, sheets, mattress toppers, foundations, and more. There are also four mattress models: the Joybed LX, the Joybed LXC Medium-Firm (which is also available bundled with a topper that makes it Medium-Plush), the Joybed LXP Medium-Firm and the Joybed LXP Medium-Plush. All three models are hybrids made with natural materials. The Joybed LX is the company’s original flagship model, the Joybed LXC Medium-Plush is a vegan option, and the Joybed LXP is a premium model with two firmness options.

The Joybed LX is the company’s most affordable mattress option. At 10 inches thick, it has a lower profile than the other mattress models in the line. It has a firm feel, rating between a 7 and 8 on the firmness scale, which makes it Joybed’s firmest option.

This review will take a look at the Joybed LX. We’ll describe the mattress’s construction, detail its pricing, and assess its performance. Finally, we’ll summarize highlights from customer reviews and include information on company policies to help you decide if it’s right for you.

The Joybed LX Mattress uses a hybrid design with natural materials in its comfort layer and pocketed coils in its support core.

A breathable GOTS-certified organic cotton cover wraps around the mattress, helping to keep the bed’s surface cool. The bed avoids the use of chemical flame retardants with a plant-based fire barrier. Next, the mattress uses a layer of cotton, a layer of wool, and another layer of cotton. The cotton adds some softness and breathability, while the wool helps wick away heat and moisture.

Individually encased coils make up the Joybed LX Mattress’s support core. Each coil can move separately to help isolate motion and contour to the shape of the sleeper’s body. A double column of coils around the perimeter of the bed gives extra edge support.

The Joybed LX falls between a 7 and an 8 on the 10-point firmness scale, which means it has a firm feel. This is firmer than the average range most individuals prefer, so it’s most appropriate for individuals looking for a firm, stable sleep surface.

Side Sleepers

The comfort system of the Joybed LX is built more for cushioning rather than contouring, which could lead to some pressure buildup for side sleepers. While the cotton and wool comfort system softens the surface of the bed, it does not redistribute the sleeper’s weight like latex or foam. Since a side sleeper’s hips and shoulders tend to put more force on the mattress, pressure could build up in these areas.

Side sleepers who weigh under 130 pounds may be particularly likely to experience pressure points because of the mattress’s firm feel. These sleepers may get more cushioning from the Joybed LXP Medium-Plush model instead. People who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds will probably find the Joybed LX more comfortable for side sleeping since the coil core will adjust more to their shape.

Side sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds will find the bed’s firm feel comfortable, but may also experience pressure points when sleeping on their sides since they may sink in against the firm coil core.

Back Sleepers

Since back sleepers usually prefer a firmer mattress than side sleepers, making the Joybed LX a good match. One of the most common problems associated with back sleeping is sagging around the hips, which puts pressure on the lumbar region. The Joybed LX’s firm feel limits sinkage, thereby supporting a back sleeper’s spinal alignment. The cotton and wool in the comfort system provide a bit of cushioning, but not too much.

Regardless of an individual’s weight, the Joybed LX should be supportive enough for most back sleepers and give them the even plane they need to keep their spines aligned.

Stomach Sleepers

When sleeping on their stomachs, the weight around an individual’s hips and belly may pull their midsection too deeply into the mattress and put a strain on their spine. Because of this, stomach sleepers usually need a firmer mattress for extra support.

Thanks to its firm feel and sturdy coil core, the Joybed LX should not allow a stomach sleeper’s midsection to dip too far into the bed. Cushioning from the cotton and wool comfort layers is light, so stomach sleepers won’t feel enveloped by the bed.

Stomach sleepers under 130 pounds should get the support they need, but the Joybed LX may feel a little firmer than ideal. Those who weigh more than 130 pounds will likely get the best balance of support and softness out of this bed.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

6 / 10

Like many hybrid models, the Joybed LX isolates a moderate amount of motion. Its cotton and wool comfort system absorbs some vibrations, limiting how much motion is felt across the surface of the mattress when one partner changes positions. Motion transfer could occur as a result of the bounce from the mattress’s coil core.

Any motion transfer on the Joybed LX is unlikely to be too disruptive for most, but it may not be best for light sleepers.

Pressure Relief

5.5 / 10

Because of its firm feel, the Joybed LX doesn’t offer as much pressure relief as many hybrid models. Its comfort system contains cotton and wool, which cushion the surface of the bed for added comfort. However, these materials don’t have the same pressure-relieving qualities as most memory foam, polyfoam, and latex comfort layers.

Sleepers with sharp pressure points may prefer the Medium-Plush version of the Joybed LXP, which tends to rate better for pressure relief due to its softer feel and layer of nanocoils.

An individual’s weight and sleep position will also influence the pressure they experience when sleeping on the mattress. Side sleepers will likely have the most pressure buildup, particularly around their shoulders and hips.

Temperature Control

7 / 10

Hybrid models tend to have a strong degree of temperature regulation, and the Joybed LX Mattress follows suit.

Breathable cotton in the cover and comfort layers allows significant airflow through the mattress. Wool in the comfort layer dissipates heat and wicks moisture away from the sleeper’s body. Air circulation through the coil core gives the mattress additional breathability.

Most sleepers are likely to stay cool and comfortable on the Joybed LX Mattress, even if they usually tend to sleep hot.

Edge Support

7 / 10

The Joybed LX Mattress’s edge support is a bit better than most hybrid models. A double column of coils around the perimeter of the coil layer provides added reinforcement. Most sleepers should be able to sleep near the edge of the bed without feeling like they might roll off. Sitting on the edge of the bed is also likely to feel secure.

People who weigh over 230 pounds may experience a bit more sinkage around the edges, but this shouldn’t be significant enough to limit the usable surface of the mattress.

Ease of Movement

7 / 10

Moving on the surface of the Joybed LX Mattress should be noticeably easy. The cotton and wool comfort system cushions the surface of the bed, but not enough to impede movement by much. The firm feel limits sinkage and the coil core gives the bed enough responsiveness to adjust to changes in pressure.

Off-Gassing

6.5 / 10

The Joybed is unlikely to have much of a “new mattress” smell. This is due to the Joybed LX Mattress”s construction. It does not contain any foam, which is usually the root cause of most mattress odors. Instead, it uses cotton, wool, and coils, none of which are prone to off-gassing. The mattress may have a mild natural smell at first, but we would expect this to air out very quickly thanks to its breathability.
