In 2018, iSense launched its sleep product line focused on accommodating couples without compromise. The company currently produces bedding, bases, and mattresses. The iSense Select Mattress is a hybrid model with a modular design that allows sleepers to manually adjust the firmness by switching out the coil system.

This is a departure from the brand’s other models, the iSense Hybrid Premier Mattress and the iSense Classic Mattress, which both contain air chambers so that sleepers can change the feel via the company’s app. Because of its lower-tech design, the iSense Select Mattress comes at a more budget-friendly price-point. The air-based models offer a broader spectrum of firmness options, ranging from soft (3) to firm (7). However, the iSense Select Mattress includes three of the most popular firmness options: medium soft (4), medium (5), and firm (7).

We’ll break down how the iSense Select Mattress performed in our lab-based tests, including which firmness levels were most comfortable for different types of sleepers.

Testing Team Takeaways

To test the iSense Select Mattress, we had three people on our testing team each take the bed home with them for one week. Here are their initial observations.

Back sleeper

Dunks head in ice water to wake up

The iSense Select was an interesting twist on a multi-firmness bed. I was especially happy to see a hybrid design here, since I love the feel of hybrids over airbeds. Overall, the bed performed like a great hybrid, but with the bonus that I could change out the coils if I wasn’t getting comfortable. I’m a back sleeper, but prefer my beds a little softer, so the medium (5) set of coils was my favorite.

I was fascinated at first by the design of the iSense Select, since you can swap out the coils to change the bed’s firmness. It’s pretty slick and relatively easy to do, and if you have a larger mattress size like a queen, you can swap out the coils on each side. As a combination sleeper, I found myself having fun swapping between the medium soft (4) and medium (5) coil sets depending on what I wanted that night.

Beds with split firmnesses like the iSense Select are great for couples, since everyone can choose the firmness they personally want to lay on. Airbeds are famous for their freedom of firmness choice, but they’re pretty pricey, so it’s good to see newer options like this. Personally, I found myself most comfortable on the firm (7) set of coils.

Side Sleepers

The iSense Select’s two polyfoam comfort layers cushion and cradle a side sleeper’s curves, while zoning in the second layer also promotes good posture. This combination provides notable pressure relief without sacrificing support.

Our testers gave all three of the iSense Select Mattress’ firmness options high marks for side sleeping. However, the plush (4) and medium (5) options were especially comfortable for testers under 230 pounds.

Back Sleepers

Back sleepers typically benefit from stable support, which the iSense Select can provide. This model’s two polyfoam comfort layers mold to a sleeper’s lower back to provide support. At the same time, the zoning bolsters their hips to prevent uncomfortable sagging and potential lumbar strain.

Members of our team generally preferred the iSense Select Mattress’ firm (7) option for back sleeping, though those under 230 pounds also found the plush (4) and medium (5) variations comfortable for this position.

Stomach Sleepers

Sag-free support is critical for a stomach sleeper’s posture, and the iSense Select Mattress fits the bill for many individuals. While the two polyfoam comfort layers prevent the surface from feeling hard against the front of a sleeper’s body, zoning in the second layer reduces the risk of the sleeper’s abdomen sinking in too deeply and pulling their spine out of alignment.

Because the right level of conforming and support is so critical for stomach sleepers, our testers’ firmness preferences corresponded directly to their weights. Team members under 130 pounds thought the plush (4) was a good match, while those over 130 pounds preferred the firm (7).

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

7 / 10

iSense Select – Plush: / 5

iSense Select – Medium: / 5

iSense Select – Firm: / 5

Motion isolation is pretty strong on the iSense Select, especially when compared to some other types of hybrids. The thicker foam layers go a long way toward absorbing movement so your partner doesn’t feel it on the other side of the bed. – Brad

As is standard among the best mattresses for couples, the iSense Select Mattress excels in motion isolation. Its two polyfoam comfort layers significantly limit surface-level vibrations, and the pocketed coil system effectively isolates more significant movements that reach the core.

When we took readings with a vibration sensor, we found that the plush (4) and medium (5) options absorbed motion particularly well. However, the firm (7) also performed very well compared to models with a similar feel.

Pressure Relief

8 / 10

iSense Select – Plush: / 5

iSense Select – Medium: / 5

iSense Select – Firm: / 5

The foams on this bed were nice and cushy. It took a bit of time and experimentation to figure out which coil sets were the best matches for me, but once I did, it all clicked. I sunk in just enough to take the pressure off my hips and shoulders, and woke up feeling nice and refreshed. – Mary

Thanks to its two-layer polyfoam comfort system, the iSense Select Mattress offers significant pressure relief. While we expect this from most plush (4) and medium (5) hybrid models, it’s less common in firm (7) sleep surfaces. The iSense Select’s polyfoam redistributes body weight well, and the zoning provides more targeted relief and support.

By mapping the pressure using a special pad, we could see that our testers’ body weights were spread fairly evenly across the surface. Team members of all weight groups also confirmed that they didn’t feel notable pressure points.

Temperature Control

7 / 10

iSense Select – Plush: / 5

iSense Select – Medium: / 5

iSense Select – Firm: / 5

I was comfy cozy sleeping on the iSense Select and didn’t notice much in the way of heat buildup. It’s a pretty cool bed, overall. – Mary

Hybrid models are often built for cooling, and the iSense Select Mattress follows suit. It includes a fabric cover designed to feel cool to the touch, open-cell polyfoam engineered for airflow, and a breathable coil core. This construction puts the iSense Select Mattress’ temperature regulation on par with most hybrid models.

Our team members reported maintaining a comfortable temperature throughout our testing process, though they felt a bit warmer on the plush (4) surface because of its hug. Temperature readings also showed minimal lingering heat when we removed a heat source.

Edge Support

7.5 / 10

iSense Select – Plush: / 5

iSense Select – Medium: / 5

iSense Select – Firm: / 5

I was concerned that a bed that lets you remove the coils would have weaker edges. The iSense team predicted this issue and added plenty of extra reinforcement around the edges. They’re pretty solid, regardless of which coil set you use. – Brad

Like most of the best hybrid mattresses, edge support is one of the iSense Select Mattress’ standout features. A foam encasement wraps around the perimeter of the coil system to limit compression that could otherwise make the edge of the mattress feel less secure.

In our tests, team members used the full mattress surface comfortably, including sitting and sleeping along the perimeter. While testers over 230 pounds felt a bit less stable on the plush (4) and medium (5) surfaces, no one reported restricting their movements due to perceived instability.

Ease of Movement

6.5 / 10

iSense Select – Plush: / 5

iSense Select – Medium: / 5

iSense Select – Firm: / 5

The iSense Select didn’t feel as bouncy as other hybrids, so it was a bit harder to move around on. The foams are decently thick, squishy, and comfortable so that’s the tradeoff here. I noticed the firmer coil sets gave the bed a little more pushback, so it was easier to move around on those. – Danny

While the iSense Select Mattress doesn’t impede movement, it doesn’t facilitate it to the same extent as many hybrid models. The foam comfort system regains its shape fairly quickly when the sleeper moves. The coils also make the surface fairly responsive models, but the model isn’t especially springy.

None of our team members struggled to change positions on the mattress, and we expect most sleepers will find the iSense Select Mattress suitably responsive. However, some sleepers with mobility issues may find it challenging to change position on the plush (4) option, particularly if they weigh over 230 pounds.

Off-Gassing

7 / 10

iSense Select – Plush: / 5

iSense Select – Medium: / 5

iSense Select – Firm: / 5

The off-gassing that came from the iSense Select was pretty standard for a hybrid, nothing wild. There was a bit of “new mattress smell” when we unboxed everything in the morning, but it was gone by the time I slept on it. – Danny

The iSense Select Mattress may emit some off-gassing odors, which is normal for models that contain synthetic foam. Mattresses that ship in a box are usually compressed and wrapped right after manufacturing, before they have time to air out. Lingering volatile organic compounds (VOCs) then release in your home after you unpack the mattress.

VOCs have a distinctive odor, though they’re widely considered harmless. If the smell bothers you, you can leave your new mattress in a well-ventilated room to air out.

iSense uses CertiPUR-US certified foam, so it meets third-party emissions standards. While our testers noticed a slight odor when they unboxed the iSense Select Mattress, it wasn’t overpowering. They reported the smell had mostly dissipated after 24 hours.

iSense Select Mattress Review Breakdown

The iSense Select is a hybrid mattress that measures 12 inches thick, qualifying as a high-profile model. It uses a modular design to allow for three changeable firmness options: medium soft (4), medium (5), and firm (7). Note that iSense refers to its medium soft (4) option as plush.

A fabric cover designed for cooling wraps around the exterior of the mattress. The top layer of the comfort system consists of 2.5 inches of polyfoam. This material uses an open-cell structure intended to cool the mattress. At the same time, it conforms to the sleeper’s body to cushion it and ease pressure. A second 1.5-inch polyfoam comfort layer underneath incorporates distinct firmness zones, reinforcing the center third of the bed for increased lumbar support.

One of the iSense Select’s most unique features is its 6-inch pocketed coil core. Each mattress comes with interchangeable coil systems to adjust the firmness. The coil layer is accessible by unzipping the top portion of the mattress. Sleepers can then switch out the coil system for a different firmness option. Mattress sizes intended for two people have a separate coil system on each side of the bed, allowing partners to select separate firmness options. Since the coils are pocketed, they also limit motion transfer, add responsiveness, and enhance contouring.

A foam encasement wraps around the outside of the coil system to hold it in place while fortifying the edge to allow sleepers to sit and lay securely along the perimeter. A 2-inch layer of polyfoam under the coil system provides a firm base to support the coils as they compress.
