Founded in 2018, iSense makes luxury customizable mattresses, pillows, platform beds, and adjustable bases that keep the unique needs of couples in mind.

iSense mattresses have adjustable air chambers for variable firmness on each side of the bed. Sleepers can choose from 20 different comfort settings for their side of the mattress using an app. In addition to standard sizes, iSense mattresses are also available in split and FlexHead designs that have extra features, allowing sleepers to customize the mattress for their specific needs and preferences.

iSense currently offers two mattress models: the Classic and Premier Hybrid. Both mattresses combine adjustable air cylinders with open-cell comfort foam for superior pressure relief and temperature regulation. The Classic has a polyfoam support layer, while the Premier Hybrid uses a pocketed coil core. The hybrid version is thicker than the foam model and features a built-in sensor that monitors sleep quality. It also has a firmer overall feel compared to the Classic.
We’ll cover the iSense Premier Hybrid Mattress’ materials, performance, and pricing to help you decide if it’s the best mattress for you.

Side Sleepers

The Hybrid Premier has 20 custom firmness settings to accommodate a range of side sleepers. A layer of open-cell foam is designed to wick heat away from the sleeper and cushions pressure-prone areas like the hips and shoulders.

The firmer settings prevent the hips from sinking too low for side sleepers over 230 pounds, helping to keep the spine in alignment. Those under 230 pounds require more cushioning at the hips and shoulders, so they benefit from softer settings. We found the Hybrid Premier performed well for side sleepers across all weight categories thanks to a wide range of customization options.

Back Sleepers

The Hybrid Premier’s durable construction performs well for back sleepers across all weight groups. Back sleepers need a sturdy mattress that reinforces the lumbar region, as a mattress that sags excessively can strain the lower back.

The responsive polyfoam layer conforms to the neck and legs while reinforcing the torso area. A robust coil support core limits sagging so the hips and shoulders stay level. Sturdy foam rails provide even lumbar support when sleeping near the sides of the mattress.

Back sleepers under 130 pounds experience the most support from moderately firm surfaces, while those over 130 pounds generally benefit from a medium firm to firm setting. Back sleepers can experiment with different comfort settings to find the right balance of contouring and support. All of our back-sleeping testers found the Hybrid Premier comfortable.

Stomach Sleepers

The mattress’ foam provides moderate contouring, and the coil support core minimizes deep sinkage in the middle of the body. Stomach sleepers require a firmer mattress to prevent the spine from falling out of alignment, which can lead to back pain.

We found the medium firm settings supported stomach sleepers under 130 pounds while still cushioning the legs and shoulders. Stomach sleepers over 130 pounds may need to adjust the mattress to firmer settings to keep the spine aligned. A firmer comfort setting increases stability for those over 230 pounds.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

7.5 / 10

The mattress does a good job at isolating motion, which is an important factor for anyone sharing a bed. Our testing team found the upper foam layer absorbed most surface vibrations, so co-sleepers should only notice minimal movement when their partner shifts positions. High-density foam rails absorb excess motion from the coiled core.

We noticed motion transfer varied somewhat depending on the comfort setting. The firmer levels are more responsive, so they don’t buffer movement as well as the softer settings. Couples shouldn’t notice any motion transfer on the split king mattress since it’s divided in the middle.

Pressure Relief

8 / 10

With 20 comfort settings, the Hybrid Premier gives sleepers plenty of range to maximize pressure relief. Couples with different sleep styles don’t have to compromise on a single firmness level and can customize their side of the bed to accommodate their unique preferences.

Adaptive polyfoam evenly cradles sleepers without allowing deep sinkage, and adjustable air chambers target the lumbar region for optimal spinal support. Side sleepers can soften the firmness level to cushion pressure points on the hips and shoulders. The firmer settings minimize lower back strain for stomach and back sleepers.

The coiled core adapts to each sleeper’s contours while evenly distributing body weight. A high-density foam base resists sagging, helping sleepers maintain proper spine alignment.

Temperature Control

7.5 / 10

The mattress has multiple cooling features designed to resist heat retention. The foam’s open-cell matrix and surface cooling treatment are engineered to dissipate heat. Even the softer settings maintain a somewhat responsive surface, preventing sleepers from sinking too deep into the mattress and body heat from becoming trapped.

The pocketed coils also promote airflow, and a breathable latex cover helps keep the surface temperature neutral.

Edge Support

7.5 / 10

iSense mattresses are designed to make co-sleeping more comfortable. The Hybrid Premier’s perimeter is reinforced with 9.5 inches of high-density polyfoam, meaning it maintains support even when individuals sleep or sit on the sides of the bed. This also allows sleepers to use the mattress’ entire surface. A sturdy coil support core and polyfoam base also help prevent deep impressions from forming.

Each mattress side is designed to support sleepers weighing up to 350 pounds. Those who weigh more may experience deep sinkage, especially near the edges.

Ease of Movement

7 / 10

Ease of movement depends on a mattress’ contouring level and responsiveness. Mattresses with deep contouring often excel at pressure relief, but they can feel confining to some sleepers.

Our testing team found sleepers were able to move quite freely on the Hybrid Premier since it doesn’t overly conform to the body. Responsive polyfoam doesn’t permit deep sinkage, so sleepers shouldn’t feel trapped in the mattress. Additionally, the bouncy coil support core aids in movement and makes getting in and out of bed easier.

Sleepers should keep in mind that movement is slightly more restricted on the softer settings since it permits more sinkage.

Off-Gassing

6.5 / 10

The mattress emits a moderate amount of off-gassing when it’s first unboxed. Off-gassing odors come from volatile organic compounds (VOCs), a by-product of foam manufacturing. iSense uses CertiPUR-US certified foams, meaning they meet strict standards for VOC emissions. Odors are strongest when the mattress is first unboxed but should dissipate after a few days.

iSense Hybrid Premier Mattress Review Breakdown

The iSense Hybrid Premier is an adjustable mattress that allows sleepers to set different firmness settings on each side of the bed. Using an app, sleepers can choose from 20 distinct firmness levels ranging from 10 to 100. The mattress measures 13.5 inches tall.

A spandex cover provides a cool surface, helping to draw heat away from the sleeper. The comfort system consists of 2.25 inches of polyfoam that cushions pressure points and resists deep sinkage. The foam’s open-cell matrix and gel cooling treatment are designed to minimize heat retention.

Next, a 5.5 inch layer of foam and air cylinders allow sleepers to customize the firmness setting.  This layer, known as Comfort Control Technology, consists of 14 air chambers that sleepers can inflate or deflate via the app. A foam border encases the layer, absorbing motion and providing edge support so that couples can change settings without disturbing their partner.

The support core’s pocketed coils give the mattress bounce and stability. The coils, which move independently of each other, reduce motion transfer and promote airflow throughout the mattress’ core. The coils are reinforced with binding fabric and durable foam to boost edge support, and robust edges give co-sleepers more usable surface area. A high-density polyfoam base stabilizes the entire mattress.

The mattress’ built-in sensor generates a nightly sleep score based on sleep duration, breathing, heart rate, and movement. CertiPUR-US certification ensures that the foams are free of harmful substances like formaldehyde, heavy metals, and phthalates.

The Hybrid Premier is compatible with most bed frames, platforms, box springs, and adjustable bases. The FlexHead and split king mattress sizes require an adjustable base, which is sold separately. When paired with the iSense Elite Adjustable Base, sleepers can change the incline of the upper and lower mattress sections. The FlexHead models have dual-sided controls for adjusting the angle of the upper body. Split sizes are divided in the center so couples can adjust their sides independently.

The adjustable base also has an anti-snoring feature that allows couples to discreetly raise their partner’s head to minimize snoring. The base also provides sonic massage therapy, lighting under the bed, and a USB port on each side.

Mattress Prices and Sizing

The Hybrid Premier’s steeper price reflects its high-quality materials and innovative features. Given its complex design, the mattress’ cost is closer to a luxury airbed than a typical hybrid mattress. Airbeds are some of the most expensive mattresses on the market, so the Hybrid Premier is geared toward luxury shoppers. iSense offers financing to make the mattress more accessible and offers occasional promotions.

Shoppers should note that the mattress doesn’t come in standard twin or full sizes. The split king is divided in the center so couples can adjust the upper and lower sections independently. The FlexHead, which is available in king and California king sizes, allows sleepers to change the angle of the head of the mattress on each side. An adjustable base is required for the split king, FlexHead king, and FlexHead California king sizes and is sold separately on their website.
