Side Sleepers

Each Helix Luxe model is designed with certain types of sleepers. The Midnight Luxe, Sunset Luxe, and Twilight Luxe were created with side sleepers in mind. Each of these models contains one to two memory foam layers that contour closely to cushion the shoulders and hips, promote even spinal alignment, and alleviate pressure points that often occur when sleeping in this position.

Findings from our tests were consistent with Helix recommendations. The Sunset Luxe was the most popular option among side sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds, the Midnight Luxe earned its most favorable ratings from side sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds, and the Twilight Luxe provided adequate support for side sleepers over 230 pounds.

The side sleepers on our team also felt comfortable on other Luxe models. In particular, side sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds received ample cushioning from the Moonlight Luxe, and those weighing 130 to 230 pounds felt very comfortable on the Dusk Luxe. Since the Plus Luxe is designed specifically for people over 230 pounds, the mattress earned its highest ratings from side sleepers on our team in this weight range — though those between 130 and 230 pounds also found this model comfortable.

Back Sleepers

Generally speaking, back sleepers need a mattress that cushions the body and alleviates pressure while maintaining an even sleep surface with limited sinkage around the middle. Since all six Luxe models feature extra coil reinforcement for the midsection, we found the best Luxe option for any given back sleeper depends on two factors: the firmness level of the mattress and the sleeper’s weight.

The Dawn Luxe, Dusk Luxe, and Moonlight Luxe are all designed for back sleepers. During our tests, back sleepers on our team who weigh less than 130 pounds received the most cushioning from the Moonlight Luxe. This model was too soft for our back sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds, who preferred the Dusk Luxe and Dawn Luxe instead. The latter also offered adequate support and the right amount of cushioning for most of our back sleepers weighing more than 230 pounds.

The back sleepers on our team weighing less than 130 pounds also found the Sunset Luxe comfortable, but awarded higher ratings to the Midnight Luxe. Those who weigh 130 pounds or more received sufficient support from the Twilight Luxe. For the Plus Luxe, back sleepers on our team across all weight groups felt comfortable and sufficiently supported on the mattress, but the most favorable ratings came from those weighing 130 to 230 pounds.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers often have a harder time finding a comfortable mattress compared to side or back sleepers. This is because stomach sleeping is associated with more aches and pains. Sleeping face-down causes your entire body to sink into the mattress, and the uneven support can cause soreness – especially in the neck and lower back.

The Dawn Luxe, Dusk Luxe, and Moonlight Luxe were specifically designed for stomach sleepers. However, the latter felt too soft for the bulk of stomach sleepers on our team. Those weighing less than 130 pounds preferred the Dusk Luxe, while our stomach sleepers of at least 130 pounds were much more comfortable on the Dawn Luxe.

Our stomach sleepers also had positive things to say about some of the Luxe models designed for side sleepers. Namely, the Midnight Luxe was popular among stomach sleepers under 130 pounds, while the Twilight Luxe delivered the support needed for stomach sleepers weighing 130 pounds or more. Stomach sleepers across all three weight groups gave high marks to the Helix Plus Luxe, with the strongest ratings coming from those in the range of 130 to 230 pounds.

Helix Luxe Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

8.5 / 10

Helix Sunset Luxe: / 5

Helix Moonlight Luxe: / 5

Helix Midnight Luxe: / 5

Helix Dusk Luxe: / 5

Helix Twilight Luxe: / 5

Helix Dawn Luxe: / 5

Helix Plus Luxe: / 5

Since all of the Helix Luxe models feature pillow-tops cushioned with multiple foam layers, each mattress provides above-average motion isolation compared to other hybrids. However, some Luxe models perform better in this area than others. This will be a running theme throughout the Helix Luxe performance ratings. Due to the varying firmness levels of these mattresses, each performance category will feature some Luxe models that stand out from the others.

Our tests have shown that the Sunset Luxe, Midnight Luxe, and Dusk Luxe isolate motion to a significant extent. This can be attributed to the plusher memory foam layers found in both of these mattresses relative to other Luxe models, since softer materials absorb more movement than firmer materials. Our testers noticed little to no motion transfer when lying side by side on these mattresses. The Helix Plus Luxe also isolates motion remarkably well for a firmer hybrid — this can be attributed to the thick foam layers in its comfort system.

We felt more transfer on the Moonlight Luxe, Dawn Luxe, and Twilight Luxe. While we don’t think these mattresses will be too responsive for most couples, people who are particularly sensitive to movement while they sleep may want to consider a softer Luxe model for motion isolation purposes.

Pressure Relief

Helix Sunset Luxe: / 5

Helix Moonlight Luxe: / 5

Helix Midnight Luxe: / 5

Helix Dusk Luxe: / 5

Helix Twilight Luxe: / 5

Helix Dawn Luxe: / 5

Helix Plus Luxe: / 5

Softer mattresses tend to alleviate pressure more than firmer models. Plusher foam layers usually translate to more cushioning for the shoulders and hips, two areas where side and back sleepers often experience pressure buildup.

We evaluate mattresses for pressure relief using sensors placed in different areas of the tester’s body. Pressure-mapping imagery allows us to pinpoint where pressure is building as each tester sinks into the mattress. During these tests for Helix Luxe models, the Moonlight Luxe, Sunset Luxe, Midnight Luxe, and Dusk Luxe all performed exceptionally well. We detected very little pressure buildup from any of our testers, especially for those in the range of 230 pounds or less.

Our testers who weigh more than 230 pounds preferred the Moonlight Luxe and Sunset Luxe for their more supportive designs. These testers also received adequate pressure relief from the Dawn Luxe and Twilight Luxe. Our tests show the Helix Plus Luxe alleviates pressure well for people who weigh at least 130 pounds, though team members weighing more than 230 pounds benefited most from lying on this mattress.

Temperature Control

8 / 10

Helix Sunset Luxe: / 5

Helix Moonlight Luxe: / 5

Helix Midnight Luxe: / 5

Helix Dusk Luxe: / 5

Helix Twilight Luxe: / 5

Helix Dawn Luxe: / 5

Helix Plus Luxe: / 5

Helix Luxe mattresses – like many competing hybrids – sleep fairly cool due to their open coil systems, which generate a fair amount of airflow to keep the interior cool. Additionally, all Luxe models are encased in Tencel covers. Tencel is a eucalyptus-derived fabric that is both breathable and moisture-wicking, so the surface of your Luxe should remain cool most of the time.

Our tests have determined that the Dawn Luxe controls temperature better than any other mattress in the Luxe series. This is not surprising, since the Dawn Luxe is also the firmest of the bunch. Firmer models usually maintain even support for sleeping, so you won’t sink too deeply into the mattress and lose surface airflow. These mattresses also have firmer foam layers, which are less likely to trap heat compared to softer foam layers.

The other Luxe models are on par with the average hybrid model in terms of cooling and temperature regulation. Using a thermal camera to gauge heat retention, we noticed some buildup – particularly for the Sunset Luxe and Moonlight Luxe – but most of our testers felt reasonably comfortable. The Plus Luxe features thick foam layers that may trap some heat, but the cooling cover and steady airflow through the coils should offset heat retention to a noticeable degree.

Those who consider themselves exceptionally hot sleepers may want to consider the Dawn Luxe to meet their cooling needs. You can also upgrade to include a GlacioTex Cooling Cover for your Luxe, which is made with phase change material to dissipate heat on contact. If you don’t experience uncomfortable heat retention while you sleep, then temperature control may not be the most important factor for finding your ideal mattress.

Edge Support

8.5 / 10

Helix Sunset Luxe: / 5

Helix Moonlight Luxe: / 5

Helix Midnight Luxe: / 5

Helix Dusk Luxe: / 5

Helix Twilight Luxe: / 5

Helix Dawn Luxe: / 5

Helix Plus Luxe: / 5

All Luxe models are constructed with zoned coil systems. Thicker coils line the perimeter to push back against compression, limit sinkage, and help you get in and out of bed with relative ease. Our testing showed mixed results across the six Luxe mattresses. This can be attributed to their different firmness levels.

We found little to no sinkage when testing the Dawn Luxe and Twilight Luxe. These models provide the most pushback and maintain mostly even edge support, even for our testers who weigh more than 230 pounds.

There was more sinkage when testing the Midnight Luxe and Dusk Luxe, but not enough to warrant a negative rating for either mattress. People who weigh more than 230 pounds may not receive enough edge support from these models, and struggle getting in and out of bed as a result. Lighter individuals may notice a bit of sink, but probably not enough to hinder their on-off movements.

The Moonlight Luxe and Sunset Luxe earned the least favorable ratings during our edge support tests. These models contain the softest foam layers, which are more likely to sink beneath your body regardless of how much you weigh. People under 130 pounds may encounter minimal difficulty getting on and off the Moonlight Luxe and Sunset Luxe. Those who weigh more may want to consider a firmer Luxe model. The Plus Luxe feels fairly sturdy along the edges. Although the foam layers may compress a bit, reinforced perimeter coils provide enough pushback to prevent excessive sinkage.

Ease of Movement

7.5 / 10

Helix Sunset Luxe: / 5

Helix Moonlight Luxe: / 5

Helix Midnight Luxe: / 5

Helix Dusk Luxe: / 5

Helix Twilight Luxe: / 5

Helix Dawn Luxe: / 5

Helix Plus Luxe: / 5

Like edge support, ease of movement is directly linked to firmness level. Softer mattresses may sink too much when you move across the surface, causing you to feel trapped or stuck. Firmer models tend to facilitate movement better because excessive sinkage is less of an issue.

In addition to enhanced perimeter support, each Luxe model’s coil system features zoned placement beneath different areas of the body. Extra coil reinforcement around the midsection can also help you move across the mattress with ease – though this largely depends on firmness. The Dawn Luxe and Twilight Luxe led the pack in this performance category. A firmer feel coupled with strong pushback throughout the interior helped our testers move across these mattresses without sinking or dipping.

The Dusk Luxe and Moonlight Luxe were fairly easy to move across for testers weighing up to 230 pounds. Those who weigh more encountered some sinkage, especially in places where coil support is less robust. For the Midnight Luxe and Sunset Luxe, ease of movement is fair at best. Anyone who weighs 130 pounds or more may sink to an uncomfortable extent when moving across either mattress.

The Helix Plus Luxe is fairly easy to move across thanks to responsive foams in its comfort system and robust pocketed coils. Since the mattress is designed for people over 230 pounds, sleepers in this weight range may prefer the Plus Luxe over other Helix models.

Off-Gassing

8 / 10

Helix Sunset Luxe: / 5

Helix Moonlight Luxe: / 5

Helix Midnight Luxe: / 5

Helix Dusk Luxe: / 5

Helix Twilight Luxe: / 5

Helix Dawn Luxe: / 5

Off-gassing refers to the “new mattress smells” people often notice after unboxing their bed. Foam is associated with the strongest off-gassing because it emits volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which carry a distinct chemical odor often described as “plastic-like.” Other mattress materials do not emit VOCs, but initial smells may still be present.

Off-gassing is a performance area where all six Luxe models performed at the same level. Since each of these mattresses features a substantial amount of foam, we detected some noticeable odor immediately after removing each one from its shipping box. The smells gradually subsided over the next 48 hours. By day three, we didn’t notice any off-gassing whatsoever. Hybrids tend to shed their odor rather quickly, thanks in part to air circulation through their coil systems.

If your Helix Luxe smells excessively when new, we suggest placing the mattress in a well-ventilated room for up to two days. This can help the foam air out and make the mattress more pleasant for sleeping.

Helix Luxe Mattress Sizes

The Helix Luxe line is available in six standard sizes ranging from twin to California king. In 2024, Helix also introduced short queen and RV king sizes for each Luxe model. Each size option is 14 inches thick, meaning you may have to purchase deep-pocket sheets.

Pricewise, these models are on par with other luxury hybrids. Helix Luxe mattresses are a decent value, especially when considering their high-quality materials, above-average durability, and 15-year warranty. Opting for the GlacioTex Cooling Cover increases the mattress’ overall price-point, though not considerably.

Trial, Warranty, and Shipping Policies

Availability

Helix ships mattresses directly to customers in the U.S. and Canada. You can purchase Helix mattresses through the company’s website or at select partner showrooms.

Shipping

Helix ships its products to all 50 states and the Canadian provinces. You can expect your mattress to arrive within one to four weeks of placing your order. Each mattress ships via FedEx. Shipping within the contiguous U.S. is free. Shipping fees apply for orders to Alaska and Hawaii, and Canadian orders include delivery charges and custom taxes.

The mattress arrives compressed, sealed in plastic, and packaged in a box measuring 47 inches by 16 inches by 16 inches. You may need a partner to help move the mattress into your room of choice. To set it up, slide the sealed mattress out of the box, lay it on your foundation, carefully cut the plastic wrapping, and let the mattress expand for two hours.

Additional Services

Helix does not offer White Glove delivery, and old mattress removal is not widely available. However, to comply with state laws, Helix offers old mattress removal for free to customers in California.

Sleep Trial

Helix offers shoppers a 100-night sleep trial that starts when the mattress arrives at your home. After an initial 30-night break-in period, you can return your mattress for a full refund of the purchase price. Helix arranges pickup with a local removal partner, then recycles or donates the mattress if possible.

If you like your mattress but would prefer a slightly softer or firmer feel, you can also contact Helix during the trial period for a free topper to fine-tune the firmness.

Warranty

Each Helix Luxe Mattress carries a 15-year limited warranty. This policy covers indentations greater than 1 inch, splits, cracks, and defects in the cover assembly. The warranty extends to the original purchaser who bought the mattress from an authorized retailer. It does not cover normal wear and tear or damage caused by abuse. Removing the cover or using improper support voids the warranty.
The owner is responsible for transportation charges associated with repairs or replacements. If Helix confirms a qualifying defect, it will reimburse up to $100 in shipping costs and elect to either repair or replace the mattress. Owners may be asked to provide their receipt as proof of purchase.
