Side Sleepers
The Helix Kids Mattress is a great option for children who sleep on their sides. Its foam materials work in concert with the pocketed coils to cushion the hips and shoulders. The bed reduces painful impact while promoting spinal alignment.
The ability to change the firmness by flipping the mattress over also helps side sleepers get optimal support. Kids with a higher body weight tend to prefer the medium firm (6) side, but parents can let their child try both sides to see which feels more comfortable.
Back Sleepers
The Helix Kids Mattress is a solid option for back sleepers under 230 pounds. Its sturdy support core prevents sagging or sinking, and the foam layers can adapt to the natural curvature of the lower spine.
For kids with a higher body weight, the medium soft (4) side may feel too plush when back sleeping. But most kids who are back sleepers will get quality support from this mattress; they just have to choose the side that best suits their preferences.
Stomach Sleepers
Stomach sleepers get average support from this mattress. It maintains a flat and stable sleep surface, but there can be a bit too much sink for some stomach sleepers, especially on the medium soft (4) side. This problem mostly affects kids who are older and have a higher body weight.
Mattress Performance
In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.
Motion Isolation
7.5
/ 10
Since this mattress isn’t designed to be shared with a bed partner, motion isolation isn’t likely a major consideration for people buying it. Nevertheless, we did find that materials in the Helix Kids were effective at keeping vibrations from spreading across the mattress surface.
The motion isolation is especially noticeable on the medium soft (4) side, which features contouring memory foam in the top layer.
Pressure Relief
8
/ 10
Both sides of the Helix Kids Mattress provide significant pressure relief. On the medium soft (4) side, memory foam gently cradles heavier parts of the body, giving kids a sensation of comfort and support.
On the medium firm (6) side, there’s less contouring, but the foam still effectively cushions pressure points. The pocketed coils also contribute to pressure relief through their ability to provide targeted support based on how a child’s weight is distributed on the bed.
Temperature Control
7.5
/ 10
In our testing, the Helix Kids Mattress didn’t sleep excessively hot or cold. It can retain some heat, especially on the medium soft (4) side, but, by and large, it stays at a relatively neutral temperature.
The Tencel fabric in the mattress cover is highly breathable, which makes it easier for heat to escape instead of collecting in the mattress. Air can also move through the coil support core, which reduces heat retention.
Edge Support
8
/ 10
We appreciated the strong edge support in this mattress, which gives parents peace of mind that their child isn’t going to accidentally roll off of the bed.
Edge support is powered by the pocketed coils, which are robust and dependable around the perimeter of the mattress. While the foam compresses more on the medium soft (4) side, the coils still maintain notable edge support.
Ease of Movement
6.5
/ 10
Ease of movement is average to slightly above-average on the Helix Kids. Most children won’t have any trouble adjusting their sleeping position or getting in and out of bed.
At the same time, the mattress doesn’t feel excessively bouncy. It has enough responsiveness from the coils to make movement easy, but it never feels like a trampoline.
Off-Gassing
7
/ 10
The Helix Kids Mattress gives off roughly the same amount of “new mattress smell” as other models with a similar design. This mostly comes from the foam materials
The mattress has certifications, including from Certi-PUR US, that verify that there are no traces of potentially dangerous chemicals in it.
The Helix Kids Mattress measures 8 inches tall and has a reversible design with different firmness levels on each side. The cover of the mattress is made with breathable Tencel fabric backed by a fiberglass-free fire barrier.
The support core in the center of the mattress is made with sturdy, individually wrapped coils. Also known as pocketed coils, these springs can move independently from the coils around them, enabling more tailored support.
One side of the mattress is medium firm (6) and intended for children who are 3 to 7 years old. This side includes a layer of responsive polyfoam above the coils that adds cushioning without too much sink.
The other side of the mattress is medium soft (4) and designed for children who are 8 to 12 years old. It features a comfort layer of gel-infused memory foam for extra contouring and pressure relief.
The Tencel cover is treated with a plant-based water repellent to combat spills and stains. It also has an antimicrobial treatment to reduce bacterial growth.
Firmness
Flippable: Medium Soft (4), Medium Firm (6)

Construction
A soft Tencel cover encases the mattress, covering both sides. The medium firm side has a dense polyfoam comfort layer, while the medium soft side contains conforming, gel-infused memory foam. In the support core, pocketed coils add support while reinforcing the bed’s edges.
Because it is designed for children aged 3-12, the Helix Kids mattress is offered in twin and full sizes.
