Testing Team Takeaways
To test the Cocoon Chill Hybrid Mattress, we had three people on our testing team each take the bed home with them for one week. Here are their initial observations.
Jeremy Klein
Senior Product Testing Manager
Side sleeper
160 lbs.
Nightly melatonin user
The Cocoon Chill Hybrid is right in the sweet spot for me. It has the right amount of cushioning for my shoulders and hips, but the coils give it enough pushback that I didn’t feel swallowed up by the memory foam.
Colin Simpson
Product Research Manager
Side sleeper
190 lbs.
Talks in sleep (like a lot)
I’m a side sleeper like Jeremy, and at times I felt the sink was a bit too much. I think that will be a problem for most sleepers with a higher body weight. In most categories, the Cocoon Chill Hybrid was fine, but there’s no standout part of its performance.
Mary Fenton
Head of Product Content
Hybrid sleeper
150 lbs.
Sleeps with noise machine
I found the mattress to be most comfortable when sleeping on my side. It was good enough when on my back or stomach, but, like Colin said, I think its firmness level may be lacking for a lot of back and stomach sleepers.

Side Sleepers
In our Test Lab, we found that the Cocoon Chill Hybrid works best for side sleepers who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds. Its memory foam layer adapted to accommodate their hips and shoulders so that the spine stayed in a more neutral position. Side sleepers under 130 pounds also liked the feel of the mattress, but some felt it was a touch too firm.
Side sleepers over 230 pounds found that their joints pushed too far into the foam, which reduced both comfort and spinal support.
Back Sleepers
Among back sleepers, the Cocoon Chill Hybrid is best for those whose body weight is under 130 pounds. The medium firm (6) feel was enough to hold their hips in line with the rest of the body while lightly cushioning the natural curve of their lower back.
Some back sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds also complimented the balanced feel of the mattress, but many said that there was too much sinkage to have optimal support. That was also a common complaint from back sleepers over 230 pounds.
Stomach Sleepers
The Cocoon Chill Hybrid isn’t a great fit for most stomach sleepers. While our testing team found that it’s workable for those under 130 pounds, stomach sleepers generally get better support from a firmer mattress. When firmness is lacking, the hips and belly can sink into the foam, drawing the body into a U-shape that can strain muscles in the back.
In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.
Motion Isolation
7
/ 10
“Some vibration carries across this mattress surface, but unless you’re a light sleeper or your bed partner plans to be jumping up and down on their side of the bed, I don’t think it’s going to interfere too much with your sleep.” – Colin
With a top layer of memory foam, the Cocoon Chill Hybrid effectively isolates most motion. Because there is some bounce from the pocketed coils, you may still notice a few vibrations. But the movement has to be pretty exaggerated for it to feel disruptive, which means most couples can share this mattress without a problem.
Pressure Relief
7.5
/ 10
“There’s a nice balance of cushioning and pushback on this mattress. It results in above-average pressure relief for side sleepers under 230 pounds, but the spinal support may not be as great for other sleepers.” – Jeremy
Like many hybrid models that use memory foam, the Cocoon Chill Hybrid’s conforming can help ease sharp pressure points by adapting to a sleeper’s weight.
With a medium firm (6) feel, that contouring can result in quality support for a wide range of sleepers. But our testing found that the Chill Hybrid’s ability to relieve pressure was lower for many stomach sleepers and people over 230 pounds.
Temperature Control
7
/ 10
“I didn’t encounter any issues with sleeping hot on the Cocoon Chill Hybrid. Its temperature stayed pretty neutral, especially since I didn’t find myself sinking too deeply into the memory foam layer.” – Mary
In our temperature tests, the Cocoon Chill Hybrid maintained a neutral temperature about as well as most other hybrid mattresses.
While its memory foam can retain heat, the cover’s phase change material is engineered to help dissipate that heat. Airflow through the coils can also prevent excessive heat buildup.
Nevertheless, hot sleepers may prefer a mattress without memory foam. People over 230 pounds may also sleep hotter on this mattress since the foam will contour more tightly against their skin.
Edge Support
7
/ 10
“Most people should be able to sleep comfortably near the edge of this mattress. When sitting on the edge, the foam compresses a bit more than you’d like, but it’s comparable to a lot of other hybrid mattresses out there.” – Colin
Reinforced edges in the Cocoon Chill Hybrid’s support core add stability to the perimeter of this mattress, counteracting some of the sinkage from the top layer of memory foam.
Our team didn’t find edge support to be lacking, but they did note that the most significant complaints about the edges came from people over 230 pounds who experienced more pronounced foam compression.
Ease of Movement
6.5
/ 10
“I didn’t feel stuck in place, but there was a bit of resistance when I wanted to turn from one side to the other. It may be more of a problem for combination sleepers who frequently adjust their position.” – Jeremy
The Cocoon Chill Hybrid rates as average for ease of movement. On one hand, the memory foam can at times feel like it’s holding the body in place. On the other hand, the coils give the mattress bounce that facilitates movement.
Our team found that these largely cancel each other out, so movement isn’t extremely easy or extremely difficult. There may be more challenges for people with a higher body weight who sink more deeply into the foam. Combination sleepers over 230 pounds may prefer a mattress with higher scores for ease of movement.
Off-Gassing
6
/ 10
“The mattress gave off an odor for a few days, but it didn’t bother me much. It didn’t seem much worse than most other mattresses with foam layers.” – Mary
Like other models that contain synthetic foam, the Cocoon Chill Hybrid may have an initial “new mattress smell.” Our team found the smell to be clearly detectable but not overpowering. If you can use a fan or an open window to get fresh air into your bedroom, the smell should dissipate within a few days.
Cocoon Chill Hybrid Mattress Review Breakdown
The Cocoon Chill Hybrid Mattress is a hybrid mattress that is 12 inches tall and has a firmness level of medium firm (6).
The cover of the mattress is made with a stretch-knit fabric woven with a phase change material that’s engineered to promote temperature neutrality.
The Cocoon Chill Hybrid has three interior layers. The top layer is made with memory foam that contours to the body to give extra cushioning to the heaviest areas. This material is also well-known for its ability to isolate motion.
Below this is a layer of polyfoam that adds stability and prevents the body from sinking too deeply into the mattress.
The bottom layer is the support core, which contains pocketed innerspring coils. Each coil can move independently from the coils around it, allowing the mattress to provide more tailored support. The perimeter is reinforced to increase reinforcement along the edges.
