Casper is one of the most popular direct-to-consumer mattress brands. The company currently offers five individual mattress models with varying price-points.

This review will focus on the Dream Hybrid, one of Casper’s mid-range models in terms of pricing. The design consists of polyfoam and zoned memory foam layers in the comfort system, and a support core of pocketed coils encased in dense foam. This balanced construction ensures gentle cushioning on the surface and a light bounce in response to movement.

In addition to the standard Dream Hybrid, Casper offers the Dream Max. This luxury upgrade builds on the standard hybrid with a second memory foam layer that’s been cut with airflow channels to promote circulation and help the mattress stay extra cool.

We’ll discuss the Casper Dream Hybrid and Dream Max in-depth, detailing its construction, pricing, performance, reviews, and more. If you are considering purchasing this mattress, keep reading for more information.

Side Sleepers:

The Dream Hybrid and Dream Max each have a medium feel, and are likely to provide a good balance of pressure relief and support for side sleepers who weigh up to 230 pounds. Sleepers over 230 pounds tend to prefer firmer mattresses with more support. When sleeping on their sides on these mattresses, individuals in this weight group could experience more pressure buildup and sinkage, particularly around their hips.

Because the hips and shoulders tend to be the widest parts of the body, side sleepers frequently experience pressure points around these body parts. The soft, multilayer comfort systems of these mattresses spread out body weight more evenly to relieve pressure points. The zoned foam layer gives more support to the midsection of the sleeper’s body to reduce the risk of their hips sinking in excessively.

Back Sleepers:

The Dream Hybrid and Dream Max can provide excellent support for back sleepers under 130 pounds. However, they are less supportive for individuals who weigh more. To maintain proper spinal alignment, back sleepers usually require a relatively even surface that doesn’t sag. The zoned memory foam can help reduce sagging around the midsection of the mattress, which may be beneficial to back sleepers.

The medium feel of these mattresses may cause heavier individuals to sink in more and put their spines out of alignment. This effect is less noticeable for back sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds, who may still find the Dream Hybrid and Dream Max quite comfortable. However, back sleepers over 230 pounds are more likely to experience sinkage around their midsections.

Stomach Sleepers:

The Dream Hybrid and Dream Max’s zoned memory foam layers reinforce the middle of the mattress, reducing how far a stomach sleeper’s midsection can sink in. While this targeted support may make the mattresses better suited to stomach sleeping than some hybrid mattresses, the medium feel and thick comfort layers could be a drawback for people who primarily use the stomach position.

The stomach sleeper’s midsection can sink in quite a bit before reaching the zoned layer. Additionally, the medium feel is softer than ideal for many stomach sleepers, especially heavier individuals. However, stomach sleepers who weigh under 130 pounds are likely to find the Dream Hybrid and Dream Max sufficiently firm and supportive.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

8.5 / 10

Casper Dream Hybrid: / 5

Casper Dream Max: / 5

The Dream Hybrid isolates motion to a greater extent than many hybrid mattresses on the market.

The multilayer comfort system absorbs a significant amount of motion. The zoned memory foam and polyfoam layers further reduce the amount of motion that reaches the coil core. Since springs have more bounce to them than most foam, coil layers sometimes transfer motion. However, the Dream Hybrid uses pocketed coils encased in foam, which move separately from each other to limit motion transfer. Additionally, the thick foam layers diminish the movement that reaches the core and vibrations that may emanate from the core.

Since the Dream Max features an additional foam layer, the mattress isolates motion to an even greater extent than the Dream Hybrid.

Pressure Relief

9 / 10

Casper Dream Hybrid: / 5

Casper Dream Max: / 5

The Dream Hybrid and Dream Max both use a thick comfort system that balances conforming and support. This gives the mattress stronger pressure relief than many competing hybrid models.

The substantial comfort system spreads out the sleeper’s weight so that pressure is less likely to build up around wider, heavier body parts.

While the comfort system provides significant contouring, the zoned memory foam also supports the spine to promote even alignment and reduce pressure buildup.

Both the Dream Hybrid and Dream Max are softer than many hybrids on the market, which further amplifies the contouring that sleepers are likely to experience. The Dream Max gets a slight leg up for pressure relief due to its extra foam layer.

Temperature Control

7 / 10

Casper Dream Hybrid: / 5

Casper Dream Max: / 5

The Dream Hybrid regulates temperature well, much like many other hybrids sold today.

The two layers of the comfort system use open-cell materials, which are quite breathable. Air also circulates freely through the pocketed coils to keep the interior cool. You may notice some heat buildup on the surface, but this effect should be minimal.

The Dream Max’s third layer features channels designed to promote additional airflow. As a result, this mattress sleeps noticeably cooler than the Dream Hybrid.

Edge Support

6.5 / 10

Casper Dream Hybrid: / 5

Casper Dream Max: / 5

The Dream Hybrid has moderate edge support. While the coils are encased in foam intended to limit compression, the medium feel may lead to sinkage along the edges when you get in and out of bed.

The Dream Max’s additional foam layer can lead to even more compression along the perimeter. That said, both mattresses performed at roughly the same level during our edge support tests.

Ease of Movement

7 / 10

Casper Dream Hybrid: / 5

Casper Dream Max: / 5

The Dream Hybrid’s relatively foam layers conform closely to the sleeper’s body. For some individuals, this may make it more challenging to change sleep positions or move across the surface of the bed.

While the thicker comfort system may create the sensation of sleeping “in” the bed rather than “on” the bed, most individuals likely won’t experience the “trapped in the bed” feeling sometimes associated with thick comfort layers. Additionally, the Dream Hybrid’s coil core gives extra support and bounce, which may make it feel more responsive.

The Dream Max’s third foam layer makes a noticeable difference. Our testers encountered more difficulty changing sleep positions and moving across this mattress.

Off-Gassing

6.5 / 10

Casper Dream Hybrid: / 5

Casper Dream Max: / 5

Odor is common with new mattresses, especially in those with synthetic foams. These odors are usually due to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are released into the air. These chemicals and odors are generally considered harmless for most people and do not usually last.

Many owners choose to air out their new mattress before using it to allow these smells to dissipate. Most off-gassing odors air out within a few hours to a few days if you leave the mattress in a well-ventilated room.

Like most other hybrid models, the Dream Hybrid and Dream Max may emit a slight odor when first unpackaged. Because the mattress is exceptionally breathable thanks to the perforated layers in the comfort system and the coil core, these odors may air out more quickly than average.

Casper Dream Hybrid Mattress Review Breakdown

The Casper Dream Hybrid is a hybrid model made up of two foam layers over foam-encased pocketed coils. A knit cover gives the mattress a soft, breathable surface.

The comfort system is constructed with a top layer of open-cell polyfoam that allows cooling airflow while cushioning the sleeper. The next layer is made of memory foam divided into different firmness zones to provide targeted midsection support. In the support core, pocketed coils encased in dense foam reinforce the sleep surface while adding more bounce and breathability.

The Dream Max builds on this design with the same components, plus an extra 2 inches of memory foam that act as the bed’s transitional layer. Airflow channels increase circulation to help the mattress stay cool.

Both mattresses rate as a 5 on the 10-point firmness scale, which translates to a medium feel. This is on the soft end of the average range for hybrid models. The Dream Hybrid measures 12 inches thick, and the Dream Max measures 14 inches thick.
