The Brooklyn Bedding Spartan mattress is a luxury hybrid that uses infrared technology to enhance rest and recovery. Those with an active lifestyle are drawn to the mattress, but may wonder if it is worth the hype. We take an in-depth look at the mattress construction and performance to help shoppers decide.

Brooklyn Bedding has been manufacturing high-quality mattresses in the United States since 2009, with a reputation for fair pricing and expert craftsmanship. The company offers a lineup of mattresses that includes: the Aurora Luxe, the Signature Hybrid, the Bowery Hybrid, the Spartan, and the Bloom.

The Spartan mattress, which we cover in this review, is one of the company’s most expensive beds. It is designed for active recovery and uses a smart fabric cover to help restore bodies at night. The bed features a copper-infused foam to improve sleep quality and three total layers of foam in the comfort system to relieve pressure and provide ease of movement. The Spartan has pocketed coils that add stability and bounce to the mattress. It comes in three firmness options: soft, medium, and firm. These correspond to medium soft (4), medium firm (6), and firm (7).

We’ll cover how the mattress performs in essential categories including motion isolation, pressure relief, and temperature regulation. We’ll also review pricing, customer reviews, and company policies, and make recommendations based on body weight and sleeping positions.

Side Sleepers

The soft foams of the Spartan mattress cushion the shoulders and hips. This provides excellent pressure relief for side sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds. As people who weigh less than 130 pounds put less weight on the mattress than others, they need softer foams in order to sink in and experience the benefits of the mattress.

Those who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds will find that the soft Spartan offers good support. The coil base keeps the spine aligned, while the foam comfort system contours to the shape of the body. This prevents pressure from building up in the areas that sink into the mattress.

People who sleep on their sides and weigh more than 230 pounds will want to consider the medium or firm options instead. The soft option could cause sleepers to sink in too deeply. If the hips are not properly supported, the spine will not stay aligned.

Back Sleepers

For back sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds, the soft Spartan model is an excellent choice. The foam conforms closely and supports the lumbar region. This helps sleepers maintain a neutral posture, and prevents pressure from building up in the lower back.

Those who weigh more than 130 pounds will find that the soft model only provides fair support. Sleepers who weigh more than 130 pounds are more likely to sink into the thick, soft foam layers. This can press the spine into a curved shape and cause lower back pain.

Back sleepers need ample support, especially in the lower back, to keep the spine aligned. Those who weigh more than 130 pounds put more pressure on the mattress, especially in the lower back and hip areas. The coils still offer support, but the medium or firm options would be better.

Stomach Sleepers

The soft model is a standout pick for stomach sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds. The soft foam layers cushion the chest and shoulders. Combined with a coil support core, the soft mattress keeps the hips and abdomen properly supported.

For stomach sleepers who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds, the soft model is not ideal. It only offers fair support, and is likely to be too soft for people in this weight category. Those who carry additional weight in their stomachs and hips may not feel properly supported.

Those who weigh more than 230 pounds and sleep on their stomach need a firmer sleeping surface. The abdomen and hips push into the mattress, which puts pressure on the lower back. This causes the spine to curve, and can result in aches and pains.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

6.5 / 10

BROOKLYN_BEDDING_SPARTAN_MOTIONISO

Soft: 8.5 / 10

Medium: 7 / 10

Firm: 5.5 / 10

BROOKLYN_BEDDING_SPARTAN_MOTIONISO

Multiple layers of foam in the comfort system of the Brooklyn Bedding Spartan Hybrid mattress absorb movements and prevent them from transferring across the bed. This comfort system includes foam that is slow to return to its original shape. This helps the mattress isolate motion exceptionally well. The pocketed coils respond individually, which also minimizes motion transfer.

Generally, hybrid mattresses do not isolate motion as well as a foam mattress might. But since the Spartan Hybrid mattress has a thick foam comfort system, it performs better in this category than the average hybrid.

The soft and medium firmness options utilize softer foams in the comfort system. This allows both mattresses to conform more closely and absorb movement better than the firm mattress. Sleepers may feel their partner get in and out of bed, but smaller movements like shifting or changing positions are less likely to be felt.

Pressure Relief

7 / 10

BROOKLYN_BEDDING_SPARTAN_PRESSURE_SIDE

Soft: 8.5 / 10

Medium: 8.5 / 10

Firm: 7 / 10

BROOKLYN_BEDDING_SPARTAN_PRESSURE_SIDE

The Brooklyn Bedding Spartan mattress is a standout pick for pressure relief. All three models offer thick layers of foam in their comfort system, which helps relieve pressure and cushions sharp areas like the shoulders and hips.

The first layer of foam is responsive and immediately relieves pressure points. The second layer is memory foam that further promotes contouring. The third layer is made of memory foam in the two softer models, while the firm model has a VariFlex polyfoam layer for deep compression support. The pocketed coils in all models are responsive and help keep the spine aligned.

Since there are three firmness options, sleepers can choose how conforming they want the mattress to be. The medium soft option conforms closely, while the medium firm option balances contouring and support. The firm option offers minimal contouring, but ample support. All three firmness levels are highly rated for pressure relief.

Temperature Control

7.5 / 10

BROOKLYN_BEDDING_SPARTAN_HEATCAM_3

Soft: 7 / 10

Medium: 8.5 / 10

Firm: 8.5 / 10

BROOKLYN_BEDDING_SPARTAN_HEATCAM_3

The Spartan Hybrid mattress regulates temperature and prevents the feeling of sleeping hot. Several components within the mattress allow it to perform better than the average hybrid mattress in this category.

The smart cover with Far Infrared Rays technology actively converts body heat into energy. This prevents heat from building up in the cover of the mattress, as it is converted and reflected back for rest and recovery.

The first comfort layer of foam is infused with copper, a highly conductive material meant to draw heat away from the body. The mattress uses memory foam, which tends to retain heat, but the foam is infused with gel to prevent heat from building up. The pocketed coils add airflow throughout the Spartan and dissipate heat.

The pocketed coils add airflow throughout the Spartan Hybrid mattress models and dissipate heat.

It should be noted that the soft option conforms closely, which can reduce the amount of airflow around the body. This gives it a slightly lower rating for temperature control when compared to the medium and firm options.

Edge Support

7.5 / 10

BROOKLYN_BEDDING_SPARTAN_EDGETEST_2

Soft: 3 / 5

Medium: 4 / 5

Firm: 4 / 5

BROOKLYN_BEDDING_SPARTAN_EDGETEST_2

The pocketed coil base of the Spartan Hybrid mattress translates to solid edge support. The thick foam comfort system is resilient, so it bounces back quickly after pressure is applied. This prevents sagging along the edges over time. The latex-like layer of foam is especially buoyant.

The edge support found in the Spartan Hybrid mattress is what we would expect from a hybrid mattress. Those who sleep near the edge of the bed should feel supported. Edge support also makes it easier to get in and out of bed.

The foam in the soft option compresses more easily, so it should be noted that it feels less supportive if you sit on the edge of the bed. The medium and firm options have better edge support.

Ease of Movement

6.5 / 10

Soft: 7 / 10

Medium: 8.5 / 10

Firm: 8.5 / 10

Most hybrid mattresses are known for ease of movement, due to the bounce provided by innerspring coils. The Spartan Hybrid mattress performs well in this category. It is easy to change positions as needed.

The comfort system of the Spartan Hybrid mattress includes buoyant polyfoam, which has a similar feel to latex. This layer bounces back to its original shape quickly and prevents feeling restricted.

The coil base adds ample bounce in each firmness option. This allows combination sleepers to change positions easily throughout the night. It is also an important factor for couples.

The soft Spartan inhibits movement to a certain extent, but the tradeoff is that it has better motion isolation and pressure relief. Those who prioritize ease of movement may want to consider the medium or firm mattress.

Off-Gassing

7 / 10

Off-gassing is to be expected with any mattress that utilizes synthetic foam. This is often intensified by vacuum-sealing and packaging the mattress in plastic.

The Brooklyn Bedding Spartan Hybrid mattress has an initial odor when it is first unboxed. This smell is the result of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are released when the mattress is unwrapped. This is not considered harmful, as the Spartan Hybrid mattress is CertiPUR-US Certified. This means it is low in VOCs and does not include any harmful chemicals in its construction.

The smell should dissipate within a few days. Keeping the bedroom well-ventilated will help.

Brooklyn Bedding Spartan Mattress Review Breakdown

The Brooklyn Bedding Spartan mattress has a 13-inch height, with a smart fabric cover and multiple layers. The hybrid construction includes a foam comfort system and a pocketed coil base.

The smart performance fabric cover of the Spartan mattress uses Far Infrared Technology. This material is designed to draw heat away from the body and convert it into energy, which is reflected back for improved muscle recovery. The cover should not be removed, but can be spot cleaned as needed.

The comfort system of the Spartan has three layers of foam. The first layer is copper-infused polyfoam. This layer relieves pressure points and includes copper. Beneath the copper-infused layer is memory foam, which contours closely to the body and relieves pressure. In the soft and medium models, the third layer is gel-swirl memory foam, which offers deep compression support and additional contouring. In the firm model, the third layer is VariFlex polyfoam, which has a firmer feel than memory foam.

The support core is 8 inches of pocketed coils. The coils are individually encased in order to respond independently to movement and contour to the shape of the body. The coil system is zoned to provide enhanced support where it’s most needed on the body. A high-density polyfoam base reinforces the coils in both models.

There are three options to choose from: soft (4), medium (6), and firm (7). The soft option has what we consider a medium soft feel. The responsive foams conform closely to the shape of the body for ample pressure relief. The medium option has more of a medium firm feel. This firmness balances close contouring with full-body support. The foam layers cushion pressure points and the coil support base helps keep the spine aligned. The firm option has a true firm mattress feel. This option provides ample support and minimal contouring. It should be noted that comfort and firmness are subjective and can be affected by sleeping position and body weight. All three firmness options have the same basic construction.
