Brentwood Home broke into the online mattress industry in 2012 but traces its origins back to 1987. The company’s current lineup includes bedding, bed frames, and other sleep accessories, as well as four mattresses: the Oceano Luxury Hybrid, the Crystal Cove, the Hybrid Latex, and the Cypress Memory Foam.

The Cypress Memory Foam mattress is the budget-friendly offering from Brentwood Home, with a price-point well below most of its competitors. The mattress is an all-foam mattress consisting of charcoal-infused memory foam over polyfoam transitional and base layers. An additional Luxe version has thicker memory foam and polyfoam layers for a softer feel. Both the classic and Luxe models can also be sold as hybrids, replacing the polyfoam base with a pocketed coil support core.

The Cypress Affordable Memory Foam mattress offers distinct advantages for different sleeper types depending on the model. We’ll examine how the construction of each model affects its performance, and what type of sleeper is best suited to each mattress, to help you reach a decision on which Brentwood Home Cypress model is the best mattress for you.

Side Sleepers

The best mattresses for side sleepers ease pressure points in the hips and shoulders, which is why most side sleepers are most comfortable on the Luxe Brentwood Home Cypress mattresses. The thicker comfort layer section in the Luxe mattresses forms a tight hug around the body to alleviate pressure build-up in these areas. In particular, side sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds experience excellent pressure relief from the all-foam Luxe model.

The classic Cypress mattresses lack the same depth in the comfort layers, and won’t provide as much cushioning for the hips and shoulders in side sleepers. That being said, most side sleepers under 230 pounds should experience sufficient pressure relief when sleeping on the classic mattresses. While these mattresses are also soft enough for some side sleepers over 230 pounds, it doesn’t offer enough support to maintain proper spinal alignment in this group.

Back Sleepers

All four models of the Brentwood Home Cypress mattress provide adequate support and pressure relief for most back sleepers. Sleeping on the back naturally aligns the spine and doesn’t create any serious pressure points. The main attribute that back sleepers need in a mattress is lumbar support.

The Cypress mattresses are built with contouring memory foam that fills in the lumbar area, as well as firmer polyfoam to keep the hips from sagging. In the case of the hybrid, pocketed coils push back in targeted areas to keep the spine on an even plane. The only back sleepers who may be uncomfortable on the Cypress are those who weigh more than 230 pounds, as the best mattresses for heavy sleepers tend to be more firm. These sleepers exert more pressure on the mattress and may find that the Classic and Luxe models both fail to provide enough spinal support.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers receive better spinal alignment from the Brentwood Home Cypress Hybrid mattresses. In these models, the pocketed coils supply added support to prevent the hips from sinking out of line with the rest of the body. Stomach sleepers will generally do better with the classic hybrid version, as the thicker comfort layers in the Luxe Hybrid may sag in the midsection.

Stomach sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds also receive sufficient support from the all-foam models, but these models are too soft and may cause back pain in people who weigh more than 130 pounds.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

7 / 10

Brentwood Home Cypress – Classic (11″): / 5

Brentwood Home Cypress – Luxe (13″): / 5

The Luxe models of the Brentwood Home Cypress mattress do a much better job at preventing motion transfer than the classic models. This is due to the thicker comfort layer section, which conforms closely to the body and absorbs movement instead of letting it reverberate across the surface.

While the hybrid Classic and Luxe models have some bounce from the coils, these mattresses perform similarly to their non-hybrid counterparts. The coils are individually wrapped to minimize motion transfer, meaning the comfort layers play a more important role in motion isolation. All four models do a decent job of preventing night time disturbances, but we advise sensitive sleepers to choose either the Luxe or the Luxe Hybrid if they anticipate waking up from their partner’s movements.

Pressure Relief

7 / 10

Brentwood Home Cypress – Classic (11″): / 5

Brentwood Home Cypress – Luxe (13″): / 5

All four versions of the Brentwood Home Cypress mattress include layers of memory foam that contour to relieve pressure points. With their extra comfort layers, the Luxe foam and hybrid models provide a plusher surface and deeper cradle before sleepers reach the firmer base layers.

Side sleepers and those who weigh less than 130 pounds will fare better with the Luxe, which supplies the extra cushioning needed to prevent sore hips and shoulders in these groups. In contrast, stomach sleepers and those who weigh more than 230 pounds will prefer the classic models, as these provide a firmer surface that keeps the spine on an even plane.

Temperature Control

4.5 / 10

Brentwood Home Cypress – Classic (11″): / 5

Brentwood Home Cypress – Luxe (13″): / 5

The Brentwood Home Cypress performs relatively well on temperature neutrality, but hot sleepers may want to look elsewhere.

The memory foam contains charcoal infusions that largely succeed in preventing heat build-up around the body. In addition, the hybrid models allow air to circulate through the coils, thereby dispersing any heat that does get trapped in the mattress. The classic models don’t cradle the body as closely, which leaves room for heat to escape. However, with their thick foam layers, the Luxe and even the Luxe Hybrid will trap a certain amount of heat.

Edge Support

6 / 10

Brentwood Home Cypress – Classic (11″): / 5

Brentwood Home Cypress – Luxe (13″): / 5

Reinforced coils around the perimeter of the bed ensure strong edge support in the Brentwood Home Cypress Hybrid and Hybrid Luxe.

Since the Cypress mattresses only have 1 or 2 inches of memory foam before the firmer transitional layer, the foam models hold up solidly enough when sleeping near the edge of the bed. Most couples should be able to use the full surface of the mattress without experiencing feelings of roll-off. However, some people may find the edges compress when sitting on the edge of the bed. This effect is more pronounced in individuals who weigh more than 230 pounds.

Ease of Movement

4.5 / 10

Memory foam in the top layer of the Brentwood Home Cypress quickly gives way to the firmer polyfoam underneath, which pushes back and allows for easy movement compared to other all-foam mattresses. Despite the thicker comfort layers in the Luxe models, this is true in both the classic and Luxe versions of the mattress. Combination sleepers may prefer the classic hybrid version, which has minimal contouring and a bouncier surface due to the coils.

Off-Gassing

5 / 10

Every foam mattresses off-gasses to some extent when it is first unboxed, and the Brentwood Home Cypress is no exception.

Off-gassing happens as a result of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from polyfoam and memory foam being released into the air. It’s considered harmless, and the smell usually disappears within a few days once it gets a chance to air out. This process should be even quicker in the hybrid models, where the coils allow for greater ventilation.

Brentwood Home Cypress Mattress Review Breakdown

The Brentwood Home Cypress Affordable Memory Foam mattress has 3 layers in total and measures 11 inches tall, which is a standard profile for an all-foam bed. The cover is made of polyester and spandex, with a percentage of wool sewn into the side panels. Brentwood Home recommends cleaning stains with natural ingredients such as baking soda.

The first layer of the mattress has 1 inch of memory foam. This is infused with charcoal, which is meant to help draw away moisture from your body to keep a neutral temperature on the surface of the mattress. The memory foam is made with BioFoam, which includes a percentage of soy-based polypol and is more environmentally friendly than traditional memory foam.

Beneath this top layer is a fairly firm 2-inch polyfoam transitional layer. This layer eases the transition onto the 8-inch high-density polyfoam support core. The support core is contour-cut to provide adaptive support for the spine.

The mattress has a medium firm feel, about a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale. The comfort layers are relatively thin, so the bed will provide some contouring but sleepers mostly stay on top of the mattress instead of sinking in.

Brentwood Home also offers a Luxe version of the Cypress mattress. The Cypress Luxe has 2 inches of charcoal-infused memory foam, 2 inches of the same transitional polyfoam, an extra 1-inch layer of plusher polyfoam to add deeper contouring, and the same contour-cut polyfoam base layer as the original. Thanks to its thicker comfort layer section, the Luxe has a medium feel, or 5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, offering better pressure relief for sleepers under 130 pounds.

It’s also possible to order hybrid versions of the Cypress and the Cypress Luxe. The Classic Hybrid has 2 inches of charcoal-infused memory foam, 1 inch of transitional polyfoam, and an 8-inch pocketed coil support core that rests atop an inch of very firm polyfoam. The Luxe Hybrid has 2 inches of charcoal-infused memory foam, 2 inches of transitional polyfoam, and the same pocketed coil and polyfoam base.

The coils in the hybrid models add bounce, and these mattresses are slightly softer than their respective all-foam counterparts. The edges of the mattress feature 16-gauge coils with a tighter turn and more coils per square foot, and the head and feet have thicker 13.75-gauge coils. Together, these form a reinforced perimeter for better support when sleeping near the edge of the bed.

The Cypress mattress is made in the USA and the company plants three trees through the National Forest Foundation for every mattress sold. The mattress is certified low in emissions by CertiPUR-US and GREENGUARD Gold. The wool and innersprings are OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified as free of harmful substances.
