Our team at Sleep Foundation conducts extensive hands-on tests for each mattress to provide you with the most reliable, data-driven recommendations and reviews. Below are key guidelines that inform our testing methodology:
Our testers lie on the surface of each mattress to evaluate factors such as contouring and support. We also use specialized tools to measure performance criteria like pressure relief, heat retention, and motion isolation.
We test each mattress using various sleep positions to observe whether a mattress is better suited for side, back, or stomach sleeping. We roll around the surface and sit on the edges to gauge ease of movement and perimeter support.
We have tested hundreds of mattresses and bring years of experience in the mattress industry to the test lab. Our testing team covers a wide range of sleep preferences, sleep positions, and body types. This helps us represent as many sleeper types as possible in our reviews.
The hybrid Birch Luxe is a medium firm (6) mattress made from latex, organic wool, and cotton. It stood out in a number of our testing categories, including responsiveness, edge support, and temperature regulation. If you’re seeking top-notch spinal support, this mattress is a good bet.

Birch was founded in 2019 by its parent company, Helix Sleep. While Helix offers a wide range of customizable mattresses and sleep accessories, Birch focuses on sustainably crafted mattresses and bedding products made from natural and organic materials. The brand’s flagship mattress is the Birch, a medium firm hybrid made from natural latex and organic wool batting.
Released in 2021, the Birch Luxe also has a medium firm feel and uses similar materials. As Birch’s top-end mattress, the Luxe offers additional features like an organic cotton Euro-top, organic wool batting, and a pocketed coil core with zoned lumbar support.
We take an in-depth look at the Birch Luxe, highlighting its construction, materials, and performance ratings across a range of categories. We also discuss sizing, pricing, shipping, and warranty information so you can decide if this mattress is the right one for you.

Testing Team Takeaways
To test the Birch Luxe Mattress, we had three people on our testing team take the bed home and test it for one week. Here are their initial observations.

Combination
150 pounds
Sleeps with a noise machine
“Because I’m a combo sleeper, I like a bed that’s equally supportive in every position, and the Birch Luxe totally hits the mark. Plus, it’s easy to switch between my back, side, and stomach.”
Logan Foley
Editorial Director
Side
140 pounds
Has too many dogs in the bed
“Support-wise, the Birch Luxe was a decent fit for me. However, I could have used a teensy bit more cushioning under my hips, which were sore when I woke up.”
Jackson Lindeke
Executive Product Director
Side

Showers before bed
“This bed sleeps exceptionally cool. I never woke up sweating or feeling stifled. I was a little wary that the wool might be too insulating, but it really helped regulate temperature.”

Side Sleepers
With its thick, substantial comfort system, the Birch Luxe performs well for side sleepers in any weight bracket, but it’s especially well-suited to people above 130 pounds. The latex comfort system is designed to allow sleepers to sink in slightly without compromising good sleep posture, and the Euro-top and wool batting add plushness to help alleviate tension throughout the body.
Our testers above 230 pounds said that the latex’s strong pushback minimizes sinkage. While some side sleepers under 130 pounds might prefer a slightly softer model, most should experience sufficient pressure relief.
Back Sleepers
Back sleepers typically need a slightly firmer mattress to distribute body weight and promote healthy spinal alignment. Our back sleeping testers all found that the Birch Luxe gave them a suitable balance of cushioning and support — but like the side sleepers, those over 130 pounds liked it best. The wool and latex cushion the neck and spine but don’t let the shoulders and back to sink too deeply. The sturdy coil system helps boost support in the lumbar region to reduce lower back pressure.
Stomach Sleepers
Stomach sleepers generally require a firmer surface to keep the spine on an even plane. The Birch Luxe offers an adequate firmness level for most stomach sleepers, but in keeping with the trend, our testers over 130 pounds found it more comfortable than those under 130 pounds.
Although the Birch Luxe is medium firm, latex doesn’t hug the body as much as memory foam so stomach sleepers shouldn’t get the trapped in a bed feeling that can accompany foam. The coil core adds another level of responsiveness and support to help sleepers stay on top of the mattress.
Performance Ratings
In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.
Motion Isolation
6.5
/ 10
“Compared to hybrids with foam, this is a pretty bouncy bed, but it’s on-par with other latex mattresses. If you’re a very light sleeper, it may transfer too much movement, but it’s not too noticeable for most people.” – Jackson
Any mattress with springs inevitably transfers some motion, which is why all-foam models typically outperform hybrids in this category. Latex is bouncier than foam, so the Birch Luxe Mattress isn’t as effective at curbing movement when compared to hybrids with foam comfort systems.
Couples who wake easily may experience sleep disruptions when the other partner shifts positions or gets in and out of bed. That said, because it’s made with individually wrapped coils, the Luxe shouldn’t create as much motion transfer as a traditional innerspring mattress.
Pressure Relief
7
/ 10
“The latex and zoned support system work together to evenly distribute weight, which helps with relieving pressure. It doesn’t hug the body, though, so if you like a close-conforming bed, this might not be the right pick.” – Brad
The Birch Luxe offers a moderate amount of pressure relief. The latex contours somewhat, but the mattress is firm enough to help evenly distribute body weight and encourage a straighter spine. Side sleepers and those who weigh less than 130 pounds might prefer a softer model with more cushioning. People over 130 pounds of any sleep position should experience notable contouring and adequate support.
Temperature Control
9
/ 10
“Our temperature tests detected very little heat retention, even after applying a hot water bottle directly to the bed’s surface. This one is a good bet for people who sleep warm.” – Mary
Hybrids are typically better at regulating temperature than all-foam mattresses, as foam tends to trap heat. The Birch Luxe regulates temperature exceptionally well. The cover and comfort system use naturally breathable materials, including cotton and wool, to help draw heat and moisture away from the body. When compared to memory foam, natural latex has an airier structure that resists heat buildup. Plus, the pocketed spring support core also offers space for air to circulate.
Edge Support
9
/ 10
“The extra-strong perimeter coils go a long way toward enhancing this bed’s edge support. If you need an extra boost when getting in and out of bed, this one might be a good fit.” – Jeremy
The Birch Luxe features a hefty coil core that’s designed to minimize sagging throughout the mattress. Heavier gauge coils along the perimeter provide extra reinforcement, delivering above-average edge support.
Edge support is important for sleepers who share the bed or those who gravitate to the side of the mattress while sleeping. A mattress with a less sturdy perimeter can cause sleepers to feel like they’re rolling off the bed. Strong edge support results in more usable mattress space.
Ease of Movement
9
/ 10
“Latex is made from the same trees that rubber comes from, so it has a similar bouncy quality. The latex and coils give this bed an even sleep surface that’s responsive, not restrictive.” – Logan
The Birch Luxe’s construction makes it easy for sleepers to move around on its surface. Latex is notable for its responsiveness, which is helpful when changing sleeping positions. The coil support system also makes getting in and out of bed easier. The medium firm (6) feel of the bed doesn’t compress significantly, preventing the feeling of being trapped in the bed.
Off-Gassing
9
/ 10
“This bed really doesn’t have much of a smell after you unwrap it, especially compared to beds with foam.” – Colin
New mattresses can emit an unpleasant but relatively harmless odor known as off-gassing, which happens when volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are released into the air. Products made from foam or synthetic latex usually have the strongest odors, while natural latex and fabrics like cotton and wool emit minimal odors.
The Birch Luxe’s off-gassing is fairly subtle, due to its ventilated latex and natural materials. Any odors should disappear within a day or so of unpacking the mattress, or sooner if the mattress is placed in a well-ventilated room. The Birch Luxe carries OEKO-TEX certification, which indicates that it has been tested and found free of harmful substances.
The medium firm (6) Birch Luxe is a hybrid that combines a robust comfort system with a coil support core. An organic cotton Euro-top cover with a matelassé finish gives the surface a woven, quilt-like feel with padded pressure relief. The cotton is certified organic by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS).
The mattress’ comfort system features layers of organic wool and rayon batting. Naturally breathable and moisture-wicking, these layers add softness without conforming too closely to the body. Wool and rayon are also flame-retardant, so the fibers act as a natural fire barrier.
The comfort system’s main component is a layer of natural latex that provides moderate contouring and pressure point relief. The latex is certified by the Rainforest Alliance, OEKO-TEX, and Forest Stewardship Council, indicating that it meets strict environmental and safety standards.
The breathable coil core adds responsiveness and allows sleepers to move more freely. Individually wrapped coils cut down on motion transfer and make less noise than traditional innerspring coils. The zoning provides strong pushback in the lumbar region, and there are sturdier coils along the edges to minimize sagging.
Rounding out the support core is a layer of wool and rayon batting, which serves as an additional fire barrier. In total the mattress stands at 11.5 inches, which is considered average.
