Testing Team Takeaways
To test the Beautyrest Hybrid Mattress, we had three people on our testing team each take the bed home with them for one week. Here are their initial observations.

Side sleeper

Talks in sleep (like a lot)
The Beautyrest Select Hybrid checked just about all of the important boxes for me as a side sleeper. It felt balanced and comfortable with good support for my hips and shoulders.
Mary Fenton
Head of Product Content
Combo sleeper

Sleeps with a noise machine
While the softest model was too plush for me, I found that the medium firm and firm models were more supportive. It was also easier to move around on the firmer models, which helped when I wanted to switch between sleeping positions.
Brad Nehring
Senior Product Analyst
Side sleeper
215 lbs.
Sleeps with a weighted blanket
I thought that the Beautyrest Select was solid across the board but didn’t really shine in any one category. The performance varies quite a bit depending on the firmness level, so it’s important to pick the model that matches your needs and preferences.

Side Sleepers
Our testing found that the Beautyrest Select Hybrid can be a solid fit for most side sleepers, although the optimal firmness varies by body weight.
Side sleepers need a mattress that can minimize impact against their shoulders and hips while, at the same time, avoiding excessive sinkage that can interfere with spinal alignment.
For side sleepers up to 230 pounds, the medium soft (4) and medium firm (6) models offered the best results. For those who weigh more than 230 pounds, the firm (7) model was the only one that resisted bothersome sinkage.
Back Sleepers
Based on our testing, the firm (7) Beautyrest Select Hybrid is supportive for the majority of back sleepers. Some back sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds preferred the slightly softer medium firm (6) option.
When lying on your back, it’s important that your mattress provides an even surface so that your spine can remain in a neutral position. On softer models of the Select Hybrid, back sleepers in our testing tended to experience too much sinkage around their midsection. However, the firm (7) version provided a good mix of stability and light cushioning for the lumbar spine.
Stomach Sleepers
Among stomach sleepers, the best ratings were awarded to the firm (7) Beautyrest Select Hybrid. While many said that the mattress provided adequate support, some felt that there was still too much contouring from the memory foam to truly maximize their comfort.
Like back sleepers, stomach sleepers need a flat and even sleep surface. This prevents their midsection from sinking into the mattress and causing spinal misalignment.
The medium soft (4) and medium firm (6) models were too plush for most back sleepers in our testing, but the firm (7) version provided more stability and spinal support.
Mattress Performance
In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.
Motion Isolation
7
/ 10
Plush: 8 / 10
Medium: 7.5 / 10
Firm: 6 / 10
“On the firmer models, you can definitely notice some vibration from a bed partner’s movement, but there’s very little motion transfer on the plush model.” – Colin
Our testing team gave strong ratings for motion isolation to the medium soft (4) version of the Beautyrest Select Hybrid and considerably lower ratings for the firm (7) model.
The springs in the base of the mattress generate bounce, some of which is absorbed by the memory foam at the top of the bed. The more you sink into the memory foam, the less likely you are to notice movement on the other side of the mattress.
For most couples, the Select Hybrid has sufficient motion isolation, but people who are easily awoken may have some sleep disruptions on the firmer versions.
Pressure Relief
7.5
/ 10
Plush: 8 / 10
Medium: 7 / 5
Firm: 7 / 10
“On all of the models of the Select Hybrid, the memory foam layers cradle the heaviest parts of the body to reduce pressure buildup.” – Mary
During our testing, the Select Hybrid earned solid marks for pressure relief. Many sleepers felt that the highest degree of pressure relief came from the medium soft (4) and medium firm (6) models since they more closely contour to the body.
That deep hug tends to be more meaningful for side sleepers and people who have sharp pressure points near their joints. Back and stomach sleepers often get better support from a firmer surface with less contouring.
Temperature Control
6.5
/ 10
Plush: 6 / 10
Medium: 7.5 / 10
Firm: 8 / 10
“The Beautyrest Select has some design elements that are meant to reduce heat buildup, and they definitely cut down on overheating, especially on the two firmer models.” – Brad
We found that there was much more heat buildup on the medium soft (4) Select Hybrid than on the other two models.
When you sink deeply into memory foam, it can trap heat around your skin, especially as the foam itself starts to warm up. That drives increased heat retention on the plush model of the Select Hybrid.
While there can be some warmth that collects in the firmer versions of this mattress, it’s unlikely to affect most sleepers. However, hot sleepers may be wary about getting too hot on the Select Hybrid or any other mattress with thick layers of memory foam.
Edge Support
6.5
/ 10
Plush: 6 / 10
Medium: 7 / 10
Firm: 7.5 / 10
“I felt that the edge support was a bit subpar for a hybrid mattress. You can feel quite a bit more compression and sinkage when you apply weight to the edge of the mattress.” – Colin
While the edges of the Select Hybrid weren’t unstable, they lacked the robust feel that you find around the perimeter of many hybrid mattresses.
When sitting or sleeping near the edge, you can feel the memory foam layers compress under your body. There’s some pushback from the springs, but the perimeter still feels noticeably weaker than the center of the mattress.
The lack of edge support is most pronounced on the medium soft (4) model. However, unless you really depend on a very firm perimeter, this issue is unlikely to dramatically affect your satisfaction with the Beautyrest Select Hybrid.
Ease of Movement
6
/ 10
Plush: 5.5 / 10
Medium: 6 / 10
Firm: 7.5 / 10
“As a combination sleeper, I would have liked for it to be easier to move around on this mattress. But the ease of movement was sufficient, especially on the firmest models.” – Mary
The memory foam in the top layers of the Beautyrest Select Hybrid contours to the body, which can make it more difficult to adjust your position on the mattress. There is deeper contouring on the medium soft (4) model, so it received a lower rating in this category.
Ease of movement matters most to combination sleepers and others who like to frequently adjust their sleep posture. For these sleepers, the firm (7) model is best at facilitating movement.
Off-Gassing
8
/ 10
“There’s a very faint new mattress smell, but you have to put your nose close to the mattress to detect it.” – Brad
Beautyrest provides White Glove delivery for every Select Hybrid, so this mattress doesn’t get compressed and shrink-wrapped like many other online mattresses. As a result, when it arrives at your home, it has already had time to air out, reducing any off-gassing or new mattress smell.
The Beautyrest Select Hybrid is 13 inches tall and constructed with a combination of different materials. It comes in three firmness options, each of which has a very similar design.
In all three designs, the cover is made with a breathable and stretchy knit fabric. Beneath the cover, the top two layers feature memory foam, which is known for its ability to adapt to the body’s weight and posture in order to cushion joints and other pressure points. One of these memory foam layers is infused with a gel designed to resist heat retention.
Beneath the memory foam is a transitional layer of polyfoam that is firmer and helps reduce sinkage. The firm (7) model has two layers of this transitional polyfoam. The base of the mattress contains pocketed metal coils that give the mattress more stability and responsiveness.
