Our team at Sleep Foundation conducts extensive hands-on tests for each mattress to provide you with the most reliable, data-driven recommendations and reviews. Below are key guidelines that inform our testing methodology:
Our testers lie on the surface of each mattress to evaluate factors such as contouring and support. We also use specialized tools to measure performance criteria like pressure relief, heat retention, and motion isolation.
We test each mattress using various sleep positions to observe whether a mattress is better suited for side, back, or stomach sleeping. We roll around the surface and sit on the edges to gauge ease of movement and perimeter support.
We have tested hundreds of mattresses and bring years of experience in the mattress industry to the test lab. Our testing team covers a wide range of sleep preferences, sleep positions, and body types. This helps us represent as many sleeper types as possible in our reviews.
Eco-friendly construction with sustainable materials sets the Avocado Eco Organic Mattress apart from other hybrid models on the market. Durable latex and sturdy pocketed coils provide strong support and spinal alignment.

I generally try my best to be as eco-conscious as possible with my purchases, and as a result I really appreciate the quality materials used to construct the Avocado Eco Organic Mattress. I can rest easier knowing that the little details have been considered.

The Avocado Eco Organic is surprisingly soft for a latex mattress but also very responsive. That said, you don’t get the cozy, plush feel that you would with a quilted foam surface.

Always sleeps under a weighted blanket
With the Eco Organic, you get that strong surface bounce that’s common with latex hybrids. This level of responsiveness isn’t for everyone, but as a bigger guy who frequently changes sleep positions, I appreciate the extra push to keep my body aloft and upright.

Side Sleepers
The Avocado Eco Organic Mattress performs well for side sleepers over 130 pounds. In our testing, the cotton, wool, and latex provided essential cushioning and light contouring around the hips and shoulders. This helped side sleepers maintain a healthier spinal posture without troublesome twisting or bending.
The coils provide a sturdy base that resists sinkage, which is especially important for sleepers over 230 pounds. However, some side sleepers under 130 pounds may find that there’s not quite enough contouring or softness in the Eco Organic Mattress to fully cushion their pressure points.
Back Sleepers
The Avocado Eco Organic Mattress comfortably supports most back sleepers. The coils and latex are robust enough to prevent sinkage around the midsection, but they provide enough contouring to accommodate the natural curvature of the lumbar spine.
In our testing, this mattress earned high marks from back sleepers of all weights. That said, some back sleepers under 130 pounds may prefer a touch more softness, and some weighing more than 230 pounds may want a firmer option.
Stomach Sleepers
During the evaluation of this mattress in our sleep lab, stomach sleepers liked the feel of the Avocado Eco Organic Mattress. The pushback from the latex and coils kept the mattress from sagging around the abdomen, which enabled stomach sleepers to avoid spinal misalignment.
Some stomach sleepers over 230 pounds do best with a firm or extra firm mattress, making the medium firm (6) Avocado Eco Organic a bit on the soft side. However, our findings show that most stomach sleepers get quality support from the sturdiness and responsiveness of this mattress.
Mattress Performance
In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.
Motion Isolation
6
/ 10
Not surprisingly, the Eco Organic struggles with motion isolation. Light sleepers who share their bed with a partner might have a hard time getting a full night’s rest. – Brad
As with most latex hybrids, the Avocado Eco Organic Mattress transfers a fair amount of motion across the bed. This happens because of the bounciness of both latex and the coils. While Avocado has designed these materials to reduce vibrations, our testing team found that there was still noticeable motion transfer.
For many bed partners, the vibrations won’t be bothersome enough to disrupt their sleep. But for light sleepers who are easily awakened, a latex hybrid like the Avocado Eco Organic may not be the optimal mattress type.
Pressure Relief
6.5
/ 10
If you need deep cushioning to reduce pressure buildup in your most sensitive spots, the Eco Organic might not be plush enough. However, people who prefer light contouring should be satisfied with this mattress. – Brad
With a comfort system measuring just over 2 inches, the Avocado Eco Organic Mattress delivers average pressure relief. The wool quilting, Dunlop latex, and pocketed coils combine to provide moderate contouring that cushions areas where the sleeper makes the most contact with the mattress.
These qualities allow the Eco Organic Mattress to provide enough pressure relief for most people. But sleepers with sharp pressure points or who want to be closely hugged by their mattress may get better results from a material like memory foam.
Temperature Control
8.5
/ 10
As a hot sleeper, I appreciated the Avocado Eco Organic’s breathable natural materials. The organic cotton, wool, and latex layers work together to wick away heat and enhance the airflow through the coil layer. – Danny
The Avocado Eco Organic Mattress excels at temperature control. Latex naturally resists heat retention, and both cotton and wool are breathable and wick away moisture. In the support core, pocketed coils allow ample room for ventilation to cool the mattress down.
In addition, because sleepers don’t sink into the mattress, air can flow around the skin to stop overheating. All of these aspects of the Eco Organic Mattress make it an ideal choice for hot sleepers.
Edge Support
7.5
/ 10
The Avocado Eco Organic has top-notch sturdiness along the edges, so you can truly use every inch of the surface without fear of rolling off. It’s a nice contrast to some all-foam beds I’ve tried, which I always feel like I’m about to roll off of. – Jackson
The Avocado Eco Organic Mattress offers above-average edge support, largely due to the reinforced perimeter in the support core. The latex layer also has enough pushback and resilience to prevent excessive sinking around the edge.
Edge support makes it easier to get in and out of bed, and it provides a sense of security when sitting or sleeping near the outside part of the mattress. Strong edge support is also appealing for couples since it lets them take advantage of the full surface area of the mattress.
Ease of Movement
8.5
/ 10
The springy latex and pocketed coils make movement very easy on this bed. I never felt stuck or trapped while moving around. – Danny
Resilient Dunlop latex and bouncy pocketed coils give the Eco Organic Mattress a highly responsive surface that permits easy movement on the bed. According to our testing team, there was absolutely no “quicksand” feeling that can arise on foam mattresses.
Ease of movement is an important characteristic if you are a combination sleeper and want to change positions during the night without annoying resistance from your mattress. The resilience of the Eco Organic Mattress is also beneficial if you dislike feeling stuck in place when lying in bed.
Off-Gassing
8.5
/ 10
The Avocado Eco Organic definitely had a smell after I unboxed it. I wouldn’t necessarily call it unpleasant – my son likened it to vanilla. It stuck around for about a week but disappeared over time. – Jackson
As a latex hybrid made from natural and organic materials, the Avocado Eco Organic Mattress does not off-gas in the way that most mattresses do. This is because it does not have synthetic foams or adhesives that often emit a chemical smell.
That isn’t to say the Eco Organic Mattress is completely free of odors. Our testers noticed a faint rubbery smell from the latex right after unboxing, but it wasn’t bothersome and dissipated quickly.
The Avocado Eco Organic Mattress is a 10-inch-tall latex hybrid. Its exterior is an organic cotton cover quilted with organic wool. This responsive, breathable cover wicks away moisture and is intended to keep you cool and dry.
Beneath this, a 2-inch layer of organic Dunlop latex generates responsiveness and moderate pressure relief. Latex is a durable material that sleeps cooler than synthetic foams. The latex is also aerated with tiny holes to increase airflow.
The final layer is an 8-inch pocketed coil support core made with recycled steel. A reinforced perimeter boosts edge support, and a firmer zone in the center of the mattress is intended to add support for the lumbar area.
All of the textiles used in the Avocado Eco Organic Mattress are certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), and the latex is certified by the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS). The mattress boasts a handful of other certifications for being environmentally friendly and free of harmful chemicals, and, as a company, Avocado demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainability and climate neutrality.
