Aviya is a direct-to-consumer mattress company that was founded in 2014. Today, the company sells two products: a foundation and the Aviya Mattress.

While Aviya does not produce a diverse range of mattress models, customers aren’t left without options. The Aviya Mattress comes in three firmness options to suit different body types and sleep styles. Each mattress uses a combination of foam and pocketed coils. Depending on who you ask, it could be classified as either an innerspring or a hybrid model. However, we consider it a hybrid model.

This review will cover the Aviya’s construction, performance, pricing, customer reviews, and important policies. It will also highlight some of the key differences between the firmness options so that you can make a more informed decision as to which option is best for you.

Answer a few questions to find the right mattress for your unique needs

Sleeping Style and Body Weight

Side Sleepers

Thanks to its three firmness options, most side sleepers should be able to find a version of the Aviya Mattress with the right balance of contouring and support. Side sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds are likely to prefer the Plush version of the mattress, while those who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds may favor the Luxury Firm option. People who weigh more than 230 pounds will likely sleep best on the Luxury Firm, though they may opt for the Firm depending on whether they prefer plushness or extra support.

When sleeping on the ideal firmness for them, side sleepers will enjoy cushioning and moderate contouring from the quilted cover and two comfort layers. This can help relieve some of the pressure that tends to build up near their hips and shoulders. The transition layer gives deeper cradling, while the pocketed coil core provides support to help prevent a side sleeper’s hips and shoulders from sinking in excessively.

If side sleepers select a version of the Aviya Mattress that is too soft for them, their hips and shoulders may sink in against the coil core, which may reduce the amount of pressure relief they experience. Maintaining proper spinal alignment could also be difficult on a mattress that is too soft. Side sleepers with an Aviya Mattress that is too firm for their body type may not sink in as much as ideal, so they might not enjoy as much contouring and pressure relief.

Back Sleepers

The Aviya’s construction tends to perform exceptionally well for back sleepers of different weights. Those who weigh under 130 pounds may enjoy the Luxury Firm version of the bed. Back sleepers who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds are also likely to prefer the Luxury Firm option. Individuals who weigh more than 230 pounds might prefer the Firm version.

The Aviya Mattress has a thinner comfort system than some hybrids, so back sleepers shouldn’t sink in too deeply when lying on the best firmness option for their body type. The two layers of polyfoam give some cushioning, and the polyfoam transition layer and the coil core provide support to promote optimal spinal alignment.

None of Aviya’s firmness options should be excessively firm for any weight group since back sleepers tend to prefer a somewhat firmer option to help them maintain their natural spinal alignment. When sleeping on an Aviya Mattress that is too soft for them, some back sleepers may experience sagging near their hips that puts pressure on their lumbar region.

Stomach Sleepers

Regardless of their weight, most stomach sleepers are likely to get the best support from the Firm version of the mattress. Its two layers of polyfoam give some cushioning, but its polyfoam transition layer and coil core limit sagging near the sleeper’s hips to help them maintain proper spinal alignment. The Luxury Firm version of the mattress also tends to perform well for stomach sleepers from all weight groups. The Plush is likely too soft to meet the needs of any stomach sleepers.

Since people often carry much of their weight near their midsection, they usually need a firm enough mattress to prevent this heavier region from sinking in too far. When sleeping on an Aviya Mattress that is too soft for them, a stomach sleeper’s hips and belly may dip too deeply into the mattress and put their spine out of alignment. None of the Aviya Mattress’s firmness options should be significantly too firm for most stomach sleepers, but some individuals might prefer a bit more plushness.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

6.5 / 10

Aviya Mattress – Firm: / 5

Aviya Mattress – Luxury Firm: / 5

Aviya Mattress – Plush: / 5

A hybrid mattress’s comfort system is generally responsible for the vast majority of its motion isolation. The Aviya Mattress’s comfort system consists of a quilted cover and two 1-inch layers of polyfoam. Since this is thinner than the comfort systems of many hybrid models, the Aviya may transfer a bit more motion than some hybrid mattresses on the market.

The coil core gives the bed a springy feel, but it can also contribute to motion transfer. Each coil is pocketed, which limits the spread of motion to an extent. The polyfoam comfort system also helps dampen movement. However, individuals who awaken easily when their partner moves may still notice more vibrations than they’d like. This is particularly true of the Luxury Firm and Firm versions of the mattress. Thanks to its softer foam, the Plush option should better absorb vibrations.

Pressure Relief

7.5 / 10

Aviya Mattress – Firm: / 5

Aviya Mattress – Luxury Firm: / 5

Aviya Mattress – Plush: / 5

Most hybrid mattresses also get their pressure-relieving properties from their comfort systems. Due to the Aviya’s relatively thin comfort system, it may not relieve as much pressure as some hybrid models.

The quilted cover and two 1-inch polyfoam comfort layers cushion the surface and provide moderate conforming. While this takes some of the pressure off of a sleeper’s hips and shoulders, many individuals may still notice pressure buildup.

Weight, sleep position, and mattress firmness are also contributing factors. Side sleepers are usually particularly prone to pressure points because of the width of their hips and shoulders. People who weigh under 230 are likely to experience the most pressure buildup when sleeping on their sides on the Firm version of the mattress. When a side sleeper who weighs over 230 pounds lies on the Plush version of the mattress, the foam could overcompress and provide minimal cushioning and pressure relief.

While it may not be ideal for some people who weigh over 230 pounds, we would generally expect the Plush version to offer superior pressure relief for most sleepers due to its softer polyfoam.

Temperature Control

7 / 10

Aviya Mattress – Firm: / 5

Aviya Mattress – Luxury Firm: / 5

Aviya Mattress – Plush: / 5

The Aviya Mattress sleeps cooler than some hybrid models, so most people should stay cool and dry on the mattress.

Several features contribute to this temperature control. The cotton fabric used for the cover is breathable enough to let air circulate into the mattress. Since the comfort system is relatively thin, it doesn’t hug the body and trap heat like some mattresses. Additionally, polyfoam tends to be more breathable than memory foam because of its open cell structure. The coil layer also allows significant air circulation so that more heat can escape.

The Luxury Firm and Firm versions of the mattress have the strongest temperature regulation. While the Plush version also performs well, the softer foam comfort system lets sleepers sink in a little more, which could contribute to slight heat retention.

Edge Support

7 / 10

Aviya Mattress – Firm: / 5

Aviya Mattress – Luxury Firm: / 5

Aviya Mattress – Plush: / 5

Like many hybrid models, the Aviya has reinforced edges to make the perimeter of the bed more supportive. Because of their firmer feels, the Luxury Firm and Firm versions of the bed have a sturdier edge than some hybrid models. The Plush version’s edges don’t feel quite as supportive as the firmer models, but they are similar to many other hybrid mattresses.

The Aviya Mattress gets its edge support from a 3-inch thick layer of polyfoam that wraps around the perimeter of the bed. This extra firm foam limits sinkage when an individual sits or sleeps close to the edge of the bed, thereby expanding how much of the mattress surface sleepers can comfortably use.

Ease of Movement

6 / 10

Aviya Mattress – Firm: / 5

Aviya Mattress – Luxury Firm: / 5

Aviya Mattress – Plush: / 5

Sleepers won’t sink into the Aviya as deeply as they would on some hybrid mattresses because of its relatively thin comfort system. The bed has bounce but not a lot of hug, so most sleepers shouldn’t feel like their movement is restricted. This makes the Aviya easier to move and change positions on than some hybrid models.

Off-Gassing

6.5 / 10

Aviya Mattress – Firm: / 5

Aviya Mattress – Luxury Firm: / 5

Aviya Mattress – Plush: / 5

Because of their breathable design, hybrid mattresses often don’t off-gas as much as all-foam models. The Aviya is similar to many other hybrids. While there may be some initial odor left over from the manufacturing process used to make the polyfoam, this odor is unlikely to be very strong. The Aviya’s breathable coil core should also help any smells dissipate fairly quickly.

If you want to air out your mattress before using it, you can leave it in a well-ventilated room until you can’t detect any odor. This generally takes between a few hours and a few days. We wouldn’t expect the Aviya to have any long-term, lingering odors.

Aviya Mattress Review Breakdown

The Aviya Mattress comes in three firmness options, which Aviya identifies as Plush, Luxury Firm, and Firm. The Plush option rates around three on the 10-point firmness scale, giving it a soft feel. With a rating of 6, the Luxury Firm can be considered medium firm. The Firm is a truly firm option, coming at a 7.

Each firmness option uses the same basic construction. A cotton cover allows air to circulate into the mattress, while a thin layer of foam quilted into the cover adds cushioning. The comfort system uses two 1-inch layers of 1.8 (pounds per cubic foot) PCF polyfoam. This high-density polyfoam shapes to the sleeper’s body to help relieve pressure points, but it is also engineered to spring back to its original shape quickly and resist long-term indentations. Additionally, polyfoam tends to retain less heat than memory foam.

Next, a 1-inch transition layer of polyfoam separates the softer comfort system from the firmer support core.

The Aviya’s core is made up of an 8-inch layer of coils that rest on a 1-inch polyfoam base. These coils are pocketed to limit motion transfer by allowing them to move independently. Sturdier coils near the middle of the mattress bolster lumbar support. The coil system also gives the bed bounce, while the polyfoam base gives the coils the support they need. A 3-inch layer of firm polyfoam wraps around the perimeter of the bed to reinforce the edge.
