Airweave is an innovative mattress company based in Japan. The brand was founded in 2007 by Stanford School of Engineering graduate Motokuni Takaoka, who first developed a mattress topper after taking over his uncle’s fishing line company.

Takaoka realized that the resin fiber used in fishing lines could be applied to mattresses, which prompted him to create the airfiber material that is used in airweave’s toppers and mattresses. This distinctive material is made of BPA-free polyethylene, which is lightweight, durable, and recyclable.

The New airweave Mattress has a low 8-inch profile and rates an 8 out of 10 on the firmness scale for a true firm feel. The airfiber is also washable and temperature neutral, which may make this mattress a good choice for sleepers who struggle with allergies or for those who tend to overheat.

To help you decide if the New airweave is the best mattress for your needs, we will examine the construction, materials, performance, and company policies. We will also outline some important considerations to keep in mind when comparing this bed to other options on the market.

Side Sleepers

Side sleepers tend to place considerable pressure on their shoulders and hips. To avoid pain in these areas, sleepers who prefer this position typically require a mattress that provides contouring pressure relief.

The best mattresses for side sleepers conform closely to the body to relieve pressure. While the New airweave Mattress helps encourage spinal alignment, it does not conform closely enough for most side sleepers. The firmer surface may lead to pressure buildup for these sleepers, particularly those who weigh under 230 pounds.

Back Sleepers

The New airweave Mattress is suitable for back sleepers, particularly those who weigh over 230 pounds.

Most back sleepers benefit from a bed that provides firmer support, with just enough cushion to relieve pressure from the lower back. Mattresses without adequate support may allow the hips to sink, which can cause pain or discomfort over time. On the other hand, beds that are too firm may lead to pressure buildup at key contact points with the mattress.

Back sleepers often struggle to find a bed that is firm enough to keep the spine properly aligned. While the New airweave Mattress may be too firm for those who weigh under 130 pounds, most back sleepers over 230 pounds receive sufficient support and cushioning. The best mattresses for heavy sleepers tend to be pretty firm.

Stomach Sleepers

The New airweave Mattress performs exceptionally well for most stomach sleepers.

Stomach sleepers typically require the firmest sleep surface. Sleeping face-down on a mattress that is too plush can cause the midsection to sink, placing excessive strain on the neck and spine.

In the New airweave Mattress, the durable structure of the airfiber prevents sleepers from sinking too deeply into the mattress. This is ideal for stomach sleepers over 130 pounds, although those who weigh less than 130 pounds may prefer a bed with more cushion

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

3.5 / 10

Because the New airweave Mattress does not conform very closely to the body, the mattress does a poor job of isolating movement to the immediate area. This may result in felt motion on the other side of the bed.

Motion isolation may be an important consideration for couples who are sensitive to each other’s movements. Materials that conform to the body can help absorb motion to make it less noticeable when a sleep partner rolls over or gets out of bed.

Pressure Relief

5 / 10

The New airweave Mattress is a compact bed with minimal cushioning, and some sleepers may experience pressure buildup.

Areas that come in contact with the bed, such as the hips and shoulders, tend to sustain considerable pressure throughout the night. Many mattresses incorporate layers of contouring materials to cushion these spots.

With its emphasis on firmer materials, the New airweave mattress lacks the typical comfort system of an all-foam mattress. The optional pillow-top adds some padding, but it may not be sufficient for those seeking enhanced pressure relief.

Temperature Control

8 / 10

Thanks to the airfiber’s ventilated design, the New airweave Mattress provides sleepers with above-average temperature regulation. The unique material encourages airflow, which helps dissipate heat.

Overheating can be uncomfortable and lead to poor sleep quality. Solid foam mattresses generally perform less well at temperature regulation, as they have limited room for airflow. The New airweave Mattress is engineered to fight this problem with its highly breathable construction.

Edge Support

9.5 / 10

The New airweave Mattress offers excellent edge support. The firm airfiber resists excessive compression, even around the perimeter of the bed.

Beds that are stronger around the perimeter can help prevent sleepers from feeling as though they are slipping off the edge of the bed. Edge support may also be useful for sleepers who rely on the edges of the bed to get on or off the mattress.

Ease of Movement

9.5 / 10

The New airweave Mattress has a resilient surface that facilitates movement on top of the bed.

Ease of movement may be an important consideration for combination sleepers or individuals with mobility issues. With a firm feel that keeps sleepers on as opposed to in the mattress, most sleepers should have no problems switching sleeping positions on this bed.

Off-Gassing

8 / 10

Many new mattresses are accompanied by a distinct chemical-like odor caused by volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These are not considered to be harmful, but they can be bothersome to those who are sensitive to smell. Mattresses containing polyurethane foam tend to have stronger off-gassing odors.

The polyethylene used in the Airfiber does not typically expel a strong scent. Any odors present should diffuse within a few days.

Airweave Mattress Review Breakdown

The New airweave Mattress is 8 inches tall and is considered firm, or an 8 out of 10 with 10 being the firmest. This keeps sleepers firmly on top of the bed, rather than sinking into it. Sleepers can choose to use the included (but optional) polyester pillow-top for added cushioning.

The body of the mattress is made entirely using airweave’s proprietary airfiber material. Unlike foam, airfiber does not contour closely to the body, given the mattress a resilient feel.

Airfiber is made using interwoven polyethylene fibers, with ample airflow designed to help the bed remain cool throughout the night. The temperature neutrality of the airfiber is enhanced by the soft polyester and modacrylic cover, which can be removed and machine washed.

Unlike most mattresses, the inner components of the New airweave Mattress can also be hand washed with mild soap and water, helping keep the bed free of contaminants such as skin cells and dust. This can make the bed a good choice for individuals who suffer from allergies.

Airfiber is recyclable, and it requires less energy to produce compared to typical polyfoams.

New Airweave Mattress Sizes

The mattress is sold in all six standard sizes, and shipped in three pieces that must be attached using the zippered cover. Replacement parts can be purchased, so there is no need to replace the whole mattress if just one section has body impressions.

With a lightweight construction and a profile that’s lower than average, the mattress is designed to be easy to move and store when not in use. Since the mattress is made of uniform airfiber, it can be flipped or rotated to extend its longevity.

Trial, Warranty, and Shipping Policies

Availability

The New airweave Mattress is available for purchase through the airweave website and select third-party retailers. Shoppers can try out the mattress at a showroom in New York.

Shipping

Airweave provides free shipping to addresses in the contiguous United States. The company does not currently ship mattresses to Alaska, Hawaii, or Canada.

Orders ship via USPS, FedEx, or UPS and typically arrive within 7 business days. King and California king size mattresses may take longer, as these are sent by freight.

The New airweave Mattress ships in three parts. Setup involves laying out the mattress cover and inner liner and placing the three parts on top. Customers can choose to add the mattress topper if they wish before zipping up the outer cover. Because the bed is not compressed for delivery, it can be slept on right away.

Additional Services

Airweave offers White Glove delivery for a $40 fee. With this service, a technician will deliver and install the mattress for you.

Shoppers can also add old mattress removal for an additional $125 fee. This service is free for California residents.

Sleep Trial

Airweave offers a 100-night sleep trial for mattresses purchased directly from the company, but requests that shoppers keep the bed for a minimum of 30 nights to give their body enough time to adjust to the new mattress.

Returns are free between the 30th and 100th night. Before the 30th night, Airweave charges a $150 service fee. Shoppers who wish to exchange their mattress for another model should contact Airweave to arrange a return and a new purchase.

Warranty

The New airweave Mattress is backed by a 10-year limited warranty for customers in the contiguous U.S. The warranty does not protect against normal wear or damages caused by abuse or misuse, such as burns and tears. Shoppers are responsible for using the mattress with a properly supportive foundation.

Covered defects include visible indentations greater than 1 inch, cracking or splitting of the airfiber, and manufacturing flaws in the cover. Airweave will cover shipping fees associated with the first repair or replacement. As the New airweave Mattress is shipped in three parts, Airweave may elect to replace only the section that is defective. Shoppers can also choose to upgrade to a different mattress by paying the difference.
