Zinus and Casper are mattress-in-a-box companies specializing in all-foam and hybrid mattresses. Both are well established, with Zinus introducing its first bedding products in 2004 and Casper launching in 2014.

Based in South Korea, Zinus offers a range of mattresses, bed frames, and sofas. The company utilizes unique components in its mattresses, like green tea, charcoal, and olive oil. Models come in a range of materials, heights, and firmnesses to accommodate diverse sleeping preferences. Zinus stands out for its budget-friendly pricing.

U.S.-based Casper gained popularity as one of the first mattress-in-a-box companies. Many of its models use cooling technology and zoned support systems, but simpler, budget-friendly models are also available. Casper produces multiple hybrid and foam mattresses with varying materials, firmnesses, and features to suit different budgets and sleep preferences. The brand introduced a new mattress line in 2024, retiring older models in the process.

For shoppers seeking a quality mattress that won’t break the bank, Zinus and Casper have plenty of options. We’ll provide an in-depth comparison of the two brands and highlight some of their top models so that you can select the most appropriate fit.

Sizing Options

Mattress size can be influential in promoting a good night’s rest. Factors like whether you share a bed with a partner, how much room you have available, and your overall budget play a role in size choice.

It can be easy to overlook the mattress’ height and weight, but these dimensions also impact comfort and practicality. People with back pain or mobility issues often prefer higher sleep surfaces, as they frequently make getting out of bed easier.

Individuals who weigh more than 230 pounds also tend to favor thicker models since they allow more room for ample comfort and support systems. However, high-profile models may require deep pocket sheets. A lower-profile mattress may be better suited to shorter and lighter individuals, those with low overhead space, and people with high bed frames.

Mattress weight is generally less important in terms of comfort. A more substantial build can make the bed feel better anchored, but a heavy mattress could make setup or moving more difficult.

Both Casper and Zinus produce a wide range of mattress models in varying sizes. A diverse assortment means that most shoppers should be able to find a model that fits their sleep styles, but too many choices can also be overwhelming.

Casper One and Casper Dream mattresses are available in the six standard sizes: twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, and California king. These models are also available in a split king for couples with adjustable beds. Other Casper models are not sold in a twin size.

For Zinus, sizing options vary by model. Many Zinus designs only come in twin, full, queen, and king, while others also come in short queen, twin XL, and/or California king. Taller individuals might be somewhat more limited when shopping for a Zinus mattress since the twin XL and California king sizes aren’t available for all models.

Zinus produces a wider range of mattress heights. Some models are available in as many as four different thicknesses, varying from low-profile (6 inches) to high-profile (14 inches). Casper mattresses each come in one set height. Options span from standard height (10 inches) to high-profile (14 inches). While most shoppers will be satisfied with the thickness options by either brand, Zinus has an advantage for those looking for a low-profile model.

Weight directly relates to materials, construction methods, and height. Because Zinus offers low-profile models, many of its mattresses weigh under 60 pounds. Casper mattresses tend to weigh more due to differences in construction and thickness. Additionally, the hybrid mattresses by both brands weigh more than the all-foam models because of their coil cores.

Overall, Zinus and Casper sell plenty of size options, so it’s unlikely that shoppers will feel restricted with either brand.

Construction and Materials Comparison

A mattress’ overall performance, feel, and durability depend almost entirely on its composition.

Both Zinus and Casper produce primarily all-foam and hybrid models, so it’s helpful to understand the common traits of these designs.

All-foam mattresses typically feature a polyfoam support core combined with a comfort system made of memory foam, polyfoam, latex, and/or fiber. Because most foam conforms closely to the body, all-foam mattresses usually excel at pressure relief.

Hybrids utilize a pocketed coil support core coupled with a substantial comfort system made from foam, latex, microcoils, and/or fiber. These models generally have better ease of movement, breathability, and edge support than the average all-foam design.

We’ll break down the construction methods of each Zinus and Casper model to highlight differences in feel and performance.

Zinus

Three all-foam options and three hybrid models are among the most popular offerings by Zinus.

Zinus All-Foam Mattresses

Every Zinus all-foam model is engineered to cushion pressure points while reducing the heat retention often associated with memory foam.

The Zinus Green Tea Memory Foam Mattress is the company’s best-selling model. The mattress has a medium soft (4) feel, and most sizes come in four height options (6, 8, 10, or 12 inches).

Its memory foam comfort layer contains green tea and charcoal infusions, which are designed to reduce moisture and odor buildup. A polyfoam transition layer and support core promote spinal alignment while enhancing pressure relief.

As an all-foam model, the Zinus Green Tea Memory Foam Mattress provides deep contouring while minimizing motion transfer. The exact dimensions vary based on height, but the 10-inch version includes three layers:

  • 2.5 inches of memory foam infused with green tea and charcoal
  • 2 inches of transitional polyfoam
  • 5.5-inch polyfoam base

The Zinus Cooling Gel Memory Foam Mattress is intended to provide a cooler sleep experience. A gel infusion in the memory foam comfort layer is intended to dissipate excess heat. The 8-inch mattress has a medium (5) feel, the 10- and 12-inch versions are medium soft (4), and the 14-inch option is soft (3). The 10-inch model consists of three layers:

  • 2.5 inches of gel-infused memory foam
  • 1.5-inch polyfoam transition layer
  • 6 inches of high-density foam

The Zinus Pressure Relief Cloud Memory Foam Mattress is built for plushness and cushioning. It utilizes five distinct layers, including a 1-inch microfiber layer quilted into the cover. The model is available in three heights: 8, 10, or 12 inches. While the 8- and 10-inch options are medium soft (4), the 12-inch version is soft (3). The 10-inch model incorporates:

  • 1 inch of microfiber, quilted into the cover
  • 1 inch of polyfoam, quilted into the cover
  • 1.5-inch memory foam comfort layer
  • 2 inches of transitional polyfoam
  • 4.5 inches of high-density support foam

Zinus Hybrid Mattresses

For those who want more bounce, Zinus offers hybrid models that combine some of the advantages of both foam and coil constructions.

The Zinus Cooling Copper Adaptive Hybrid Mattress is designed with hot sleepers in mind. This model comes in either a 10- or 12-inch profile and has a medium (5) feel. The mattress’ fabric cover features phase change material engineered to wick away heat. Copper and green tea infusions in the memory foam are intended to reduce heat buildup and unwanted odors. The coil support core is encased in high-density foam for increased edge support.

The 10-inch option consists of four layers:

  • 2 inches of memory foam infused with copper and green tea
  • .5-inch transitional layer of polyfoam
  • 7.5-inch pocketed coil core
  • .5-inch base layer of high-density polyfoam

The Zinus Pressure Relief Euro Top iCoil Hybrid Mattress features a quilted cover with extra cushioning for a more luxurious feel. This medium (5) model comes in 12- and 13-inch options. The 12-inch version has five layers:

  • .5 inches of fiber padding (quilted into the cover)
  • 1.5-inch polyfoam comfort layer
  • 2-inch high-density polyfoam transition layer
  • .5-inch high-density polyfoam transition layer
  • 7.5-inch support core of individually wrapped coils

The Zinus Pressure Relief Pillow Top iCoil Hybrid also has a medium (5) feel. Engineered to alleviate pressure points, the mattress features BioFoam, which integrates natural seed oil to limit the use of petroleum-based alternatives. This model is available in one thickness, 10 inches, which includes four layers:

  • .75-inch polyfoam comfort layer
  • 1.5-inch polyfoam comfort layer
  • .5-inch high-density polyfoam transitional layer
  • 7.5-inch individually wrapped coil core

Casper

The Casper mattress lineup consists of three hybrids and two all-foam models. Each mattress differs in composition, but all feature the same breathable cover made from recycled polyester that includes recycled bottles, upcycled cotton, rayon, and spandex.

One of Casper’s standout features is its proprietary AirScape polyfoam. Engineered to promote ventilation, the foam helps dissipate heat better than traditional alternatives by including small perforations.

The Casper One is an all-foam model designed to encourage good sleep posture and relieve pressure points. Adaptive polyfoam and memory foam create a medium firm (6) feel to ensure a plush yet supportive surface with moderate conforming. This model consists of three layers:

  • Polyfoam
  • Memory foam
  • High-density polyfoam

The medium (5) Casper Dream Hybrid builds on the Casper One’s design by using transitional memory foam with a zoned construction. This provides more support around the torso and hips. The Dream Hybrid also swaps out high-density base foam in the support core for pocketed steel coils, which make the mattress feel bouncier and more supportive than the Casper One. This mattress consists of four individual layers:

  • Polyfoam
  • Zoned memory foam
  • Pocketed coils
  • High-density polyfoam

You can upgrade the Dream Hybrid to the Casper Dream Max, which adds a third foam layer to the comfort system. This model is also medium (5), but noticeably plusher than the standard Dream Hybrid.

The Casper Snow Hybrid is a medium (5) hybrid designed with cooling components to help you maintain a comfortable temperature during sleep. These include proprietary “HeatDelete” bands that dissipate heat from the sleep surface and a cover that feels cool to the touch at all times. This model consists of five distinct layers:

  • Memory foam coated in phase change material
  • “HeatDelete” bands
  • Zoned transitional memory foam
  • Pocketed coils
  • High-density polyfoam

As with the Dream Hybrid, you can opt to upgrade the Snow Hybrid to the Casper Snow Max. This model adds a third memory foam layer to the comfort system, and the result is a medium soft (4) feel with deep cushioning and contouring.

Pricing Information

On the surface, it’s not always clear to customers why some models are more expensive than others. Mattress type (innerspring, all-foam, hybrid, latex, or airbed) is often the most influential factor. Hybrid, latex, and airbed models usually cost more than innerspring and all-foam options due to their materials and construction techniques. Other variables that affect the price include material quality, mattress thickness, company policies, and manufacturing location.

While a well-constructed mattress is more likely to last longer, this doesn’t mean you have to purchase the most expensive model on the market. A high-quality queen mattress is typically between $1,000 and $2,000, but models are available for just a couple hundred dollars to well over $4,000. Knowing which features to prioritize can help shoppers find the right balance between value and performance.

Zinus is known for its affordable price-points. While hybrids are generally more expensive than all-foam designs, the two styles are comparably priced for this brand.

Casper offers a combination of budget-friendly and luxury models, so its pricing is more variable. The Casper One is the company’s most economical option. The Casper Dream Hybrid and Snow Hybrid are competitively priced when compared to similar designs on the market today, while the Max models carriy higher price tags.

Mattress Performance Ratings

Many factors influence the feel and performance of a mattress, which in turn impacts sleep quality. A single model rarely excels in all categories, which is why it’s important to determine your priorities before purchasing a mattress.

Durability
This refers to how a mattress holds up with regular usage, which ultimately depends on craftsmanship and material quality. A well-constructed mattress that resists premature sagging can support sleepers for 7 to 10 years or longer. While it might cost more upfront, a high-quality mattress with a longer lifespan is usually a better value in the long run.

Motion Isolation
Motion transfer occurs when movement on one part of the bed is felt on another area. Since vibrations can interrupt sleep, couples and those who wake up easily often prefer a mattress with strong motion isolation. Of all the mattress types, memory foam has the best reputation for absorbing motion. Innerspring and hybrid models generally have more bounce, so they tend to transfer movement to a greater extent. However, thicker comfort layers and pocketed coils can reduce the spread of vibrations.

Sex
Firmness level, ease of movement, temperature regulation, edge support, and bounce can contribute to how well a mattress facilitates sex. Generally, a mattress should be firm enough to prevent excess sinkage, which can impede movement. Bounce also makes motion easier. A sturdy edge allows for more usable surface space, and a breathable design can help couples maintain a more comfortable temperature.

Temperature Neutrality
How well a mattress regulates temperature can greatly impact comfort and sleep quality. Certain types of mattresses are more likely to retain heat than others. Traditional memory foam is notorious for trapping heat since it hugs the body closely, but many companies now utilize gel infusions and other special materials designed to keep sleepers cooler. Hybrid and innerspring mattresses generally perform well in this category since their coil cores enhance ventilation.

Pressure Relief
A mattress with exceptional pressure relief cradles the body and encourages proper spinal alignment by distributing the sleeper’s weight more evenly. Finding a model that strikes a balance between contouring and support is key. While mattresses with close-conforming comfort systems often earn high marks in this area, optimal support and pressure relief require a mattress firmness that’s appropriate for the sleeper’s body type and preferred position.

Off-gassing
New mattresses often emit odors when volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are released into the air. Also known as off-gassing, the chemical-like smell is most common with synthetic foam and typically subsides within a few hours to a couple of days. Some people are more sensitive to off-gassing than others, but the odors themselves are not known to be harmful.

Ease of Movement
Ease of movement is important when it comes to sex or changing sleep positions. Extremely soft or deeply contouring foam can give sleepers the sensation of being trapped within their mattress, making movement more challenging. Hybrid, innerspring, and latex mattresses tend to rate more highly in this category than all-foam models because their support systems are generally more responsive to changes in pressure. Firmer models are also usually easier to move on since sleepers don’t sink in as deeply.

Edge Support
Mattresses with stronger edges are better equipped to resist sagging along the sides, which can increase the usable surface area and make getting in and out of bed easier. Firm mattresses, those with sturdier support cores, and models with reinforced perimeters tend to have better edge support. Hybrid and innerspring mattresses typically outperform all-foam models in this category since the coils provide more structure.

Shipping

Shipping policies can vary widely among different brands, so it’s beneficial to research possible charges and restrictions before making a decision. Some companies offer White Glove delivery, in which case a professional delivers and sets up the mattress for you. Old mattress removal may also be available. A few companies include these services for no additional fee, but most charge extra.

Both Zinus and Casper utilize a mattress-in-a-box shipping method, which is common in the mattress market today. The mattress is compressed in plastic, rolled, and delivered directly to the customer in a maneuverable box. Once the mattress is removed from its packaging, it decompresses to regain its intended shape. Most mattress-in-a-box companies provide free shipping to the contiguous U.S., and products by some brands arrive in as little as 3 to 5 days.

Zinus Shipping Policies
Zinus offers free FedEx Ground shipping to the contiguous 48 states. Orders typically arrive between 5 and 12 business days when ordered directly through the company. Zinus mattresses are vacuum-sealed in plastic, rolled, placed in a box, and then shipped to your doorstep. No signature is required. The mattress should immediately begin expanding once unpacked, but it may take up to 72 hours to complete the process.

Casper Shipping Policies
All Casper mattresses ship free of charge to the contiguous U.S. and the Canadian provinces via UPS. Shipping is available to Alaska, Hawaii, and the Canadian territories for an additional charge. Most orders arrive within 7 business days, but some locations are eligible for expedited delivery.

Within the contiguous U.S. and parts of Canada, Casper also offers optional in-home delivery of the king and California king sizes of the Wave Hybrid for $149. The service includes professional setup. Customers may also be eligible for old mattress removal.

Sleep Trial and Returns

Even if you research a model thoroughly before purchase, sleeping on it night after night might not be as comfortable as you had hoped. A sleep trial allows the customer to test a mattress with minimal to no risk.

Most sleep trials are around 100 days, but some are as long as 18 months. Some companies require that you test the mattress for a minimum period of time before initiating the return process, since it can take time to adjust to a new mattress. During the eligible return window, the customer can contact the company to request a return and receive a refund of the purchase price. The customer may be responsible for covering returning shipping fees or finding a local charity that accepts mattress donations, but some companies arrange a complimentary pickup.

Most companies expect returned mattresses to be in good condition and may reject those that are not.

Zinus Sleep Trial and Return Policy
Zinus mattresses purchased through the company come with a 100-night sleep trial. There is no minimum break-in period, so customers can request a return at any point during this period. Zinus will issue a prepaid return shipping label and directions for scheduling a FedEx pickup. Orders picked up by a service partner for disposal may incur a $75 charge. Refunds are typically issued within 2 to 5 business days. Zinus mattresses purchased from other retailers may be subject to different sleep trial and return policies.

Casper Sleep Trial and Return Policy
Casper’s 100-night sleep trial applies to all of its mattresses, but returns can only be initiated after a 30-day adjustment period. In the event of a return, Casper arranges pickup by a courier and covers the cost of shipping. Customers are issued a full refund, and the mattress is recycled or donated to a charity. Any original shipping fees are not eligible for a refund.

Warranty

Mattresses are a big investment, but warranties can help give shoppers the confidence to move forward with a purchase. These policies protect the customer from defects in materials and craftsmanship.

Warranty details vary, so it’s a good idea to read the fine print. Depending on the nature of the defect, a company may elect to repair or replace the mattress. Some may charge a prorated fee depending on how long you’ve owned the product, and many companies pass associated shipping costs on to the customer. While some companies provide lifetime warranties, the average warranty length is between 10 and 20 years.

Terms and conditions apply. Policies are non-transferable and do not typically cover damage due to normal wear and tear, abuse or misuse, or improper support,

Zinus Mattress Warranty
All Zinus mattresses are backed by a 10-year limited warranty, which covers manufacturing and material defects. Damage related to improper use is not covered, and removing mattress tags voids the warranty. Only the original purchaser is eligible for the warranty. If the company determines your mattress is defective, it will replace it or issue a prorated refund.

Casper Mattress Warranty
Each Casper mattress used for non-commercial purposes includes a 10-year limited warranty that protects against defects in craftsmanship and/or materials, including mattress impressions deeper than 1 inch, cracking or splitting foam, and faulty mattress cover zippers. Casper will choose to either repair or replace the mattress if it determines there is an eligible defect.

If a customer wishes to replace their defective mattress with a more expensive model, Casper also offers an “Upgrade Mattress” option. The customer pays the difference between the original mattress cost and the upgraded model.
