Our Testing Team’s Take
Over nearly a decade, we’ve put almost 2,000 beds to the test in our Seattle sleep lab. We’re sticklers about the quality of our testing, so our team follows the same rigorous methods for each bed so that we can make fair comparisons.
Our testing team includes people with different body weights, sleeping positions, and preferences, which helps us make better judgments about what consumers will think of a particular mattress. We also consider real-world feedback from customers and our in-home testers when creating reviews. Here’s our take on Saatva vs. Helix.
Our Verdict
Price-wise, the Saatva Classic and Helix Midnight Luxe are in the same ballpark. The Saatva costs a bit more, but it comes with extras like a lifetime warranty, a year-long sleep trial, and free White Glove delivery. That’s not to say that the Helix policies aren’t great too – each bed comes with a 15-year warranty, 100-night trial, and free delivery – but Saatva’s policies are industry-leading and there aren’t many companies who can compete.

I loved the Saatva. The innerspring build was a refreshing change from all these squishy foam mattresses on the market today—I felt very supported and it was so easy to move around the bed. My favorite thing was how exceptionally cool the bed stayed throughout the night.
With high-quality builds, durable materials, and excellent brand reputations, this choice largely comes down to what kind of sleep surface you like best. The Classic comes in three firmness options and two thicknesses, so it’s a bit more versatile than the Midnight Luxe, which has one firmness level and one profile option.
The Saatva Classic is an innerspring bed with a traditionally bouncy, responsive feel, while the Helix Midnight Luxe has a more cushioning, adaptive sleep surface. If you want a pressure-relieving bed that cushions sore spots and contours with your body, opt for the Helix. Hot sleepers and people looking for enhanced back support will appreciate the Saatva’s strong perimeter and added lumbar cushioning. If you’re not sure what you need, our guide to choosing a mattress can help.

The Midnight Luxe is designed especially with side sleepers in mind, and I could feel it every step of the way. As a side sleeper, my hips and shoulders are always digging into the mattress, so they need that combo of cushioning and support. The Midnight Luxe’s foams cradle around your body, and the coil core keeps you from feeling like you’re sinking into the void. It’s an upgrade from the basic Helix Midnight, and it definitely felt like one.

Saatva Classic Breakdown
The Saatva Classic comes in three firmness levels; soft (3), medium firm (6), and firm (8), as well as two height profiles; 11.5 inches and 14.5 inches. There are some differences in performance between the models but all three share pretty similar characteristics.
The organic cotton cover is breathable and helps keep the mattress remarkably cool. The fabric is quilted together with a layer of polyfoam that adds cushioning and a bit of pressure relief. Beneath the polyfoam, there’s a memory foam lumbar pad that’s designed to give you extra lower back support and promote even spinal alignment.
The transitional layer is a unique system with individually wrapped microcoils. The middle third of the microcoils are made from heavier gauge steel that’s meant to boost support under your midsection and prevent sagging. Finally, there’s a high-density foam rail wrapping the edges of another layer of steel coils. These two support core layers create a strong and durable base.
Together, all these components make a mattress that’s responsive, cool, and easy to move around on. It has a more traditionally springy feel than the Midnight Luxe and gives you the feeling that you’re sleeping “on” rather than “in” your mattress. The downside here is that the many inches of springs create some bounce that’s noticeable if you sleep with a partner who tosses and turns.
Helix Midnight Luxe Breakdown
The Helix Midnight Luxe only comes in one firmness level, medium firm (6). However, Helix makes a number of other Luxe models in both softer and firmer feels. This particular mattress is aimed at side sleepers and people looking for a bed with mid-range firmness.
It starts with a pillow-top covered in breathable Tencel fabric, or for an added charge, proprietary cooling fabric. The comfort system has two layers. The upper layer is a polyfoam developed by Helix that’s engineered to feel bouncier and more responsive than traditional foam. If you want extra lower back support, you can upgrade this layer to include a zoned support system. The second comfort layer is copper gel memory foam that adapts to your body’s shape to increase pressure relief without retaining as much heat as traditional memory foam.
Another polyfoam layer acts as a buffer between the comfort system and support core, keeping you from sinking too deeply into the mattress’ layers. This hybrid’s zoned support core has individually wrapped coils made from different gauges of steel. Stronger coils surround the perimeter to create strong edge support and an even sleep surface. The middle section also has thicker coils to keep your spine aligned and your hips supported. At the mattress’ base, there’s a thin polyfoam layer anchoring the other materials.
Compared to the Saatva Classic, the Helix Midnight Luxe has more foam and all the pros and cons that come with it. It’s better at absorbing movement from tossing and turning and alleviating pressure points, but it also has less bounce and it sleeps warmer.
Mattress Sizing and Weight
Both the Saatva Classic and the Helix Midnight Luxe come in a full range of sizes from twin to California king. Each range also includes some harder-to-find dimensions. Saatva offers split king and split California king while Helix has short queen and RV king options.
The Helix Midnight Luxe is available in a 13.5-inch profile and the Saatva Classic comes in either 11.5-inch or 14.5-inch profiles. They have similar weights, with a queen Helix bed weighing about 120 pounds and the Saatva coming in between 110 and 120 pounds depending on which thickness you choose. In either case, you’ll need a partner to help you move the bed.
Mattress Model | Profile | Weight (Queen) |
---|---|---|
Saatva Classic | 11.5”, 14.5” | 110-120 lbs. |
Helix Midnight Luxe | 13.5” | 120 lbs. |
Performance Ratings
We get our performance ratings straight from the team at our test lab in Seattle. We use thorough testing methods to ensure that we compare beds fairly. When looking at the Saatva Classic and Helix Midnight Luxe, we found several differences in performance.
The Midnight Luxe has more foam than the Saatva Classic, and it prevents motion transfer a bit better as a result. However, foam typically traps heat and the Midnight Luxe sleeps warmer than the Saatva Classic. Both beds have solid pressure relief and offer strong support for their intended sleepers.
The Midnight Luxe is best for sleepers who weigh under 230 pounds and it proved particularly comfortable for side sleepers and people on our team between 130 and 230 pounds. When comparing it to the Saatva Classic’s medium firm (6) model, the Saatva Classic offered our testers above 230 pounds a bit more support. However, it proved too firm for many of our testers under 130 pounds, who preferred the soft (3) Saatva model.
Mattress Pricing
While neither of these mattresses fall into the budget bed category, we do think they offer shoppers an excellent value. Both have solid constructions, durable materials, and transparent customer service policies. Saatva and Helix each offer mattresses that are more affordable and more expensive than these models, placing the Midnight Luxe and Classic in each company’s mid-range when it comes to price.
The Saatva Classic costs somewhat more than the Helix Midnight Luxe, but each Saatva mattress includes a longer sleep trial and warranty than the Midnight Luxe, as well as free White Glove delivery. Though the sticker price is lower on the Helix Midnight Luxe, keep in mind that the optional upgrades could add up to an additional $500 over the base price.

What Customers Are Saying
Both Saatva and Helix customers are on the record boasting about their bed’s premium construction, cool feel, easy customer service, and overall value. Reviewers with back pain appreciated the Saatva Classic’s extra lumbar support and balanced feel, while owners of the Midnight Luxe thought it gave them excellent edge support and pressure relief.
With comparable price-points and quality, you’ll want to think about which model best supports your sleeping position and body type before making a purchase.
