Sizing Options
Mattress size determines a bed’s surface area. Choosing the right mattress size may be key to getting a good night’s sleep, particularly if you share the bed.
You should also consider a bed’s height and weight, which depend on the materials and construction. Higher-profile mattresses may require deep pocket sheets.
Most shoppers don’t consider the weight of mattresses, but if you plan to move frequently, a lighter model can simplify the process.

Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King, Split KingSaatva and Avocado both produce the full range of standard mattress sizes for most models, but the Saatva Youth is only available in twin, twin XL, and full. In addition to the standard sizes, many of the models by Saatva and Avocado come in split king or split California king.
Both companies also offer a fairly wide array of thicknesses, including medium- and high-profile options. Saatva’s mattresses range from 10 to 15.5 inches, and Avocado’s measure between 9 and 18 inches.
Since Saatva and Avocado have similar size and profile options, these are unlikely to be deciding factors for most shoppers. That said, only Saatva offers split king sizes, while Avocado has a wider selection of models available in split California king size.
Construction and Materials Comparison
Construction and materials have a major impact on a bed’s overall performance. Different materials have distinct potential benefits and drawbacks, and what’s the best mattress for you depends on your personal preferences.
If you’re not familiar with the basics of mattress construction, we’ll give you a quick overview. The comfort system is the topmost layer or layers of a mattress. Usually made from foam, polyfoam, or latex, the comfort system is designed for cradling and pressure relief. Memory foam provides the closest contouring, while latex tends to be more breathable, durable, and responsive.
Below the comfort system rests the support core, which stabilizes the mattress surface. Common core materials include high-density polyfoam, Dunlop latex, and metal coils. Latex and coil cores tend to have more bounce, airflow, and edge support.
Saatva produces hybrid and innerspring models, while Avocado focuses on hybrid and latex designs. We’ll break down their designs to help you weigh your options.
Saatva
Saatva’s hybrid and innerspring models come in a broad range of comfort levels to cater to sleepers with different body types and position preferences.
The Saatva Classic is a modern take on a traditional innerspring mattress. This flagship model is available in two height options, 11.5 inches and 14.5 inches, and three firmness options, soft (3), medium firm (6), and firm (8).
The design includes five main components:
- 3-inch Euro-top with polyfoam and fiber encased in GOTS-certified organic cotton
- .375-inch memory foam lumbar pad
- 4 inches of pocketed coils
- 4 or 7 inches of hourglass coils
- High-density polyfoam edge encasement
The Saatva Latex Hybrid is a responsive, medium firm (6) model with natural materials. This bed includes four main layers wrapped in a GOTS-certified organic cotton cover:
- GOTS-certified organic wool
- 3 inches of zoned natural Talalay latex (Rainforest Alliance certified)
- 8 inches of zoned pocketed coils
- GOTS-certified organic cotton/wool blend base pad
The Saatva HD is a firm (7) hybrid designed for larger sleepers. The bed includes six distinct layers intended to combine comfort and support:
- 3-inch Euro-top with polyfoam encased in GOTS-certified organic cotton
- 1.5 inches of zoned natural Talalay latex (Rainforest Alliance certified)
- 1.5 inches of memory foam
- 2 inches of polyfoam
- 6 inches of zoned offset coils with high-density polyfoam rails
- 2 inches of high-density polyfoam
The Saatva Youth is an affordable innerspring model designed for growing kids. It comes in twin, twin XL, and full sizes and is flippable with two firmness options. One side has a medium (5) feel intended for younger children, while the other side is firm (7) to support slightly older children. The mattress consists of three layers wrapped in a GOTS-certified organic cotton cover:
- Zoned polyfoam
- Coils with polyfoam edge reinforcement
- Convoluted polyfoam
Avocado
Avocado produces both all-latex and latex hybrid models. Most of Avocado’s materials are GOTS- or GOLS-certified organic, including a GOTS-certified organic cotton cover that encases every mattress. In addition to using natural and certified organic materials, the company is Climate Neutral Certified and donates 1% of revenue to environmental organizations. We’ll break down each of Avocado’s mattress models and explain how they’re constructed.
Avocado Green
The Avocado Green Mattress is the brand’s flagship hybrid model. It contains four layers:
- Organic wool
- 2 inches of GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex
- 8 inches of zoned pocketed coils
- 1-inch base layer of GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex
The standard Avocado Green has a firm (7) feel, while the pillow-top version adds an extra 2-inch layer of Dunlop latex in the comfort system to create a medium firm (6) feel.
Avocado Vegan
The construction of the Avocado Vegan is nearly identical to the Avocado Green. However, the Avocado Vegan doesn’t contain any wool. Instead, the top layer uses organic cotton for cushioning. Like the Avocado Green, the Avocado Vegan has a firm (7) feel, but sleepers can also choose the pillow-top version for a medium firm (6) sleep surface.
Avocado Latex
The Avocado Latex is a firm (7) all-latex model with four layers:
- GOTS-certified organic wool
- 2 inches of zoned, convoluted GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex
- 3 inches of GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex
- 4 inches of GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex
Avocado Vegan Latex
The Avocado Vegan Latex Mattress shares a similar construction to the Avocado Latex, but replaces the wool layer with GOTS-certified organic cotton. Like its counterpart, the Avocado Vegan Latex is also firm (7).
Avocado Organic Luxury Plush
The Avocado Organic Luxury Plush is a hybrid mattress with 21 layers. Its materials include GOTS-certified organic cotton, GOTS-certified organic wool, alpaca fiber, silk, mohair fiber, GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex, pocketed coils, and a GOTS-certified organic flax seed pad.
The standard version of the Avocado Organic Luxury Plush has a medium (5) feel and measures 15 inches thick, while the pillow-top version is medium soft (4) and 17 inches thick. Because of its high profile, the Avocado Organic Luxury Plush requires deep pocket sheets.
Pricing Information
Mattress prices vary widely. A budget model may cost as little as $300, while high-end options can carry price tags of over $3,000.
Many factors contribute to the price of a new mattress:
- Materials and Construction: Models with fewer or lower-quality materials usually cost less. However, higher-quality materials may be more durable. Additionally, mattresses with more complex constructions, such as hybrid models, are generally more expensive.
- Mattress Size: Typically, larger mattresses carry higher price tags. If you’re shopping for a king size, expect to pay more than you would for a twin size.
- Policies: Generous shipping, return, and warranty policies can add value and convenience, but they may also increase the overall price of a mattress.
We’ll share the list prices of Saatva and Avocado mattresses to help you compare your options. Both companies also frequently run limited-time offers that reduce the overall cost.

Saatva and Avocado mattresses fall into a similar price range. While some of their models carry higher-than-average price tags, they also produce options that are below the average cost of similarly constructed mattresses. For smaller mattress sizes, the Saatva Youth is an affordable option.
Avocado sells more midrange models. The Avocado Green and the Avocado Vegan are priced below average for latex-based hybrids with organic materials, and the Avocado Latex and Avocado Vegan Latex fall right around average for all-latex mattresses.
Both Saatva and Avocado offer high-end models. The Saatva HD is built with durable materials for stronger support, while the Avocado Organic Luxury Plush is a hybrid made with 21 distinct layers.
Both Saatva and Avocado have similar prices, so you may need to consider other factors, such as your preferred mattress type and firmness level. Ultimately, the best value depends on your needs and preferences.
Mattress Performance Ratings
When comparing mattresses, it’s crucial to consider each bed’s materials, construction, and pricing in the context of performance. Mattress performance includes many key factors, such as motion isolation, pressure relief, and temperature regulation. We’ll give a detailed breakdown of the criteria that normally matter most to sleepers, but remember to consider your own needs and comfort preferences when comparing models.
Durability
Durability refers to how long a mattress maintains its support and structure before showing signs of wear and tear or deterioration. A new mattress represents a significant upfront cost, so it’s wise to choose a model that can give you the best return on your investment.
The average lifespan for most mattress models is between 7 to 10 years, but certain models may last upward of 15 to 20 years. Factors such as a sleeper’s body weight, the bed’s foundation, how often the mattress is rotated, the type of materials, and the density of materials all impact a mattress’ lifespan.
Motion Isolation
If you share a bed with your partner, child, or pet, then finding a surface with excellent motion isolation can be critical. Motion isolation measures how well a mattress absorbs motion and prevents it from transferring across the bed’s surface. Most mattresses with a moderately thick comfort system provide a reasonable degree of motion isolation, but memory foam tends to perform the best in this category.
Sex
The best mattresses for sex strike a balance between contouring and responsiveness. Couples usually prefer a bouncy surface, but it’s also important that the bed provides enough cushioning. On the other hand, too much contouring can hinder movement.
Temperature Neutrality
A mattress with strong temperature regulation doesn’t retain as much body heat, keeping the surface cooler throughout the night. This is especially important for those who tend to sleep hot.
Highly contouring mattresses, especially those with memory foam, can trap heat. Some formulations include open-cell technology or gel infusions designed to dissipate excess warmth. In general, innerspring, hybrid, and latex mattresses regulate temperatures better than most all-foam models.
Pressure Relief
Pressure relief refers to how well a mattress cradles the body to reduce the force around wider parts, like the hips and shoulders. Typically, mattresses with highly contouring comfort systems offer the most pressure relief by spreading the sleeper’s weight out more evenly. That said, the best mattress for neck and back pain varies from sleeper to sleeper depending on body type and sleep position.
Off-gassing
It’s common for new products to emit a distinct odor when removed from their packaging, and mattresses are no exception. Because mattress-in-a-box style mattresses are vacuum-sealed right after production, the packaging can trap odors, releasing them as you unbox your mattress.
The smells associated with a new mattress are not generally considered harmful, but they can be unpleasant, especially for those who are sensitive to strong odors. You may want to open a window or turn on a fan to increase ventilation when unpacking your new mattress. In a well-ventilated room, off-gassing odors usually go away within a few hours to several days.
Ease of Movement
Responsiveness makes for easier movement on top of a mattress, which may be important to those who change positions frequently and sleepers with mobility issues. Hybrid, innerspring, and latex beds traditionally have springier feels, while highly contouring materials, like memory foam, tend to inhibit motion.
Edge Support
Beds with strong edge support can withstand your body weight at their perimeters without sagging. This can increase the surface area usable for sleeping and sitting. Couples, sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds, and those who regularly use the perimeter of the bed generally prefer sturdy edges.

Shipping
Mattress brands normally handle shipping in one of two ways: mattress-in-a-box or White Glove delivery.
Mattress-in-a-box mattresses are the most common. With this method, a mattress is compressed, rolled, and packaged in a maneuverable box. This allows for easier and less expensive shipping. As a result, mattress-in-a-box delivery is usually free for customers. However, when the package arrives at your doorstep, you’ll need to move it to your bedroom, unbox and unwrap the new mattress, and position it on your bed frame.
If you’d prefer help setting up your new mattress, White Glove delivery is a full-service option. It generally includes in-home delivery and setup of your new mattress by a qualified team. This service may also come with optional old mattress removal. Most companies charge a fee for White Glove delivery service, but some provide it free of charge.
Saatva Shipping Policies
Saatva offers free White Glove mattress delivery to addresses in the contiguous United States. A team will contact you to schedule a window to deliver and set up your new mattress. This service also includes optional old mattress removal. Since Saatva typically makes each mattress after an order is placed, it may take 9 to 21 days to arrive.
If you live in Alaska or Hawaii, Saatva customer service representatives can help you arrange delivery via a freight forwarder, but direct shipping through the company is not available.
Avocado Shipping Policies
Avocado provides free mattress-in-a-box shipping to all 50 states in the U.S. The company uses FedEx for shipping services, but some king and California king sizes ship with AGS due to weight. Production times vary between models, ranging from around 2 business days to several weeks. Once shipped, mattresses usually arrive in 3 to 7 business days.
For an additional fee, Avocado offers White Glove delivery. With this option, Avocado’s service partners help transport the boxed mattress to your bedroom, set it up, and remove your old mattress. Fees are based on the weight of the order and start at $249.
Sleep Trial and Returns
Major online mattress brands generally have sleep trial and return policies. A sleep trial allows you to experience a new mattress in the comfort of your home. If you don’t like it, you can return it.
Keep in mind that not all sleep trials are the same. They differ in length and fine print. Some trials include a mandatory break-in period, which means you’ll need to try the new mattress for a minimum amount of time, most commonly 30 nights, before you can initiate a return. Additionally, some brands issue a full refund of the purchase price, while others deduct fees for shipping or processing.
Saatva Sleep Trial and Return Policy
Customers can take advantage of Saatva’s 365-night sleep trial. This trial does not include a mandatory break-in period, allowing you to request a return at any time during the period. Once you initiate a return, the company schedules a time for service partners to pick up the unwanted mattress. A $99 fee applies to cover the costs of labor and transportation associated with the return.
Avocado Sleep Trial and Return Policy
At 365 nights, Avocado offers one of the longest sleep trials in the industry. This trial includes a mandatory 30-night break-in period, and there are no added restocking fees or return shipping charges.
If you decide you’re not happy with your mattress after the first 30 nights, you can request a refund. The company helps arrange a donation and issues a refund of the purchase price.
Warranty
A mattress warranty covers defects that arise during a specific period of time after your purchase. Within this window, the company covers replacements or repairs under specific circumstances. Covered defects usually include cracking, splitting, and sagging or indentations over a certain depth. Warranty policies are non-transferable and do not apply to damage caused by abuse or misuse.
Some policies are prorated, meaning the owner is responsible for paying a fee that increases as the mattress ages. Additionally, some warranties require that the owner pay shipping and handling fees associated with claims.
Saatva Mattress Warranty
A lifetime warranty covers every model on Saatva’s main mattress line. These warranties offer to repair or replace a mattress with a qualifying defect. For the first two years, this is free of charge. For the remainder of the coverage period, the owner is responsible for a $149 transportation charge each way.
Saatva also has a Fairness Replacement Option that allows owners to keep the defective mattress and receive a new one for a prorated charge based on how long they’ve owned the mattress.
Avocado Mattress Warranty
Avocado mattresses are protected by a 25-year limited warranty. The warranty covers defects in the materials and manufacturing of the mattress, such as cracking, certain indentations, and unraveling stitching. The first 10 years of coverage are nonprorated. Avocado will elect to repair or replace qualifying mattresses without charge. From years 11 through 25, defective mattresses are eligible for replacement, though a prorated charge and shipping fees apply.
