Our Testing Team’s Take
We put every mattress we review through the same series of tests. That way, we can determine exactly how they compare to one another. We test for temperature regulation, pressure relief, and ease of movement among other qualities, using technology that gives us hard data.
We also know that comfort and support are just as important to shoppers, so we use every bed ourselves too. Our testing team is made up of people across a wide range of weight groups who use different sleeping positions. This allows us to see how a bed performs for different types of people and helps us determine the best mattresses. To date, our team has evaluated almost 2,000 mattresses.
Our Verdict
If you want a luxe mattress with premium materials and unwavering dedication to comfort and support, you’ll find the Saatva Classic or Avocado Green Mattress equally appealing. These are high-end mattresses with the price-points to prove it, so they may not be the right option if you’re on a tight budget. That said, they’re incredibly durable, well made, and backed with excellent warranties – so we think they have a solid overall value despite their costs.
The Avocado Green Mattress is a latex hybrid mattress with several eco-friendly certifications to back up its green-focused marketing. It’s a great fit for hot sleepers who struggle to find a bed that relieves pressure without causing them to overheat. It’s also worthwhile if you want a bouncy, responsive mattress that offers contouring and cushioning. It’s worth noting that the Avocado’s standard model is firm (7) and if you want a medium firm (6) or medium (5) feel, you’ll have to upgrade at a significant cost.

“I love the Avocado. I’m a sucker for organic marketing, but I also think this mattress can back up its claims. Not only is it exceptionally comfortable, it provides great support and is great at not trapping heat. I find latex to be a bit too bouncy for me on an everyday basis, but for someone who moves a lot during the night, it’s a great choice.”
The Saatva Classic has a more traditional construction than the Avocado mattress, but it’s not without its own innovation. This innerspring mattress has a pressure-relieving pillow-top and responsive coil-on-coil support system. It also has dedicated lumbar support, so if you experience back pain you may want to give the Saaatva a try. It comes in three firmness options and most of our testers found a model among them that was supportive and comfortable for their weight and sleeping position.

“I loved the Saatva. The innerspring build was a refreshing change from all these squishy foam mattresses on the market today—I felt very supported and it was so easy to move around the bed. My favorite thing was how exceptionally cool the bed stayed throughout the night.”

Saatva Classic Breakdown
The Saatva Classic has an innovative innerspring construction that uses coil-on-coil technology to create a responsive and supportive sleep surface. It’s available in three firmness options: soft (3), medium firm (6), and firm (8). Saatva calls these models Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm. They share the same materials but with different formulations that affect their firmness levels.
The comfort system is a Euro-top that’s quilted along with a layer of polyfoam. There’s extra cushioning beneath your midsection to bolster the lower back. There’s also a memory foam pad that aims to alleviate pressure and prevent lumbar pain.
The transitional layer consists of pocketed microcoils. Like the pillow-top, they’re separated into zones. The center is made from higher gauge steel to give your midsection extra support. The coils are wrapped individually to cut down on how much movement transfers from one side of the bed to the other.
The support core is a recycled steel base coil unit that has strong structure and plenty of room for air to flow. A high-density foam rail wraps the coils to increase edge support. The mattress has a soft and breathable organic cotton cover. You can choose between 11.5-inch or 14.5-inch profile options.
Avocado Green Breakdown
The Avocado Mattress is a hybrid latex mattress that boasts numerous organic and eco-friendly materials. It comes in three height options, each with a different firmness level. All three have the same 8-inch pocketed coil support core that’s split into seven zones to provide targeted spinal support. The coils sit on top of a 1-inch base made from Dunlop latex.
Avocado’s standard model is the firm mattress, which measures 7 out of 10 on our firmness scale. This model has a 2-inch Dunlop latex comfort system that offers some contouring without deep compression. The medium firm (6) model adds a pillow-top that includes an extra 2 inches of Dunlop latex, while the medium (5) option is a box-top with 3 inches of Dunlop latex and 3 inches of plush Talalay latex.
All the models have organic wool batting that’s stitched into an organic cotton cover. The mattress’ layers are hand-tufted together, meaning the mattress doesn’t contain any adhesives. It also carries certifications from the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS), Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).
Mattress Sizing and Weight
The Saatva Classic comes in two profiles, 11.5 inches or 14.5 inches, both of which are available in the same three firmness levels. The Avocado Green Mattress is available in 11-inch, 13-inch, or 15.5-inch heights that have different firmness levels. If you choose one of the models 13 inches or taller, keep in mind that you may need a shorter bed frame and deep-pocket sheets. With weights near or over 100 pounds, moving either of these mattresses can be a challenge. Take advantage of Saatva’s free White Glove delivery or Avocado’s optional White Glove delivery to get help installing your bed.
Both mattresses come in all the standard sizes including twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, and California king. The Saatva is also available in split king and split California king options.
Model | Profile | Weight (Queen) |
---|---|---|
Saatva Classic | 11.5″ or 14.5″ | 110 to 120 lbs. |
Avocado Green | 11”, 13”, 15.5” | 97 to 144 lbs. |
Performance Ratings
Despite their different materials, the Saatva Classic and Avocado Green Mattress offer similar performance across the board. Coil support cores give both beds a responsive, resilient sleep surface that’s easy to move around on and not at all restrictive. They’re worthwhile options for anyone who likes sleeping “on” rather than “in” a mattress. These bouncy surfaces do allow motion to transfer, though. Couples who wake each other up and light sleepers may find them difficult.
The latex in the Avocado offers significant pressure relief that’s great for people with hip or joint pain. The Saatva’s pressure relief is strong too, but it’s more mid-range than the Avocado’s. Temperature-wise, The Avocado and Saatva are exceptional. The Saatva is one of the coolest beds we’ve ever tested, and the Avocado is also a worthy contender for the best cooling mattress. Perimeter reinforcement gives both beds a leg-up on edge support as well, making either worth considering if you have mobility limitations.
With three firmness options each, most sleepers can find a Saatva Classic or Avocado Green Mattress that’s supportive and comfortable. The Avocado is better suited to people under 130 pounds than the Saatva is, especially those who opt for the Medium or Plush models. The firm Saatva Classic is a stellar choice for people over 230 pounds. It got 10’s across the board from our sleep testers in this weight group.
Mattress Pricing
Neither of these beds top our most affordable mattress list, but we think they’re an excellent value nonetheless. Both mattresses are made with premium materials and marketed as luxe, high-end options, and they’re priced accordingly. However, they come with some of the best shipping policies, sleep trials, and warranties out there, and they’re significantly more durable than many competing mattresses with lower price-points.
Though you may spend more initially to purchase the Saatva Classic or Avocado Mattress, you probably won’t have to replace them as quickly as you would another model. The Saatva costs around $100 more than the Firm Avocado, but they both go on sale regularly. The Medium and Plush Avocado models have extra layers that increase the overall price by at least several hundred dollars.

What Customers Are Saying
The Saatva Classic gets excellent reviews from owners who like how luxe and comfortable it feels. Combination sleepers and people who prefer strong support say the coil-on-coil design gives them plenty of structure. Saatva’s customer service team also gets top-notch reviews and owners are happy with their bed’s durability and premium build. Some reviewers say it takes a while for the mattress to break in and others have found it doesn’t isolate motion as well as they’d like.
People who bought the Avocado because it’s an organic mattress are largely happy with their choice. Reviewers like how supportive the latex feels and heavier sleepers say that the combination of latex and coils is sturdy and comfortable. Some reviews mention that it feels firmer than advertised, but the latex offers decent cushioning.
When choosing a mattress, think about what will work best for your body weight, sleeping position, and preferences.
