It is important to choose a mattress that is sized correctly for your needs. A bed that is too small can feel cramped, especially if you sleep with a partner. Between Purple and Lull, Purple offers the most variety in terms of sizing. Each of the brand’s mattresses are offered in split king sizes in addition to the six standard sizes, with the exception of the Purple Kid. Additionally, shoppers can choose between models with profiles ranging from 8 to 13 inches. It’s worth noting that the hybrid Purple models do not come in a twin size.

Lull offers one mattress, which has a standard 10-inch profile. The Original Lull Mattress weighs much less than Purple’s lightest option, which may make it easier to maneuver.

Construction and Materials Comparison

The vast majority of mattresses sold today follow a basic pattern, combining a pressure-relieving comfort system with a firmer support core. The materials used to make these sections determine the mattress type. To form an idea of how a mattress is likely to perform for different types of sleepers, it helps to have an understanding of the most common mattress types. Lull and Purple produce foam and hybrid mattresses:

• Foam: Foam mattresses usually have a comfort system made with layers of memory foam and polyfoam, over a denser polyfoam support core. Foam is a versatile material that can take on different characteristics depending on how it is made. Mattresses made with memory foam provide above-average pressure relief, but they tend to trap heat. To combat heat retention, manufacturers may aerate the foam or infuse it with gel.
• Hybrid: Hybrid mattresses are built using materials such as foam or latex, layered over an innerspring support core. The comfort layers add cushioning, and the springs generally provide increased support and bounce compared to an all-foam mattress. Their more complex construction often raises the price-point.

Lull currently offers three mattress. These include two all-foam models and one foam hybrid.

Lull Original Mattress

The Lull Original Mattress is an all-foam model that rates a medium firm, or 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale.

A 1.5-inch layer of gel-infused memory foam makes up the topmost part of the mattress. The gel infusions are designed to help prevent heat buildup around the body, and the memory foam conforms closely to cushion sensitive areas such as the hips and shoulders.

Beneath the gel-infused memory foam is a 1.5-inch layer of polyfoam. This transitional layer has a slightly bouncier feel that prevents sleepers from sinking too deeply. It rests atop a 7-inch high-density polyfoam support core that provides even support and helps promote proper spinal alignment. The mattress is wrapped in a stretchy rayon and polyester cover.

Lull Original Premium Mattress

The Original Premium Mattress builds on the flagship Original with a 12-inch all-foam design. Two layers of memory foam over transitional polyfoam make its surface feel slightly softer and more adaptive than the Original’s, but this mattress is also medium firm (6). The topmost layer is open-cell memory foam, which is resistant to heat buildup, and the second layer is infused with cooling gel.

Lulu Luxe Mattress

The Lulu Luxe Mattress is a hybrid with comfort layers of memory foam and polyfoam, a transitional polyfoam layer, and a pocketed coil support core. A foam encasement contains the coils and reinforces the perimeter to prevent excessive sinkage.

This mattress is medium firm (6). Due to the coils, this model is bouncier and more supportive than Lull’s all-foam mattresses, but the three foam layers still provide ample cushioning for your body.

Purple

Purple makes one foam mattress and three hybrid mattresses, as well as a second foam mattress designed for children. All of the mattresses feature a layer of Purple Grid. This proprietary gel material provides contouring similar to memory foam, but with a quicker response to pressure and less potential for heat retention.

Purple Mattress

The Purple Mattress is an all-foam model with a medium firm (6) feel. The comfort system consists of a 2-inch layer of Purple Grid atop a 3.5-inch layer of polyfoam. The support core is made with 4 inches of high-density polyfoam.

The firmer polyfoam layers complement the conforming Purple Grid, resulting in a pressure-relieving yet supportive mattress. The mattress has a stretchy viscose, polyester, and lycra cover, with a non-toxic knit fire barrier.

Purple Hybrid

Similar to the Purple Mattress, the Purple Hybrid contains a 2-inch layer of Purple Grid designed to increase airflow and cushioning. The Purple Grid rests atop a 1-inch transitional layer of high-density polyfoam.

Rather than a foam support core, the Purple Hybrid features a 7.5-inch layer of pocketed coils reinforced with polyfoam. Each coil is encased in fabric to reduce noise and motion transfer, though air can still travel easily between the coils to prevent overheating. The coils are more responsive than foam, resulting in a slightly bouncier surface.

The Purple Hybrid also has a medium firm (6) feel and uses the same stretchy cover as the Purple Mattress. The coil core provides more durable support for sleepers over 230 pounds.

Purple Hybrid Premier

The Purple Hybrid Premier features the same stretchy cover and pocketed coil support core as the Purple Hybrid, but with a thicker comfort system. Shoppers can choose between a 3-inch or a 4-inch top layer of Purple Grid. The 3-inch version is medium firm (6), while the 4-inch version is medium (5). A thin polyfoam base beneath the coils helps add stability.

Purple Kid Mattress

As the name implies, the Purple Kid Mattress is built with children in mind. The mattress is an all-foam model with a medium firm (6) feel, and it is sold in a twin size built for smaller sleepers.

The mattress has a 2-inch layer of Purple Grid that cushions sharp points of the body to prevent pain or discomfort. Beneath the Purple Grid are two 2.5-inch layers of high-density polyfoam, which help provide structure and prevent excessive sinking. The top cover is machine-washable, which makes it easier to clean up spills or nighttime accidents.

Pricing Information

A number of factors influence mattress cost, including the materials and construction. Innerspring and foam mattresses are generally less expensive, while hybrid or latex models typically cost more.

While it may be tempting to opt for the least expensive option available, a quality mattress may pay off in terms of sleep quality and durability. Mattresses made using poor-quality materials often deteriorate faster, and they may not offer the same features as a higher-end mattress.

Lull and Purple both offer competitively priced mattresses, and shoppers may be able to take advantage of occasional discounts that further lower the price.

Mattress Performance Ratings

Selecting a mattress is a personal decision. There is no one mattress that will perfectly fit every single sleeper, but focusing on some key factors can help you sort through the different options and find the model that’s best for you.

Durability
Though an inexpensive mattress may be tempting to purchase, low-cost mattresses may not withstand the test of time. Investing in quality materials and workmanship can reduce the chances of your mattress prematurely sagging or cracking.

Motion Isolation
Close-conforming materials such as memory foam absorb movement and help prevent it from rippling across the surface of the bed. By contrast, mattresses made with responsive materials may make movements more noticeable. Sleeping partners who are easily disturbed by each other’s movements may prefer a mattress that resists motion transfer.

Sex
For sex, a mattress should offer a comfortable level of bounce. Mattresses that are too soft may make it challenging to switch positions, though many couples prefer at least some cushioning to provide traction. Additional features to look for include edge support, a quiet construction, and strong temperature regulation.

Temperature Neutrality
Some materials hold on to heat excessively, which can make it challenging to fall or stay asleep. Lying in one position for several hours can cause certain areas of the body to bear excessive pressure, which can lead to pain or discomfort over time. Depending on the materials used, a mattress may be more or less adept at relieving these pressure points. Most mattresses incorporate cushioning materials in the top layers, paired with firmer materials below to prevent pressure buildup from a lack of spinal support. A sleeper’s body type and preferred sleep position may dictate which type of mattress performs best at pressure relief.

Off-gassing
Sleepers may notice that some new mattresses have a slight chemical-like odor right after they are unboxed. This scent is typically the result of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). VOCs from mattresses aren’t generally considered to pose a health risk, and they normally air out within a few days. However, they may be bothersome for sleepers who are sensitive to smell. Off-gassing is most common with synthetic materials like memory foam and polyfoam.

Plush and deeply contouring materials have a tendency to restrict movement. This can pose a challenge to sleepers with mobility issues, or those who frequently change positions as they sleep. Combination sleeper may prefer a firmer or more responsive mattress, such as a hybrid model.

Edge Support
A mattress without enough edge support may sag near the perimeter of the bed, which can give sleepers the sensation of falling off. Weak edge support is more common in softer mattresses or those with a polyfoam base. Hybrid and innerspring mattresses with reinforced edges may be more suitable for sleepers who like to use the entire surface of the bed, or those who rely on the edges to get into bed.

Shipping

Most mattresses purchased online are compressed, wrapped in plastic, and placed in a box for shipping. This mattress-in-a-box shipping lowers delivery costs, and most manufacturers are able to provide the service free of charge. Customers are responsible for bringing the mattress into their home and installing it, which involves carefully removing the packaging and allowing the mattress to expand.

Some companies also offer White Glove delivery, in which a delivery team sets up the mattress in the shopper’s home and removes the discarded packaging. This service may include removal of an old mattress. Where available, White Glove delivery usually comes at an extra fee.

Lull Shipping Policies

Lull provides free mattress-in-a-box shipping to addresses in the contiguous United States, with an additional charge for orders shipped to Alaska and Hawaii. Orders ship via FedEx or UPS and arrive within approximately 1 to 4 business days. Lull does not currently offer White Glove delivery or old mattress removal.

Purple Shipping Policies

Purple offers free standard shipping to customers in the contiguous United States. Buyers in Alaska and Hawaii must pay an additional shipping charge, and not all models can be shipped to these states. Orders typically ship via FedEx within 6 to 10 days from the date of purchase. Canadian customers can order through Purple’s Canadian website.

Customers in the contiguous U.S. may be able to add White Glove delivery for an extra fee. This option includes installation and old mattress removal. Some models include complimentary White Glove delivery.

Sleep Trial and Returns

It can be daunting to purchase a mattress without first seeing or testing it in person. To assuage doubts, many online mattress retailers offer a sleep trial on their products. Sleep trials allow shoppers to test the product in their home for a set period of time, and return the mattress for a refund of the purchase price if they are not satisfied.

Sleep trials can last anywhere from 30 to 365 nights or more, with the average company offering around 100 nights to try out the mattress. Some manufacturers may require shoppers to keep the mattress for a minimum break-in period, to allow time to adjust to the feel of the mattress. Some companies may charge return shipping or handling fees.

Lull provides a 365-night sleep trial that begins on the delivery date. There is no required break-in period, so buyers can begin the return process at any point during this trial. Lull arranges for returned mattresses to be picked up and removed at no cost.

Purple Sleep Trial and Return Policy

Each Purple mattress comes with a 100-night sleep trial that begins on the night of delivery.  Buyers must keep the mattress for a minimum of 21 nights before initiating a return. Customers can choose whether they prefer a refund, or if they want to exchange the mattress for another model.

Warranty

Virtually all newly purchased mattresses are covered by a warranty. The warranty generally guarantees that the company will repair or replace defective products for a certain period of time after the purchase, providing the mattress is still with the original owner.

Most warranties protect against manufacturing defects such as unraveling stitches or permanent indentations. Normal wear and tear or damage such as cuts or burns are usually not covered. Using the mattress without a proper foundation may void the warranty.

It is important to read through each company’s warranty policy when shopping for a new mattress. Key factors to note include the duration of the policy, how to qualify for a claim, and whether customers are responsible for shipping and handling fees. Shoppers should note that some warranties are prorated, meaning the buyer is responsible for an increasing portion of the repair or replacement cost as time goes on.

Lull Mattress Warranty

The Original Lull Mattress is backed by a lifetime limited warranty. The warranty covers defects such as indentations measuring greater than 1.5 inches, and manufacturing flaws in the zipper or cover. Lull provides a repair or replacement for defective mattresses, though customers are responsible for paying a $75 shipping fee on products that are more than 10 years old.

Purple Mattress Warranty

Mattresses purchased directly from Purple come with a 10-year limited warranty, with a separate 2-year warranty for the cover. The mattress warranty protects against issues such as body indentations deeper than 1 inch, cracking or splitting foam, or other defects in materials or workmanship. Purple will repair or replace defective mattresses at its discretion. Customers must pay shipping, handling, and inspection costs.
