Full Mattress Review

Casper and Leesa mattress companies are widely known as pioneers in the “mattress-in-a-box” industry. Casper launched in 2014 and Leesa in 2015 as some of the first companies to sell mattresses online and ship them compressed to people’s doorsteps. Both companies are also notable for assembling most of their beds in the U.S. Casper is now owned by Carpenter Co., an international foam manufacturer, and Leesa is owned by 3Z Brands, the same company that owns other well-known mattress companies like Brooklyn Bedding, Helix, and Birch.

The Leesa Original and Casper One are the flagship mattresses for their respective companies. Comparable designs, firmness levels, and price-points can make choosing between these two beds difficult. To help shoppers out, we hand-tested both beds in our Test Lab and had our testing team members try the beds out at home. We also compared their company policies and online customer reviews to help you make an informed choice between the two.

Our Testing Team’s Take

Our team has personally tested nearly 2,000 mattresses over the past 10 years in our Seattle-based Test Lab. Throughout this extensive hands-on process, we’ve refined our methodology and adopted cutting edge testing procedures. For each bed, we use special censors and tools to determine how well the mattress absorbs motion, disperses heat, and relieves pressure.

In addition to our objective testing using high-tech tools, we also take mattresses home to see how they perform in a real bedroom environment over the course of several weeks. Because our team consists of testers with varying sleep position preferences and body weights, their insights can help a wide range of people identify the best mattress for them.

Our Verdict

The Leesa Original and Casper One are both standout all-foam mattresses. They  rate highly for pressure relief, making each one an attractive option to side sleepers and those seeking relief from nighttime pain. Both beds also isolate motion well. The ability to absorb and contain movement makes these mattresses appealing for couples who share a bed, especially when one partner is a light sleeper.

“The Leesa Original feels comfortable right off the bat. When lying on my side, I felt moderate contouring of my shoulders and hips, and I woke up without any aches or pains.”

Both beds are constructed similarly, with three foam layers and a cover.  As with many other all-foam beds, the edge support is fairly limited on these models. While that won’t bother many people, some sleepers may sink excessively when lying near the edges of these beds.

“One of the things that stood out the most to me was how well the Casper One absorbed motion. I liked that I wasn’t bothered by movement on the other side of the bed. I also felt that the mattress had a good mix of pressure relief and pushback.”

Leesa Original Breakdown

The Leesa Original rates as medium (5) on our firmness scale. It measures 10 inches thick and contains four layers, including the cover. The Leesa Original cover is a breathable knit blend of polyester and viscose.

Beneath the cover lies a 2-inch polyfoam comfort layer for cushioning. This layer is aerated with holes to promote airflow. All Leesa foams are CertiPUR-US certified, which means they are free from harmful chemicals like heavy metals, formaldehyde, certain phthalates, and PBDE flame retardants. Leesa’s foams are also free from fiberglass and have low VOC emissions.

Below the comfort layer, a 2-inch layer of memory foam provides additional cushioning and pressure relief. The support core contains 6 inches of high-density polyfoam. This layer provides stability for the entire mattress.

Casper One Breakdown

Just like the Leesa Original, the Casper One is an all-foam mattress that contains four layers, including the cover. The Casper One rates medium firm (6) on our firmness scale, so it is a bit firmer than the Leesa Original. It measures one inch taller than the Leesa Original with an 11-inch profile.

The cover of the Casper One is a soft-touch fabric made of polyester, polyethylene, and Lycra spandex. Beneath that sits a comfort layer of open-cell polyfoam. In addition to cushioning sleepers, this layer helps reduce the heat build-up that can be common in all-foam beds. Open-cell polyfoam is engineered with tiny holes that allow air to flow and heat to disperse. Another layer of memory foam provides additional cushioning.

The Casper One’s support core consists of high-density polyfoam . This layer provides the bed’s firmness and helps keep the mattress stable. Like the Leesa Original, the Casper One contains foams that are CertiPUR-US certified. The Casper One’s cover is also Oeko-Tex certified.

Mattress Sizing and Weight

Both mattresses are available in the following sizes: twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, and California king. The Casper One mattress is also sold in a split king size featuring two twin XL mattresses that, together, sit side-by-side in a king size bed frame. Although all-foam beds generally isolate motion well already, split king beds can virtually assure that one sleeper’s movements won’t travel across the surface of the bed and disturb a bed partner.

These mattresses share similar profiles, with the Leesa Original measuring in at 10 inches and the Casper One at 11 inches. Both also weigh more than 70 pounds, which means many people will need a partner when lifting or moving either mattress.

Performance Ratings

The Leesa Original and Casper One mattresses performed very similarly in our testing. As with many all-foam beds, both mattresses received their highest scores in motion isolation and pressure relief. People who share a bed with a partner likely won’t be bothered by their movements on these beds. Similarly, those who want to feel gently hugged by their mattress will enjoy these models.

While all-foam beds often receive lower scores on temperature regulation, these two both earned a 7 out of 10. The use of aeration in the Leesa Original comfort layer and open-cell polyfoam in the Casper One allow these mattresses to disperse heat better than some of their competitors. However, sleepers who tend to become very hot at night might want to avoid an all-foam bed altogether.

Even with their close similarities, these mattresses did rate somewhat differently due to their differences in firmness levels. Regardless of sleep position preference, sleepers weighing over 230 pounds reported that the Leesa Mattress couldn’t adequately support them. In contrast, side sleepers over 230 pounds found the Casper Mattress to provide adequate support. Both beds performed very well for side sleepers weighing up to 230 pounds.

Back sleepers weighing less than 230 pounds felt comfortable on the Casper One, while only back sleepers weighing less than 130 gave positive ratings to the Leesa Original. Among stomach sleepers, the Leesa Original didn’t rate well, but the Casper One earned favorable marks from those weighing less than 130 pounds.

Mattress Pricing

All-foam mattress models like the Leesa Original and Casper One generally cost less than latex, hybrid, or airbed mattresses. Because foam materials are synthetic, they are less expensive and don’t require as much labor to manufacture compared to natural latex, which must be first extracted from trees. Hybrid mattresses generally cost more than foam beds because of their coils, which are usually forged from steel.

The price of all-foam mattresses spans a wide range, and shoppers can find foam beds for as little as a few hundred dollars or as much as a few thousand. Both of these mattresses are on the more affordable side of this range, with the Leesa costing a couple hundred dollars more than the Casper One.

Both companies have very similar policies, including a 100-night sleep trial. Casper’s warranty covers defects for up to 10 years, while Leesa’s lifetime warranty covers defects for as long as you own the mattress. However, Leesa ships to Canada, and Casper does not. Leesa also ships to Alaska and Hawaii for free, while Casper charges a fee.

What Customers Are Saying

Customers give both of these “mattress-in-a-box” models positive reviews online. Reviewers also often mention the high value of each mattress for the price. Some customers have returned to update their online reviews a few years later to say that they are still greatly enjoying their mattresses two, three, or even five years after their purchase. Although uncommon, one complaint about the Leesa Original is that it off-gasses an unpleasant odor upon opening the box.

Many people remark on the beds’ softness and comfort, saying that they obtain high-quality sleep on the beds and experience less pain. However, some Casper reviewers have reported that their pain increased while sleeping on the bed, likely due to a mismatch between their body weight and the bed’s firmness level. In general, sleepers weighing over 230 pounds do not find either bed as comfortable as those weighing less than 230 pounds find them. Shoppers should carefully consider their body weight and sleep position preferences before choosing a bed.
