Picking the right mattress size is nearly as important as picking the right mattress model. Smaller sizes like a twin or full mattress offer a more economical option, but can feel cramped. Likewise, larger sizes like a king mattress feel spacious and luxurious, but are both more expensive and more difficult to transport.

A mattress’s height and weight are also worth considering. Weight may influence the type of frame that is best to use, and will certainly change how easy the mattress is to move. Height can affect how a mattress looks and feels, and how well it fits with various bed frames.

If you’re comparing DreamCloud vs. Saatva, there are a few things to consider. DreamCloud offers two hybrid mattresses, the DreamCloud Luxury Hybrid Mattress (aka the DreamCloud) and the DreamCloud Premier. Both offer similar medium firm feels. These models are available in the six standard mattress sizes, but DreamCloud does not offer split size options for couples with adjustable bed bases.

Saatva offers three mattresses designed for adults: the Saatva Classic, Saatva HD, and Saatva Latex Hybrid. All three of these models are available in the six standard mattress sizes, as well as split kings; additionally, the Saatva Classic is available in a split California king. Saatva also offers the Saatva Youth, a reversible innerspring intended for children. This model is available in twin, twin XL, and full sizes only.

The Saatva Classic is available in a few different configurations. Shoppers can choose between a soft, medium firm, or firm feel for their mattress. The mattress is also offered with an 11.5-inch or 14.5-inch profile; the taller option features a thicker support core. Considering these customizable features, the Saatva Classic offers more options than either DreamCloud model.

Other Saatva models are available in one firmness only. The Saatva HD is designed for people who weigh at least 230 pounds. This model is quite firm and stable thanks to its robust comfort and support layers. Shoppers in this weight group may want to consider the Saatva HD. The Saatva Latex Hybrid is medium firm, so it will not feel as firm as the Saatva HD, but this is another mattress that delivers strong support for people who weigh more than 230 pounds.

Construction and Materials Comparison

The design of each mattress model, as well as the materials used in its construction, will have a significant impact on the bed’s comfort, durability, and support. Below, we compare the construction of each model from DreamCloud and Saatva.

Before we get started, it’s helpful to understand the main differences between the different types of mattresses:

Hybrid mattresses use a mix of traditional metal coils and modern foam materials. Hybrids are versatile mattresses, offering the cushy comfort of foams and other materials with the deep support of coils.

Innerspring mattresses use metal coils, plush materials and sometimes thin layers of transition foam. They are in many cases a simpler, more affordable option. However, the Saatva Classic, Saatva’s flagship model, is an advanced innerspring that rivals high-quality hybrids, both in performance and price-point.

DreamCloud

The DreamCloud is a hybrid mattress made with:

The DreamCloud is a luxury hybrid featuring premium memory foam, supportive pocketed coils, and a cashmere-blend Euro-top padded with additional memory foam. It’s designed for supportive comfort that’s well-suited to a variety of sleep styles and comfort preferences. It’s available in just one option: “Luxury Firm”, which our testing rates at around a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale.

As a hybrid, the DreamCloud combines many of the positive features of innerspring and all-foam mattresses. Its support core is made up of individually pocketed metal coils. Because the coils are wrapped individually in fabric, they are able to move independently from one another. This allows for excellent contouring and conforming, while maintaining solid support.

Memory foam quilted into the cover creates a plush surface for the DreamCloud, creating a “body-hugging” feel characteristic of this material. The comfort layer of gel-infused memory foam also contours while drawing heat away from the body to help you sleep cool.

The DreamCloud is offered at a very approachable price-point. Despite offering many of the features of luxury mattresses, it’s priced well below the industry average. It’s also backed by a lifetime warranty, which adds significant value.

The DreamCloud Premier is a hybrid mattress made with:

• Quilted cashmere-blend cover
• Euro-top cushioned with 2.5″ of memory foam
• Gel-infused memory foam comfort layer
• Polyfoam transitional layer
• Pocketed coil support core
• High-density polyfoam base layer

As you can see, the DreamCloud Premier’s design is quite similar to the DreamCloud’s. One key difference is Euro-top construction. The DreamCloud Premier’s Euro-top is padded with an additional inch of memory foam, so the surface is even plusher compared to the DreamCloud’s. That said, the DreamCloud Premier is also considered medium firm (6).

Other components are the same for both beds. These include the cashmere-blend cover, gel-infused memory foam comfort layer, polyfoam transitional layer, and pocketed coil support core reinforced with high-density base foam. Due to their comparable components and feels, both DreamCloud mattresses have earned comparable ratings across all performance categories.

The DreamCloud and DreamCloud Premier measure 14 inches thick. Both are considered high-profile models. Buyers may need to purchase new sheets for their DreamCloud or DreamCloud Premier, as some bedding sets include fitted sheets that do not offer enough pocket depth.

The DreamCloud Premier costs more than the DreamCloud but its price-point is still reasonable compared to the average hybrid model. It also comes with a lifetime warranty.

Saatva

The Saatva Classic is an innerspring mattress made with:

The Saatva Classic is the flagship product in Saatva’s diverse lineup of beds. It’s an innerspring mattress, but its design is significantly more advanced than typical innersprings. The Saatva Classic utilizes a hybrid innerspring design, with two distinct layers of metal coils.

The support core consists of hourglass coils, in a layer that is either 4 or 7 inches thick, depending on your preferences. This layer provides the deep compression support, and gives the mattress its overall structure.

A thinner, 4-inch layer of foam-encased coils provides a more responsive and conforming feel. The coils are all individually pocketed and able to move independently from one another, adding to this bed’s responsive performance.

Unlike the DreamCloud, the Saatva Classic is available in several different configurations. Customers will have a choice of soft, medium, and firm versions, which measure at about 3, 6 or 8 out of 10 on the firmness scale. Additionally, two height options are available: 11.5 inches, or 14.5 inches. Each height configuration feels identical, so this is mostly a height and aesthetic choice.

The Saatva HD is a luxury hybrid made with:

• Organic cotton quilted pillow top
• 1.5” Talalay latex zoned comfort layer

The Saatva HD is a luxury hybrid innerspring mattress that’s designed for heavier people. It’s engineered to provide the deep support needed for sleepers weighing between 300 and 500 pounds. It combines plush upper layers with a high-durability coil base, for both cushy comfort and deep compression support. Talalay latex is used to provide extra bounce and responsiveness, while also helping to keep the bed cooler at night.

The Saatva HD is significantly more expensive than their other models. However, it’s tailor-made for a specific audience: heavier sleepers who want to invest in a durable, high-quality mattress.

The Saatva Latex Hybrid is made with:

• GOTS-certified organic cotton cover
• GOTS-certified organic wool fire barrier
• 3″ ventilated Talalay latex
• 8″ zoned pocketed coils (14.5-gauge perimeter, 13.75-gauge interior)
• Organic “Eco Loft” pad

The Saatva Latex Hybrid boasts an eco-friendly design. Its components include an organic cotton cover and an organic wool fire barrier, both of which have earned certification from the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). These materials also promote breathability and wick away moisture to help the surface feel cool.

The mattress also includes a 3-inch comfort layer of Talalay latex. This material conforms evenly to the body much like memory foam, but it is also more responsive and won’t “hug” as closely. The latex is ventilated with small holes for added airflow near the surface. Talalay latex is exceptionally durable, as well.

The Saatva Latex Hybrid’s support core consists of 8-inch pocketed coils over an organic Eco Loft pad. The coil system is zoned. Thicker 14.5-gauge coils are positioned around the perimeter to minimize sinkage when you get in and out of bed, while thinner, gentler 13.75-gauge coils make up the interior. The Eco Loft pad offers additional reinforcement for the coils.

The Saatva Latex Hybrid offers a medium firm (6) feel, which delivers comfortable cushioning for sleepers who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds, while its robust support system ensures adequate reinforcement for people who weigh more than 230 pounds. Altogether it measures 12 inches thick. The Saatva Latex Hybrid’s price-point is on par with the average hybrid model’s.

The Saatva Youth is a flippable innerspring mattress made with:

The Saatva Youth is a dual-sided innerspring mattress that’s designed to meet the needs of growing children. It’s available in twin, twin XL and full sizes. At first glance, many mattresses seem quite similar. However, on closer examination, key differences in materials, construction, features, and performance can be distinguished. Each of these factors are very important to the sleeper’s overall experience with a new mattress, and each should be closely considered. In this section, we will take a look at the main factors that contribute to a mattress’ overall performance, comfort, and value.

• Durability: Durability ratings refer to how well a mattress will hold up over time, and what its expected lifespan might be. During normal use, mattresses are put under significant strain. Supporting our bodies for 8 hours a night will take a toll on even the most high-quality mattresses. Most beds will last 5-10 years or so before they may need replacement. However, poorly constructed beds with cheaper materials may wear out far sooner than that. Durability plays a key role in a mattress’ longevity, and also its performance and comfort over time. A mattress could feel very comfortable and supportive on day one, but if it lacks a durable and well-designed construction, it could degrade rapidly and be far less comfortable within a few years.
• Motion Isolation: Motion isolation refers to how well a mattress keeps motion from one person from disturbing the opposite side of the bed. For couples, or parents who share their bed with a child, motion isolation is an important factor. Beds with good motion isolation will make it easier to change positions, or get in and out of bed without disturbing your sleeping partner. Beds utilising foam materials tend to perform well in this category, while innerspring and hybrid mattresses may transfer more motion.
• Sex: For couples, how a mattress feels during sex is something to consider. There are many factors that contribute to a mattress’ performance in this category, but some key components are support, bounce, cooling and edge support. Choosing an appropriate firmness level is also important. Beds that are too soft tend to sink in too much, restricting movement during sex. Likewise, very firm mattresses may feel uncomfortable. Typically, hybrid or all-foam mattresses with moderate firmness levels tend to perform best for couples.
• Temperature Neutrality: Temperature neutrality is a measure of how well a bed maintains a comfortable sleeping temperature. For those living in warm climates, or anyone who tends to sleep hot at night, this can be a very important factor. Some foam materials, like traditional memory foam, tend to trap body heat, leading to an uncomfortably warm sleeping experience. Thankfully, many manufacturers now use more advanced foams that have cooling properties built-in. Hybrid and innerspring mattresses also tend to perform better in this category, due to the increased airflow they allow for.
• Pressure Relief: Pressure relief is a measure of how well a bed distributes the impact of body weight throughout the mattress, reducing excessive pressure on common problem areas. Beds that are too soft or have poor pressure relief performance will often place too much pressure on the shoulders, hips, and lower back. The best mattresses for back pain will display a good balance of conforming and support. This helps alleviate pressure in problem areas, while still maintaining the strong support needed for proper spinal alignment.
• Off-gassing: For several days after initial set-up, most mattresses will release some odors. This is a result of so-called “off-gassing,” a process during which volatile organic compounds that are trapped in the foam materials are released. This can result in an unpleasant, chemical-like odor. Most modern mattresses will off-gas to some extent, but the duration and severity of the odors will depend on the materials that the manufacturer uses. Most of these odors come from the foam materials, so innerspring beds will off-gas less than all-foam models.
• Ease of Movement: Ease of movement is a measure of how even the surface of the mattress feels, and how easy it is to change positions. Excessively soft mattresses tend to have poor ease of movement, because the body sinks into them further. Firmer beds with a more responsive, bouncy feel will tend to have better ease of movement. This factor is important for those with limited mobility, and for couples concerned with their mattress’ performance during sex.
• Edge Support: Edge support refers to how much a mattress sags when pressure is applied around the outer perimeter of the bed. A bed’s degree of edge support is most noticeable when you’re sitting on the edge of the mattress, sleeping near the edge, or getting in and out of bed. The biggest impact on the performance of a mattress in this category is the material that is used for the support core of the bed. Hybrid and innerspring mattresses tend to score well, while all-foam models usually have less edge support.

Prices and Sizing

A new mattress is a major purchase, and the price point of each model will be an important consideration for most buyers. You don’t want to cut corners when it comes to mattresses, but that doesn’t mean you need to overpay, either. For a high-quality queen mattress, you can typically expect to pay around $1,500 to $2,000 – but there are models available for as little as a few hundred, and as much as $3,000+.

The pricing of various mattress models depends on a variety of factors. The biggest variables are the mattress type (innerspring, hybrid, or all-foam), the quality of the materials and craftsmanship, and any unique features that the mattress offers. Generally speaking, all-foam and innerspring beds are typically the least expensive, while hybrids cost more. Secondary factors like the warranty, return policy, or shipping costs can also impact the purchase price.

The DreamCloud models are on par with the Saatva Classic in terms of cost, as well as construction and overall performance. All three carry reasonable price-points compared to average hybrid and innerspring models from online mattress brands.

The Saatva Latex Hybrid costs a bit more, but its price-point is still in line with the average hybrid model. The Saatva HD is the brand’s most expensive mattress. Its sticker price is above-average for a hybrid.

Trials, Warranty, and Delivery

Shipping

DreamCloud and Saatva both offer free shipping within the contiguous U.S. DreamCloud customers in Alaska, Hawaii, and Guam must pay additional delivery charges. Saatva does not offer shipping to these locations, but in some cases they can help customers coordinate their mattress delivery with local couriers.

Saatva offers free White Glove delivery, meaning they send people to your home to complete an in-home delivery and set-up.

DreamCloud uses ground shipping services, so the mattress will ship compressed in a box, and will need to be set up by the purchaser. Shipping time for both companies depends on your location, but most orders will arrive within 7 to 10 business days.

Returns

Returns are allowed by both companies, during their “sleep trial” periods.

DreamCloud offers a full year sleep trial, so you can return the mattress at any point during the first 365 days. However, they require a mandatory 30-day break-in period, to allow for adequate time to really evaluate the mattress. There are no return costs or fees from DreamCloud.

Saatva offers returns during their 365-day sleep trial. There is no mandatory break-in period. Saatva will coordinate a pickup of the mattress. There is a $99 return fee, however, to cover the costs of transportation.

Both companies will typically work to donate returned mattresses to local charities, whenever possible.

Warranties

Both Saatva and DreamCloud offer lifetime warranties on their mattresses. These manufacturer warranties are intended to protect consumers from damage to their mattresses due to a manufacturer defect. In other words, these warranties cover damage that is caused by errors in craftsmanship, faulty materials, and the like, but do not cover damage caused by normal wear-and-tear or accidents. The warranties come with the mattress, so you do not have to pay for them separately. There may be fees associated with actually making a warranty claim, however.

For the first 10 years, the DreamCloud Mattress will be replaced at no cost. After 10 years, the mattress will be repaired or replaced, but the customer may be responsible for shipping costs of $50 each way. If a covered defect is detected and the warranty claim verified, this shipping cost will be refunded to the customer.

For the first two years, Saatva will repair or replace any defective mattress at no extra charge to the owner. Beginning in the third year, Saatva charges a transportation fee of $149; otherwise, repairs and replacements are still free.

In addition to the standard warranty, Saatva offers the ‘Fairness Replacement Option’ for all mattresses. Under this coverage option, repairs and replacements are still free for the first two years. Beginning in the third year, you can replace your mattress if it develops a defect by paying a certain percentage of the original sticker price. This percentage depends on how long you’ve owned the mattress, and will range from 40% to 80%. You’ll also get to keep the damaged mattress in addition to its replacement.
