Comparing mattresses is no easy feat, but our team of experts has it down to a science. We test every model we review in our Seattle-based sleep lab. To date, we’ve evaluated nearly 2,000 mattresses and continue to review new models every week. With similar materials, constructions, price-points, and firmness levels, it’s tough to pick between the DreamCloud Memory Foam Mattress and Casper One. They’re both affordable, medium firm (6), all-foam mattresses that received similar scores in our Seattle Test Lab. That said, there are a few key differences between the two.

The DreamCloud has more layers within its comfort system than the Casper One. As a result, its surface is a bit plusher and more compressive than the Casper’s, which has a top layer made of responsive polyfoam. People looking for a mattress with memory foam’s deep hug should look to the DreamCloud, and those who prefer a more even sleep surface may want to opt for the Casper One.

DreamCloud Memory Foam Mattress Breakdown

The DreamCloud Memory Foam Mattress uses polyfoam and memory foam to achieve its medium firm (6) feel. The pillow-top has a cashmere blend cover and is quilted directly into the first two layers of gel-infused memory foam and polyfoam. Together, these materials give sleepers a supportive, plush, and breathable sleep surface. 

Underneath the pillow-top, there’s an additional 2-inch layer of gel-infused memory foam that hugs your body to cushion impact zones like your hips, shoulders, neck, and lower back. The gel infusion is included to help prevent body heat retention. A 1-inch polyfoam transitional layer distributes weight and keeps your spine on an even plane while preventing back pain. The support core is a 9-inch layer of high-density polyfoam that absorbs movement and creates structure for the layers above. 

The bottom cover has handles for easier lifting and a shift-resistant fabric designed to prevent the mattress from moving on its foundation. This mattress is also available as a hybrid called the DreamCloud Hybrid Mattress. If you prefer foam but want a more luxe option, you can choose the upgraded DreamCloud Premier or DreamCloud Premier Rest, which are elevated versions of the DreamCloud Hybrid Mattress.

Casper One Breakdown

The Casper One is a medium firm mattress that ranks as a 6 on our 10-point firmness scale. Like the DreamCloud, it uses both memory foam and polyfoam in its construction. The top comfort layer consists of proprietary Breathe Flex polyfoam that’s engineered to contour alongside your body while enhancing airflow. It has an open cell structure that’s meant to fight against heat build up.

The middle layer is a memory foam transitional layer that’s also crafted from one of Casper’s patented foams. Align memory foam deepens pressure relief while aiming to achieve spinal alignment, as its name implies. The support core is made of high-density polyfoam that’s stable and supportive. A cover made from a soft poly-Lycra spandex blend encases the mattress. 

The One isn’t available as a hybrid mattress, but the company offers The Dream Hybrid and Snow Hybrid, which are one notch softer than the One.

Mattress Sizing and Weight

Size-wise, the Casper One and DreamCloud are quite similar. The DreamCloud measures 12 inches tall and weighs 78 pounds, while the Casper One is 11 inches tall and 76 pounds. Both models should fit well within standard fitted sheets. They also come in the same standard size range: twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, and California king, as well as split king.

Performance Ratings

Because they share comparable designs, these mattresses have similar pros and cons. Memory foam mattresses have a reputation for alleviating pressure better than most other mattress types. The Casper One and DreamCloud Memory Foam Mattress maintain their rep by providing top-notch pressure relief. They’re excellent at adapting to your body’s shape and decreasing how much impact you feel beneath joints and sore spots. 

They both also offer effective motion isolation, which can be particularly helpful for couples. If you’re prone to waking up when you feel movement, you should be able to sleep soundly on either of these beds. In the con column, neither bed is very strong around the perimeter. It may be tough to get in and out of either bed, especially if you have mobility limitations.

Memory foam generally sleeps hotter than other mattress materials because it’s incredibly dense, so there’s little room for airflow. The DreamCloud aims to combat heat retention with gel infusions, but our team found that the Casper One’s open-cell foam was more successful at regulating temperature. It’s not as cool as most hybrids but it’s a solid choice for hot sleepers who like foam. 

During sleep trials, the Casper One and DreamCloud Memory Foam Mattress got remarkably similar scores. Overall, they were favored by the side and back sleepers on our team, with side sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds and back sleepers under 130 pounds finding them most comfortable. The Casper One is a bit better suited to stomach sleepers, but both are too compressive to keep stomach sleepers from feeling restricted while sleeping.

The DreamCloud and Casper One are budget-friendly options with price-points on the low end of what’s typical for a memory foam mattress. Most mattress-in-a-box models average between $700 and $1,200. You’ll find these two beds on the low end of that range with sticker prices that are close to one another. DreamCloud and Casper also regularly put these models on sale, so keep an eye out for further savings. 

We found the Casper One slightly more durable than the DreamCloud, though both should last up to or beyond the average lifespan of a memory foam mattress. The DreamCloud comes with a longer sleep trial and warranty than the Casper One, which may be an important consideration.

What Customers Are Saying

People who own the Casper One like how balanced it feels, especially back sleepers and people who want a truly medium firm mattress. It also gets solid reviews for its temperature regulation and breathability. Some side sleepers found it too firm for their liking and would have preferred a plusher feeling surface. 

The DreamCloud also got favorable reviews regarding its feel. Owners like how the mattress gives you a hug without the sensation that its layers are swallowing you. It also gets high marks for durability, but some reviewers say body impressions do develop over time. For certain customers, its main drawback is heat retention.
