Full Mattress ReviewThe Casper One and the Lull Original are the flagship all-foam mattresses for their respective companies. Casper and Lull both began as US-based businesses selling all-foam mattresses directly to shoppers. Casper was founded in 2014 and Lull in 2015. Casper has since been bought by Carpenter Co., an international foam manufacturing company, but maintains US headquarters. Lull is still privately owned. Both beds are assembled in the US, though Casper uses internationally made materials.
The Casper One and Lull Original share similar constructions and materials and are sold at nearly identical prices. Figuring out which one might be better for you could be tricky, which is why we brought both beds into our Seattle-based Test Lab to see how they compare in our rigorous tests. We also scoured online customer reviews of both mattresses and compared their companies’ policies, such as sleep trials and warranties.

Our Testing Team’s Take
Over the past decade, our testing team has evaluated nearly 2,000 mattresses in our Seattle Test Lab. Through this hands-on testing, we’ve developed a unique product research methodology that forms the backbone of our mattress rating system.
Using cutting-edge technology, we pressure map each bed to identify where pressure points may form. We use similarly advanced tools to measure motion transfer across each mattress’ surface and heat retention.
We also have testing team members take mattresses home for weeks at a time, allowing them to mimic real-world use. Because our team members represent a variety of body weights and sleep position preferences, their perspectives can help you identify which might be the best mattress for you.
Our Verdict
As all-foam beds with medium-firm (6) firmness levels and near identical prices, the Casper One and Lull Original have a lot in common. They both rate highly on pressure relief and motion isolation, making them potentially good options for people who experience chronic pain as well as couples who share a bed. The mattresses also share below-average scores in ease of movement and edge support, which could mean some sleepers don’t feel secure sitting or lying near the bed’s edges.

“One of the things that stood out the most to me was how well the Casper One absorbed motion. I liked that I wasn’t bothered by movement on the other side of the bed. I also felt that the mattress had a good mix of pressure relief and pushback.”
There are differences between the beds, too. The Casper One beat the Lull Original in terms of controlling temperature, making it more attractive to people who sleep hot. Side sleepers of all body weights were able to find comfort on both beds. Back sleepers weighing between 130 and 230 pounds enjoyed both beds, and back sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds also liked the Casper One. Stomach sleepers weighing less than 130 liked the Casper, as well, but stomach sleepers of all body weights couldn’t find the support they desired on the Lull Original.

“The Lull Original is a pretty solid memory foam mattress that cushions and contours without sinking too much. This would be a good choice for anyone with persistent aches and pains.”
Construction and Materials
The Casper One and the Lull Original share very similar materials and constructions. Both are all-foam beds with polyester blend covers that contain one comfort layer and one transitional layer above a polyfoam support core. However, there are minor differences between them.
Construction Analysis | Casper One | Lull Original |
---|---|---|
Cover | Polyester, polyethylene, and Lycra blend | Polyester and rayon |
Comfort Layer | Polyfoam | 1.5″ memory foam (gel-infused) |
Transitional Layer | Memory foam | 1.5″ polyfoam |

Casper One Breakdown
The Casper One is an all-foam mattress that rates medium firm, or 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale. The mattress is 11 inches thick, which makes space for four layers. The top layer is the cover, which is made of a blend of polyester, polyethylene, and Lycra. The company says this layer has been designed to feel soft to the touch.
Beneath the cover, there’s a layer of open-cell polyfoam. This acts as a comfort layer and lightly “hugs” the body. Open-cell polyfoam contains small pockets that allow heat to disperse, so heat is less likely to build up beneath sleepers, which is common on all-foam beds. Beneath the comfort layer is a memory foam transitional layer. This layer also cushions sleepers, but it’s a bit firmer and protects sleepers from sinking down and hitting the support core.
The Casper One’s support core is a layer of high-density polyfoam. This layer adds stability to the bed and contributes to its firmness. This layer also helps the bed stay durable over time. All foams in the Casper one are CertiPUR-US certified and the cover is Oeko-text certified. These certifications ensure that the mattress is free from potentially harmful substances, like heavy metals, formaldehyde, and certain flame retardants.
Lull Original Breakdown
Like the Casper One, the Lull Original is an all-foam mattress with medium-firm (6) firmness. Its profile measures 10 inches in thickness, which is one inch shorter than the Casper One. The Lull Original similarly contains four layers, including the cover. Its cover is made of polyester and rayon, and the company says it was designed to be both soft and breathable.
Beneath the cover sits a 1.5-inch gel-infused memory foam comfort layer. This layer “hugs” the body, conforming to the sleeper to provide pressure relief. An infusion of gel beads is intended to help the layer disperse heat and keep sleepers cool. Beneath the comfort layer sits a 1.5-inch polyfoam transitional layer. A bit denser than the comfort layer, this layer also provides cushion, while promoting spinal alignment.
The next layer down is the support core, which is a 7-inch polyfoam layer. This layer adds stability, firmness, and durability to the mattress. Like the Casper One, the Lull only contains foams that are CertiPUR-US certified.
Mattress Sizing and Weight
Both the Lull Original and the Casper One are sold in twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, and California king sizes. The Casper One is also available in split king size. Split kings are king sized mattresses that come in two pieces, which virtually removes motion transfer across the bed’s surface.
The Casper One and Lull Original measure 11 and 10 inches in height, respectively. Both can easily fit standard fitted sheets. They both weigh just over 75 pounds. While some people may be able to lift this amount alone, many should consider enlisting help when lifting in order to avoid injury.
Sizing Options
There are many factors to take into account when selecting the size of your new mattress. Most importantly, who will be sleeping on the mattress? If shopping for yourself, do you share a bed with a partner? If so, what is their preferred sleeping position, and how is it similar or different to your own? Do your pets often sleep in the bed with you?
What about body type? A very tall individual, a light sleeper who moves around a lot, and a couple who are both heavyset will all need larger mattresses, while a California king may be too large for a solo sleeper or a child. Likewise, an overly tall model may not be the best option for children or individuals with mobility issues.
Mattress Model | Profile | Weight (Queen) |
---|---|---|
Casper One | 11″ | 76 lbs. |
Lull Original | 10″ | 77 lbs. |
Performance Ratings
Like many all-foam mattresses, the Casper One and Lull Original perform their best in the categories of pressure relief and motion isolation. Both beds “hug” the body a bit and relieve pressure for sleepers whose body weights work well with their firmness levels. Their foams readily absorb motion, a feature that couples who share a bed often enjoy.
All-foam beds can tend to retain heat, but this is an area in which the Casper One stands out. It received above-average ratings in terms of temperature control, likely due to its open-cell polyfoam comfort layer. The Lull Original received below-average temperature control ratings, which is common for all-foam mattresses. Both beds received below-average ratings in edge support, ease of movement, and off-gassing odors.
Because these beds are both medium firm (6), there’s overlap in which sleepers prefer them. But, there are also differences. The Casper One scored exceptionally well among side sleepers weighing between 130 and 230 pounds and back sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds.
The Casper One also provided adequate support to side sleepers outside of that weight range, back sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds, and stomach sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds. The Lull rated highest among back and side sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds, and also provided adequate support to side sleepers outside of that range. Stomach sleepers weighing over 130 pounds probably won’t feel properly supported by either bed.
Mattress Pricing
In general, all-foam mattresses cost less than other types of mattresses, like hybrid and latex models. This price difference stems from differences in the cost of materials. Foam is synthetically produced and costs less than the steel that must be mined for coils in hybrids and the natural latex that must be harvested from trees for latex beds.
The Casper One and Lull Original fall on the more affordable end of the all-foam mattress price spectrum, but they aren’t the cheapest models available. These beds sell for nearly identical prices, likely because they contain very similar materials. Although their policies are similar, Lull offers a longer sleep trial and longer warranty, while Casper offers White Glove Delivery for a fee and Lull does not.

What Customers Are Saying

About both models, happy customers commonly remark that their sleep has improved since they’ve begun sleeping on the bed. Reviewers also often praise the beds for being easy to set up and for being sold at affordable prices given their high value.
The Casper One and Lull Original share similar complaints across their negative reviews. Some sleepers complain that these beds aren’t firm enough to provide adequate support.
