Brooklyn Bedding and Purple are two leading players in the online mattress industry. Brooklyn Bedding originally launched with a few brick-and-mortar stores 25 years ago and soon moved towards an online model. Purple made a splash online in 2016 with the debut of the Purple Mattress, featuring its proprietary Purple Grid. Both companies offer a variety of mattress models with diverse price-points, construction, firmness options, and sizes.

Purple’s lineup includes four mattress models: the flagship Purple Mattress, the Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier models featuring pocketed coils for added responsiveness, and the new Purple Kid Mattress for younger sleepers.

Brooklyn Bedding currently offers the all-foam Brooklyn Bowery as well as six hybrid models: the Brooklyn Signature, Aurora, Sedona, Spartan, Bloom, and Bowery Hybrids.

While it’s nice to have a wealth of options, this can sometimes make it difficult to narrow down which mattress is right for you. We’ll examine how the mattresses from each company measure up in terms of performance, materials, price, size, shipping, and warranty policies to help you make your decision.

Sizing Options

When choosing your mattress, it is important to consider mattress size. Most sleepers want a mattress that’s comfortable to stretch out on and that offers enough room for undisturbed sleep. However, you also need to ensure that the mattress you choose will easily fit in the space you have, without blocking pathways or other furniture.

The height of a mattress is also important. Depending on the height of your bed frame, a higher mattress might be easier to access for those with hip or back issues, while a lower bed might make it easier for kids or pets to climb into. If you opt for a taller mattress, you may also need to purchase deep-pocket fitted sheets.

Mattress weight might become a factor if you like to rearrange your furniture often, or if you anticipate moving houses. Rotating your mattress to prevent body impressions is also easier with a lighter mattress, especially if you live by yourself.

Mattress size could be a deciding factor when choosing between a mattress from Purple or a mattress from Brooklyn Bedding. Brooklyn Bedding sells mattresses in all six standard mattress sizes. The company also offers custom sizes for many mattresses, including mattresses that are designed to fit in an RV. Purple mattress sizing is more limited. Not all Purple models are available in twin size, although they do offer more models in split king, as well as a mattress designed specifically for kids.

Brooklyn Bedding’s mattress profiles measure from 10 to 14 inches, and Purple’s range from 9.25 to 13 inches. These profiles mostly fall within the standard mattress height range. At 9.25 inches, the Purple Mattress is shorter than average and may appeal to shoppers working with limited space.

The standard mattresses by Brooklyn Bedding and Purple weigh approximately 100 to 120 pounds, which is about average for a hybrid mattress. The Purple Hybrid Premier models weigh a little more due to their thicker comfort section.

Construction and Materials Comparison

The way a mattress is put together and the materials used to construct it can impact its quality, durability, and overall performance.

While there are many variations, most mattresses include a comfort section and a support core. The comfort section comprises the layers near the top of the mattress. These layers determine how the mattress feels against a sleeper’s body. The support core lies beneath the comfort section and is usually composed of hardier materials that provide spinal support and structure for the bed.

Mattresses can be categorized into several broad types depending on the materials used to make the comfort and support layers. All-foam mattresses are generally constructed with a polyfoam support core, while hybrid mattresses contain innerspring coils instead. Both mattress types have a substantial comfort system that may contain materials such as polyfoam, memory foam, or latex.

Brooklyn Bedding

The Brooklyn Bedding product line includes a variety of hybrid mattresses. Each hybrid model has a support core made with pocketed coils, which offer improved motion isolation compared to regular innersprings. The comfort layers vary significantly from model to model, with each mattress geared toward a particular sleeper type.

The Bowery Hybrid is Brooklyn Bedding’s most affordable hybrid model. The mattress is medium firm (6) and is composed of:

  • 1-inch quilted gel memory foam
  • 2 inches of transition polyfoam
  • 6 inches of pocketed coils (up to 1,032)
  • 1 inch of base support polyfoam

The Bowery Hybrid is priced very competitively for a hybrid mattress. Although the comfort section is relatively thin, the mattress delivers strong pressure relief. The memory foam also contains gel infusions designed to reduce heat retention.

The Brooklyn Signature Hybrid is the company’s most popular mattress, featuring a proprietary type of polyfoam called TitanFlex that’s engineered to have the resilience of latex and the pressure relief of memory foam. Overall, the mattress contains:

  • Quilted cover
  • 1.5 inches of TitanFlex polyfoam
  • 1 inch of VariFlex transition polyfoam
  • 8 inches of pocketed coils
  • 0.25 inches of base support polyfoam

The Brooklyn Signature Hybrid is offered in a variety of firmness options: medium soft (4), medium firm (6), and firm (8), with slight differences in the foams depending on the chosen firmness.

Like the Signature Hybrid, the Brooklyn Aurora Hybrid offers three firmness levels to choose from: medium soft (4), medium firm (6), or firm (7). The exact composition of the foams may vary between firmness levels, but in general, the mattress consists of:

  • 1.5 inches of polyfoam with copper infusions and phase change material
  • 2 inches of TitanFlex polyfoam
  • 1 inch of gel-infused memory foam
  • 8 inches of pocketed coils
  • 1 inch of polyfoam

The Aurora Hybrid is designed for hot sleepers. The mattress features a cooling cover, as well as a top layer infused with copper and coated with phase change material for better temperature neutrality.

For those who prefer a softer mattress, the Brooklyn Sedona Hybrid contains multiple layers of pressure-relieving memory foam that put it at a medium (5) firmness level:

  • 1 inch of polyfoam
  • 2 inches of gel-infused memory foam
  • 1 inch of denser gel-infused memory foam
  • 1 inch of transition polyfoam
  • 8 inches of pocketed coils
  • 1 inch high-density, base support polyfoam

The mattress cover is infused with phase change material that draws heat away from the sleeper to help keep the sleep surface cool

The Brooklyn Spartan Hybrid stands out for its cover, which incorporates infrared technology designed to convert a sleeper’s body heat into energy. This energy is reflected back at the sleeper with the aim of promoting quicker muscle recovery and higher-quality sleep. The mattress includes many of the same temperature-regulating elements as the other models in Brooklyn Bedding’s lineup, including:

  • 1.5 inches of polyfoam with copper infusions and phase change material
  • 2 inches of TitanFlex polyfoam
  • 1 inch of gel-infused memory foam
  • 8 inches pocketed coils
  • 1 inch of high-density polyfoam

Brooklyn Bedding offers this model in a variety of firmness options including medium soft (4), medium firm (6), and firm (7).

Purple

Purple’s famous Purple Grid is made from a hyper-elastic polymer arranged in columns that buckle under the sleeper’s body, providing contouring pressure relief and exceptional temperature neutrality. Purple currently offers one all-foam mattress, three hybrid models, and a mattress for children. All five mattresses incorporate the Purple Grid.

The flagship Purple Mattress is medium firm (6). The mattress comprises a layer of Purple Grid over several layers of polyfoam for deeper contouring and support:

  • 2 inches of Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple Grid
  • 3.5 inches of polyfoam, divided into two layers
  • 4 inches of base support polyfoam

This mattress also comes with a breathable stretch-knit cover made with a viscose, polyester, and lycra blend.

The Purple Hybrid combines the pressure-relieving properties of the Purple Grid with a foundational layer of responsive pocketed coils. This mattress is medium firm (6) and includes the following layers:

  • 2 inches of Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple Grid
  • 1 inch of polyfoam
  • 7.5 inches of pocketed support coils
  • High-density polyfoam base

Pocketed coils add bounce and edge support for sleepers who like to make full use of the bed. Because they are individually wrapped, the coils allow for minimal motion transfer and shouldn’t cause too many disturbances to a sleeping partner.

Those who want a thicker layer of Purple Grid can choose between two Purple Hybrid Premier models. The Purple Hybrid Premier with 3 inches of Purple Grid offers a bouncier medium firm (6) feel, while the Purple Hybrid Premier with 4 inches of Purple Grid offers a medium (5) firmness level with deeper pressure relief for side sleepers. Other than the top layer, the two mattresses are identical:

  • 3 inches or 4 inches of Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple Grid
  • 1 inch of polyfoam
  • 7.5 inches of pocketed support coils
  • High-density polyfoam base

As with the Purple and the Purple Hybrid, these mattresses feature a stretchy cover that is designed to flex in tandem with the Purple Grid.

One of Purple’s newer offerings is the Purple Kid Mattress. This mattress is similar to the flagship Purple Mattress, but it has a shorter profile and added edge support. The mattress has just three layers:

  • 2 inches of Purple Grid with polyfoam perimeter
  • 2.5 inches of transition polyfoam
  • 2.5 inches of support polyfoam

The Purple Kid Mattress is medium firm (6) and comes with a machine-washable cover. It is only sold in a twin size.

Pricing Information

Sometimes it can be difficult to determine why some mattresses cost more than others, and to decide if what you’re paying is worth the price.

A few factors that contribute to the price of a mattress include its materials, thickness, and any special features such as advanced temperature control. You can usually expect to pay more for thicker mattresses or those with organic or proprietary materials. A pocketed coil base, such as the one found in a hybrid, can also raise the price compared to an all-foam mattress.

Brooklyn Bedding and Purple offer a wide range of price-points, from budget-friendly to high-end.

Most of the Purple and Brooklyn Bedding mattresses fall within the expected price range for a hybrid mattress. The Brooklyn Bedding models increase incrementally in price as they add more special features, such as temperature-regulating copper infusions and phase change material. The Purple Hybrid Premier is the most expensive bed on the list, due to its thicker layer of proprietary Purple Grid.

Both companies also offer a few affordable options for price-conscious shoppers, such as the all-foam Purple Mattress and the Brooklyn Signature models. Understandably, the Purple Kid Mattress has the lowest price-point.

Overall, both shoppers with a restricted budget as well as those who are willing to pay more for premium features should be able to find what they’re looking for at either Brooklyn Bedding or Purple.

Mattress Performance Ratings

With so many models to choose from, shopping for a mattress can be overwhelming. Before you start looking, it’s helpful to make a list of the features that are most important to you. These may vary from person to person, but we’ll examine some of the most pertinent factors to consider when buying a mattress.

Durability
A mattress is an investment, and hopefully one that will last you many years. Sleeping on a mattress that has lost its shape or isn’t as supportive as it used to be can take a toll on your body, so it’s crucial to choose a mattress made with a durable design and high-quality materials.

Motion Isolation
Light sleepers who wake up at their sleep partner’s smallest movements may want to invest in a mattress with strong motion isolation. All-foam mattresses and those with thick memory foam layers in the comfort section tend to be best at absorbing movement to prevent it from disturbing a sleep partner. Hybrid mattresses with individually wrapped coils instead of interconnected innersprings can also reduce motion transfer.

Sex
Certain mattresses can be more conducive to sex than others. Mattresses that are too soft may restrict movement during sex, while those that are too firm may cause uncomfortable pressure points. The best mattresses for sex are typically those with some bounce, such as a hybrid or latex mattress. Some couples also value a mattress that stays cool, provides reliable edge support, and makes little to no noise.

Temperature Neutrality
A cool sleep surface is important for sleep quality, especially for people who tend to run hot or those who live in a warm climate. Breathable materials or designs that allow for airflow, such as innersprings, can help the mattress maintain a neutral temperature overnight. Because memory foam can trap heat, many all-foam beds include specialty materials such as gel infusions or phase change material to draw heat away from the sleeper.

Pressure Relief
Your mattress should support your body so that you wake up feeling refreshed without any muscle aches or joint pains. If a mattress rates high in pressure relief, that means it evenly distributes your body weight, reducing the tension placed on your neck, shoulders, hips, and lower back. Generally, the best pressure relief is found in medium to firm mattresses that contour somewhat to your body while still supporting your spine.

Off-Gassing
After setting up a new mattress, you may notice a faint smell. If your mattress contains polyfoam or memory foam, then the scent is likely due to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced during the foam manufacturing process. Off-gassing is not considered harmful, but it can last up to a few days depending on the mattress composition. If you’re bothered by off-gassing smells, you can opt for a mattress made with natural materials or leave your mattress to air out for a few days before using it.

Ease of Movement
A mattress is said to offer good ease of movement if you can change positions without much effort. Firmer mattresses usually allow for easier movement, because they don’t conform as closely to the sleeper. Hybrid and latex mattresses also provide pushback that facilitates movement. By contrast, softer mattresses allow the sleeper to sink in further, making it more difficult to change positions. Ease of movement may be particularly important for people with mobility issues.

Edge Support
A mattress with strong edges can give you more confidence when sleeping near or sitting on the edge of a mattress. Reliable edges are also helpful for people who have trouble getting in and out of bed, and they allow both partners to spread out and use the full surface of the bed. Soft mattresses and all-foam models tend to lack edge support. If this feature is important to you, considering choosing a hybrid or innerspring model with a reinforced perimeter.

Most beds sold online are either sent as a mattress-in-a-box or via White Glove delivery.

These mattresses are compressed, shrink-wrapped, and shipped in a cardboard box. When you receive your mattress, ask a friend to help you carry it to your room and place it on the mattress foundation, then carefully open the box and remove the plastic. The mattress will expand almost immediately to its full size. Most mattress-in-a-box companies offer free shipping to the contiguous U.S., but may charge shipping fees for customers in Alaska and Hawaii.

Some mattress companies may also offer White Glove delivery, in which a third-party company provides helpers to deliver and set up the mattress for you. In some cases, the delivery team can also remove your old mattress. White Glove delivery often carries an extra fee, and it may not always be available.

Brooklyn Bedding Shipping Policies

Brooklyn Bedding mattresses ship for free to the contiguous U.S. via FedEx Ground, with an extra fee for customers in Hawaii, Alaska, and Canada. Beds are shipped as a mattress-in-a-box and usually arrive within 3 to 5 business days. Brooklyn Bedding does not offer White Glove delivery.

Purple Shipping Policies

Like Brooklyn Bedding, Purple offers free mattress-in-a-box shipping via FedEx Ground to customers in the contiguous U.S., with an extra fee for Hawaii, Alaska, and Canada. Usually, mattresses are shipped from the warehouse within 3 to 5 business days, and take another 3 to 5 business days to arrive at your home. Heavier mattresses are delivered with complimentary White Glove delivery. For an extra fee, customers in the contiguous U.S. can also choose White Glove delivery and old mattress removal for select other models.

Sleep Trial and Returns

Most companies that sell mattresses online offer a sleep trial to allow customers time to try out the mattress before committing to it. Some companies require customers to sleep on the mattress for a set amount of time before initiating a return, usually a few weeks.

Customers who choose to return the mattress during the sleep trial typically receive a full refund or an exchange, if requested. Companies may arrange to pick up the mattress, or they may ask customers to donate it locally and provide a receipt. In some cases, customers may be responsible for return shipping costs or a nominal restocking fee.

Brooklyn Bedding Sleep Trial and Return Policy

Brooklyn Bedding offers a 120-night sleep trial with a mandatory 30-night break-in period. If you are unsatisfied with the mattress, Brooklyn Bedding may first suggest a different model for an exchange or offer a mattress topper to adjust the feel of the comfort layer before proceeding with the refund. Shipping is free for all returns and exchanges for customers in the contiguous U.S.

Purple Sleep Trial and Return Policy

Purple offers a 100-night sleep trial. During this time, customers can return the mattress for a full refund of the product price or exchange it for another model, providing the mattress is clean and undamaged. The company requires customers to complete a 21-night break-in period before initiating a return.

Warranty

Warranties are put in place to protect customers against defects in materials or workmanship. Warranties do not cover normal wear-and-tear or user errors, so be sure to properly care for your mattress according to the company’s guidelines. Most companies will provide either a repair or replacement for mattresses that are deemed damaged under the terms of the warranty. Customers may need to pay return shipping costs.

Brooklyn Bedding Mattress Warranty

Brooklyn Bedding offers a 10-year limited warranty against workmanship and manufacturing defects, including splitting or cracking of the foams and sagging or indentations of at least 1 inch. It is the customer’s responsibility to adequately care for the mattress, including providing a proper foundation. Brooklyn Bedding will repair or replace damaged mattresses, providing they have not been improperly cared for or intentionally damaged.

Purple Mattress Warranty

Purple Mattress also offers a 10-year limited warranty. The company will repair or replace defective mattresses. Eligible defects include excessive indentation or cracking and splitting of materials, not including firmness and comfort preferences. Soiled mattresses and mattresses that have been used without a proper foundation are not eligible for warranty coverage. The cover has a separate warranty of 2 years. Customers may be responsible for inspection or transportation costs associated with the refund or exchange.
