The Signature is a hybrid mattress with all the hallmarks you’d expect – it’s responsive, strong along the edges, and balanced in terms of cushioning and spinal support. It sleeps cool and is supportive for back and side sleepers under 230 pounds. It’s also priced competitively and is an excellent pick if you’re looking for an affordable hybrid. 

The Purple is all-foam, so it has an inherently different feel than the Signature. It’s better at relieving pressure points and isolating motion. If you have hip or joint pain, it’s a great pick. The Purple sleeps warmer than the Signature Hybrid, but better at regulating temperature than other foam beds thanks to its Purple Grid system. If you’re a back sleeper or side sleeper, this mattress is an excellent pick. 

Stomach sleepers and people over 230 pounds may want to look to other models like the Brooklyn Bedding Spartan or the Purple Restore Mattress, which are better suited for sleepers needing stronger support.

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Breakdown

Brooklyn Bedding offers its Signature Hybrid in three firmness levels that have slightly different material compositions. They call their three models Soft, Medium, and Firm, which correspond to medium soft (4), medium firm (6), and firm (8) on our 10-point scale. 

All versions of the Signature feature a cotton cover with polyfoam quilted into the fabric. The Soft and Medium models have thicker polyfoam layers to increase cushioning and give the bed a plusher feel. The next comfort layer is made from patented polyfoam called TitanFlex that’s engineered to feel more responsive and less compressive than traditional foam. The Firm model has 1 inch of this foam while the softer models have 1.5 inches. 

The transitional layer is also made from polyfoam. The Soft and Medium models have 1 inch, while the Firm has 2 inches. This foam, called VariFlex, is formulated to compress and contour alongside your body to relieve pressure and disperse your weight evenly. 

All three firmness options have an 8-inch pocketed coil support core with independently wrapped coils. They move separately from one another to minimize motion transfer across the bed’s surface. The perimeter coils are made from thicker steel to ensure that you don’t roll toward the middle of the mattress. The final layer is a thin, quarter-inch polyfoam layer that reinforces the support core. Together, these layers measure 11.75 inches.

Purple Mattress Breakdown

The Purple Mattress is an all-foam mattress that comes in one medium firm (6) design. It has fewer layers than the Brooklyn Bedding Signature, but also features several patented materials that elevate the mattress. The cover is a viscose, polyester, and Lycra spandex blend that’s stretchy and breathable. 

The comfort system features Purple’s best-known material, the Purple Grid. It’s a hyper-elastic polymer that’s poured into a grid-shaped mold during manufacturing. The material adapts to your body’s shape to relieve pressure the same way that standard foam does, but allows air to move around the hollow parts of the grid to keep the bed cool.

The transitional layer is made from 3.25 inches of polyfoam that’s firmer and denser along the perimeter to increase edge support. It’s designed to enhance comfort by adapting and conforming to the body’s shape. The last of the bed’s three layers is its 4-inch polyfoam support core. The Purple Mattress is 9.25 inches thick.

Mattress Sizing and Weight

At 11.75 inches, the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid stands quite a bit higher than the 9.25-inch Purple Mattress. Standard fitted sheets should fit both mattresses though, as they’re within the average mattress height range. The Purple Mattress outweighs the Signature by about 10 pounds, but they are each fairly heavy and require at least two people to move. 

Both beds come in all the standard sizes: twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California king, and split king. The Brooklyn Bedding Signature also comes in a number of other hard-to-find sizes including RV-specific options, short full, short queen, short king, and split California king. These mattress-in-a-box models arrive on your doorstep compressed and sealed in plastic.

Performance Ratings

We found that while the Signature Hybrid and Purple Mattress have different pros and cons from one another, their performances were very much in line with what you’d expect from their constructions. As the name implies, the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid is a hybrid mattress, while the Purple Mattress is all foam. 

The Signature’s pocketed coil core gives it bounce and responsiveness that the Purple doesn’t have. On the other side of the same coin, the Purple is better at preventing motion transfer because it doesn’t bounce as much. It’s tough to find a mattress that succeeds at both factors, so consider which is more important to you. 

These beds received similar scores during our temperature control tests, with the Signature slightly outperforming the Purple. However, the Purple regulates temperature better than most other foam mattresses and it’s a good option if you’re a hot sleeper who likes foam more than springs. Both beds are worthy of their companies’ claims that they’re cooling mattresses.

The Purple is also a better option for those seeking deep pressure relief. The Signature has a reinforced perimeter and it’s got solid edge support as a result. If you have mobility limitations or you sleep at the edge of the mattress the Signature is likely a better fit than the Purple.

The Purple got excellent reviews from side and back sleepers on our team weighing between 130 and 230 pounds. People in these groups also like the Signature, preferring the medium soft (4) and medium firm (6) options over the firm mattress (8). During our sleep testing trials, neither mattress was a great choice for people over 230 pounds, who would have preferred more structure.

The Purple Mattress and Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid are comparable to one another price-wise. You’ll pay a few hundred dollars more for the Purple, but both mattresses frequently go on sale. The Signature has an excellent value for a hybrid. It’s priced at the lower end of the $1,000 to $3,000 range that hybrids typically fall into. 

The Purple Mattress is an all-foam model with an above-average price-point for its construction type. Most foam beds are between $700 and $1,200, but the Purple is at the higher end of this range. Though it costs more than some other foam beds, it has unique and innovative design elements that may make the added cost worth it for some shoppers.
