Full Mattress Review

Brooklyn Bedding and Casper are brands you may be familiar with if you’ve been researching mattress-in-a-box options. Brooklyn Bedding first started manufacturing mattresses in 1995, then began selling them directly to consumers online in 2008. Casper was founded in 2014 and quickly became an online mattress leader.

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid and the Casper One differ in many ways. The Signature Hybrid is a hybrid mattress available in multiple firmness levels, while the Casper One is the brand’s flagship all-foam mattress model with one firmness option. We explore how the two beds compared during our in-house testing, as well as how their policies and online reviews stack up.

Our Testing Team’s Take

We use our rigorous product testing methodology to calculate performance scores and help you identify the best mattress for you. So far, we’ve tested over 4,000 sleep products and more than 2,000 mattresses in our Seattle-based Test Lab using a variety of high-tech tools.

Additionally, we send each mattress home with testing team members so they can sleep on them in their own bedrooms and share their subjective takes about how much comfort and support each mattress provides. Our team includes people with a variety of sleep position preferences and body weights, making their perspectives relevant to different types of sleepers.

Our Verdict

Although the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid and the Casper One sell for around the same price, choosing between them will be easy for most people because of their differences.

Opt for the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid if you prefer a bouncier feel and for the Casper One if you want your bed to provide more “hug.” The Casper One wins with its ability to absorb motion, which can help keep couples from disturbing one another with position changes and other nighttime movements. The Signature Hybrid has a sturdier perimeter that allows for a fuller use of the bed’s surface. Both beds do well at controlling temperature, though the Signature Hybrid sleeps somewhat cooler.

“I like the Brooklyn Bedding Signature for its straightforward design. The foam layers provide comfy cushioning but won’t hug you too much, and the coils give you solid support and a nice bounce without creating too much motion transfer. Hybrids of this quality at such an approachable price are hard to come by, especially when you can choose from different firmness levels.”

Side sleepers tend to enjoy both beds, but those opting for the Signature Hybrid should look at scores by people with similar body weights before deciding which firmness level to choose. Back sleepers under 230 pounds can also find comfort on both beds, but those over 230 should opt for a firmer Signature Hybrid option. Stomach sleepers tend to prefer the Signature Hybrid, but this group should also look closely at performance ratings by body weight, as some might not feel very particularly comfortable on either model.

“One of the things that stood out the most to me was how well the Casper One absorbed motion. I liked that I wasn’t bothered by movement on the other side of the bed. I also felt that the mattress had a good mix of pressure relief and pushback.”

Construction and Materials

The biggest difference between the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid and the Casper One is support core construction. As a hybrid model, the Signature Hybrid’s base layer consists of steel pocketed coils. As an all-foam mattress, the Casper One’s support system is made of high-density polyfoam.

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Breakdown

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid is a hybrid mattress with a 12.25-inch profile that is available in three firmness options. These correspond to medium soft (4), medium firm (6), and firm (8) on our firmness scale. Each option has a slightly different construction, but all of them share the basic design of polyfoam comfort and transitional layers above a pocketed coil support core.

The Signature Hybrid’s cover is made of quilted cotton. Shoppers have the option of upgrading to a cooling pillow top cover, for a fee. In the medium soft and medium firm models, the cover has been quilted with one inch of polyfoam, which provides cushioning. In the firm model, the cover has been quilted with a half-inch of additional cotton.

Beneath the cover sits a polyfoam layer, which is thicker in the medium soft and medium firm models. This layer gives some “hug” to the body and helps relieve pressure. Next is a polyfoam transitional layer, which is thicker in the firm model. This layer also adds to the bed’s cushioning, but it’s a bit denser and keeps sleepers from sinking down to the support core.

The support core consists of an 8-inch layer of individually wrapped steel pocketed coils sitting above a thin layer of high-density base foam. Together, these layers add stability to the bed, give it a springy feel, and promote airflow.

Casper One Breakdown

Unlike the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid, the Casper One is an all-foam mattress. It measures 11 inches thick and rates medium firm (6) on our 10-point scale. The mattress contains three individual layers encased in a cover made from a blend of polyester, polyethylene, and Lycra.

The top layer in the Casper One is made of adaptive polyfoam. This material contours deeply to the body while relieving pressure. This foam has an open-cell composition, allowing heat to disperse through small pockets of air instead of building up. Beneath the comfort layer is a memory foam transitional layer. This layer also cushions sleepers while keeping them from hitting the support core.

The Casper One’s support core is made of high-density polyfoam. This layer stabilizes the mattress.

Mattress Sizing and Weight

Both the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid and the Casper One come in twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California king, and split king sizes. Brooklyn Bedding also offers short full, short queen, short king, Olympic queen, split California king, and RV king sizes.

These mattresses share comparable profiles, and both are compatible with standard fitted sheets. The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid weighs significantly more than the Casper One, because of its steel pocketed coils. However, most people will want to enlist help when lifting either model to avoid injury.

Performance Ratings

Because they are different types of mattresses, the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid and the Casper One have their own unique perks and drawbacks. The Casper One is contours more closely, so it does a better job of relieving pressure and isolating motion. In contrast, the Signature Hybrid excels at controlling temperature and maintaining strong edges.

The Casper One performs well with a smaller subset of sleeper types because it’s only available in one firmness level. Most side sleepers, back sleepers weighing up to 230 pounds, and stomach sleepers under 130 pounds find the Casper One comfortable and adequately supportive.

Side and back sleepers of all body weights can find comfort on the Signature Hybrid, though the firmness level they prefer may vary according to their body weight. Stomach sleepers weighing between 130 and 230 pounds feel supported by the Signature Hybrid’s medium firm model, while heavier stomach sleepers appreciate the added support of the firm model.

Mattress Pricing

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid and the Casper One sell for nearly identical prices. However, the Signature Hybrid has an optional cooling pillow top feature that adds a few hundred dollars to the sticker price.

Both companies offer similar policies, but there are some differences. Brooklyn Bedding’s warranty period is significantly longer than Casper’s. However, Casper offers White Glove Delivery for a fee. This service is not available through Brooklyn Bedding.
