Avocado and Saatva are mattress brands known for using natural and organic materials in their products. Both companies are committed to keeping their mattresses free from potentially harmful substances and manufacturing them in eco-friendly ways.

The Avocado Green is a latex-hybrid mattress, and the Saatva Zenhaven is an all-latex model. Because they share similar materials, these beds have comparable feels and ratings. To help make choosing between them easier, we’ll share what we learned when testing them in our Seattle Test Lab, as well as their policies and customer reviews.

Our Testing Team’s Take

In our Seattle-based Test Lab, our testing team has examined nearly 2,000 mattresses over less than a decade. Through this hands-on testing, we’ve developed a unique product research methodology that forms the backbone of our mattress rating system.

Using cutting edge technology, we pressure map each bed to identify where pressure points may form. We use similarly advanced tools to measure motion transfer across each mattress’ surface and heat retention.

We also have testing team members take mattresses home for weeks at a time, allowing them to mimic real-world use. Because our team members represent a variety of body weights and sleep position preferences, their perspectives can help you identify which might be the best mattress for you.

Our Verdict

Because they contain latex, the Avocado Green and Saatva Zenhaven mattresses feel bouncy and don’t conform very closely. They both excel at keeping sleepers cool and facilitating movement on the surface of the bed, and they don’t produce much off-gassing odor when newly unboxed. Neither bed isolates motion as well as the average all-foam mattress, however, which could be an issue for light sleepers who share their bed with a partner.

The Zenhaven bed is a flippable mattress with a different firmness level on each side, while the Avocado Green comes in three firmness options. Thanks to the multiple firmness options available, sleepers of virtually all body weights and sleep position preferences can find comfort on either bed.

“I found each side of the Zenhaven to be good enough but not great. The Luxury Plush side caused my hips and shoulders to sink in a bit more than I’d like, but the Gentle Firm side wasn’t quite gentle enough. That said, I loved that the mattress stayed cool throughout the night.”

Both beds are made using eco-friendly materials. Shoppers concerned about the environment or the potential impact of certain chemicals will be happy to find that both beds incorporate organic cotton, wool, and latex. They’ve both also received certifications demonstrating that they’re free from potentially harmful substances.

“I love the Avocado. I’m a sucker for organic marketing, but I also think this mattress can back up its claims. Not only is it exceptionally comfortable, it provides great support and is great at not trapping heat. I find latex to be a bit too bouncy for me on an everyday basis, but for someone who moves a lot during the night, it’s a great choice.”

Construction and Materials

Although both mattresses contain organic cotton, wool, and latex, they’re fundamentally different types of beds due to their support cores. The Avocado Green contains a pocketed coil support core, while the Zenhaven’s support layer is made of Dunlop latex.

Avocado Green Breakdown

The Avocado Green mattress is available in three firmness levels: medium (5), medium firm (6), and firm (7) on our 10-point firmness scale. The firm option has an 11-inch profile, while the medium firm is 13 inches and the medium 15.5 inches.

All Avocado Green models share the same cover and support core layers, but have differing comfort and transitional layers. The cover is made of organic cotton, and it sits above an organic wool layer that protects against fire and allows for cooling airflow. On the medium (5) model, the next layer is 3 inches of Talalay latex, which is very adaptive and provides gentle cushioning.

On the medium firm (6) and firm (7) models, the 2-inch layer beneath the wool barrier consists of Dunlop latex, which is a little denser than Talalay. A second layer of Dunlop latex sits beneath the comfort layer to provide additional comfort and prevent sleepers from sinking into the support core.

The support cores of all Avocado Green models contain 8-inch pocketed coils above 1 inch of Dunlop latex. These layers stabilize the beds, and the pocketed coils promote airflow to help the mattress stay cool. The latex layers in Avocado Green mattresses are GOLS-certified, while the cotton and wool layers are GOTS-certified. These certifications indicate the materials have been sustainably sourced and are free of harmful substances.

Zenhaven Mattress Breakdown

The Saatva Zenhaven is a flippable bed: One side is medium soft (4), while the other is firm (7). The Zenhaven’s profile measures 10 inches, and this provides space for six layers. The cover layer is made from organic cotton with a botanical-based Guardin treatment to stave off bacteria and mildew.

On both sides of the bed, a layer of organic wool sits beneath the cover. This layer cushions sleepers while acting as a fire barrier and promoting cooling. A Dunlop latex comfort layer rests beneath the wool. These latex layers are aerated with small holes to promote airflow. These layers are also zoned to provide extra support around the midsection.

At the center of the mattress sits the support core, which is also made of Dunlop latex. This layer is also both zoned and aerated. It’s a bit denser than the other Dunlop layers to stabilize the bed. As with the Avocado Green, the Dunlop layers in this bed are GOLS-certified, and the cotton and wool layers are GOTS-certified.

Mattress Sizing and Weight

The firm (7) Avocado Green mattress is comparable to the Zenhaven in terms of height and weight. Both models can easily fit standard sheets, as can the medium firm (6) Avocado Green, which has the second thickest profile. However, the thickest Avocado Green model, which is the medium (5) model, measures 15.5 inches and requires a deep-pocket fitted sheet.

Performance Ratings

Both beds excel at keeping sleepers cool throughout the night, a quality that’s common among latex mattresses. The springiness of latex facilitates movement, making it easier for sleepers to roll over during the night or get out of bed. One drawback of latex is that this same springiness can transfer motion. Some couples who share a bed may find themselves feeling the movements of their partner during the night.

Since the Zenhaven is flippable and the Avocado Green is available in three options, there are multiple firmness levels to choose from. Different feels suit different sleepers, but almost everyone can find something that works for them in both beds. The medium soft (4) side of the Zenhaven works well for side sleepers weighing less than 230 pounds, while the firm (7) side works best for all other sleepers.

With the Avocado Green mattress, the medium (5) option best suits sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds, regardless of their sleep position preference. The medium firm (6) option is best for side and back sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds. The firm (7) model rates highest for people of all sleep position preferences weighing over 230 pounds, as well as stomach sleepers weighing between 130 and 230 pounds.

Mattress Pricing

Natural latex must be cultivated from trees and then processed, which requires a fair amount of time and labor. As a result, latex generally costs more than other mattress materials, and the prices of these beds reflect that. Because the Avocado Green contains less latex due to its pocketed coil layer, it costs less than the Zenhaven in all but the highest-profile model.

Both beds come with similar sleep trials and warranties. Saatva also offers free White Glove Delivery on the Zenhaven, but that service costs extra for the Avocado Green.

What Customers Are Saying

The Avocado Green and the Saatva Zenhaven have both received overwhelmingly glowing reviews and high ratings from customers online. For both beds, people generally report enjoying their bouncy feel and ability to sleep cool. Many reviewers refer to these as “luxury” beds and say they’re well worth the money.

Critical reviews of the Zenhaven come from customers who complain that their bed developed sunken-in spots over time, though those who mention this also say that they were able to have the bed repaired or replaced under the warranty. Those who are unhappy with the Avocado Green generally either dislike that delivery is charged separately or wish they had bought a softer model.
