Avocado vs. Zenhaven Mattress Comparison
Avocado and Zenhaven have established themselves as direct-to-consumer mattress brands that offer high-end, environmentally friendly options.
Avocado was launched in 2016 and specializes in producing bedding made from organic and sustainably sourced materials. The flagship Avocado Green Mattress is a hybrid model that pairs Dunlop latex with a zoned coil system. The Avocado Vegan Mattress is built similarly, but it is made without wool. Avocado also offers a Latex Mattress, which is constructed with multiple zoned layers of Dunlop latex. The brand’s newest model, the Avocado Luxury Plush Mattress, features 21 individual layers. These include organic latex and coils, along with natural materials such as silk, mohair, and cotton.
Zenhaven was also created in 2016, though its parent company Saatva has been around since 2010. Saatva is a well-known American brand that has also produced other mattresses such as the Loom & Leaf and the Solaire. Similar to Saatva’s other brands and models, the Zenhaven is made with high-quality and durable materials. However, the Zenhaven stands out for its eco-friendly construction. This flippable mattress is constructed using zoned Dunlop latex for long-lasting and targeted support.
Both Avocado and Zenhaven are luxury brands that incorporate high-quality materials and natural latex to provide shoppers with a durable and supportive mattress. Because the companies offer similar benefits, it can be challenging to choose between the two. To help you decide which brand is best for you, we will examine important factors such as construction, performance, pricing, and company policies.

Sizing Options
The size of a mattress can impact how easy it is to set up, how it fits in your bedroom and with your existing furniture, and whether it can easily be repositioned.
Most companies offer beds in six standard sizes, which are twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, and California king. While larger beds may seem better at first, they can make a small space feel cramped. Larger beds also tend to cost more than smaller ones, which may be a deal-breaker when shopping on a budget.
Mattress height may also be a consideration for some shoppers. High-profile mattresses have more room for substantial support or comfort layers. If your bed frame isn’t very high, then a taller mattress may raise the bed off the ground and make it easier to get in and out. However, it may be challenging to find fitted sheets for particularly tall mattresses.
Heavy mattresses can be difficult to maneuver, which is something to consider if you’ll need to set up the mattress by yourself. It may also be difficult to find a foundation that is suited to support very heavy beds.

Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King, Split KingAvocado and Zenhaven offer similarly sized beds. Both brands have options in all six standard sizes, though Zenhaven and the Avocado Latex Mattress offer an additional split king size for couples who use an adjustable base.
At 10 inches tall, the Zenhaven falls squarely within the average height for a mattress. Avocado offers some variety in terms of height, with mattresses ranging from 9 inches to 15 inches.
Because they contain latex, the beds from Avocado and Zenhaven are on the heavier side. The Avocado Green is the lightest option at 97 pounds. Weighing up to 226 pounds, the Avocado Luxury Plush is by far the heaviest mattress from either brand.
Both Avocado and Zenhaven offer White Glove delivery to help customers install the mattress, but the added weight may be an important consideration for individuals who expect to frequently reposition their bed.

Construction and Materials Comparison
The construction and materials used in a mattress can acutely impact its feel and performance. Most mattresses are made using several layers, including comfort layers, transitional layers, and a support core. Mattresses can be categorized into different types depending on the materials used in each layer.
Some common mattress types include foam, latex, and hybrid. Foam mattresses can be made using layers of memory foam, polyfoam, or textiles such as cotton and wool batting, with high-density foam in the support core.
Latex mattresses are made using natural or synthetic latex, which are known for durability and temperature control. Natural latex is harvested from rubber trees and processed using one of two methods. The Dunlop method results in a dense and supportive latex, while the Talalay method typically creates a lighter and softer material.
Hybrid mattresses pair the pressure-relieving benefits of foam or latex with a support system of innerspring coils. Steel coils can add to a bed’s responsiveness and durability, and they provide more support for sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds.
Avocado
Avocado makes both hybrid and latex models. All mattresses follow rigorous environmental standards. The latex is certified by the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS), and the cotton and wool are certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). Mattress layers are needle-tufted together to avoid using chemical adhesives. The company’s mattresses meet GREENGUARD Gold and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 requirements, meaning they are made without harmful substances.
Avocado Green
The Avocado Green hybrid mattress combines organic wool and latex with pocketed coils for a durable and supportive surface. This bed is also available in a vegan version, which features the same latex and coil construction but uses cotton batting in place of wool. The mattress is composed of:
- Organic wool
- 2 inches of organic Dunlop latex
- 3-zoned pocketed coils with reinforced sides
- 1 inch of organic Dunlop latex
The mattress measures 11 inches tall. It has an organic cotton cover, and the wool doubles as a natural fire barrier. In the Avocado Vegan Mattress and optional pillow-top, cotton batting takes the place of the wool, and Avocado has inserted a natural hydrated silica fire barrier.
Dunlop latex is known for its breathability, which can help prevent overheating throughout the night. The 8-inch pocketed coil system is zoned to provide additional support in weight-bearing areas such as the torso.
The Avocado Green is firm, rating a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale. Customers who would prefer a softer sleep surface can choose to add a pillow-top for an additional fee. Made with organic wool and Dunlop latex, the pillow-top brings down the firmness rating to medium firm (6) while adding 2 inches to the bed’s profile.
Avocado Latex/Vegan Latex
Made with three layers of latex, the 9-inch Avocado Latex has a dense and springy feel. The mattress rates a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale, or firm, and it contains:
- Organic wool
- 2 inches of soft Dunlop latex
- 3 inches of medium Dunlop latex
- Cotton batting
- 4 inches of firm Dunlop latex
The comfort layer of the Avocado Latex is made using convoluted latex with perforated holes. This design helps draw additional heat away from the body. The comfort layer also features three zones to provide targeted support for the spine. Two more layers of Dunlop latex help protect against sinking or sagging and promote proper spinal alignment. The cover is made from organic cotton, adding to the softness of the bed while enhancing breathability.
For vegan shoppers, the Avocado Vegan Latex mattress replaces wool components with organic cotton and natural hydrated silica.
Avocado Luxury Plush Mattress
The Luxury Plush Mattress is constructed with 21 individual layers built onto a 15-inch profile. Many of the layers are relatively thin and found near the surface. They include natural materials such as alpaca hair, organic wool, organic cotton canvas, and a blend of organic silk and mohair.
The core materials of the Luxury Plush Mattress are as follows:
- 2 inches of GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex
- 2 inches of GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex
- 8 inches of pocketed coils
- 1 inch of GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex
As a latex hybrid, the Luxury Plush Mattress is very responsive. The top layers also provide generous padding, so the mattress shouldn’t feel excessively firm. It is considered medium (5) in terms of feel. The cover is composed of GOTS-certified organic cotton.
For an extra charge, customers can add a pillow-top to their mattress that creates an even plusher surface feel. The pillow-top model measures 18 inches thick. In addition to the components listed above, pillow-top versions include a transitional layer of minicoils and another layer of blended organic wool, silk, and cotton batting.
Zenhaven
The Zenhaven features a flippable design with two different firmness levels to choose from. The Gentle Firm side is firm (7), while the Luxury Plush side is medium soft (4). The mattress is wrapped in a GOTS-certified cotton cover and features a layer of breathable GOTS-certified New Zealand wool on each side.
Saatva has designed the Zenhaven with four layers of latex in total. The mattresses utilizes natural Dunlop latex, which has a lighter, springier feel than Dunlop. Although it’s not organic, the latex is certified by the Rainforest Alliance as well as OEKO-TEX Standard 100.
The firm side is made using firmer latex, while the soft side uses softer latex for a plusher and more conforming feel. Both comfort layers feature five separate zones with enhanced lumbar support, and pincore holes that increase airflow to minimize overheating. In the support core, denser layers of latex provide durable spinal support.
Pricing Information
Budget is one of the most important requirements for many shoppers. While cheaper options may be tempting, low-quality materials may cause irritation or deteriorate quickly. Quality materials tend to be more durable, and may provide more years of healthier rest.
Outside of the quality of materials used, there are several other factors that may contribute to a bed’s price tag. For example, brands that focus on sustainable and ethical production or who provide additional services such as White Glove delivery may raise their prices accordingly. Special engineering such as proprietary materials or zoned layers can also increase the price of a mattress.

Natural latex is expensive to produce, and though it has become more accessible in recent years, it is still more costly than materials such as memory foam. The higher price-points of the Avocado and Zenhaven mattresses reflect the elevated cost of the latex and other natural and organic materials.
Of the Avocado mattresses, the hybrid Avocado Green has the lowest price. The higher cost of the all-latex model is logical considering a latex support core costs more to manufacture than a steel coil system. The Avocado Luxury Plush is the most expensive model, due to its extra height and additional materials such as silk and alpaca.
The Zenhaven has a steeper price-point than the standard Avocado mattresses. This higher price may be attributed to the flippable design. The price of the Zenhaven also includes additional services such as White Glove delivery, which is worth approximately $100 to $150.
Mattress Performance Ratings
Most people agree that a mattress should be comfortable and supportive, but beyond these basic requirements, each mattress may offer additional features. Mattress choice is highly subjective, and there is no one bed that is perfect for every sleeper. When comparing the different options on the market, it helps to know which characteristics you value most.
Durability
A mattress should be able to withstand considerable use without sinking, sagging, or cracking. Most mattresses last between 7 and 10 years, though beds made using quality materials may last longer before needing to be replaced. Mattresses that incorporate latex or coils are typically more durable than all-foam products.
Motion Isolation
Motion isolation can be useful for couples who are sensitive to each other’s movements throughout the night. Materials such as memory foam excel at absorbing motion and preventing vibrations from traveling across the surface of the bed. Mattresses that are bouncy and responsive may not isolate motion as well.
Sex
As a general rule of thumb, responsive beds that enhance motion typically perform well for sex. Some contour can also be useful to provide traction, though a bed that conforms too closely can make it difficult to move around freely. Couples may also want to consider how noisy the mattress is, whether it stays cool or overheats, and how strong the edges are.
Temperature Neutrality
Temperature neutrality is important for hot sleepers and those who live in warm climates. Latex and hybrid mattresses tend to perform well in this category, especially aerated latex with perforations that allow for airflow. By contrast, memory foam is known for trapping heat and may become uncomfortably warm for some sleepers.
Pressure Relief
Most sleepers tend to place considerable pressure on sharper points of their bodies, such as the hips and shoulders. This can become painful over time, particularly on harder surfaces. To alleviate pressure build-up, many mattresses incorporate conforming materials, such as foam or latex, that cradle these areas and help distribute body weight. The best mattress for people struggling with neck and back pain is typically a medium-firm model that distributes weight evenly.
Off-gassing
Many new mattresses come with a distinct odor, particularly immediately after unboxing. The scent is typically caused by volatile organic compounds (VOCs). While VOCs usually disperse within a few days and are not considered harmful, they may bother individuals who are sensitive to smell. Foam mattresses come with a slightly stronger off-gassing scent, while mattresses made with natural materials tend to have minimal off-gassing.
Ease of Movement
Ease of movement refers to how easy it is to move around on the surface of the bed. Responsive beds that incorporate latex or springs typically do well in this category. Meanwhile, materials such as memory foam contour more closely and absorb motion, which can make it more challenging to move freely. Individuals with mobility issues or those who change positions frequently throughout the night may value a responsive surface.
Edge Support
Without reinforcement along the edges, a mattress may cause feelings of roll-off when sitting or sleeping near the edge of the bed. Innerspring coils or high-density polyfoam borders allow sleepers to make full use of the mattress. Reliable edge support may also make it easier to get in and out of bed.

Shipping
Online mattress companies typically ship their items in one of two ways. The most common method is called mattress-in-a-box shipping, where the mattress is shipped compressed and rolled into a box. Customers are responsible for unpacking and installing their new mattress, which simply involves opening the box and removing the plastic.
Another common method is White Glove delivery, where a team delivers and installs the mattress for you. Many companies charge an additional fee for White Glove delivery, and customers may also have the option to pay for old mattress removal.
Avocado Shipping Policies
Avocado offers free shipping to addresses in all 50 U.S. states. Most mattresses are shipped via FedEx and arrive within 4 to 6 business days after ordering. The mattresses are shipped as in a box.
Avocado also offers White Glove delivery for an additional $249 fee. With this option, customers schedule a time for a team to deliver and install the mattress. The team can also remove an old mattress.
Zenhaven Shipping Policies
As the Zenhaven is not compressed for shipping, Saatva provides free White Glove delivery for the Zenhaven mattress, as well as complimentary old mattress removal for those who select this option at checkout. Customers can schedule a 4-hour block of time during which the new bed will be installed. Last-minute cancellations on the customer’s part will incur a $99 transportation fee.
Customers in Hawaii and Alaska should contact the company directly for shipping options.
Sleep Trial and Returns
Since it takes some time to get used to a new mattress, many online mattress companies offer a sleep trial. If you decide the bed isn’t for you after sleeping on it for a few months, then you can return it for a refund.
Some sleep trials include a mandatory break-in period to allow the body to fully adjust to the new sleep surface before initiating a return. Additionally, some companies charge a transportation or restocking fee for returned items.
Avocado Sleep Trial and Return Policy
Avocado offers a generous 365-night sleep trial for its mattresses, but requires that buyers keep their mattress for a minimum of 30 days to allow their body enough time to adjust to the new sleep surface. If you still choose to return or exchange your product after the break-in period, Avocado will work with you to coordinate the return and cover any return shipping costs. Returns are limited to one per household, and the mattress must be in good condition. White Glove delivery and other additional fees are not refundable.
Zenhaven Sleep Trial and Return Policy
The Zenhaven comes with a 365-night sleep trial. There is no mandatory break-in period, so buyers may return the bed at any point during this time. Saatva charges a $99 transportation fee to return the bed, and the company coordinates return pickup and ensures the mattress will find a good home.
Warranty
Almost all mattress companies offer customers protection against manufacturing and workmanship defects with a warranty of at least 10 years. Before purchasing a mattress, check how long the warranty is, what defects it covers, and whether there are any special conditions, such as using the mattress with a specific type of foundation. In the case of a prorated warranty, you may have to pay part of the mattress replacement or repair fee. Some companies also ask customers to cover return shipping fees.
Avocado Mattress Warranty
Each Avocado mattress is backed by a 25-year prorated warranty for the original buyer. To qualify for the warranty, the mattress must be used with a suitable foundation and it must have been opened within 30 days of the delivery date.
The warranty covers defects including cracking or splitting in the latex, defects in the cover, and visible indentations greater than 1.5 inches, or greater than 2 inches for the Luxury Plush Mattress. Abusing the mattress or not rotating the mattress regularly may void the warranty.
For the first 10 years of the warranty, Avocado will repair or replace the mattress free of charge. After the initial 10 years, the owner will be responsible for any transportation fees, as well as for a prorated percentage of the replacement mattress cost.
Zenhaven Mattress Warranty
Saatva backs the Zenhaven mattress with a lifetime warranty. To qualify for repairs or replacements, the bed must be used with a suitable foundation. The mattress must also show no signs of abuse or misuse.
This warranty covers against manufacturing defects and body impressions at least 1 inch deep. During the first 2 years of the warranty, Saatva will cover the entire cost of the replacement mattress . After 2 years, customers will need to pay a $149 transportation fee.
Saatva also offers a Fairness Replacement Option, which permits customers to keep their defective mattress and buy a new one at a reduced rate. Customers only qualify for this option once.
