After years of research and testing thousands of sleep products, we are proud to introduce the Sleep Is the Foundation Loft Pillow and the Sleep Is the Foundation Gel Memory Foam Pillow. We used our knowledge and expertise to create these two models, both with many features we felt were missing from competitors in the market today. We realize that one pillow can not fit every person’s sleep needs, so we released two models for different types of sleepers.

The Sleep Is the Foundation Loft Pillow is an adjustable model filled with shredded, gel-infused memory foam. You can customize the firmness level of the pillow between soft and medium feels, and the profile is adjustable up to 8 inches by adding or removing the fill. Meanwhile, the Gel Memory Foam Pillow is a firmer design that features a solid gel-infused memory foam core.

Today, we’ll be focusing on the Loft Pillow. Read on to learn more about the pillow’s construction, materials, and how it held up in our test lab.

Pillow Performance Ratings

We know what you’re thinking: How can you review your own pillow? How can we trust what you have to say about something you made? The short answer is that providing honest assessments of sleep products is the heart of what we do. We evaluate products objectively to help everyday people better understand their needs and empower individuals to find the right products for them. If we’re putting something out there, we evaluate it with the same rigorous testing protocols we use for any other product.

The long answer is that we have multiple guardrails in place during testing so our team can evaluate our products objectively. Here’s how we make sure our team gave our products their honest, unbiased assessments:

  • We remove any logos, labels, or other branding from the pillow before sending it to our test lab, and we keep the pillow anonymous throughout the testing session. In this case, we used a prototype version of our pillow that did not include the logo quilted into the cover.
  • We test our pillow as part of a group of other pillows that were also anonymized. Anonymous batch testing is useful in terms of removing any unconscious brand biases our team members might have.
  • Our testing team is only made aware of the identities of the products after the session is complete and all scores are submitted.
  • Our testing team is not allowed to adjust their ratings for the products after they submit their final assessments. All ratings are final once submitted.

We’ll focus on the Sleep Is the Foundation Loft Pillow’s performance in this review to help you decide if this pillow fits your needs. No pillow is compatible with every sleeper, so consider your priorities and search for pillows that perform well in those areas.

The Loft Pillow excelled in a few areas during pillow testing – namely firmness options, temperature control, and moldability. An adjustable design made it appealing to many of our testers, who could customize the loft and firmness level to fit their needs. A breathable cover, mesh netting, and considerable airflow through the shredded fill help the pillow maintain a comfortable temperature.

The shredded memory foam fill gives the Loft Pillow a malleable feel for sleepers who prefer to snuggle with their pillow at night or move the fill around for extra support in targeted areas. Our testers did find, however, that the pillow was not as effective at retaining its shape compared to a solid memory foam model. Unless you keep it stuffed to the brim, you’ll need to fluff the pillow from time to time to return it to its original shape.

Durability

/ 5

Pillows made from memory foam tend not to last as long as those made with down or latex, but the Loft Pillow has above-average durability. This is largely due to the pillow’s high-quality construction, as well as its removable and machine-washable cover.

Firmness Options

4 / 5

Thanks to the Loft Pillow’s adjustable design, you can add or remove the shredded gel memory foam fill to achieve your ideal firmness level. Removing fill results in a lower profile and softer feel that some stomach sleepers may enjoy. Meanwhile, adding fill increases the loft and creates a firmer feel that side sleepers should find comfortable.

Shape Retention

Fair / 5

The pillow’s plush and malleable shredded foam fill does not keep its shape as well as other models. If you mold the pillow to a certain shape, you may have to fluff it to have it return to its original structure. If you’re looking for a pillow that retains its shape better, we recommend our Gel Memory Foam model or a latex pillow.

Moldability

Excellent / 5

A shredded memory foam core makes the pillow highly moldable. You can shift the fill around to achieve the best shape for your needs. This is a great option for people who prefer to snuggle with their pillow at night or fold it into a different shape for more support.

Conforming

Good / 5

The Loft Pillow delivers decent conforming for the head and neck. The shredded memory foam feels quite adaptive, but it doesn’t conform as closely as other models. You should feel like your head is floating on the pillow rather than sinking into it. If you prefer a closer contouring pillow, you may prefer a solid memory foam model.

Temperature Control

/ 5

The Loft Pillow was a hit with our hot sleepers, who often overheat on pillows made with memory foam. The shredded design and mesh netting on the sides encourage internal airflow. Meanwhile, the breathable polyester and bamboo-derived viscose blend cover keeps the surface cool to the touch. The foam is also infused with cooling gel meant to absorb and dissipate excess heat.

Odor Potential

Very Good / 5

Compared to other memory foam pillows, the Loft Pillow emits very little off-gassing odor upon unboxing. Any residual odors should dissipate quickly in a well-ventilated room. Off-gassing odors are more common in bedding and mattresses made with synthetic materials like memory foam. These odors are due to the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are thought to be harmless but can be irritating to some sleepers.

Cleaning and Care

Caring for the Loft Pillow is easy. The outer cover is removable and machine-washable. Wash the cover in cold water on a gentle cycle, and tumble dry on the lowest heat setting. You can machine-wash the inner pillow as well, but make sure you remove all of the fill first.

Sleeping Style and Body Weight

As the Loft Pillow is adjustable, we found that it works well for a wide variety of sleepers, from side sleepers to stomach sleepers. Simply add or remove fill from the pillow to reach the combination of pillow loft and feel that’s right for you.

One major drawback our team found is that although the fill is adjustable, its overall feel is on the soft-to-medium side. Back sleepers and sleepers over 230 pounds typically need a bit more pushback from their pillow for proper support, so they may find this softer feel lacking. As a result, they may sink further into the pillow than is comfortable.

While overstuffing the pillow a bit will help with this drawback, it won’t be enough for everyone to feel comfortable. For sleepers who need a bit more firmness from their pillow, we recommend trying our Gel Memory Foam Pillow instead or opting for another model made from a firmer material.

Here’s how the pillow held up for different types of sleepers in our test lab.

Side Sleepers

Side sleepers on our testing team thoroughly enjoyed the Loft Pillow, regardless of their body type. People who use this position typically prefer higher-loft pillows to support the head and keep their spines in proper alignment. Pillows with lower profiles tend to cause a side sleeper’s head to drop too low and strain the neck.

The Loft Pillow has an 8-inch profile when filled, which is very thick compared to many other pillows available. This high profile proved supportive for most of our side sleepers, including those who weigh more than 230 pounds and tend to sink deeper into their pillows.

Back Sleepers

Our team’s back-sleeping testers also awarded the pillow higher ratings, particularly those weighing up to 230 pounds. Back sleepers often enjoy pillows with a mid-range profile that don’t crank the head up too high while still cushioning the neck.

We recommend back sleepers remove some of the fill to achieve a comfortable profile, which falls between 3 and 5 inches for most. Back sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds may want to add more fill than other body types so their heads don’t sink too deeply into the softer-feeling pillow. The adaptive foam should contour to the neck fairly closely to alleviate pressure.

Stomach Sleepers

Compared to the other sleep positions, our stomach-sleeping testers rated the Loft Pillow lowest. Stomach sleepers prefer pillows with a low profile to prevent their necks from angling backward and causing strain. People who use this position and weigh less than 130 pounds tend to need the lowest profiles since their heads don’t sink as deeply into their pillows.

Stomach sleepers on our team weighing up to 230 pounds found the pillow very comfortable after removing some of the fill. But those who weigh more than 230 pounds may prefer a model with a lower profile and firmer feel for more support.
