Though everyone needs a good night’s rest, it can be especially important for those with sleep apnea. People who have obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) or central sleep apnea (CSA) typically don’t get good quality, uninterrupted sleep, which can affect the rest of their lives and cause short and long-term health problems.

While a mattress can’t solve every issue associated with sleep apnea, the right one can help sleepers stay comfortably supported. Studies show that certain bed angles may even be able to minimize symptoms. We’ll cover what kind of mattress you should consider if you have sleep apnea, and what you should avoid, as well as share our top picks for the best mattresses for sleep apnea.

Our Verdict

Who It’s Best For

The WinkBed is an excellent option for sleepers with sleep apnea seeking a combination of postural support and pressure relief. With four firmness options, it’s suitable for most body types and sleep positions. Hot sleepers may also appreciate the WinkBed’s notable breathability.

Additionally, this model is compatible with adjustable frames for those who benefit from sleeping with their upper body lifted.

Feel

The WinkBed balances support and conforming to relieve pressure while limiting sinkage. Its coil core makes the bed responsive and enhances the edge support. Meanwhile, the breathable design helps keep the surface at a neutral temperature.

What It’s Made Of

The construction of the WinkBed varies slightly between firmness levels. The medium soft (4) version’s comfort system consists of three layers of polyfoam. Meanwhile, the medium firm (6) and firm (7) versions use two layers of polyfoam, and the Plus (8) uses a layer of polyfoam and a layer of latex. Each of the firmness options is encased in a Tencel cover and contains a pocketed coil core with reinforced edges.

What We Don’t Like

Some sleepers who awaken easily may notice vibrations when their partner moves due to the bounce coil core. Additionally, side sleeping is often recommended for individuals with sleep apnea. While most WinkBed firmness options are suitable for side sleepers of all weights, the Plus may be too firm for some under 230 pounds.

Handcrafted in the U.S., the WinkBed line has four models with distinct firmness levels and feels. The result is a line of mattresses that works exceptionally well for sleepers from nearly every weight group and sleeping position. The WinkBed is a great pick for people with sleep apnea because it provides comfortable spinal support no matter their sleeping position or weight.

How It Performs

Our team tested all four WinkBed models and found that they share many of the same strengths. Regardless of which firmness level you opt for, you’ll receive top-notch edge support, thanks to the mattress’ reinforced perimeter. Every WinkBed model also regulated temperature very well during our performance trials, making this an excellent choice for hot sleepers. It’s also highly durable, well made, and likely to last longer than innerspring models made with lesser-quality materials

Though our testers’ preferences varied depending on their body weight and favorite sleeping position, each group gave one of the models top marks during rankings. On the whole, side sleepers on our team preferred the Softer and Luxury Firm WinkBed models, while back and stomach sleepers’ liked the Luxury Firm, Firmer, and Plus options best.

Construction Breakdown

The WinkBed begins with a pocketed coil support core, which has a reinforced perimeter to enhance edge support. Support zones in this layer increase and decrease pushback strategically to keep your spine at a healthy angle. A polyfoam layer sits above the support core to create stable support and minimize motion transfer. In the WinkBed Plus, the firmest model, a layer of latex replaces this polyform to keep sleepers above 230 pounds properly supported. The bed is topped off with a Euro-Top that has quilted gel-infused polyfoam and a Tencel cover.

WinkBed offers shoppers free delivery within the contiguous U.S., a 120-night sleep trial, and a limited lifetime warranty.

Our Verdict

Who It’s Best For

The all-foam Nectar Classic is an affordable model that’s an excellent choice for people who feel pressure point discomfort. This medium firm (6) mattress scored well among back and side sleepers on our team, especially those weighing under 230 pounds.

Feel

The Nectar Classic gently molds to a sleeper’s body without sacrificing support. The close conforming and slow response of memory foam also lead to very minimal motion transfer.

What It’s Made Of

The 12-inch Nectar Classic starts with a comfort system containing 1 inch of memory foam and 3 inches of polyfoam. The core uses 8 inches of high-density polyfoam. A polyester blend cover wraps around the exterior. Its top portion contains fibers designed for cooling and a treatment engineered for antimicrobial properties.

What We Don’t Like

Due to its foam core, the Nectar Classic doesn’t have the bounce of traditional coils, which can impede movement for some sleepers with mobility issues. The surface may also retain some heat. Additionally, stomach sleepers over or under 230 pounds may benefit from more support or more cushioning respectively.

We performed a meta-analysis on 10000 validated customer reviews of the Nectar Mattress. This is what people who bought the mattress had to say:

  • Pain Relief: Many users have reported significant relief from back, neck, and joint pain. The mattress seems particularly beneficial for those with chronic pain, contributing to better overall sleep quality.
  • Free Accessories: Nectar often includes free pillows, mattress protectors, and sheets with the mattress, adding value and convenience for new customers.
  • Suitable for All Weights: The mattress supports a wide range of body weights and sizes without losing comfort or stability, making it versatile for different users.
  • Temperature Regulation: Several reviews indicate that the mattress does a good job of staying cool throughout the night, which is a significant benefit for those who tend to sleep hot.
  • Customer Service: Positive remarks about Nectar’s customer service are common, with many customers feeling supported during the purchasing and setup process.
  • Durability Concerns: While many users find the mattress supportive and comfortable, there are occasional mentions of durability concerns, such as sagging or indentations developing over time, particularly from heavier users.

Full Details

The Nectar Classic is a budget-friendly choice for individuals with sleep apnea, combining solid support and pressure relief in a comfortable all-foam design. Its medium firm (6) feel promotes spinal alignment for many sleepers, while motion isolation helps reduce unnecessary sleep interruptions.

How It Performs

During testing trials, the Nectar Classic Memory Foam Mattress stood out in a few performance categories including motion isolation and pressure relief, because the mattress’ thick foam layers absorb both movement and impact. When you shift on this mattress, your partner is unlikely to wake as a result because the foam traps motion where it happens. The multiple foam layers also cradle your body to alleviate pressure around the hips, lower back, and shoulders.

Our team did note that this mattress may take more effort to move around on, and is a better fit for those who like the sensation of sleeping “in” their bed rather than “on” it.

Construction Breakdown

The Nectar Classic has three layers, all made of CertiPUR-US certified foams. An 8-inch polyfoam support core creates a stable base that provides stability. Above it sits a 3-inch transitional polyfoam layer that excels at limiting motion transfer. Finally, the top of the mattress has one inch of memory foam designed to relieve pressure points by conforming to your body’s shape and cushioning sore areas.

The Nectar Classic comes with a 365-night sleep trial, a limited lifetime warranty, and free shipping in the contiguous U.S.

Our Verdict

Who It’s Best For

Our testers found the Helix Dusk Elite best for side and back sleepers under 230 pounds, particularly those in the 130 to 230 pound range. Its notable pressure relief might appeal to those with sharp aches and pains, while strong motion isolation may help those who awaken easily get more sleep.

Feel

The Helix Dusk Elite Mattress is simultaneously deeply contouring and highly supportive. In our tests, the model also absorbed motion well, produced no detectable sounds, and maintained a relatively neutral temperature.

What It’s Made Of

The 16-inch Helix Dusk Elite starts with a six-layer comfort system consisting of a layer of polyfoam, followed by a microcoil system, then another layer of polyfoam, another microcoil system, and two more layers of polyfoam. Its core uses zoned pocketed coils with reinforced edges, and a layer of high-density polyfoam rests underneath. A fabric cover designed for cooling envelopes the mattress.

What We Don’t Like

Because of its very generous comfort system, sleepers over 230 pounds may not get the support they need to maintain good posture throughout the night despite the Helix Dusk Elite’s medium firm (6) feel. The mattress’ profile is also quite high, which may make it more difficult for some sleepers to set up, move, or get into and out of.

The hybrid Helix Dusk Elite Mattress features top-end materials and a luxe design with nine layers and multiple patented technologies. It’s a medium firm (6) mattress that’s well-rounded and suitable for a range of sleepers. It’s a high-end mattress with attention to detail, which is reflected in its price-point.

How It Performs

This mattress performed best for back and side sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds, and stomach sleepers under 130 pounds. The foam comfort layers and zoned support system create a balanced feel that supports the body while relieving pressure. It also has substantial edge support and is quite successful at isolating motion. Foam layers dampen the mattress’ responsiveness a bit, but it’s a suitable choice for those who prefer motion isolation over substantial bounce.

Construction Breakdown

For its base, the Helix Dusk Elite features a support core comprising 8-inch pocketed coils sandwiched between two layers of polyfoam. The coils are zoned to provide additional lumbar support, and the perimeter is reinforced. The Helix Dusk Elite’s comfort system contains alternating microcoil and polyfoam layers, topped with a quilted pillow-top. Both the microcoil layers and pillow-top are designed to provide cooling, and the foam comfort layers give the bed a conforming feel.

Our Verdict

Who It’s Best For

With three firmness options to choose from, side sleepers of all body types can find a suitable option. Sleepers looking for both pressure relief and ease of movement may enjoy this model’s balance between contouring and responsiveness, and hot sleepers might appreciate its temperature control. The supportive edge may also appeal to those who frequently sit along the perimeter to get in and out of bed or to adjust their CPAP equipment.

Feel

The Nolah Evolution 15 feels plush yet supportive, with notable contouring to reduce pressure points. Its breathable design minimizes heat retention, and its strong motion isolation can help promote more restful sleep.

What It’s Made Of

A three-layer comfort system tops the Nolah Evolution 15. Each layer uses 2 inches of polyfoam, with hole punches in the second layer for targeted support and conforming. A breathable gusset wraps around the outside of the top 4 inches. Another 1-inch layer of transition foam rests under the comfort system, followed by an 8-inch zoned pocketed coil core with reinforced edges supported by a final 1 inch of polyfoam. A quilted cover with fibers designed to dissipate heat encases the mattress.

What We Don’t Like

Some sleepers sensitive to smells may dislike the initial off-gassing odor. At 15 inches thick, sleepers accustomed to lower-profile models may also find it harder to get into and out of the bed. Additionally, the $99 return fee may be a drawback for sleepers wanting to test different models to find the best option for their sleep apnea.

We performed a meta-analysis on 897 validated customer reviews of the Nolah Evolution 15. This is what people who bought the mattress had to say:

  • Motion Isolation: Couples frequently mention that the mattress is good at isolating motion, making it less likely for one partner to disturb the other during the night.
  • Edge Support: The edge support of the mattress is frequently highlighted, with many finding it adequate for sitting or sleeping near the edge without feeling like they will roll off.
  • Softness: Many reviewers discuss the softness of the mattress. Some find it too soft, causing discomfort, especially for heavier individuals, while others appreciate the plushness.
  • Comfort and Support: Several users mention that the mattress provides excellent comfort and support, helping alleviate or prevent back and joint pain.
  • Heat Retention: A few reviewers note that the mattress retains heat, making it uncomfortable for some, particularly in warmer climates or for those who sleep hot.
  • Durability and Quality: Users often comment on the high quality and durability of the mattress, noting that it maintains its shape and comfort over time.

Full Details

This hybrid mattress is available in three firmness levels: medium (5), medium firm (6), and firm (8), which Nolah calls Plush, Luxury Firm, and Firm. Our testing team tried all three models and found that they share many of the same strengths and weaknesses.

How It Performs

Some of the Evolution 15’s top-scoring performance categories were temperature control, pressure relief, motion isolation, and ease of movement, which all speak to this model’s balanced feel. Though each firmness option performed differently for the range of weights and sleeping postures of our testers, they all offered even spinal support and gentle contouring.

Side sleepers liked the Plush and Luxury Firm options best because their softer formulations cushion high-impact zones like the hips and shoulders. Back sleepers found the Luxury Firm and Firm options equally comfortable, depending on the sleeper’s weight. Overall, stomach sleepers score the firm model highest, though the Luxury Firm did provide strong enough support for stomach sleepers under 230 pounds.

Construction Breakdown

The Evolution 15’s hybrid build begins with 8-inch pocketed coils atop a one-inch foam foundation that provides stability. The coils are zoned for targeted support and also reinforced around the bed’s perimeter for firm edges. Above the support core sits one-layer of transition foam, which adds responsiveness to the bed and absorbs motion.

The comfort system consists of three polyfoam layers, each with unique properties. The bottom-most layer is CertiPUR-US certified and provides both support and pressure relief. The center comfort layer is hole-punched in areas of the body that may need to sink into the mattress more deeply, like the shoulders. The uppermost comfort foam layer is quilted into a Euro-topper that sits in a gusset, two design tools aimed at regulating temperature.

Our Verdict

Who It’s Best For

With over 50 settings and multiple split-side options available, the Saatva Solaire is an excellent pick for couples and those with adjustable bed bases. It’s an airbed that also incorporates memory foam and latex to help increase pressure relief and comfort.

Feel

The Saatva Solaire’s comfort system is conforming yet responsive, while its adjustable air chamber core allows sleepers to fine-tune the firmness to meet their needs. This combination also lends to strong temperature control and ease of motion.

What It’s Made Of

This model starts with a 3-inch quilted Euro-top with zoned lumbar support. Next, there’s a 1-inch layer of aerated natural latex divided into five firmness zones. A 2-inch layer of gel-infused memory foam rests beneath, but the order of these first two layers can be switched at home based on personal preferences. A moisture layer underneath protects the core, which consists of vulcanized rubber air chambers with a foam perimeter encasement. The mattress is wrapped in a cover that includes organic cotton on top and polyester along the base, and it comes with a remote to adjust the firmness.

What We Don’t Like

The Saatva Solaire’s higher-than-average price-point may make it cost prohibitive for shoppers on a budget. Additionally, some of our team members noticed a bit of motion transfer when lying on the mattress. This may interrupt sleep for those who awaken easily, especially if they share their bed with a partner who spills over onto their side of the bed.

The Saatva Solaire’s adjustable firmness gives sleepers with sleep apnea ample choices to customize their mattress for their unique needs. With 50 firmness settings and flippable comfort layers, it’s one of the most versatile options on the market. When paired with an adjustable base, those with sleep apnea have even more ways to find a position appropriate for their symptoms.

How It Performs

Because the Solaire’s firmness level can be changed using a remote, the majority of our testing team found a setting that provided them with comfort and support. The Solaire is also worth considering for couples with different firmness needs, since there are separate remotes and adjustable air chambers for each side of the bed.

Our team reported that the Solaire excelled in many performance categories, but was especially successful at regulating temperature, relieving pressure, and providing an even surface to move around on. It doesn’t isolate motion as well as all-foam mattresses tend to and only provides average edge support, but overall, our testers found this model to be quite well-rounded.

Construction Breakdown

Airbeds have a unique support core with air chambers that can be inflated and deflated using a motor in order to adjust the firmness level. The Solaire has two vulcanized rubber chambers that are engineered for durability and quiet performance. A foam rail wraps the perimeter to increase edge support around the air chambers, and a moisture barrier rests between the upper layers and support core to extend the mattress’ lifespan.

Above the Solaire’s support core sit three comfort layers. The first features gel-infused CertiPUR-US certified memory foam, which relieves pressure point pain by adapting to your body’s unique shape. The center comfort layer consists of perforated Talalay latex, which provides responsive pressure relief and airflow. Finally, the Solaire features an organic cotton cover that’s breathable, soft, and stitched into a pillow top that has extra support under the lower back.

You can buy this model in a range of sizes including split king, split California king, and upper-flex queen and king models. The latter are split at the top to allow each side to move separately — a useful feature for people who find relief by sleeping with an elevated head. Saatva includes a 365-night sleep trial with each purchase and free White Glove delivery is standard in the contiguous U.S. The mattress carries a limited lifetime warranty.

Our Verdict

Who It’s Best For

Thick, adaptive foam layers make the Emma Hybrid Cooling Comfort a solid match for heavier side sleepers. Cooling materials throughout the build should also appeal to people who run hot in bed.

Feel

The Hybrid Cooling Comfort’s foam layers give the mattress a plush, cushy feel. You’ll notice some close contouring on the surface, but the dense transitional foam and zoned coils deliver plenty of pushback to prevent you from sinking excessively.

What It’s Made Of

The Hybrid Cooling Comfort begins with a top layer of open-cell polyfoam engineered to resist heat buildup, followed by memory foam and high-resiliency transitional polyfoam for added cushioning. Pocketed coils divided into seven zones ensure extra reinforcement for heavier areas of your body.

What We Don’t Like

The coils create some bounce, and this can lead to motion transfer and sleep disruptions for couples. You may also notice strong off-gassing odor for up to 72 hours after the Hybrid Cooling Comfort is removed from its shipping box.

  • Comfort and Firmness: Many reviewers mention the comfort level of the Emma Hybrid Cooling Comfort mattress, highlighting its supportive yet soft feel. Some describe it as being the perfect balance of firmness and plushness.
  • Value for Money: Several reviews discuss the good value the mattress offers, especially with discounts and promotions. They appreciate the quality of the mattress relative to its price.
  • Delivery and Packaging: There are mixed comments regarding delivery and packaging. While some customers are satisfied with the fast and easy delivery, others express concerns about inadequate packaging that doesn’t protect the mattress well during shipping.
  • Customer Service: Experiences with customer service seem to vary. Some reviewers praise the responsive and helpful customer service, while others face issues like unresponsive phone lines or difficulties in communication.

Full Details

Hybrids are popular among sleepers for their balance of cushioning and support, but some couples find that coil systems produce too much motion transfer and lead to sleep disruptions for both people. The Emma Hybrid Cooling Comfort uses zoned pocketed coils and a thick, high-density foam base layer. The result is a mattress that provides great overall support without feeling overly springy.

How It Performed

During our hands-on tests, the Hybrid Cooling Comfort proved comfortable and sufficiently supportive for our side sleepers weighing at least 130 pounds, and our back and stomach sleepers weighing up to 230 pounds. Most testers across all weight and position groups didn’t sink excessively due to the zoned coil layer.

Since the Hybrid Cooling Comfort features three adaptive foam layers, our motion isolation tests detected very little motion transfer. Using thermal body sensors for our pressure relief tests, we also found minimal pressure buildup for testers lying on their sides and backs. We recommend the mattress to anyone who normally feels excess pressure on hybrids or finds these models too bouncy.

Construction Breakdown

The Hybrid Cooling Comfort’s top layer is composed of adaptive polyfoam, giving the surface a plush feel without too much sink. Memory foam and transitional polyfoam layers provide additional cushioning while creating a dense buffer between your body and the support core.

The pocketed coils are divided into seven gauge zones, creating extra support for the midsection and gentler cradling elsewhere. The base layer is made of dense foam. We noticed little to no responsiveness, but the mattress still felt supportive for most of our testers. We’ve rated the mattress medium firm (6).

The Hybrid Cooling Comfort is competitively priced and Emma offers free ground shipping throughout the contiguous U.S. Your order comes with a generous trial period allowing you to test out the mattress for up to a year before deciding whether to return it or keep it. If you choose the latter, you’ll also receive a 10-year warranty against structural defects.

How We Test: Rigor, Data, and Sleeper Feedback

When choosing our top mattress picks for people with sleep apnea, our testers focused on a few specific qualities. Support for side sleeping is key, as many doctors recommend this position for those with sleep apnea — with your airway expanded, you’re less likely to snore loudly. Pressure relief is also important because, when sleeping on your side, you may notice pressure buildup in your shoulders and hips. Another consideration was compatibility with adjustable bed bases.

Our product testing team obsesses over the science of sleep and the latest in sleep trends, and many of us have spent time working directly with manufacturers. Since a bed’s comfort and feel largely depends on your body weight and sleeping position, the testers on our team represent a wide range of body types, sleep positions, and comfort preferences.

To get to our selections for top picks, we evaluate mattresses across a number of performance and testing categories. Specifically, we look at construction analysis and pour over product research in our database. We conduct quantitative testing in our Test Lab, perform field testing in our homes, and perhaps most importantly, solicit feedback from owners to see how the bed sleeps in the real world.

To learn more about our mattress evaluation process, you can check out our research methodology page, but here is a quick breakdown:

Construction analysis: Our rating system is grounded in construction. Each mattress rating is derived at the intersection of quality, value, and versatility across a range of sleepers. We look at the bed’s price point, materials, firmness options, comfort and support systems, cooling technology, as well as brand reputation, and then we perform a detailed analysis that measures performance across six different categories to arrive at an overall score.

Quantitative product testing: During these hands-on lab tests, our team uses various tools and technology to evaluate a bed’s performance against motion isolation, pressure relief, temperature control, ease of movement, edge support, and potential for odor emissions. We use the outcomes from these tests to calculate a score for each category.

Field testing: Our field testers sleep on mattresses and other sleep products, like pillows, sheets, and mattress toppers, in their own bedrooms. After weeks of at-home testing, each field tester provides a detailed analysis of how the mattress performs, including what they like and dislike about the bed.

User feedback: Observations from mattress owners and users outside our team are invaluable to our research. We draw insight from surveys, sleep stories, and customer reviews to extract themes, fine-tune our ratings, and better understand how each product performs over time in a real-world setting.

So How Did We Pick the Best Mattresses for Sleep Apnea?
In order to select our top mattress picks for sleep apnea, we focused on pressure relief, ease of movement, and overall support. These qualities are crucial for sleeping comfortably on your side, a position many people with sleep apnea adopt to decrease their symptoms. We also prioritized mattresses that pair well with adjustable bed bases, which can be programmed to elevate your head and neck.

Performance Categories

Motion Isolation

This criteria alludes to the amount of motion a mattress absorbs when a sleeper moves on the surface. We use two testers lying side by side to evaluate motion isolation, who each feel for transfer while the other person moves on the mattress.

Temperature Control

To determine how well a mattress regulates temperature, we perform temperature tests and look closely at its materials and construction. Many mattresses are designed with cooling components meant to reduce heat retention.

Pressure Relief

A bed with strong pressure relief excels at preventing pressure from building up in areas like the shoulders and hips. Beds with even contouring and weight distribution are top performers when it comes to pressure relief.

Off-Gassing

A mattress in a box may release unpleasant chemical odors for a short period after you’ve unboxed it. The initial smell may be strong but typically fades within 2 or 3 days.

Ease of Movement

This criteria reflects how easily a sleeper can move across a bed’s surface. Responsive surfaces made of latex typically perform better than foam surfaces, which can inhibit movement.

Edge Support

We perform sit tests along a bed’s perimeter to measure how well the edges push back against weight. Mattresses with strong edge support have minimal sagging when sleepers sit on or lie close to the perimeter.

How Does Sleep Apnea Affect Sleep?

Sleep apnea causes dozens or hundreds of lapses or reductions in breathing throughout the night that can disrupt sleep, leading to poor sleep quality and daytime drowsiness. Untreated OSA is linked to serious conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and depression.

People with sleep apnea may also gasp, choke, or stop breathing entirely while they sleep because of a blockage in their breathing passage. This is often due to upper airway collapse that can stem from a genetic predisposition, certain facial features, weight, age, or sleeping position.

There are a number of sleep apnea treatments including continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy, oral devices, lifestyle changes, and surgery. If you think you may have sleep apnea, consult a physician and schedule a sleep study to gain better insight into your sleep health. An at-home sleep apnea test can also help you determine if you meet the diagnostic criteria for sleep apnea.

How Does Sleep Position Affect Sleep Apnea?

Studies indicate that sleeping on your back can increase sleep apnea symptoms, while sleeping on your side can reduce them. Some people with sleep apnea experience fewer symptoms while sleeping on their sides or while on their backs with their heads rotated to the side. Sleeping with an elevated head can also decrease symptoms, because that position allows gravity to help keep your airway open and unblocked. Stomach sleeping may also be a better option than back sleeping, but it can be a challenge to sleep on your stomach while using a PAP device.

How to Choose a Mattress for Sleep Apnea

While choosing a mattress for sleep apnea, consider the same factors you would otherwise, and also keep your treatment plan in mind. In addition to choosing a mattress based on sleeping position, price, and mattress type,  make sure a mattress can accommodate any sleep apnea-related accessories you typically use.

What to Look for in a Mattress

Purchasing a mattress can be an overwhelming task because of all the jargon and industry buzzwords you encounter while shopping. Look past marketing terms and instead, consider your body weight, sleeping position, and habits, then choose a mattress to match.

Extra bells and whistles on a mattress don’t necessarily matter if a bed doesn’t meet your needs. There are a handful of factors that are particularly important to consider while shopping.

Price
Costs can add up for those with sleep apnea, as treatment devices and accessories need regular replacement. Factor the cost of your mattress, bed frame, bedding, and other sleep accessories into your overall budget to make sure that you can afford them in addition to the sleep apnea products you’ll need.

Sleeping Position
Some people with sleep apnea train themselves to rest on their sides because it can help decrease snoring and keep airways open. Others find that sleeping on their backs is most comfortable while wearing a CPAP mask. No matter what your favorite sleeping position is, you should purchase a mattress that offers comfort and support for your body weight and sleeping posture.

Quality Materials
High-quality materials can enhance your mattress’ performance and extend its lifespan. When shopping, check manufacturer details and customer reviews to learn how well a product holds up in real-life scenarios. Certifications from respected third-party agencies like CertiPUR-US, OEKO-TEX, and Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) can also be indicators of quality.

Firmness Level
We measure firmness level on a scale between 1 and 10, with 1 being the softest mattress and 10 as the firmest. Your weight, sleeping position, and personal preference are all factors in which firmness level you should choose. Usually, heavier individuals require firmer mattresses than people of lighter weights. Also, back and stomach sleepers generally benefit from more firmness, while side sleepers may require more softness. While researching mattress models, check which ones are most compatible with your ideal firmness level.

Pressure Relief
Some people are prone to developing pressure points while sleeping. A mattress that cushions your body while absorbing impact can help prevent pressure points from forming and alleviate them if they do. Materials like memory foam and latex adapt to each body’s unique shape to disperse weight and take pressure off areas like the hips and shoulders.

Motion Isolation
Light sleepers who share the bed with a partner may enjoy a mattress that isolates motion. When one partner moves on their side of the bed, a motion isolating mattress prevents this movement from reaching the other side. Foam is especially adept at absorbing movement and preventing disturbances.

Temperature Regulation
Mattresses that regulate temperature well prevent sleepers from overheating. There are several  ways that they achieve this, including airflow, strategic construction details, cooling fibers and fabrics, and infused foams designed to wick away excess heat. Traditionally, hybrid, innerspring, and latex mattresses regulate temperature better than foam models.

Edge Support
Sufficient edge support can be a major advantage, especially for people who sleep at the sides of the mattress as well as those who have a tough time getting in and out of bed. Some models use higher-gauge steel coils to bolster the perimeter while others have foam rails.

Contouring
If you like the feeling of a full-body hug, you can choose a contouring mattress that rises and falls with your body to match its shape. Mattresses with significant contouring typically help prevent pressure point discomfort, and they can relieve joint pain. Choose a mattress with memory foam comfort layers to get maximum contouring.

Mattress Type
Years ago, innerspring mattresses were most common, but the mattress industry has expanded to include many types of constructions. The most popular include all-foam, hybrid, latex, innerspring, and airbed models. People with sleep apnea often enjoy adjustable bed bases, which work best with flexible mattresses.

What Types of Mattresses Are Best for Sleep Apnea?

There are hundreds of mattress models available to shoppers today, but most fall within one of a few design types. Innerspring mattresses used to dominate the market, but constructions have expanded to include hybrid, foam, latex, and airbed models, among others.

Models of each type share consistent features, but there is plenty of variation among models, even if they share the same general construction. These differences come in many forms, including kinds of materials, quality, construction methods, and formulations.

Hybrid

Hybrid mattresses are multi-layered models that have a pocketed coil or innerspring support core and a comfort system made from another material, typically foam, latex, microcoils, or a combination of components. Some people use the terms hybrid and innerspring interchangeably, as both types feature coils in the support core.

Hybrids tend to be versatile mattresses that have a blend of responsiveness from the coils and pressure relief from the comfort system, though this can vary from model to model. They often sleep cooler than other mattress types, because air flows freely through the support core.

Innerspring

When you think of a classic mattress, chances are you think of an innerspring. These mattresses have existed for well over a century. While they still have many of the same characteristics that they once had, materials and construction details have advanced significantly.

As the name implies, innersprings have a support core made from springs. Most models have a thin comfort layer designed to add cushion to the mattress’ surface. Euro-tops, pillow tops, and quilted covers are popular choices, as are foam and latex. Innerspring models typically give sleepers the feeling of sleeping “on” instead of “in” their mattress. They’re available in a wide range of firmness levels.

Foam

All-foam mattresses have both a comfort system and support core made from foam. Often, there are different types of foam throughout the mattress to achieve a certain feel and performance. Polyfoam and memory foam are the most popular choices, and both can have infusions of gel, graphite, copper, or other materials designed to keep sleepers cool.

Foam mattresses are typically excellent at isolating motion and relieving pressure, because the foam absorbs impact and movement. However, they also retain more heat than other mattress types, so they’re not always a suitable fit for people who sleep hot. Because they can be compressed easily, you can often get foam mattresses shipped directly to your home in a box.

Latex

Natural latex is tree sap that can be turned into rubber, and it has a similarly buoyant quality. It’s excellent at relieving pressure point discomfort and it tends to sleep cooler than foam. Mattress manufacturers often use latex in models meant for sleepers who weigh above 230 pounds, as it alleviates pain without decreasing support.

You can find synthetic latex mattresses that are a bit more affordable than natural latex models, which tend to carry a high price tag. Latex beds are often long-lasting and durable, but they’re heavy and can be tough to move from place to place. Some latex mattresses use latex in every layer, while others place it above or below coils or foam to achieve a different kind of feel.

Airbed

If you want a versatile mattress model, an airbed may be worth considering. These unique mattresses have support cores made from air chambers connected to a motor. When you use the included remote, these air chambers increase and decrease inflation to achieve your desired firmness level.

There are typically separate chambers on each side of an airbed so that partners can make their own adjustments, which is particularly beneficial for couples with different firmness preferences. Airbeds often have a pillow-top, Euro-top, or other comfort system to provide cushioning.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea is a disorder that can occur when peoples’ breathing passages become blocked during sleep, causing them to choke, snore, gasp, or stop breathing. When untreated, sleep apnea can lead to serious health conditions and accidents stemming from drowsiness.

Those who suspect that they have sleep apnea should consult their doctor and ask about a sleep study to learn more about their health.

How does sleep apnea affect sleep?

Sleep apnea affects sleep because it causes people to stop breathing, snore, or choke when their breathing passages become blocked. This can lead to very low-quality sleep and excessive drowsiness that has real-life impacts like an increased risk of accidents and health problems.

Is a firm mattress better for sleep apnea?

A firm mattress isn’t necessarily better for all people with sleep apnea, but it can be better for those who sleep on their stomachs or backs and for people of larger weights. The best mattress for sleep apnea is one that’s ideal for both your preferred sleeping position and your body weight.

A mattress that’s too soft can allow your spine to fall out of alignment, while one that’s too firm may cause pressure points. Take your unique needs into consideration and find a model that works with them.

What is the best mattress type for sleep apnea?

The best mattress type for sleep apnea is one that works with your personal sleeping habits, body weight, and typical sleeping position. There is no one-size-fits-all mattress that will decrease sleep apnea symptoms. Rather, your preferences, body type, and preferred sleep position indicate the type of mattress you should buy.

You can find hybrid, all-foam, innerspring, latex, and airbed mattresses in firmness levels ranging from 1 to 10, or very soft to extra firm. Learn more about what each mattress type has to offer, then try one that meets your needs with a firmness level that’s appropriate for your weight and sleeping posture.

What is the best sleeping position for sleep apnea?

Side sleeping is generally accepted as the best sleeping position for sleep apnea. When you sleep on your side, your tongue and other tissues in your throat aren’t as likely to block your upper airway as they are when you sleep flat on your back. Stomach sleeping is also generally better for sleep apnea, but it can interfere with CPAP masks and hoses.

While back sleeping is the least desirable sleeping position for those with sleep apnea, it can lead to a better outcome if you opt for an adjustable bed that keeps your head and neck elevated. This elevation can help keep your breathing passages open.
