Here at SleepFoundation.org, we test all mattress toppers featured on our review pages in-house. Our extensive testing process ensures our product recommendations for toppers are as accurate as possible.
Our testing methodology guidelines include the following:
Our testers vary widely in their sleep preferences and body types and have multiple years of experience testing mattress toppers. This diversity provides us with comprehensive and inclusive data on which we base our recommendations.
All mattress toppers we test in Sleep Doctor’s Seattle office undergo rounds of testing for several performance criteria. We test each topper on a medium soft (4) mattress, a medium (5) mattress, a medium firm (6) mattress, and a firm (7) mattress to ensure well-rounded ratings.
Testers lie down on the mattress topper and move across the surface while we use heat guns, pressure mapping tools, and VOC meters to test for temperature control, pressure relief, and off-gassing, respectively. We then use this data to give the topper ratings for each of our performance categories.
While lying on the mattress topper, our testers rate comfort and support in their preferred position. Based on their feedback, we assign ratings for the topper’s performance across sleeping positions and body weights.
Saatva is an online luxury mattress company that launched in 2010. While it is known for its premium American-made mattresses, the company also produces several other types of products to complete your bedroom setup, including sheets, pillows, bed frames, and mattress toppers.
The flagship Saatva Mattress Topper is wrapped in certified organic cotton and comes with elastic anchor bands to help the topper remain secure on your mattress. Buyers can choose between three different core material options: graphite-infused memory foam, latex, and high-density polyfoam. These options vary in their thickness, pricing, and performance to accommodate different needs and preferences.
We’ll look at the Saatva Mattress Topper’s construction and pricing while discussing how each material option may perform for different types of sleepers. We will also outline the shipping, warranty, and return policy information to help you determine if this mattress topper is right for you.
Saatva Mattress Topper Review Breakdown
Each Saatva Mattress Topper comes with a certified organic cotton cover and elastic anchor bands to help the topper remain in place and feel like an extension of your mattress. Buyers can choose from Graphite, Latex, and Foam versions, which each contain a different primary material within the topper.
The Graphite option was designed with temperature neutrality in mind. While most memory foam mattress toppers retain heat, the cooling properties of graphite are intended to prevent this mattress topper from becoming too hot by drawing heat away from the body. The Graphite model also features the conforming pressure relief of memory foam coupled with a polyfoam base to increase durability, provide additional support, and enhance responsiveness.
Meanwhile, the Latex version is a springier and slightly more durable choice for sleepers that prefer a more supportive surface with increased airflow and temperature neutrality. Talalay latex is inherently more breathable and responsive than most synthetic foam, which makes this topper a good option for sleepers who prefer a cooler surface that’s easier to move on. Since this version uses naturally derived materials, it may also appeal to eco-conscious shoppers.
Finally, the Foam option is the most economical choice of the three materials. It evenly distributes body weight and offers pressure point relief. The Foam Topper is made entirely of polyfoam, which makes it slightly more responsive than the Graphite version. However, at half the thickness of the Graphite, it may not offer the same degree of pressure relief.
While the Graphite and Latex have a medium soft feel, the Foam earns a medium rating.
Materials and Construction
Though all three versions of the Saatva Mattress Topper come with a cotton cover and elastic anchor bands, the core construction varies based on which material the buyer selects.
The Graphite version is composed of a 2-inch layer of polyfoam to provide structure topped with 1 inch of graphite-infused memory foam for cradling. Meanwhile, the Latex option is constructed of 1.5 inches of ventilated Talalay latex, which enhances the support, temperature neutrality, and responsiveness. Finally, the Foam Topper is made of 1.5 inches of high-density polyfoam, giving it a springier feel than the Graphite.

Prices and Sizing
The average mattress topper costs between $150 and $450. The Saatva Mattress Topper lands comfortably within this price range, though the different material choices come in at different price-points.
The most economical choice is the Foam version, which is made of high-density polyfoam. The Graphite option is a little more costly, as it is thicker and features a blend of memory foam and graphite in addition to the polyfoam base. The Latex version is the most expensive choice, though it is common for latex toppers to cost a little more. Talalay latex is highly resilient and durable, which can make the Latex option a longer-term investment than foam toppers.
In addition to the standard sizes listed below, you can opt for a split king in all three designs. This essentially consists of two twin XL toppers.
Saatva uses premium materials in its bedding, and the mattress topper is no exception.
Overall, the Saatva Mattress Topper scored solid marks across each of our rating categories. Our testers found that all of the material options offer above-average support while remaining comfortable and conforming. Each material choice is also expected to reach or exceed the 3-year lifespan that is typical of a mattress topper.
However, there are some potential drawbacks. Though the organic cotton cover helps control temperatures by wicking away moisture and permitting air circulation, some sleepers may find that the Graphite and Foam options still trap more heat than they’d like. Additionally, due to the plushness of these options, some couples may find that the surface is not as responsive as would be ideal for sex.
Durability
3
/ 5
Graphite: 3 / 5
Latex: 4 / 5
Foam: 3 / 5
Our testers expect the Saatva Mattress Topper to remain intact across several years of regular use. The Graphite and Foam options should reach a lifespan of about 3 years, which is on par with the average for foam mattress toppers. Due to the natural resiliency of Talalay latex, however, the Latex option is anticipated to have an extended lifespan that may surpass the 3-year average.
Support
4
/ 5
Graphite: 4 / 5
Latex: 4 / 5
Foam: 4 / 5
Each of the material options for the Saatva Mattress Topper provides very good support to promote spinal alignment for a variety of body types. The Foam version provides an even surface for most sleepers, while the Graphite choice hugs the body without skimping on support thanks to its reinforcing polyfoam base layer. Sleepers looking for the most support, however, may prefer the Latex Topper, which easily maintains its shape and should resist sagging and indentations.
Conforming
4
/ 5
Graphite: 4 / 5
Latex: 3 / 5
Foam: 3 / 5
The Graphite Topper conforms closely to the body to prevent pressure points and improve spinal alignment, particularly for side sleepers. The Foam option does not contour as consistently as the Graphite because of its thinner profile and all-polyfoam construction, but it should help provide additional cushioning for many sleepers. While the Latex version does not conform as closely as most competing models made of memory foam, it can still provide pressure relief without as much hug.
Temperature Control
3
/ 5
Graphite: 3 / 5
Latex: 4 / 5
Foam: 3 / 5
Because of its conforming, the Foam version of the Saatva Mattress Topper may become too warm for some sleepers, though the breathable organic cotton cover improves airflow. However, the Graphite version was designed with temperature neutrality in mind. The conductive properties of graphite are intended to make this topper a cooler option than the regular foam, though our testers found that it may still trap heat and feel warm to some.
The Latex version offers the best temperature regulation of the Saatva Mattress Topper options. It is ventilated to promote strong airflow and is covered in the same organic cotton that allows airflow while wicking away moisture.
Motion Isolation
4
/ 5
Graphite: 4 / 5
Latex: 3 / 5
Foam: 4 / 5
As with most foam mattress toppers, the Graphite and the Foam Saatva Mattress Toppers isolate motion very well, which may make them ideal for those concerned with waking up when their partner moves. The Latex option minimizes motion noticeably, but it does not eliminate movement to the same extent as the other material options.
Sex
2
/ 5
Graphite: 2 / 5
Latex: 4 / 5
Foam: 2 / 5
Due to the conforming properties of the Graphite and Foam options, their responsiveness is limited, and they may not be sufficiently springy for some couples. The Latex option, however, is slightly bouncier, which many couples prefer for sex.
Off-Gassing and Odor Potential
While any mattress topper may have a “new” smell when initially purchased, the Saatva Mattress Topper is likely to have minimal odor. Any smell that is present should air out relatively quickly.
Many off-gassing odors come from synthetic foams, which often emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from manufacturing. Though these odors are generally not considered harmful, some individuals may find them unpleasant.
The Saatva Mattress Topper does not have an excessively strong or persistent smell, no matter which material buyers choose. The Graphite and Foam options may emit some initial odor, but long-term off-gassing should not be a major issue. Similarly, the Latex option may have a rubbery smell when new, but the ventilated design should help air out unwanted odors fairly quickly.
If the smell bothers you, just leave your new topper in a separate room with good air circulation until it dissipates.
Cleaning and Care
There are many methods to care for your mattress topper. A simple way to keep your topper in good condition is to vacuum the surface thoroughly each time you change your bedding.
It is also advisable to carefully remove the topper from your mattress occasionally to clean it and inspect it for damage. When doing so, you will want to place it on a flat surface, vacuum it thoroughly, and allow it to air out for about 8 hours.
To keep your Saatva Mattress Topper in its best condition possible, Saatva also suggests owners can spot clean as needed using a mild cleaning solution.
Sleeping Style and Body Weight
Side Sleepers
The Saatva Mattress Topper performs very well for side sleepers of all body types. Side sleepers who weigh under 130 pounds will likely prefer the Graphite option, which is thicker and conforms to the body more for extra pressure relief around the hip and shoulder area. Side sleepers who weigh over 130 pounds may enjoy any of the materials depending on their personal preferences.
Back Sleepers
The Saatva Mattress Topper performs very well for back sleepers of all body types. For sleepers up to 230 pounds, any of the material choices should provide enough support to promote proper spinal alignment by cradling the hips without excessive sagging. However, back sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds may prefer the Latex option for its low point elasticity, which spreads out the weight over a wider area to limit sinkage that could put a strain on the spine.
Stomach Sleepers
The Saatva Mattress Topper performs well for stomach sleepers who weigh under 230 pounds. Stomach sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds may prefer the Latex or Foam options, which provide a little more support to promote spinal alignment by not allowing the midsection to sink in too deeply. However, stomach sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds may find that even the Latex and Foam options do not provide enough support to keep their spines well aligned.
