How to Put on a Duvet Cover
Standard Method vs. Burrito Method
Many people enjoy using a duvet as their outermost layer of bedding, because its unique design allows the cover to be removed and washed on its own. However, many people also struggle to put the duvet back into the duvet cover after washing it. We’ve outlined a couple of our favorite methods for putting a duvet back into a duvet cover.
The Standard Method: Step by Step
While the standard method for putting a duvet insert into a cover can be done alone, working with a buddy makes it an easier task.
- Lay the duvet cover flat on the bed, with the open end facing the foot of the bed.
- Start at one corner of the foot of the bed. If you’re doing this with a buddy, have them stand at the other corner of the foot of the bed.
- Insert the duvet into the duvet cover. At the bottom of the bed, adjust the cover so its corners fit closely around the corners of the duvet.
- Move toward the top of the bed. Shimmy the duvet within the cover until its top corners are close to the top corners of the cover.
- Holding the top corners of both the duvet and duvet cover, shake the cover with duvet. (If you have a buddy, each person can hold one corner). The duvet should spread out inside of the cover, so it fits evenly within it.
- Lay the duvet back on the bed nicely.
- Go back to the foot of the bed to tie, zip, snap, or button the duvet cover closed.
The Burrito Method: Step by Step
Another method often used to fit a duvet in a duvet cover is the burrito method. This method gets its name because it involves rolling everything up.
- Turn the duvet cover inside out, then lay it on top of the bed with the opening facing away from you.
- Place the duvet on top of the cover, so its corners align with the corners of the cover.
- Starting at the end opposite from the duvet cover’s opening, begin rolling both the duvet and cover together. Adjust the edges as you go to keep the cover and duvet aligned.
- Once you’ve rolled it all the way, push one end of the roll into the opening of the duvet cover. Move along the roll to the other end, adjusting it until all of the showing duvet insert has been pushed into the cover.
- Zip, tie, button, or snap the cover closed.
- Align the bottom of the duvet cover with the bottom of the bed, then begin unrolling toward the top of the bed.
- After you’ve unrolled the cover, shake it out a bit. You should have a perfect duvet in its cover.
Tips for Uneven Duvet Covers
Not every duvet is made to fit its cover perfectly. Some don’t even come with closures, which can make things a little trickier. However, there is a simple way to both tackle this kind of issue and manage a duvet-covering session solo.
- Lay your duvet insert flat out on the bed.
- Turn your duvet cover inside out, with the opening pointed towards your feet.
- Lift the inside-out duvet cover and run your arms through the opening until your hands are inside each of the top corners, creating “mittens” over your hands.
- Walk to the end of the bed, with your “mittens” up in front of your body.
- Grab each foot-end corner of the duvet with your “mittens.”
- Gently flip the duvet cover over the duvet.
- Continue to lift your hands as you pull back the duvet and allow the duvet cover to fully cover the duvet. Standing on a stable chair makes the process move faster.
- Once the duvet is fully covered, button, snap, or tie its closures, if it has any.
- Continue making your bed.
Tips and Tricks to Keep Your Duvet in Place
Sometimes people face challenges with keeping their duvet in place within its cover. Here are some tips for keeping it in place:
- Make sure your duvet and duvet cover are the same size: Sometimes a duvet doesn’t stay put because it is either too small or too big for its cover.
- Try duvet snaps: These bits of adhesive with snaps attached to them can affix to both the duvet and the inside of the cover, keeping their corners snugly attached.
- Explore the Scandinavian method: Instead of sleeping under a shared duvet with a sleep partner, allow each partner to have their own duvet or blanket. This can help keep both people warm while reducing movement that might knock the duvet out of place within its cover.
