Pitch Your Story Idea

SleepFoundation.org welcomes all proposals for stories related to sleep, as well as writers and experts who are interested in appearing on the site.

Who we are

Sleep Doctor‘s SleepFoundation.org promotes sleep, a key pillar of health, to help create a “healthy, well-rested world.” Our reach is strong and extends through the health-media landscape.

We’re looking for writers and sleep-related article pitches from writers, as well as subject-matter experts, medical reviewers, and much more. Check out our open full-time roles, too.

What we’re looking for in articles

  • Strong sleep focus
  • Stories that have not been published elsewhere or that will be. Exclusives only.
  • New stories we haven’t told before. Search SleepFoundation.org, especially sleep news. If you see a story or page on your topic, we’re likely not seeking another.
  • Tied to current events (example)
  • Based on new, compelling, and unique data and research (example)
  • Touch on social justice, sleep inequity, and similar issues (example)

What we’re looking for in writers

  • Demonstrable experience interviewing and quoting health-related subject-matter experts and sourcing other interview subjects
  • High comfort level with statistics and interpreting data to create a narrative flow
  • U.S.-based, at least for tax purposes

How to pitch us

Email [email protected] or complete our pitch form. Be sure to include:

  • Your hook and proposed headline
  • Brief outline or explanation of topic (one to three paragraphs), including newsworthiness and why it would excite our audience
  • Who you’ll be interviewing, generally
  • Why you’re the right person to write this (link to portfolio, 1-3 relevant clips, etc.)

What else you need to know

  • Audience: General, national, U.S. only
  • Language: English (U.S.)
  • Word count: 750 or more, though typically more than 1,000
  • Fee: Flat fee negotiated prior to assignment, starting at $750
  • Timeline: We will respond to most pitches within two weeks. Upon approval, articles typically due at least two weeks after assignment, with in-house editing after.
