Washington, D.C. (November 2, 2015 ) — The National Sleep Foundation (NSF) announced today the launch of its annual Drowsy Driving Prevention Week (#Awake2Drive), November 1 through November 9 th. This year, NSF will urge state and federal legislators, as well as the public, to seriously examine drowsy driving and find ways to keep America’s roads safe.
According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, Drowsy Driving contributes to several thousand automobile accidents a year in the United States. It is the result of a driver’s impaired abilities to focus and stay alert, due to a lack of sleep. The #Awake2Drive campaign by the NSF aims to raise public awareness about the dangers of drowsy driving, how it affects drivers, and provides tips and advice on how to avoid falling asleep at the wheel. As part of Drowsy Driving Prevention Week, the National Sleep Foundation will host its annual Sleep Health & Safety Conference at the Hilton McLean Tysons Corner Hotel on November 6, 2015. The Honorable Mark Rosekind, Administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), will deliver the keynote address and leading researchers, government officials, technology manufacturers and transportation officials will address the conference through presentations and panels.
“Drowsy driving is a vital public safety issue that needs to be addressed. Our conference provides a fresh perspective on how to take on this problem,” says David Cloud, Chief Executive Officer of the National Sleep Foundation. “It is a timely look at the ways emerging automobile technology, sleep research, driver behavior data and transportation safety policy can further prevent fall-asleep crashes, and make America’s roads safer.”
