National Institutes of Health Director Francis Collins has named Dr. Susan Shurin the acting director of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, according to an e-mail from former director Elizabeth G. Nabel. Shurin, who previously served as deputy director at the Institute, joined NHLBI in 2006 after working as a professor of pediatrics and oncology at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. Nabel wrote in an e-mail, "[Susan] is extraordinarily well-equipped to take over the helm and lead this terrific Institute to even greater heights." According to an e-mail from Collins, Nabel leaves NHBLI on Nov. 30 and Shurin will take the position starting Dec. 1.
